Young Scholars’ Academy

Learn to Read & Succeed!

Weekly program prepares children and their caregivers for Kindergarten. All lessons are based on the Ohio Department of Education Learning Standards.

Register for one of these age-appropriate sessions:

Beginner: ages 3 - 4

Transitional: ages 4 - 6

Scholars who register for the Transitional session must be Kindergarten eligible for the coming school year.

Begin Raising Readers

These storytimes are designed for specific developmental levels to help children gain language and pre-reading skills. Sessions foster early literacy skills and build social and emotional skills. Parents and caregivers learn simple, fun ways to incorporate literacy into everyday activities. Visit cpl.org/kids-teens/storytime

Bouncing Babies & Books (ages

0-18 months)

This lap-sit storytime offers stories, rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and other fun activities that build pre-literacy skills, enhance bonding, and provide social skills for little ones.

Wee Read and Play (ages 18 months - 3 years)

Caregivers are invited to develop their toddler’s language and social skills through stories, active songs, rhymes, and time for play.

Preschool Storytime (ages 3 - 5)

Storytimes for preschoolers include songs, activities, and rhymes designed to support reading readiness and foster the social and emotional skills that kids need to succeed as they enter Kindergarten.

STORYTIMES FOR DIVERSE-ABILITIES

Families and children of all abilities are invited to a story and playtime in a supportive environment adapted to children with sensory needs. Interactive stories, a visual schedule, dim light, softer music, sensory and fidget toys, and ability to move freely suits a variety of learning styles. Events include giveaways while supplies last. Add your voice to the mosaic of Cleveland voices to tell the story of our city. Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate, Ray McNiece, leads monthly intergenerational and multicultural poetry workshops. Poem for Cleveland, an anthology of the works created from the project, will be published by Red Giant Press. This project is made possible by the Academy of American Poets with funds from the Mellon Foundation.

Family Food Boxes (select locations including Youth Services, Main Library, 4th floor) Adults and families may pick up a free 20- to 30-pound box of non-perishable dry goods including nutritional foods such milk, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, and canned fruits, vegetables, and tuna.

Library cards are available to adults, children, and teens who reside, work, or attend an educational institution in the State of Ohio.

NEW!

Bar-coded Cleveland Metropolitan School District student IDs and RTA passes now double as Cleveland Public Library cards, allowing students to check out books and access other library materials and resources.

Special Scholar Success Library Cards are available to young people age 17 and under. To get your Scholar Success card, visit any Cleveland Public Library location and ask a staff member.

eCards are available for access to electronic resources such as ebooks, emedia, research databases, etc. Apply online at cpl.org.

Educator Cards are available to teachers in schools or licensed childcare centers.
