Try, Persevere, Achieve
“As a result of good teaching, children in the Early Years Foundation Stage make good progress, particularly in writing. Pupils enjoy school, are enthusiastic about learning and feel very safe. Ofsted May 2014
Welcome
From the Executive Principal Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus. This will give a flavour of our Academy, but please book a visit if you would like your child to join us. Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred is a three form entry Academy located in the heart of Chafford Hundred, which is a modern development bordering Lakeside, Thurrock and serving a vibrant and diverse community. Chafford Hundred has good links to central London as well as being accessible from Kent and Essex. We are proud that our Academy benefits from a modern, well equipped school building with exciting playground and sports facilities. We have a modern Nursery building which provides education for 52 pupils on a part time basis. Our vision is to give every child coming into the Academy an education they enjoy, which both inspires and prepares them for academic and personal success now and in the future. All the staff and Governors share this vision and work together to make sure this becomes a reality. Our staff team are all committed to ensuring every child can enjoy and excel in their learning, confidence and creativity. We celebrate all our children’s achievements from both in school and outside school activities. We also offer an excellent after school and breakfast club, ensuring we stay open from 7.45 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. each day.
We work closely with our colleagues in other Harris Primary Academies and Free Schools and we benefit from the additional opportunities provided by working across the federation. The opening of our sister academy, Harris Primary Academy Mayflower in September 2014 has given us opportunities under one Executive Principal to share ideas, successes and resources in order to develop outstanding primary education in Chafford Hundred. The achievements of our children come about because of the hard work, commitment and professionalism of all of the staff here and the support of parents and we have deliberately forged close partnership links, which is no more evident than through the success of our PTA in recent years. Please take the time to visit us, and I hope you decide this is the place to educate your child. Matthew Britt BA (Hons) QTS. NPQH Executive Principal Ms Tracey Boanas Principal

Learning Through the 7Ps What is the purpose of the 7Ps? The 7Ps underpin effective teaching which results in effective learning. It ensures our provision of high-quality education and the improvement of life chances for pupils in the community. Our aim is to provide the best possible primary education in a stimulating and creative environment. We want to develop a passion for learning, inspired by high-quality teaching and modelling along with developing and building upon individual strengths and talents.
Positive teaching
Participation
Children learn quickly in the positive climate. With positive teaching children feel comfortable in taking risks in their learning.
A strong feature of all lessons is partner work and the partners ‘teaching’ each other (based on research which states that we learn 70% of what we talk about with our partner and 90% of what we teach).
Pace Good pace is essential to the lesson without it children get bored and the learning purpose is lost.
Purpose Every part of the lesson has a specific purpose.
Passion The energy, enthusiasm and passion that teachers put into the lesson that bring the teaching and learning to life!

Potential Through detailed assessment, targeting and careful planning we ensure all pupils reach their potential.
Progress We report progress to parents each term and we ensure all staff understand that for all children, whatever their starting point, progress needs to be at least good, with much outstanding.
A Clear Approach to Teaching the Basic Skills From Nursery to Year 6, our children develop their Reading and Writing and their Speaking and Listening skills to be able to use their knowledge in a wide range of situations. In the early years we use the Read, Write, Inc approach to teaching early reading and phonic skills. We ensure that all children from Nursery to Year 6 have a reading book and journal and we hear them all read each week. Mathematics is taught using a balance of the Singapore approach and lessons learnt from the visit of two of our key staff members to see mathematics education in Shanghai, China. This approach is ensuring that our pupils have a methodology which ensures they understand number and number relationships fully so that they can apply this knowledge into practical problem solving and calculations.
Our Nursery also includes ICAN provision for children with speech, language and communication needs. In addition to a wide range of books, our children use ICT, including computers, cameras and mp3 recorders, to develop effective language and communication skills.
“Since moving my child to Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred, I’ve seen her grow in confidence and she now reads for pleasure.” Parent of a Year 3 Pupil

An Enriched Curriculum Creates World Citizens Our children understand they are part of our Academy, our locality and our world. They take responsibility as School Council members, fundraisers, Sports Leaders and in many other ways. Classes raise money for a variety of local and national charities. Our children represent our Academy at sporting, musical and dance events. Our assembly programme teaches pupils about the wider world, as well as cultural and religious differences.
“I love the weekly homework that comes home, as it is simple to understand and extends what my child has been learning in school. Parent of a Year 2 Pupil

In turn, we recognise their positive behaviour by awarding House Points and Merit Awards. We hold a weekly celebration assembly, as well as a half termly special merit award celebration, to which parents may join us. Children also show off their learning through a regular programme of class assemblies which are performed in front of parents. Our children have wider opportunities music funding in Key Stage 2 which ensures they all learn an instrument, free of charge and they can go on two residential visits, to a farm in Year 5 and an outward bounds centre in Year 6. In addition to this we offer breakfast club from 7.45 a.m. and after school activities until 6.00 p.m. ensuring that for those children whose parents are working there is access to an enriched and exciting programme of extended learning activities.

Learning Environment Our children benefit from a well equipped Academy in a bright, spacious and modern building.

Displays are seen as an essential part of the learning environment and we have a rich variety of process displays which aim to support learning, balanced by celebration displays which share the excellent maths, writing and artwork created by our pupils.
Keeping Healthy Children at our Academy take part in regular PE and sports activities, led by our specialist Sports Teacher or their class teachers.
Swimming lessons are held at local swimming pools. Children are taught about healthy lifestyles as part of Science and PSHE lessons. We have a range of sports teams and have won regional trophies in netball, rugby, cricket and football in the past year. We share catering services with Harris Academy Chafford Hundred and children have access to a menu which offers a range of healthy eating choices.
Working in Partnership Parents are invited to target-setting and progress meetings each term. We also hold a range of workshops to share information about how best to support your child’s learning. A weekly newsletter, emails and our website keep parents informed about their children and about the Academy. We use a text service for emergency messages. At the beginning of the academic year, each year group team meets the parents to explain routines and how the curriculum will work.
“I loved the maths workshops and it helped me understand why my child learns how to calculate the way she does.” Parent of a Year 1 Pupil

Applying For A Place We have 90 places available in each year group. We do not go above these numbers because that is the limit where our staff and our building can really make a difference to each child’s learning.

Admissions through the year or to other year groups are also through Thurrock Council Education Department. A Federation of Academies Our school is part of the Harris Federation. This is a not-for-profit charity with almost twenty five years of experience of education in London. The charity was created by Lord Harris of Peckham. He and his family take an active interest in our achievements and the progress of our pupils.
From the Chief Executive Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred is a successful local school with happy pupils who enjoy learning and an excellent team of leaders, teachers and support staff.
Every Harris Academy is different, serving its own pupils and community, but we share an ethos that ensures children are happy, enjoy learning and want to go to school.
In work and in play, its pupils are taught the importance of traditional values: good manners and behaviour, enthusiasm and recognising right from wrong.
Being part of the Harris Federation means that our teachers and support staff have access to excellent training and resources from a team of experts in primary education.
It combines this emphasis on traditional values with the very best of modern teaching methods and technology.
All Harris Academies are located in and around London, with three of us here in Thurrock, and we work very closely together. Our teachers get together to share their best ideas and develop successful ways of teaching pupils. Our children also come together for events such as the annual Battle of the Brains contest and, each summer, the Harris Federation Sports Day. You can find out more about the Harris Federation at www.harrisfederation.org.uk or by following @HarrisFed on Twitter.
The Harris Federation is a charity with more than
20 years experience of running successful schools in London. I hope that you will visit Harris Primary Academy Chafford Hundred at one of its Open Days and that you are as excited as we are about all the fantastic opportunities it provides.
