SIXTH FORM S H A R I N G E XC E L L E N C E

THE LEADERSHIP OF THE SIXTH FORM IS OUTSTANDING. A DEDICATED TEAM ENSURES THE HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF EVERY STUDENT, CAREFULLY CHECKING AND MONITORING BOTH ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL PROGRESS. MUTUAL RESPECT AND REGARD PERMEATE THE SIXTH FORM CENTRE AND ALL HAVE THE HIGHEST ASPIRATIONS FOR SUCCESS. Ofsted

Welcome 01 Judged by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’, IN 2009 AND AGAIN IN 2014, our post-16 provision continues to go from strength to strength. With a bespoke Sixth Form Centre, a broad curriculum, excellent teaching and a caring ethos, Dunraven’s Sixth Form provides an excellent platform for young people to extend their learning and prepare for university or employment. The majority of Dunraven students decide to stay on to our Sixth Form, where they study alongside students from other schools within the successful South London Sixth (SL6) partnership. We have high aspirations for our Sixth Formers and support them to develop an independent approach to their studies. As a result, Dunraven Sixth Formers are very successful and are able to gain places at the university of their choice – including Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities – or progress into their chosen career. Of course, Sixth Form life offers so much more than academic study and we encourage students to participate in sporting activities, enrichment events and community service. In this way, they appreciate what it means to be positive and responsible citizens who enjoy life and make a valuable contribution to society. In Dunraven’s welcoming community, each student is valued as an individual and celebrated for the unique qualities that he or she brings. Our experienced staff support students as they prepare for their next steps in life so that they become capable, confident and resilient young adults. An exciting

PLACE TO

02 With a broad curriculum, highly qualified teachers and state-ofthe-art facilities, our Sixth Form experience is unrivalled locally. As a founding member of the SL6 collaboration, which includes The Elmgreen, La Retraite and St Martin-in-the-Fields schools, we are able to offer our Sixth Form students a huge range of academic and vocational courses. These include: A2, AS, GCE Applied and BTEC qualifications; the innovative AQA Baccalaureate; an Extended Project; Massive open online courses (MOOCs); and enrichment activities. The SL6 partnership provides a degree of flexibility that is rare in post-16 provision, allowing students to shape their studies around their strengths, passions and career goals. A shuttle-bus service facilitates students’ movement between sessions. Our experienced staff use dynamic teaching techniques to ensure that lessons are engaging for all students and our lower than average class sizes support a personalised approach to learning. Teachers take advantage of the many opportunities for Continuing Professional Development and the sharing of best practice across the SL6 network, raising standards even further. Dunraven’s Sixth Form Centre features spacious teaching rooms, impressive computer facilities and WiFi access, as well as a relaxing social space for students with a kitchen area. Sixth Formers benefit from a dedicated Learning and Resources Centre, which offers not only a traditional library but also extensive on-line resources in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

A supportive

COMMUNITY

Students receive individual care and support to help them achieve their best, develop their goals and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

05 When they begin Year 12, students are supported in the transition to post-16 education to help them become confident and independent learners. Each student has a Personal Tutor, supported by the Director and the Deputy Director of Sixth. Tutor groups meet every day and there are also regular opportunities for students to have one-to-one time with their Tutor to discuss any academic or pastoral issues. Students are set challenging targets to ensure that they achieve the highest possible standards. In addition to regular feedback in the classroom, assessments of effort and attainment in each subject every half term – followed by individual discussions with Personal Tutors – ensure that students and their families understand their progress and how to improve further. The most able students participate in the SEO Scholars programme, realising opportunities, receiving advice from university and industry mentors, undertaking work experience with leading employers and getting specialist support for Oxbridge and Russell Group applications. Our young people continue to benefit from Dunraven’s effective Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). They participate in a number of ‘carousel’ events throughout the year, some of which feature guest speakers from leading charities, parliament, business, science and the arts. Sixth Formers rise to the challenge of being role models for the rest of the school and ambassadors in the local community. We expect them to study hard, support one another and take pride in their personal appearance as they become responsible young adults.

SIXTH FORMERS VALUE THE EXCELLENT TEACHING WHICH THEY RECEIVE, REGULARLY PRESENT THEIR WORK, INVOLVE THEMSELVES IN DISCUSSIONS AND SHARE VIEWS. THEY SAY THAT THIS HELPS THEM TO DEEPEN THEIR UNDERSTANDING AND CONTINUE TO IMPROVE. OFSTED

An enriching

07 In addition to their studies, our young people participate in a wealth of enrichment activities that help to develop the well-rounded character so valued by universities and employers. Our students enjoy the use of facilities at Crystal Palace Sports Centre every Wednesday, where they can take part in swimming, diving, trampolining, fitness conditioning, basketball, badminton and football, as well as seasonal sports such as cricket and tennis. At school, we offer a range of extra-curricular clubs including table tennis, yoga, self-defence, choirs, bands, Zumba, martial arts and cookery. A rich programme of dramatic productions, musical concerts and arts events allows students to showcase their many talents, while our links with the English National Opera, Old and Young Vic theatres, South Bank Centre and British Film Institute provide a number of exciting opportunities. Students’ horizons are broadened by university visits and conferences, residential stays in the UK and abroad and guest

speakers from all walks of life who visit the school to share their experiences. The majority of Sixth Formers choose to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award scheme, which helps to develop their initiative, perseverance and communication skills. Our students have many opportunities to cultivate their leadership abilities, taking on a variety of responsible roles such as House Captain, Head Boy or Head Girl, Prefect, member of the Sixth Form Council, representative on the SL6 Committee or Duke of Edinburgh Ambassador. They also act as Literacy or Maths Mentors to younger students. We also encourage them to take volunteering roles in the local community, such as placements in primary schools, nurseries, care homes and charity shops.

The confidence to

aim high

Recognising the importance of the next step in our students’ lives, Sixth Form staff work hard to give them practical and personalised support to help them shape their future.

By raising aspirations and providing detailed advice, an already large and increasing number of our students achieve a place at one of the UK’s top 20 universities. On our annual ‘Futures and Careers Day’, universities and local employers are invited to Dunraven, where students and their families can discover more about courses and options. Sixth Formers are also encouraged to attend a minimum of five university open days and summer schools, in order to get a taste of life on campus, and all students visit a UCAS Convention at which many universities and colleges exhibit. Our Higher Education Co-ordinator arranges one-to-one sessions to help with UCAS applications. This process includes mock interviews with the student’s Personal Tutor, the relevant Directors of Learning (subject heads), the Director of Sixth and the Principal. We also enlist the help of ex-Admissions Tutors and our alumni, who come into school to share their expertise. We encourage our young people to undertake two types of work experience, helping them to gain placements in a variety of organisations including parliament and firms in the City. Foreign language students are assisted to gain work placements abroad where possible, as well as to participate in exchange programmes. Students wanting to begin their career on leaving Dunraven are given personalised support in job applications and CV writing. They also participate in mock interviews and receive constructive feedback.
