ibraries don’t turn 150 years old every day. To celebrate the momentous occasion of Cleveland Public Library’s sesquicentennial anniversary—and to give back to the community that has generously supported the Library for so long—the entire city is invited to the free, daylong CPL150 Street Festival on Saturday, July 27, 2019. On this day, Superior Avenue will be closed between E. 3rd and E. 6th Streets in front of the Main Library campus downtown to accommodate a lively festival jam-packed with activities, attractions, and performers. Clevelanders of all ages are invited to this free, fun-filled event. “The CPL150 Street Festival is for everyone,” says Felton Thomas, Jr., Executive Director. “Throughout the day, we’ll have lots of activities appropriate for children and families, and the evening will include programming for adults. This festival will be a colorful, joyous celebration created specifically for the people of Cleveland. Consider this your formal invitation to come downtown on July 27 to take part in the festivities.”

Activities Galore

From 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the event will focus on family- friendly entertainment, including an appearance from Eric Litwin, author of Pete the Cat; puppet shows and workshops; balloon twisting demonstrations; an appearance from author and illustrator Raúl the Third; a Hiplet dance performance presenting a fusion of classical ballet, hip-hop, and other urban dance styles; eSports gaming events; and much more. The day’s eclectic range of activities and entertainment will be punctuated by public art and giveaways. Free tickets for

The Lion King at Playhouse Square will be given away to the first 200 students at the festival who completed the Summer Lit League program. In addition, the Library will also give away hundreds of backpacks filled with supplies for children and teens. Tours focusing on the Library’s The World of Puppets: From Stage to Screen exhibit will be offered. The CPL150 Street Festival will also unveil the Library’s 2019 See Also art installation in the Eastman Reading Garden. Feel free to inflate your expectations (pun intended) for this bright, bold, and interactive inflatable installation created by Town and Concrete from France. In addition, the Street Festival will display mural art, chalk art, and other artistic creations to expose attendees to both international and locally based artists. As the day wears on, adult-focused programming will kick into gear from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. MOCA will present LOADED at the festival as a preview of their upcoming performance season—an experience set to include performance art, film, and avant-rock, punk, hip-hop, and electronic music. Evening headliners include comedian Roy Wood, Jr., who appears on The Daily

Show (among other Comedy Central programs) and has entertained millions on stage, television, and radio. Following Wood’s comedy act, Dâm-Funk takes the stage for a DJ set to wrap up the evening with selections of soul, funk, R&B, and hip-hop for an 18+ crowd.

Rain or Shine

All neighborhood branch libraries in the Cleveland Public Library system will close on July 27 in honor of the festival, excluding seven branches that will offer free, regularly scheduled shuttle service to and from the festival on Lolly the Trolley. Those branches include Addison, Collinwood, East 131st, Eastman, South, Sterling, and Woodland.

DOCUMENTING a Diverse City Through special storytelling and photography projects, Cleveland Public Library will help capture a snapshot of the city and its people in 2019. BY L AU R A WA LT E R

leveland, get ready for your close-up. This year, thanks to the Library’s special partnerships with the Cleveland Print Room and ideastream, the lives and times of our city will be documented, shared, and celebrated like never before. These two ongoing, community-based projects—one focusing on photography, the other on storytelling—will also help honor Cleveland Public Library’s 150 th anniversary year. “What better way to celebrate the past of our city than through projects honoring our present and considering our future?” asks Aaron Mason, Cleveland Public Library Director of Outreach and Programming Services. “We are honored to work with ideastream to gather oral histories from our residents and the Cleveland Print Room to solicit and share images of the city and its people from a diverse range of photographers. Both of these projects 6

are our way of giving back to the residents Cleveland, who have for so long supported the Library’s place in their community.” First, Cleveland 20/20: A Photographic Exploration of Cleveland, a citywide photography program spearheaded by the Cleveland Print Room, aims to capture and preserve Cleveland’s people and places through photography. The multi-faceted program enlists a dozen local photographers along with additional teen photographers to capture images throughout the city. “We hope to focus on the city through the lens of the neighborhoods, the community, and the residents,” says Shari Wilkins, Executive Director of the Cleveland Print Room. “Our city has iconic buildings like the Rock Hall and the West Side Market, but this project will be more entrenched in the community. That’s why it was important to have a wide range

of experiences and ages for our photographers—we’ll have a diverse group of people documenting a diverse city.” Cleveland 20/20 also features community engagement opportunities with nationally renowned photographer Ruddy Roye; public outreach and portrait sessions at community events; photography slams; and special photography displays in neighborhoods. Finally, this project will help bolster the Library’s Photograph Collection. “Our Photograph Collection currently has 1.3 million photos, which range from mid- to late-1800s through the 1990s,” says Olivia Hoge, Subject Department Manager for the Center for Local and Global History. “But we have a gap from the ’90s to present day. We hope this project will help us move forward with making the collection more contemporary.”

Picture Perfect

For Cleveland 20/20 photographer a, the project has the ability to showcase different points of view and to present the city in a more diverse, inclusive light. Jackson intends to set part of her work in the Buckeye-Shaker area, and she also plans to showcase the city from the perspective of its public transportation system by capturing images along RTA bus and train lines. She adds that her youth—at 22, she is one of the project’s youngest adult photographers—and her gender may both prove to be assets as she attempts to connect with her photographic subjects. “I plan to capture as many people as I can to show Cleveland off in the best way,” she says. “I hope this project will have a large impact on Cleveland. I think it’s important to show how the city has changed and to give hope for where it’s going.” While it’s true that a lot has changed in 150 years, one Cleveland 20/20 photographer will bring a piece of the past into the present. Back when Cleveland Public Library opened in 1869, the emerging field of photography was dominated by the wet-plate collodion process, which entails coating a piece of glass or metal with collodion to make it light sensitive before shooting and developing it on the spot. Photographer Greg Martin uses that same process today, which he’ll employ in his work with Cleveland 20/20. “This is one of the oldest of photography methods; it was widely popular in the 1860s,” Martin explains. “It’s great for community engagement. People are fascinated by it. And there’s something about the medium and the industrial history of the city that work well together—the chemistry and the glass and metal all very much ties into the history of Cleveland.” Stephen Bivens, meanwhile, intends to create a photographic timeline of today’s Cleveland. Bivens, a Cleveland Arts Prize winner, says he’ll particularly focus on the Collinwood and Glenville neighborhoods. “My expectations are to get a time capsule of everything that’s going on in Cleveland right now, so 50 or 100 years from now, we’ll see what was going on in these neighborhoods,” he says. “I think this project can bring a lot of pride to the city.” Cleveland 20/20 will culminate in an exhibition of the project’s photographs, which will be on display in Brett Hall in Main Library

in 2020. The Cleveland Print Room will curate the exhibit.

Cleveland Stories

The Library will also capture oral histories of the city’s residents this year through the CPL150 Storytelling Project, which will record the stories of Cleveland residents in their own voices. “We want to document and create a snapshot of where Cleveland is in 2019 for the Library’s 150 th anniversary,” says Justin Glanville, the ideastream reporter/producer who is leading the project. “Hearing someone speak in their own voice about a story that is important to them is such a powerful way to build connection, understanding, and compassion. My hope is that this project draws us closer together as a city and as a region.” Like Cleveland 20/20, the CPL150 Storytelling Project aims to document the lives of today’s Clevelanders and to portray a comprehensive, diverse portrait of our city. Select librarians will be trained to interview patrons who wish to record their stories. These brief interviews may focus on family history, immigration to Cleveland, military service, education, the life and culture of particular neighborhoods, and more, all to create a snapshot of Cleveland in 2019 in residents’ own words. From these initial interviews, Glanville will produce six stories throughout the year, which will air on 90.3 WCPN ideastream during peak hours and also appear online. “I’ll be looking for stories that I feel compelled by, that put me on the edge of my seat—whether it’s because the person is a really great storyteller, or it’s just subject matter that’s interesting, unusual, or speaks to where Cleveland is right now,” he says. “Cleveland has such a rich history, and this storytelling project could be a jumping-off point for getting people’s everyday stories surrounding their lives in this city,” adds Shayna Muckerheide in the Library’s Outreach and Programming Services. “This is a way to capture stories for generations, to learn about people’s lives in different communities. And people trust the Library, so we hope they’ll share their stories with us.” All stories gathered by Library staff will be archived online in its Digital Gallery. The Library also has the capability to record interviews in a patron’s native language, including Spanish, French, Mandarin, Russian, Romanian, Italian, Arabic, or Hungarian. Don’t Be Shy

Both the CPL150 Storytelling Project and Cleveland 20/20 will culminate at the Library’s special Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Ceremony, which will take place on January 20, 2020. Until then, both projects will be represented throughout the community, including at the Library’s CPL150 Street Festival on July 27, 2019. All residents are encouraged to participate—whether by sharing their stories or having their photos taken. “You’ll be a part of this history of Cleveland,” says Bivens, “so don’t be shy.”

FEEDING the Community As the Library’s partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank demonstrates, libraries are more than buildings full of books—they can serve as networks to provide hungry children with nutritious meals. BY L AU R A WA LT E R

n a chilly March Friday outside the Walz Branch in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, dozens of people lined up before an array of squash, corn, strawberries, apples, oranges, pears, lettuce, and milk, all available to qualifying individuals and families at no charge. This monthly mobile food pantry, which is made possible through produce donated by the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, helps fulfill a vital need within this branch’s neighborhood—and also highlights just one way Cleveland Public Library is transforming the way libraries serve their communities. “The idea of a library only moving materials, like books, is outdated,” says Felton Thomas, Jr., Executive Director and CEO of Cleveland Public Library. “Today, libraries are making the move from being transactional to transformational. Our partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is an excellent example of how we strive to transform our communities here in Cleveland.” While the Walz mobile food pantry is unique within the Library system, Cleveland Public Library’s partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank extends back more than a decade with the express purpose of serving the city’s youth. For years now, these partnering organizations have worked to ensure every Cleveland 8

Public Library branch provides free, nutritious food to children throughout the year. In the summer, children can visit their local branches on weekdays for a bagged lunch, and in the school year, the Kids’ Café program offers afterschool meals. “The Food Bank has one mission at heart: making sure people who don’t have food have food,” Thomas says. “Food insecurity is huge in our communities. As far as we can be helpful in that process, we’ll be part of the discussion to help level opportunities for our patrons.”

Fighting Food Insecurity

If providing food to hungry children and families seems out of the realm of a library’s services, think again. From the Library’s early adoption of the “open shelf” concept in the late 1800s, which gave patrons direct access to books, to more recent technological and service-related partnerships, Cleveland Public Library has long sought to innovate and change the perception of what a library can be to its community. Fighting food insecurity is one of the latest initiatives that makes the Library a trendsetter—and it’s one that serves a critical purpose. According to Kristin S. Warzocha, President and CEO of Greater

Cleveland Food Bank, recent data suggests Cleveland tops the list of U.S. cities with the highest child poverty rates. “We know that a significant number of children live in families where there’s a regular struggle to put nutritious food on table, and we know that nutritious food is so critical for kids’ learning, growth, and development,” – Kristin S. Warzocha she explains. “It’s important President and CEO of Greater for these kids to have access Cleveland Food Bank to nutritious food on a regular basis.” An average meal provided to young library patrons includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, a vegetable, a carton of milk, and an occasional sweet treat. In the Food Bank’s 2018 fiscal year, the organization provided 189,000 meals to Cleveland Public Library locations, as well as 47,000 pounds fresh produce through the Walz mobile food pantry. The value of that food—which was provided to children at no cost—amounts to nearly $600,000. “A lot of clients who turn to the Food Bank are forced to make very hard choices,” Warzocha says. “They’re choosing between food and medicine, or food and child care, or food and the utility bill, rent, or mortgage. The act of providing a nutritious meal when someone is in need not only provides them with the reinforcement that this is a community that cares, but it also frees up dollars to do other things that are important to that family.” But the worth of this food goes beyond dollars and cents. In fact, it’s priceless. “We cannot address a child’s other needs until the basic needs of food are addressed,” explains Kathleen Lefkowtiz, Branch Manager at Walz. “If children don’t have food, then a library’s books, movies, or computers aren’t as useful.” “This food helps children physically, socially, and emotionally. That nourishment gives them the energy to do their homework and socialize with other kids,” adds Pasha Moncrief Robinson, Fleet Branch Manager. “Providing free meals also helps us get to know the kids at our branch. Originally, libraries were for resources and information, but now we also have to stay relevant in an everchanging world. This partnership helps us sustain our value within the community.”

A True Partnership

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works with many partner organizations, but Warzocha points out that Cleveland Public Library is the Food Bank’s first and largest library partner. This relationship has even influenced how the Food Bank works with other libraries. “Because we’ve worked so successfully together and have reached so many children, we’ve expanded to other library systems,”

she says. “The fact that Cleveland Public Library has 27 branches is pretty extraordinary in terms of network and reach. It’s a wonderful organization that, in my view, really cares about the community and the families that live here.” Administering a program of this scale, however, comes with inherent challenges. The Food Bank must estimate how many meals to deliver to each branch, and the number of children who show up in need of a meal each day can vary based on a number of factors. Thomas also acknowledges that in the beginning, some library staff expressed reticence and questioned how food programs fell within the scope of library work. But as time passed and more young patrons benefited from the meals, attitudes changed. In fact, Thomas says, when staff were recently asked about the most important work they do at their branches, many pointed to the afterschool and summer lunch programs. And Warzocha agrees that libraries are a perfect setting to provide meals to children in need. “If I was struggling to put food on the table, there is nowhere I’d rather my kids be than at a Cleveland Public Library site after

school,” she says. “Not only would I know they’re in a safe space and wonderful learning environment, but I’d also know they have access to that food. I’m thankful I’m not in that situation, but I know that so many moms are—and I’m glad that Cleveland Public Library does such a wonderful job providing this service.”

LIBRARIES as Life-Changers State Representative Juanita O. Brent shares how the Library made a difference in her life. BY L AU R A WA LT E R

s State Representative Juanita O. Brent tells it, Cleveland Public Library changed the trajectory of her career—and set her on the course to become a state representative. Brent, who currently represents Ohio House District 12, turned to Cleveland Public Library when she was 23 years old and in need of professional guidance. At the time, she was working a low-paying job and faced uncertainty surrounding the next step in her career. Enter the Library’s Harvard-Lee Branch, which Brent began visiting on a regular basis as she contemplated her professional future. “This was before I had a smartphone, and I couldn’t afford the internet,” she explains. “Small barriers like that can stop us from moving forward.” The Library helped Brent overcome that barrier. For upwards of three months, she visited the Harvard-Lee Branch nearly every day to use the computers. In the process, library staff took notice. “The librarians built a relationship with me. They finally said, ‘Well, what are you trying to do? We see you here every day, how can we help you?’” Brent recalls. “That makes a difference—that someone took an interest in me.” 10 UpNext June–August 2019

The staff at Harvard-Lee guided Brent toward a career services program, which helped her learn how to improve her résumé by listing concrete goals she had achieved in a job during her college days. The program was particularly useful for a young adult like Brent who had finished college but was “still in that gray area of trying to find out where you’re going in life and how you’re going to get there.” The services Brent obtained for free at the Library not only helped her secure a better job, but helped prepare her for where she is today—and it’s all because Cleveland Public Library staff took an interest in her needs.

Transparency and Equality

Today, Brent remains a steadfast supporter of libraries. She often holds her house district office hours in the meeting rooms at public libraries as a way to signal that all constituents are welcome to meet with her. Most of all, she’s drawn to the fact that libraries offer free assistance equally to everyone. She estimates, for example, that the career assistance she obtained years ago at Harvard-Lee would have cost hundreds of dollars had she paid for the services.

“Our libraries our touching everyone, no matter [a person’s] economic level or race or background or religious beliefs,” Brent says. “So we need to support our libraries.” In her work as a state representative, Brent is particularly passionate about equity in educational services for children. Libraries, she says, help bridge the gap for children in low-income areas by providing free tutoring services and educational enrichment. She also appreciates libraries for providing access to the latest bestselling books; programs that help people live healthier, more fulfilled lives; and access to computers and digital literacy resources. For these reasons and more, Brent believes libraries have become anchors within Cleveland communities. She encourages the public to make use of libraries and to support them in any way possible—because you never know whose life will be changed by a library. “I’m so grateful I’m in a place now where I can say the Library helped me become the person I am today,” Brent says. “I’m a perfect example of how the Library can make a difference in a person’s life.”
