Your child’s education Our Academy opened in September 2016 in order to provide high-quality primary places for local families. We believe that every child is unique and deserves the opportunity to feel valued and be successful. Welcome to Harris Primary Academy Purley Way. Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus and for considering our academy for your child’s education. We know that children learn best when they feel happy and safe. We are very lucky to have a purpose-built academy, which is a modern and welcoming place for children to be.
As a result of the expert teaching and support on offer, in 2019, three years after opening, we were judged to be an Outstanding academy by Ofsted across all categories. Our academy is part of the Harris Federation, a family of 50 successful academies in and around London and our pupils benefit greatly from being part of this thriving community of schools.
Our whole school community strives for our academy to be the best it can possibly be, which is encapsulated by our motto ‘Excellence for All’. There are three words which underpin everything we do: positivity, ambition and growth. All our staff and governors share this vision and work together to make sure it becomes a reality.

High aspirations We have high aspirations for all our pupils and our staff support our children to be the best that they can be. This section of our prospectus describes what education here is like.

Successful learners Our rich curriculum has been designed to provide all children with the opportunity to succeed and flourish. We want all our pupils to become confident readers, writers and mathematicians. To do this, we ensure that all skills from the National Curriculum are interwoven throughout all our teaching. Your child will be supported to achieve in all areas at HPAPW. Our staff are highly skilled at adapting learning to meet the children’s needs, supporting them if they need additional assistance or stretching them more to keep them engaged and further their understanding. Through this approach all children are motivated and eager to learn.
High standards in every classroom We firmly believe that every moment in school counts. Your child will experience consistent high standards and expectations throughout their time at our academy. Our teaching and support staff have access to the highest quality training programmes to provide the most innovative learning opportunities for every student. As part of the Harris Federation, which has its own training school for teachers, our staff receive excellent professional development to make sure that standards are always high. We are located near a number of Ofsted rated Outstanding Harris secondary academies. We have close links with Harris Academy Purley and use their facilities and specialist subject teachers to complement our curriculum. As well as engaging them in the excitement of the subject at hand, these experiences help prepare pupils for a successful transition to secondary school.

A love of reading We encourage our pupils to read widely and to establish a genuine love of reading. Reading is taught through phonics lessons, the development of comprehension skills and through 1:1 sessions. As a result, our academy has received outstanding outcomes for reading and writing which are well above the national average. Children will bring books home from the day they start at the academy and we ask that parents read with their child every day. Home reading is recorded on our pupils’ ‘Read the Rainbow’ bookmarks and we award certificates and prizes when these are completed.
Children treated as individuals We want children to retain their individuality and to grow in selfconfidence. Your child will be taught by a team of expert staff who care for them so they can develop their full potential. We are an inclusive academy and welcome children of all abilities. We want every pupil at our academy to enjoy school and thrive. For children with special educational needs, we will work closely with their parents and carers and other specialists to create a plan for supporting them.
Our approach is reviewed with children’s classroom teachers, relevant specialists and their families every term.
Parent and carer partnership We recognise that good communication with families is vital and have a transparent approach when speaking to parents. You are welcome to discuss your child’s progress with us at any time and we actively encourage our parents and carers to be partners in their child’s learning. On top of sending reports home every term and holding parent/ teacher meetings, we also have a regular newsletter that will keep you up to date on everything happening at the academy, important diary dates and reminders, and details of new initiatives within the wider Federation. We use an app for you to access all crucial information such as announcements, letters, your child’s attendance and their reports. Our website and Twitter page (@HPAPW16) are regularly updated so that you can see all the fantastic work the children have been producing. We also hold regular parent workshops and ‘book looks’.

Happy outside the classroom There is always time at the academy for children to play, to think and to discover and wonder. This section of our prospectus describes our approach to helping our pupils become well-rounded, resilient and confident individuals. Hobbies, skills and experiences Our teachers and academy staff seek to inspire a range of interests and talents for each individual child. There is something for everyone in our extracurricular programme which is packed full of music, dance, drama and sport. We feel passionate that all children have lots of wonderful experiences outside the classroom to enhance their learning. We offer a varied and exciting calendar of visits, trips and experiences to historical sites, places of worship, museums and theatres. Each year we welcome a number of special guests from our community to our academy, including firefighters, chefs, paramedics and entrepreneurs, so that our children learn about different careers and the wider world around them.
During their time at HPAPW, all children will have the opportunity to participate in competitive sport, take part in a community project, meet an athlete and author and to perform on stage. Our students also enjoy their time in our academy garden patch where they learn to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers. We are very proud that this space has been recognised with awards from the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.
Community Champions We want our pupils to become outstanding members of their communities. Each month we choose a ‘community champion’ theme and our pupils complete a series of challenges and activities connected to this.
Recent themes have included diversity, human rights, the environment and active living. We work closely with parents, carers and our local community who support and join us in our academy challenges.
Every pupil has a friend We want our academy to feel friendly and welcoming and we always make sure that pupils feel happy and included. Our children are taught to respect themselves, each other and the adults in their academy. Our academy is an environment where children are genuinely kind to each other and friendly to new pupils, caring about those around them.

Healthy and tasty meals Our hot school lunches are popular, healthy and tasty, although a small number of pupils choose to bring packed lunches instead. Special dietary requirements are catered for. Our academy has a Breakfast Club and after-school care available for all children whose parents or carers require these. These clubs are run by our staff, so they know the children really well. Sessions are well-organised, fun and support parents by ensuring the children read every night and complete their weekly homework.
Traditional standards of behaviour Our academy is calm and happy with high expectations. Pupils know that good behaviour is expected of them. They are frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and wellbehaved. There is a zero-tolerance approach to any type of bullying.

A Federation of academies
Admissions
The Harris Federation is an education charity led and run by teachers. The founder, Chairman and sponsor of the Harris Federation, Lord Harris of Peckham, opened our first school in 1990. There are now 50 Harris primary and secondary academies in London and Essex, as well as a Teaching School Alliance that trains thousands of teachers every year.
If we are oversubscribed, children with an Educational Health Care Plan that names the academy will be given places first, followed by Looked After and former Looked After Children and children with an exceptional medical or social need for the place at the academy specifically.
Each academy has its own unique identity and is led by its Principal or Head of Academy and senior team. We are deliberately a federation rather than a chain. What unites us is a culture that ensures the children and teenagers in our schools get an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment. Our academies are oversubscribed by a ratio of around four applications for every place available and the vast majority are judged to be Outstanding by Ofsted.
