We will achieve these aims by providing a safe environment where all children and young people can succeed and through: • Provision of a curriculum that is stretching, relevant and provides each student with the opportunity to excel • High expectations of every member of our community • E xcellent teaching, leading to the highest standards of academic excellence • The best standards of behaviour based upon our values of mutual respect, self-discipline and self-confidence • A respect for tradition that embraces innovation and challenge

CRAYFORD ACADEMY

WELCOME Welcome to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation. Our three Academies provide an education for children aged 3 – 18 in South London. We have been educating young people in this part of London since 1876 and throughout that time our approach has been epitomised by high standards and academic excellence, a tradition that continues today. Our values of aspiration and achievement, personal responsibility, self-discipline and mutual respect are evident in all our work and result in young people who develop and grow as independent, resourceful and resilient individuals. Our commitment is that, working in partnership with you, we can ensure your child gets the best possible start in life. All children and young people who attend our schools have the opportunity to gain academic qualifications to equip them well for the next stage of their life, but we provide so much more than that. Our vision is that by the time young people leave us they will have experienced a whole range of opportunities that not only build their mind, but also build their character. As a result they are fully prepared to be successful in their adult lives as workers, as parents and as partners. Adrian Percival – Chief Executive

Principal’s Welcome “ Strong and determined leadership from the principal, senior leaders and the governing body account for the academy’s successes.” OFSTED 2012

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy is an all through 3–18 school which serves the local Crayford and Slade Green communities in the London Borough of Bexley. We know that all our pupils have the potential to be successful. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that they all have the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in a meaningful way, often outside the confines of traditional subjects and classrooms. It is the aim of the Crayford Academy, along with the other Haberdashers’ Federation schools, that our pupils leave with the skills and resilience needed to be happy and successful in a modern society throughout their adult lives. With this in mind, Crayford Academy provides a safe, rigorous and challenging learning environment for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds to develop as well adjusted young adults. Our expectations are extremely high in terms of pupil achievement, behaviour and uniform and we insist that pupils behave respectfully towards others and their environment. We believe that Crayford has a great deal to offer your child and I hope that you agree. I look forward to meeting you and working with you over the coming years in ensuring the very best for your child. David Willis – Principal

ACADEMIC ATTAINMENT

An all through Academy offers a curriculum experience that continues and integrates from age 3 – 18. All primary phase children have an automatic right of entry to the secondary phase. Transition is seamless between years 6 and 7 as well as progression through the other key stages. Primary and secondary teachers work together and share expertise allowing excellent opportunities for sharing resources, learning from each other and pupil and teacher exchange.

The Academy offers co-education to the primary phase and wherever possible single sex teaching in years 7 – 11. It is the strong view of the Federation that students in the secondary phase learn more effectively in single sex classes. However, the benefits of a co-educational community are recognised and all house, enrichment and extra-curricular activities are co-educational. Post 16 classes are offered across the Federation and are co-educational. The achievement of boys and girls is equally matched and we aim to satisfy the aspirations and goals of all our students.

It provides the opportunities for every student to excel by instilling high expectations in every member of our community, while meeting the needs of the individual learner. Our curriculum, incorporating knowledge, skills, attributes and experiences, leads to the highest standards of academic excellence and is supported by excellent teaching. The curriculum promotes the best standards of behaviour based on our values of mutual respect, self-discipline and self-confidence; it encourages respect for tradition, while embracing innovation by joining up learning and opening up the worlds of all our students.

TECHNOLOGY SPECIALISM Crayford Academy promotes excellence in all aspects of technology education, with all students engaging with technology in all key stages. It uses its specialist status to raise standards of achievement and the quality of learning in design and technology. In addition to this the curriculum has a strong mathematics and science focus across all age and ability ranges. The specialism permeates all areas of the curriculum and is evident throughout the Academy. It contributes to whole school improvement by developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning. It is a requirement that all students study a technology subject up to the end of KS4.

The entire Haberdashers’ family of schools are well known for their high levels of achievement in music. It is encouraged and nurtured at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy, contributing much to its ethos and spirit. From September 2012 Crayford Academy will introduce a new specialism in music. A proportion of the places available in year 7 will be offered to applicants with an aptitude in music. The Academy has links with the Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) which suitable musicians will be encouraged to audition for.

ENRICHMENT “ staff STrIVE TO ensure students of all backgrounds, different talents or with particular difficulties are fully included in academy life.” OFSTED 2012

The Academy provides an extensive range of educational opportunities outside of the normal schedule of lessons. These are offered across all key stages and can take the form of after school clubs and activities, house events, local trips, sports events, music and drama productions and residential visits, including activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Enrichment gives both breadth and the opportunity for crosscurricular work within the Academy and provides a perfect opportunity for our older pupils to work with the primary children. Indeed the enrichment programme is a key element of our all-through curriculum. All pupils are expected to involve themselves fully in these additional activities.

COMMUNITY The Academy is an important part of the local community in Crayford and is involved in many community events. For example, the Community Christmas Carol Service was held at the school as well as the Lord Mayor of Bexley’s annual dinner. We have a very close association with the Crayford Rotary Club and Crayford Arrows Sports Club. Recently the Academy facilities have been used by various groups, including church and sports to host events and activities.
