LEARNING
MATTERS
Learning and teaching lies at the heart of everything we do. Students are provided with high quality learning experiences. Students are engaged by creative and innovative teaching that enables them to confidently acquire new skills, knowledge and understanding, and to take increasing responsibility for their own learning. The quality of learning and teaching is systematically monitored and there is a relentless evaluation of each student’s progress. Teachers intervene and modify the learning experience to ensure excellence becomes a habit and that the highest outcomes are secured. At Northolt High School we recognise that learning can only be truly differentiated if we have a clear picture of the potential, learning needs and prior attainment of our students. All staff have a thorough understanding of individual student data. Data is used effectively to ensure lessons are planned to provide the maximum amount of intellectual challenge for every student regardless of ability or educational need, and as a result, students make good progress.

A Nurturing
Environment At Northolt High School, students from diverse backgrounds form positive relationships and there is mutual respect across the school. The curriculum provides numerous opportunities for students to explore their beliefs and to develop values which enable them to become valuable members of the school and wider communities. Older students are given opportunities to act as role models to younger students and this includes mentoring and leadership through a supported Reading Programme. We want our students to be confident, articulate and socially skilled as well as to have a strong sense of their place in society. Students are supported by a range of staff who are nurturing and skilled in meeting their needs. Our School Council ensures that every student has a voice and that students are active participants in shaping the upward trajectory of the school. We place great emphasis on the transition from primary to secondary school. Year 7 students quickly feel part of our community; they flourish through opportunities to access the wider curriculum and enrichment activities.

Challenging and Fulfilling
Curriculum We offer a curriculum which is broad and balanced and meets the needs of the full range of learners. It includes a rare opportunity for students to benefit from cycling as part of the formal curriculum. We have extensive grounds which include an All Weather Pitch, a Sports Hall and a sports field. There is a rich extracurricular programme which supports our commitment and belief in the importance of learning in the classroom and beyond the classroom. Educational visits, both within the UK and abroad, widen our students’ experiences and perspectives, develop language acquisition and support their development as social beings.

Successful
Sixth Form Our sixth form is a purposeful learning community with high academic standards, supporting our students to enter higher and further education or training. Our students go on to a number of institutions including universities in the Russell Group. We offer a range of academic and vocational subjects which enables our students to secure qualifications, skills and attitudes for a successful future. Students have a purpose built centre with a common room and an ICT resourced study room. They benefit from taking part in extracurricular activities and from supporting the learning of our younger students. Further leadership development opportunities are available through our Student Leadership Programme.

A Learning
Community At Northolt High School there are clear expectations for students’ behaviour and a strong emphasis on key values such as self discipline, self respect and endeavour. Our students show pride in the school and in their work. They display positive attitudes to learning and are eager to do well. There is a culture of high expectation and this can be seen in the emphasis we place on students’ appearance. We believe that dressing smartly sets the tone and supports our ethos for achievement. Our most recent Ofsted Report remarked that “Students behave impeccably as they move around the school, showing great courtesy and respect to one another and to staff and visitors. They show pride in their school and in their work.” It is our fundamental belief that supporting our students to develop strength of character, coupled with the achievement of excellent academic outcomes, is more likely to ensure ongoing success in future life.
“ Staff care about us here. We feel like we are part of a family.” Student Quote
