WHY CHOOSE W6?

AT W6 WE WILL UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL AND HELP YOU TO SHAPE A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE.

We are a high-achieving and academic sixth form that supports students’ entry into top universities, apprenticeships, and careers. We have developed a carefully considered 7-year learning journey from year 7 to 13 that will prepare students well for whatever ambitious goals they have. Having small classes ensures that teachers know our students well as individuals, meaning that lessons are more bespoke than at larger colleges. Your relationship with teachers changes in this setting, as you become partners towards helping you achieve academic excellence.

A sixth form attached to a school also has excellent benefits that are worth considering. There is the chance to carry out paid tutoring for younger students and opportunities to volunteer to mentor younger students in different elements of school life. There is also a huge range of trips that are designed to broaden your horizons. We also have excellent facilities in creative subjects and many opportunities which include regular live performances, and a number of different sporting opportunities.

MESSAGE FROM

PRINCIPAL SC ANLON

W6 IS A BESPOKE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE THAT IS TAILORED TOWARDS AMBITIOUS STUDENTS.

Typically graduates go on to some of the best universities in the country and everything we do at W6 is about preparing students for that experience. Students leave W6 not only with excellent results but they will also have had a rich cultural experience to ensure they are building the cultural capital that will make them successful at university and beyond. Careers advice is another feature of W6, alongside regular one-toone meetings with our careers leaders, students benefit from work experience and regular contact with both local and national companies.

We are keen to expose our students to the wider world and I’m delighted to say that in recent years our students have benefited from some truly inspirational experiences such as partaking in the Model UN in New York, history department visits to Berlin, not to mention skiing in the Alps. Our enriching programme builds close bonds amongst W6 students and this is where friendships are made that will last a lifetime. We have a growing alumni who are really generous with their time and passionate about supporting our students. W6 is an experience that will give you everything you need to be successful in life.

W6 TEAM YOUR

THE SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE YOU RECEIVE WILL BE SECOND TO NONE.

There is a strong team behind you in W6 that will challenge and support you on your journey to become the most successful, happiest and inquisitive version of yourself. We have a shared philosophy in sixth form, which focuses on aiming high and working hard but also having fun whilst doing so.

We will support your applications to top universities and apprenticeships be they at home or abroad. We will work hard to remove any financial barriers to your education that you struggle with and we will ensure that opportunities are provided for you to socialise and experience the world.

You also have a dedicated tutor, who will meet you fortnightly to support you with your lessons, your organisation and your goals for the future.

We are proud of the culture we have developed here at W6 and are confident that our bespoke and personal approach will help you to access the increasingly competitive post-18 destinations. We have had great success with students getting into top universities - including several to Oxford - and large numbers of students applying to courses that help them travel the world.

SUBJECTS CHOOSING YOUR

“I love being at W6 because of the interactions with teachers on a personal level.”

CHOOSING THE CORRECT COMBINATION OF SUBJECTS IS CRUCIAL TO BOTH SUCCEEDING AND ENJOYING YOUR KS5 EXPERIENCE.

There are many misconceptions about suitable subject choices and combinations, alongside an almost overwhelming choice of options. At W6 we offer 20+ challenging level three courses from a range of disciplines, all of which can support you into entry onto a high-level pathway.

The minimum number of subjects that you should choose is three, but for those students with excellent GCSE results and a strong work ethic, four choices may be a good way to challenge yourself further.

We also offer an ambitious opportunity to complete an Extended Project Qualification.

This bonus half an A Level is a great way of exploring your intellectual creativity, as you get to choose your own topic to explore and produce a degree-level piece of work that gives you reduced entry requirements at many universities. Students have completed many different studies over the years, including an investigation into the impact on the audience of a song played in different styles; the lyricism of Taylor Swift; the effects of ionising radiation on travel to Mars and the role of genetics in achievement in sport.

AT W6 THE CULTURE

WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO WORK HARD, HAVE FUN, AND EXPERIENCE THE WORLD WHILST STUDYING AT W6.

Lessons are different from KS4, as you are treated as young, inquisitive adults in smaller classes, with the expectation to discuss and debate issues with your teachers.

40% of your timetable is non-contact time where you do not need to be in college, although it is recommended that you are. There are regular half-termly socials, including bowling; escape rooms; and military-style team-building activities amongst others. The highlight of our cultural offering is the annual New York Model UN trip in March.

This involves some development of your soft skills and knowledge of international politics, followed by everything you could hope for in a trip to New York.

Departments also have their own specific curriculum trips. Geography has a once-in-alifetime trip to Iceland, History has an annual trip to Berlin, Performing Arts does its now famous annual tour of Europe, English Lit has contacts with the Guardian Newspaper and Maths has a range of trips to London and Bletchley Park. These are just a few of the many opportunities that we offer to help you enjoy college whilst learning valuable skills and achieving top qualifications.

“The New York trip blew my mind, and I particularly enjoyed the Model UN element. I made international friends for life.”
