At BMAT STEM Academy we want to recruit the future of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We work alongside some major business sponsors within Harlow that are wanting to provide and change the social mobility of young people in our community and offer them lifelong employment. As a new school into the Burnt Mill Academy Trust we are committed to smashing down barriers to success and to ensuring that only outstanding teachers are in our classrooms. The ethos of the school is to create a mature and business like environment. Students are expected to act and behave like they would in the world of work, in return we have a mature approach to learners and develop the softer skills alongside the academic vigour to be the best in their field. SPONSORSHIP PLEDGE The industrial sponsors of BMAT STEM Academy (GlaxoSmithKline, Princess Alexandra NHS Trust and Pearson) are actively involved in the running of the Academy. • They sit on the Local Advisory Board, which holds the Senior Leadership Team to account for the progress and attainment of students • They undertake monitoring visits, where they observe lessons to ensure quality of teaching • They deliver curriculum enrichment activities so students can see how what they learn in the classroom relates to what scientists and engineers do in industry and the NHS • They provide work experience opportunities • They also deliver careers talks and interview skills workshops to students, so students get the very best chance to excel in their future careers.
Abbie Williams, BMAT STEM Ambassador “I am currently completing a Biology degree apprenticeship at GlaxoSmithKline in Ware. I went to a BMAT school, and after becoming involved in BMAT STEM Academy as an ambassador I would have loved the opportunity to have BMAT teachers alongside this very exciting curriculum.”

BESPOKE STEM Curriculum GCSE Engineering The sky’s the limit. Engineering is an increasingly innovative and exciting area to work in. It affects every aspect of modern life – from skyscrapers to smart phones, cars to carrier bags. The GCSE introduces students to a host of new technologies, helping them to gain practical skills and understanding to inspire a lifelong interest in engineering. It will particularly appeal to those who enjoy being creative, with an affinity for drawing, design, maths and problem-solving. You will have the opportunity to work with Computer Aided Design and manufacturing software and hardware including 3D printers and scanners, CNC milling machines and lathes and laser cutters. You will work with a range of materials including metals, woods, plastics and smart materials.

ASSESSMENT
NEXT STEPS
You will be assessed on your knowledge of engineering practice and theory. This will account for 60% of your grade. The remaining 40% of your mark will come from an extended project brief where you design, prototype and manufacture your own design to a set question from the exam board.
You can continue your studies onto A-Level Design and Engineering courses at sixth form or College, or take up an apprenticeship.

ASSESSMENT GCSE Computer Science is now assessed through two written examinations. Each exam is worth 50%. Students will undertake a Programming Project in their final year which supports the development of understanding across the whole specification.
NEXT STEPS AS/A Level Computer Science; Cambridge Technical Award in Digital Media; Cambridge Technical Award in IT or Level 2/L3 apprenticeship.
GCSE
Computer Science GCSE Computer Science is engaging and practical, encouraging creativity and problem solving. It encourages students to develop their understanding and application of the core concepts in computer science. Students also analyse problems in computational terms and devise creative solutions by designing, writing, testing and evaluating programs. They will have the opportunity to define success criteria from a given problem, and then create suitable algorithms to achieve the success criteria. Students then code their solutions in a suitable programming language, and check its functionality using a suitable and documented test plan. Finally they will evaluate the success of their solution and reflect on potential developments for the future.
FUTURE PROSPECTS • Software Engineering • Electronics Engineering • Games Designer

ASSESSMENT You will be assessed with two papers, one on astronomy with the naked eye, and one on astronomy through telescopes. These examinations are equally weighted.
NEXT STEPS Prepares you as a learner for AS/A Level Physics to study Astronomy at University or a Higher level apprenticeship.
GCSE Astronomy Most people are fascinated by the night sky and are interested in stories about our continuing exploration of our Solar System and Universe. This course has been developed to build on that interest and to give an introduction to the subject of astronomy. The course will enable you to understand our position in the Universe, the movements of planets and stars, the cycles in the night and daytime sky, and the way in which we use technology to observe and interact with space. Students will follow an incredible story of how scientists, from ancient civilisations to the modern day, have used their imagination and carefully recorded visual measurement to explore the Universe in which we live. This course will also support your other sciences, deepening your knowledge and understanding of the universe.

GCSE Statistics The GCSE Statistics qualification incorporates numerous examples of real-life data and contexts, which build skills that students will use in other subjects, such as science and astronomy. Based on the principles of the statistical enquiry cycle, students gain a rounded understanding of how to interpret and apply data to a number of scenarios, both across subjects and in the real world. Students will find our assessments relevant and easy to read. Ramping of questions in both tiers and carefully constructed mark schemes will encourage them to achieve their full potential. Clear questions and presentation of statistical information helps ensure students understand the requirements within each paper. Real-life statistical data and contexts allow students to really engage with the content. Both papers are carefully ramped in demand across both tiers, ensuring weaker students can access some content and stronger students are sufficiently challenged.
FUTURE PROSPECTS • Research Development • Statistician • Research Analyst
COMPANIES YOU WILL WORK WITH • • • • •
Raytheon LOXON GSK Princess Alexandra Hospital Anglia Ruskin University
ASSESSMENT NEXT STEPS The examination is split into two evenly weighted papers that focus on the same content and skills. This gives students and teachers an opportunity after the first paper to reflect on the areas they need to work on in order to strengthen performance in the second paper.
GCSE Statistics will be a great foundation to all research project based learning and analytical careers. This is paramount in the world of STEM.

GCSE 3D Design Everything we use has to be designed, prototyped and built, be it a product, a mobile phone, a car or the room you are sat reading this prospectus in. Companies are increasingly looking for employees to have design and presentation skills and this course allows you to develop your skills, along with a portfolio of work that you can take to future employers. You will have the opportunity to work with Computer Aided Design and manufacturing software and hardware including 3D printers and scanners, CNC milling machines and lathes and laser cutters.

ASSESSMENT There are two components in the GCSE ThreeDimensional Design qualification. 60% of your marks come from a portfolio of designs. You can choose to include work on Architectural Design, Product Design, Exhibition and Smart Interior Design. 40% of your marks will come from an externally set task which is made up of a preparatory period, followed by a 10 hour supervision period. During this time you will design and make a solution to a given problem. There is no written exam for this qualification as work is created as part of a portfolio.
NEXT STEPS You can continue your studies onto A-Level Design and Engineering courses at sixth form or College, or take up an apprenticeship.
