Vision and Excellence
Welcome THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS PROSPECTUS. Our vision at Harris Academy Peckham is to ensure every child achieves excellence in all aspects of academy life. We have high aspirations, both in terms of academic standards and personal development, in order to prepare your child for the demands of the 21st century global workplace. We expect every child to excel, and will provide the necessary challenge and support to make this happen. In line with all Harris Academies, we ensure that we prepare engaging and innovative learning experiences for our students, within a disciplined context where good manners, smart uniform and mature conduct are expected from all. Our provision is from Year 7 to Year 13, with an expectation that all of our students remain with us for Sixth Form programmes of study. This prospectus will only offer a brief snapshot of what our Academy can offer your child. We would like to show you the wealth of learning opportunities we have for your child, so please do come to one of our Open Events so you can experience firsthand what life is like at Harris Academy Peckham. I very much look forward to meeting you and your son or daughter.
On behalf of the Governors I look forward to welcoming you to our Academy. A Place of Learning and Success Our students follow a tailor-made mix of courses in addition to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. By assessing students regularly, we develop individualised pathways that ensure they each receive all the support and challenge they require to give them the best options for post-16 study, the world of work and beyond. Students choose their options at the end of Year 8 from a wide range of choices. All students will study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science and PE, in addition to studying 3 option subjects. We offer a whole range of GCSE courses and a number of vocational qualifications. We provide specialist support in Literacy and Numeracy for those students who require it and we have an extensive programme to challenge our more able students. Our young people learn in small groups of no more than 25 students of similar ability. Our dedicated staff care deeply about students’ progress and wellbeing, often providing help outside of the academy day. Rigorous and regular assessment allows all students to understand what they have to do to improve their grades and develop their skills for wider learning opportunities. Setting of personalised targets for each student is the foundation for the academy’s successful, tailor-made approach to learning.

A Chance to Shine Everyone at the Harris Academy Peckham is given the chance to find out what they are good at. We have a large and diverse range of enrichment and extension activities. Students can, for example, learn a language, play the drums or make art and crafts. Some choose to be part of our Student Voice group to get involved in the way the academy is run. Others prefer to train in one of the range of sports we offer – such as basketball, netball, rugby, boxing and many more. Our facilities include a fantastic Learning Resource Centre, dance and drama studios, a sports hall and an astroturf pitch. We want everyone to discover their talent by giving everybody equal opportunity to shine, regardless of their cultural background, religious beliefs or ability.

Teamwork We’re proud to be part of the vibrant local community of Peckham. We are delighted to share some of our facilities with the community and invite them to join us for workshops and events. Many students also take part in fundraising and community service activities. We have a firm but fair standard of discipline here. We ask for high standards of courtesy. In return we provide a place where students can feel safe, valued and confident to learn. The partnership between home and academy is the key to our success. It is only with the help of parents and carers that we can create a secure and effective learning environment, in which students can develop their talents, aim high and believe they can achieve their ambitions.

Harris Federation Our academy is run by the Harris Federation, a not-for-profit charity with nearly thirty years’ experience of running happy and successful primary and secondary schools in and around London. The Harris Federation has an exceptional track record with academic progress far greater than the national average. Every Harris academy so far inspected by Ofsted is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with the majority rated ‘outstanding’. The founder and Chairman of the Harris Federation is Lord Harris of Peckham. His vision of delivering happy and successful education is brought to life by an excellent team of teachers and leaders. As well as joint working between the teachers at our academies, there are many shared experiences for our students. These include federation-wide sports days at the National Sports Centre; Harris Experience, a unique programme that readies our most able students for life at top universities; and inter-academy events such as one-to-one reading partnerships between our primary and secondary schools, World Maths Day and Debate Mate. You can follow the Harris Federation on Twitter: @harrisfed.

Each year for Sports Day, the Harris Federation hires out the Crystal Palace Sports Stadium. With well over 10,000 student and staff spectators in attendance, Academies compete in team and individual sports. The sound of students cheering each other on is so loud that Team GB athlete Louise Jukes who happened to be nearby tweeted: “Can hear hundreds of kids screaming from the stadium at Crystal Palace! What a great noise! Kids loving sports day! Wish I was a kid again!”
From the Chief Executive The Harris Federation is a London charity with nearly thirty years’ experience in education. Our Academies combine the traditional values of good manners, strong discipline and smart uniform with the best of modern teaching and technology. Harris Academy Peckham has established itself as a highly enterprising and very successful member of our group. Working closely together in and around London, our Academies are able to offer a far broader range of opportunities, far better training and professional development for staff and real success for our students. What makes this Academy so successful? Students who enjoy learning and look forward to coming to school each day; teachers and support staff who are genuinely ambitious for every student; a senior leadership team that consistently sets standards of excellence.
From the Sponsor As an employer and a father I strongly believe that a good education is the best start in life that you can give a child. Harris Academy Peckham promotes hard work, curiosity of mind, integrity and ambition. It works tirelessly, in partnership with the other Harris Academies, to ensure the greatest success for every child, regardless of their ability or aptitude. I hope you will come along to our various Open Day or Evening Events to see for yourself the difference the Academy is making. Lord Harris of Peckham
