The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) Miltoncross Academy is part of TKAT. At the heart of TKAT are the students and their right to have an outstanding education in order to give them the best life chances. The foundation of the TKAT model is based on school to school support to ensure that the very best standards of teaching and learning are developed and that schools are equipped to enable all staff and students to make outstanding progress.

Welcome to Miltoncross Academy We are committed to achieving and maintaining a high quality innovative education ensuring that every student has high aspirations and progresses to their maximum potential and beyond.

We are a fully inclusive and accessible school that recognises the importance of skills and exam qualifications at all levels. We provide an environment in which every student can develop personally and where students, and other learners, feel safe, secure and are supported by clear discipline policies. Our priority is teaching and learning. We are all focused on our students becoming successful adults and members of the community. Miltoncross Academy enhances our students’ ability to make informed decisions, sustain a livelihood, adopt new technologies, be resilient, cope with shocks and be responsible citizens.

Our Vision and Values Our core purpose is to improve the life chances of our students by providing an outstanding educational experience. Through innovative and creative approaches to teaching and learning we will build our students’ self-confidence and resilience, challenge their assumptions and raise their aspirations. We are fully inclusive, thereby enabling all learners to achieve their potential. Our annual Improvement Plan will set out the key priorities for the year which will include robust and distinct indicators focusing on the impact of student progress and attainment, addressing OFSTED’s improvement points and the values of The Kemnal Academies Trust. Fiona Calderbank Headteacher

We will equip our students with the skills, knowledge and values that will empower them to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives as global 21st Century citizens.

The key priority for the school is what goes on within the classroom and the impact that good and outstanding teaching has on the progress of learners. Teachers at Miltoncross Academy are highly accountable for the progress of the students in their classes. We are constantly reviewing and improving classroom practice to ensure that it is relevant, creative and successful.

Curriculum We constantly review our curriculum to ensure that it meets national and learner requirements. We ensure that it is well balanced, fosters curiosity and meets the needs of modern society so that every child has the best possible chance in life after they leave us.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) Students study: English, mathematics, science, a modern foreign language (Spanish or French), geography, history, religious studies, computer studies, art, drama, music, technology and physical education.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) Students study: English, mathematics, science, a modern foreign language, physical education, three option subjects and either religious studies or information and communication technology. Through challenging targets and close monitoring of achievement, we ensure that all students make the best possible progress. Setting in core subjects allows them to work at maximum pace. There are intervention and booster programmes for students that are not achieving expected progress or above and gifted and talented challenges in all subjects. We are keen to engage students through technology and have support for Academy learning through the school website.

The Learning Experience 2

“ The curriculum has been well planned and provides a suitable structure for students to progress effectively, regardless of ability. The school has changed the subjects that it teaches so that students can be more successful. OFSTED

Partnership with Parents At Miltoncross Academy we believe that our learners will fulfil their potential when we all work together.

That means making sure that you, as parents, always know what is going on, through annual written reports, termly progress reports, Parents Evenings, and Progress Review days. The House System also allows easy communication to the Tutor, Head of House and Assistant Head of House. We take account of your opinion through surveys and speaking to parents and change our practice in the light of our findings. We have regular meetings with parents. Each child has a school planner which is used as a first step for every day contact with the Tutor and subject Teachers. Termly reports provide you with detailed information about how your child is progressing and we run subject specific workshops so you can gain an understanding of the ever changing requirements of the school classroom and the examinations system.

Extended Learning Students in Year 7 have an extended school day from Monday to Thursday. After school finishes they have a break and a ‘Pit Stop’ (drink and a snack). They then follow a programme of supported study in the core areas of English, maths, science, humanities and languages along with a choice of enrichment activities. This improves individual student progress, gets students into the routine of independent learning and homework, and solves some after school childcare issues for working parents.

The School Climate for Learning and Ethos We have high expectations of personal conduct. Miltoncross Academy is a professional working environment, students and staff are expected to dress and conduct themselves in accordance with this, displaying courtesy, consideration and tolerance at all times.

Students are actively praised and rewarded for good conduct, hard work and progress. We have ‘VIVO miles’ which is a whole school reward system where learners earn VIVO miles = rewards. Our house system echoes the naval heritage of Portsmouth: • Fearless • Illustrious

• Intrepid • Invincible

Each House consists of vertical Tutor groups made up of students of all ages, led by a member of the Senior Leadership Team, who is supported by a non-teaching Assistant Head of House. The House system engenders a sense of identity within a smaller family unit providing more individual care for students. Healthy competition will be encouraged between students for calendared events across the curriculum and through inter-house challenges. The Head of House role ensures that the progress, behaviour and engagement of students is monitored across subject areas and across each year group. Siblings will always be put in the same house, but not the same tutor group. With an ethos of positivity, camaraderie and support for each other we encourage students to take pride in their school community.

Attendance and Punctuality If you are not here you cannot learn! Good attendance is vital in ensuring that students reach their full potential. Absence and lateness are closely monitored.

“ Students enjoy having to solve problems, working together and having the opportunity to consolidate their learning or apply new skills in different settings.” OFSTED

We provide an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities through which students extend learning, build teamwork and social skills, tackle challenges and build up their resilience.

Students have the opportunity to enjoy a host of educational day trips and residential stays that enhance the curriculum, both in the UK and abroad. Students raise considerable sums for a range of charities – particularly the annual Children in Need Day and Sports/Comic Relief.

Facilities Miltoncross Academy was opened in 2000 as part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI). The contract requires that the school is kept at a high standard of repair. Parents rate the school facilities highly. The school is fully accessible to all learners. It has a passenger lift, wide access doors and a physiotherapy room.

“ The school offers many extra-curricular activities appreciated by students. Students are engaged in charitable, creative, sporting and other activities which develop their understanding of spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues.” OFSTED

A wealth of Enriching Opportunities 7

A firm foundation for the future Everything we do at Miltoncross Academy is to ensure that our students have the best possible foundations and preparation for moving onto Sixth Form College and then to further study (university, college, apprenticeships).

We are all dedicated to ensuring that when students leave us they are resilient lifelong learners who have the skills to adapt and change with the ever changing workplace. Miltoncross Academy Staff are dedicated professionals who do whatever needs to be done to ensure student progress.

“ I'd like to say a huge thank you to Miltoncross for the attention, time and commitment the Year 11 teachers and staff have shown. I am really impressed with the extra time and effort that was put in for weekend revision, before and afterschool sessions and could not have asked for more help for my child. You have exceeded my expectations in guiding the Year 11s through a pretty tough period in their lives. Year 11 Parent
