Thank You!

Dear Community Members, Since opening on June 12, 1911, Cleveland Public Library’s South Branch has been an important part of the Tremont community, a place where residents and visitors could learn, connect, and grow. But after more than a century of use, the original building began showing its age. When some structural and mechanical system failures came to light, we closed the building in 2013 and temporarily relocated the branch to 2704 Clark Avenue. All the while, we’ve solicited community feedback to determine how to best continue serving patrons and residents. Our many conversations made one thing clear: you wanted to retain the original Carnegie building on Scranton Road as South Branch’s home. We listened to your concerns, and we’re proud to say we’re now preparing to initiate the restoration process. We recently unveiled the design plans, which will expand the branch by an additional 1,600 square feet, add a community

room, ensure the facility is ADA-compliant, and more—all while preserving the character and distinctive design of the original building. Your feedback was critical during this process. Thank you for your comments, your vision, and your help in improving not only your neighborhood library, but your community as a whole.

WE DON’T HAVE PUBLIC LIBRARIES LIKE THIS IN AFRICA –Mayele Ngemba

LIBRARIES AS REFUGE Advocates 4 Peace and Change at Cleveland Public Library BY LAURA WALTER

W

hen Mayele Ngemba left Africa to come to the United States in 2011, he was eighteen years old and determined to build a new life Cleveland. A mere five years later, he set out to use his newly acquired skills to assist other refugees in the area. “Coming in as a refugee is tough,” he says. “That’s why I decided to try to help others.” Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ngemba and his family arrived in Cleveland by way of Uganda, where they’d fled in 2006 to escape attacks in their home country. Ngemba enrolled in Lincoln-West High School and graduated in 2013. He went on to earn an associate’s degree at Cuyahoga Community College and is now studying political science and urban studies at Cleveland State University. But Ngemba wasn’t satisfied with furthering his own education. In 2016, he set out to help other refugees in Cleveland by founding Advocates 4 Peace and Change, an organization that strives to assist refugees, particularly those from African and Arab countries who settled on the west side of Cleveland. Cleveland Public Library offered Ngemba the use of the meeting room at the Lorain Branch, which is centrally located for many members of this refugee population. The refugee group meets roughly once a week for informal learning activities and games led by volunteers from Middleburg Heights Community United Church of Christ. Attendees receive help with English, math, science, and the process of adjusting to a new country and culture. Ngemba has organized larger programs,

as well, such as a special event celebrating International Women’s Day and a trip to Washington, DC. Finally, Advocates 4 Peace and Change introduces refugees to the concept of public libraries. “We don’t have public libraries like this in Africa,” Ngemba explains. “It’s a surprise for refugees—now they can use a computer, have a place to go to, have a place to meet and interact. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the library’s resources. Not just refugees, but Americans who live here, too.” Shayna Muckerheide, Adult Outreach and Programming Coordinator and former Lorain Branch Manager, applauds Ngemba’s work and considers it a vital part of the Library’s services. “I hope this program shows that our libraries are open to all, including those new to America,” she says. “Our library can serve as a safe location for refugees and others to make friends, create communities, and access resources like books and DVDs. We offer a comfortable, warm place to become acclimated to America.” “America is a busy country,” Ngemba adds. “Sometimes [refugees] don’t see each other or leave their homes often. Coming to the library to play and interact can help bring back memories of home.” That sense of familiarity and camaraderie is part of what makes Advocates 4 Peace and Change so successful—and why it matters that Cleveland Public Library provides the meeting space. “Hosting the meetings at the Lorain Branch is convenient—we have access to books, resources, everything we need,” Ngemba says. “I’ve been offered other meeting spaces, but I want to stay at the library. We feel at home here.” The People’s University | cpl.org 3

BORN TO READ

Reading to Your Baby in the Womb BY REBECCA PRICE-DONAHUE way to reap the relaxation and relationshipbuilding benefits of this activity. Pick books you love. What on earth do you read to an unborn baby? Repetitive books with bouncy rhythms and rhymes are great choices for fetal ears. However, the most important thing to remember is to pick books that you love, and that you hope your baby will love, too!

Benefits

Develop Baby’s Brain By the third trimester, your baby’s ears are ready to hear! While a baby in utero hears what’s going on outside the womb at about 10 decibels lower than you do, the rhythm, melody, and other language patterns that serve as the foundation of speech are actually crystal clear. Wondering what the world sounds like to your baby? Try placing your hand over your mouth and speak. What you hear is very similar to how your voice sounds in the womb! Additional research suggests that thirdtrimester babies not only pick up on language patterns, but after birth, they can recognize words they first heard in the womb. Though the extent to which babies in utero can learn has yet to be determined, prenatal reading is nonetheless a wonderful way to kick-start healthy brain development. Reduce Stress Taking just a few minutes every day to kick back with a good book is a great way for anyone to relax, and it’s especially helpful

for expecting moms. Relaxation activities such as reading aloud are essential to a healthy pregnancy. Bond with Baby Studies show that third-trimester babies not only hear but also recognize the sound of their mother’s voice. Mom’s soothing tones cause a baby’s fetal heart rate to slow and can help establish auditory bonds that carry on after birth. Hearing Mom and Dad read solidifies these early bonds, and encouraging family participation helps others connect with the baby.

Do you have a favorite book that you or your partner read as a child? None are coming to mind? Take a walk through the children’s department of your neighborhood library and see what you remember. If you’re feeling unsure, talk to a librarian for recommendations. Children’s librarians are early literacy experts and will be happy to point you in the direction of some great titles. Get the family involved. Prenatal reading is a great bonding opportunity not only for moms, but also for a baby’s entire future family. Invite your partner, parents, or any loved ones to read to your baby. Do you have other children? Try asking a big brother or sister to select books to read with their sibling-to-be.

Build Good Habits Reading together is one of the best things you can do to help your child grow into a reader and a successful learner. Why not start now? Make reading a habit today, so it will be a part of your tomorrow.

Don’t turn up the volume. While you might be tempted to amplify your voice to help baby hear, experts advise skipping the speakers. Too much audio stimulation isn’t good for a baby’s developing brain or sleep cycles.

Tips

Have fun! Don’t worry about your voice, mispronounced words, or skipped-over sentences. Your baby isn’t going to judge you, so put your insecurities aside and use reading as a fun bonding activity.

Don’t worry about the time. Reading to your baby should always be a positive experience. Set a flexible schedule that works for you. Reading as little as 10 minutes every other day can be a great

ANGIE THOMAS

The bestselling author to discuss her YA novel, The Hate U Give BY LAURA WALTER

Sat, Feb 17 | 2pm

Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium 525 Superior Ave.

Angie Thomas, acclaimed author of The Hate U Give (HarperCollins, 2017), will discuss her bestselling YA novel at Cleveland Public Library on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 2pm. Lauded as an ambitious, timely novel that addresses racism, police violence, and the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give has become a bestselling sensation and is being adapted into a major feature film. The novel surrounds Starr Carter, a teenager whose unarmed friend Khalil is fatally shot by a police officer. As a witness to this tragedy, Starr finds herself at the center of a national controversy focusing on Khalil’s life and death. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called The Hate U Give “heartbreakingly topical,” while Kirkus Reviews praised Thomas’s skill in “laying bare the systemic racism that undergirds [Starr’s] world.” Reviewers far and wide have declared The Hate U Give required reading. “Angie Thomas’s novel speaks to some of the most complex and trying social issues our nation faces today,” said Felton Thomas Jr., Executive Director of Cleveland Public Library. “We hope Clevelanders take the opportunity to hear Thomas discuss her writing, how current events shaped her vision, and how fiction can empower young people.” The Hate U Give takes its title from Tupac Shakur’s THUG LIFE tattoo. Thomas, who cites Tupac as an inspiration, told NPR in a recent interview, “I often say that I want to write like Tupac rapped. I could listen to his album and within a few minutes, I could go from thinking deeply to laughing

to crying to partying. And that’s what I want to do as a writer—I want to make you think at times; I want to make you laugh at times; I want to make you cry at times—so he was an influence in that way.” In this special event, Thomas will discuss her novel, transforming the political into the personal, the film adaptation process, and more. An audience Q&A will follow the presentation.
