SHINE GROW COMMUNICATE
we will all fulfil our unique, God-given potential
Saint Gabriel’s College is a small, inclusive Church of England school. We offer places to students of all faiths and backgrounds who are willing to support our Christian ethos and values. Our aims
Our values
Each and every student will:
Service to others – being generous with our time, talents and money, and working for justice – for ourselves, for others and the environment. We offer service by considerate, courteous behaviour and practical actions, and through leadership and volunteering.
Shine – achieving the best possible results to ensure a bright future. Grow – developing into a caring, confident and self-disciplined adult with strong aspirations. Communicate – expressing their views and individuality confidently and respectfully.
Generosity of Spirit – showing compassion and kindness towards other people. We show forgiveness when someone has hurt us, striving for reconciliation and valuing human relationships. We respect ourselves and other people, especially those whose opinions, faith or culture are different from our own. Commitment to excellence – showing endurance when we are finding things difficult. We learn to show self-control in our words and our actions. We expect everyone to work hard to the best of their ability, to be on time with the equipment they need, and to look smart and professional.
SHINE
A BRIGHTER FUTURE
Our students are described by Ofsted as “cheerful, courteous and show consideration for others as a result of the school’s strong emphasis on moral values and on understanding what is right and what is wrong.”
Religious Education and Collective Worship
As an inclusive Church of England College, we emphasise high-quality Religious Education and collective worship. Religious Education lessons teach respect for all backgrounds and beliefs, as well as exploring the roots of our Christian identity. We hold a daily act of collective worship, which brings us together as a community. We hold regular services in our school chapel, and on special occasions we go to our parish church, St John the Divine. Our full-time Chaplain supports the worship and spiritual life our College. The Chaplain is available to offer pastoral care to anyone in College, and ensures provision for particular religious needs. Any parent wishing to withdraw their son or daughter from all or part of collective worship or RE lessons must do so in writing to the College Chaplain.
“ Students in this diverse community have very harmonious relationships with each other and with adults.” Ofsted 2013
“ The school chaplain plays an important part in creating the atmosphere in which the students thrive, for example in the provision for students of times each day for quiet reflection that contribute strongly to their spiritual development.” Ofsted 2013
our learning “ The curriculum is well planned and matches the needs of students with a balance of academic and vocational courses.” Ofsted 2013 At Saint Gabriel’s College we offer a broad and balanced curriculum with an emphasis on traditional subjects. In Year 7, 8 and 9 all students experience and make progress in a wide range of subjects. We ensure that all our students achieve at least 8 good grades at GCSE including English and Mathematics. All students follow a programme that will ensure a route to further study. The majority of students in year 10 and 11 will undertake a programme that will enable them to study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science in addition to a Language and either History or Geography. Students can also choose from a wide range of subjects including creative and vocational subjects to suit their needs and to ensure they enjoy their learning and meet their potential. There is a wealth of extra-curricular opportunity before and after school to allow students to follow interests and develop their skills and talent. In 2013 100% of our students secured places to study at college or sixth forms. Successful former alumni regularly visit the school to talk to them about university and world of work.
“ Almost all students progress to further education, training or employment on leaving the school as a result of the excellent guidance they receive about their futures.” Ofsted 2013

how we learn “Saint Gabriel’s College is one of the best in the country in outperforming expectations for their pupils and improving their future prospects. There is plenty that other schools could learn from Saint Gabriel’s College’s success.” SSAT 2013 At Saint Gabriel’s College our teachers deliver lessons that enable students to acquire a depth of knowledge and skills through planned activities and independent study. Students are encouraged to develop their intellectual curiosity and learn the skills that will allow them to succeed. Classes at Saint Gabriel’s College are smaller than the average which allows us to give students lots of tailored support. Our teachers personalise the learning so that students of all abilities and whatever their needs are challenged, and supported, so that they achieve their God-given potential. Our most gifted students are not only stretched and challenged within lessons but are able to participate in speaker events and university visits, including with our partner college at Cambridge University, St John’s.
“The school’s powerful value system and unyielding belief in the talents of every individual give momentum to the ambition of leaders and managers in the school.” Ofsted 2013
We are aspirational for our students. They have individual personalised targets and we rigorously monitor their progress against these during the year, so that they make above expected progress. Students receive regular feedback through marking and assessment. We publicly celebrate those that are on track towards their aspirational targets. Our culture and ethos supports this and the positive learning environment in our small school enable students to excel.
“Saint Gabriel’s College should be congratulated for their stunning performance in adding value to their student’s achievements.” SSAT 2013
SUPPORT FOR LEARNING The college provides exceptional support for students with additional needs. Our specialist Support for Learning team works alongside teaching staff and a whole range of external professionals including Speech and Language therapists and Educational Psychologists, in order to ensure that all our students reach their full potential both academically and socially. We remove barriers to learning and provide intervention and resources that facilitate progress. We offer reading and literacy catch up for those students who need extra support as well as small group tutorials. Our team of Learning Support Assistants and English as an Additional Language Mentors works closely with teachers to ensure that work is differentiated for the needs of every student in each class. We also offer a range of specialist counselling and mentoring services. We believe in forging close links with families in order to better understand our young people’s needs and ensure a holistic approach to accessing learning.
“Those who have special educational needs make better than expected progress and make significantly better progress than their peers nationally.” Ofsted 2013
“A welcoming ,orderly environment where students thrive.” Ofsted 2013
WIDER learning Saint Gabriel’s College has an inclusive and welcoming culture, underpinned by the Christian values and ethos of the school. Students are welcoming and supportive of each other and visitors. Community culture is evident in the learning environment in addition to the range of activities that students enjoy outside the classroom. “Spiritual, moral and social development is promoted very effectively.” Ofsted 2013
OUR CARE Every student is placed in a small, all-age family group, called an Advisory group, which is overseen by an Adviser. Each Advisory belongs to one of three Learning Communities which provide a strong sense of community and offer opportunities for charity work and active citizenship. The Head of Learning Community, working closely with a full-time Pastoral Officer, oversees the academic progress
and personal development of every student in their Community. The Learning Community team monitors attendance, punctuality and student wellbeing, and is the first point of contact between College and home. Students wear their Learning Community tie with pride and enjoy the sense of belonging provided by the pastoral system.
“This school is truly inclusive with pastoral support of the highest quality.” Ofsted 2013

In addition to the curriculum we have a wide range of musical groups, and links with the British Film Institute. We encourage all students to learn a musical instrument, and offer music scholarships to 10% of our students each year.
