An exceptional education for local children
Your child’s education We believe that every child is unique and deserves the opportunity to feel valued and be successful and that children learn best when they feel happy and safe. Our Academy opened in September 2015 in order to provide additional, high quality primary places for local families.
Welcome to Harris Primary Academy Beckenham. We are very lucky to have a purpose built academy, which is a modern and welcoming place for children to be. We are part of a Federation of academies with an established track record in Bromley and across London. Our ethos at HPABE is that all children can achieve and be successful and it is our job, as educators, to do whatever it takes to enable this to happen. As children begin their education, we want to make their first school years as enjoyable as possible and develop in them a real enthusiasm for learning. We will lay the foundations for a successful academic career, which means developing the core skills of reading, writing and maths from day one. We work closely with our parents to establish a strong and committed parent body with whom we can work in partnership to help our academy flourish. Please do come along to our open days – dates can be found on our website – so you can see for yourselves what we have to offer. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you. Mrs B Rigby-Drake, Head of Academy

Happy in the classroom Especially at such a young age, it is important children are taught and looked after in the right way for them. Our staff support each child so that they can all make excellent progress. This section of our prospectus describes what education here is like.

Every lesson is creative The aim of our teachers is always to deliver lessons that children enjoy and feel motivated by. We believe that all lessons should be creative, not just arts subjects. We want all of our pupils to be confident readers, writers and mathematicians. Our teachers make sure these areas as well as the rest of the National Curriculum are taught in ways that engage the natural sense of curiosity that children have. The result of this is that children become eager, confident pupils who understand the joy of learning and are prepared well for academic success.
High standards in every classroom With each week, term and year being so significant in a child’s life, consistency is particularly important in their primary education. As part of the Harris Federation, which has its own training school for teachers, our staff receive outstanding professional development to make sure that standards are consistently high in every classroom.

Children treated as individuals We want children to retain their individuality and be treated the right way for them. We step in quickly if a change is needed. For some children, this might involve one-to-one support if they are finding something difficult and for others it could mean stretching them more to keep them interested. As an Academy parent, you would be welcome to discuss your son or daughter with us at any time. We also send reports home each term, with a full written report at the end of the year, so you are kept up-to-date about your child’s learning and progress. We welcome children of all abilities and want them to enjoy school and thrive. For children with special needs, one of our first steps is to work with their parents and other specialists to create a plan for supporting them. Our approach as a whole is reviewed with children’s classroom teachers, relevant specialists and parents every half term.
Our Literacy specialism We chose Literacy as our specialism because we believe that learning to read, write and communicate effectively underpins all learning. Reading is taught through traditional phonics and children are encouraged to read for pleasure and take books home.
An academic head start As children progress through the school, one of our aims will be to make sure we give them a ‘head start’ for the rest of their education. Throughout school, children will begin to be taught by specialist subject teachers, just like in secondary school. Our building is on the same site as Harris Academy Beckenham. As children progress through their primary education, they will be taken to the secondary academy to use the specialist facilities such as science laboratories. As well as engaging them in the excitement of the subject at hand, these experiences help prepare children for a successful transition to secondary school.

Happy outside the classroom There is always time at the Academy for children to think, to play, to discover and wonder. This section of our prospectus describes our approach to helping pupils to become well-rounded, resilient and confident. Hobbies, skills and experiences Our teachers and other staff will seek to discover and nurture at least one special talent within each child. This will allow your child to thrive and shine. Our children experience learning opportunities linked to topics taught through trips and outings to various settings in London and the local area. At times this may include visits from external specialists and taking part in activities at other Harris Academies.
Every pupil has a friend
Healthy and tasty meals
We want the Academy to feel friendly and welcoming and we always make sure that every pupil has at least one friend. Our children are taught to respect each other and their teachers.
Our school lunches and other snacks and meals are healthy as well as tasty. School lunches are provided free of charge for every child in Key Stage 1 but pupils may bring in packed lunches if they prefer.
There is a zero tolerance approach to any type of bullying and unacceptable behaviour.
Wrap-around care
Traditional standards of behaviour
We provide a Breakfast Club and After School Club for all children whose parents require these. The clubs are well organised and fun.
Our Academy is relaxed and comfortable but pupils know that good behaviour is expected of them. They are frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and well-behaved.

A Federation of Free Schools and Academies Our academy is run by the Harris Federation, a notfor-profit charity with nearly 30 years’ experience of running happy and successful primary and secondary schools in and around London. The Harris Federation has an exceptional track record with academic progress far greater than the national average. Every Harris academy so far inspected by Ofsted is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, with the majority rated ‘outstanding’. The founder and Chairman of the Harris Federation is Lord Harris of Peckham. His vision of delivering happy and successful education is brought to life by an excellent team of teachers and leaders. As well as joint working between the teachers at our academies, there are many shared experiences for our students. These include federation-wide sports days at the National Sports Centre; Harris Experience, a unique programme that readies our most able students for life at top universities; and inter-academy events such as one-to-one reading partnerships between our primary and secondary schools, World Maths Day and Debate Mate. You can follow the Harris Federation on Twitter: @HarrisFed.

Admissions We have 60 places available in Reception. The dates for our Open Days are on our website. Please do take the time to come and meet us. If there are more than 60 applications, Looked After and Former Looked After Children will be admitted first, followed by children with a statement of Special Educational Need that names the Academy. Children with a sibling at the Academy will be prioritised next. After that, and in order to make sure we prioritise children who live in places where it is difficult to get into their first choice school, we will admit children according to how close they live to one of a series of ‘nodal points’. Further information and a copy of our admissions policy can be found on the admissions section of our website.
Our academy is a bright, modern and welcoming place for children to be, with plenty of facilities for learning and play.
