Our equipment was procured after careful liaison with local employers to ensure that students are ‘workready’ when they leave us.

A typical day at UTCN “ I leave my house at 7:20am and get dropped off at Acle where I catch my bus. I get on the bus at 7:45am and begin my journey to school. At around 8:15 I arrive into the city where I move onto the contract bus which takes me to UTCN. I arrive at school at 8:40am and begin my lesson shortly after 9:00am. From here I will have a series of 50 minute periods jam packed with new information. These days are extremely varied. One moment I will be doing science in one of our many labs and the next I will be plasma cutting or welding in the workshop. Then, at either 15:05 or 15:35 (depending on the day), I will leave school and get on the UTCN contract bus to the city centre. This usually concludes my school day. However, we often have the option for after school study with the support of our teachers. This is especially helpful nearing exams.” Lex Lawes, Current student

Friends If you’re reading this, it means that you may be thinking about changing schools mid-way through your secondary years. We know that, at first, this can be a little daunting. However, this is an exciting time! You have the chance to make lots of new friends as well as keep in touch with your current ones. • Everybody is new! Core Curriculum Examining Body: AQA

GCSE English Language & GCSE English Literature Content Summary You will work towards two GCSEs in your English course: GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. We follow the AQA syllabus for both courses. You will study both fiction and non-fiction from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and you will read a variety of texts including Shakespeare, a modern play, a nineteenth century novel and poetry.

What can I expect in lessons? You will learn how to write fiction and non-fiction precisely, accurately and effectively and will develop your reading skills. The spoken language element of the course will help you to develop your formal presentation skills. Your teachers will have high expectations for your attitude for learning and commitment to the subject. In turn, they will show commitment to helping you make progress.

Core Curriculum Examining Body: Edexcel

GCSE Mathematics Content Summary Students follow the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Mathematics course. This is assessed through three equally-weighted, written examination papers at either Foundation tier or Higher tier. Paper 1 is the only non-calculator paper. Each of the three examination papers at both tiers will be out of 80 marks with a duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. Questions are targeted at grades 5–1 at Foundation tier and at grades 9–4 at Higher tier.

GCSE Combined Science Double Award

Content Summary You will work towards two GCSEs in your science course, following the AQA Trilogy syllabus. Throughout the course you will be learning the core aspects of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Biology is the study of living organisms; their physiology, life-cycles and adaptations. You will be introduced to topics including cardiovascular disease, human digestion, human evolution, inheritance, infectious disease, ecology and many others relevant to you. Chemistry is based upon the combinations and reactions of the 100 different elements that make up the world around us. Physics investigates how things work and how the universe can be explained using laws and theory from great minds such as Newton and Einstein. Assessment will be comprised of six exams with 1 hour and 15-minute duration each.

What can I expect in lessons? Science lessons are varied, you can be learning detailed theories of how chemicals come together and react, and then investigating for yourself in practicals. We have strong links with Engineering and Mathematics. Schemes of work are tailored to ensure you make excellent progress across these subjects.

Vocational Award In Engineering Content Summary This qualification enables students in Year 10 to take their first steps into the world of engineering. The course provides an exciting and dynamic mix of theoretical and practical study designed to give students access to the progression pathways into further engineering studies at post 16. Teaching on this course is designed to open students’ eyes to the huge range of fulfilling careers available in engineering and manufacturing industries, as well as introduce some of the essential skills that underpin them.

What can I expect in lessons? In the classroom lessons, you will use the excellently equipped UTCN workshops to develop your practical skills. You will explore a vast range of processes and operations engineers use to create the world around us. Core Curriculum

Core PE Core PE is studied by all students as part of their curriculum. This ensures that all students develop their personal health and fitness. Due to the limited on-site facilities at UTCN, most of these activities are run off-site at specialist providers, such as the UEA Sports Park. Typically, students spend one afternoon per week on PE. The programme of study includes a wide range of physical activities including football, badminton, basketball, netball, table tennis and dance in the winter months, and athletics, rounders and cricket in the summer months.

PSHE All students participate in the UTCN PSHE programme. The UTCN PSHE programme includes statutory RSE and employer engagement activities. The curriculum is designed to support students in their transition to UTCN in year 10, and their understanding of and application to high-quality destinations in years 11 and 13.

Content Summary

You will work towards three GCSEs in your science course, following the AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics syllabi.

Designed for those students looking for a practical engineering experience, this course will allow learners to practise and develop a wide range of essential workshop skills.

By choosing this option you will study the three separate disciplines of science with dedicated lessons in each. This will replace Double Science from the core subjects list. Taking three separate sciences allows you to delve deeper into the fascinating topics within each subject. Additionally, you will gain a distinct advantage when wanting to study science beyond GCSE along with a solid foundation for many science-related and unrelated careers.

This course is a fantastic foundation for students moving onto a post 16 vocational qualification or apprenticeship in a workshop based environment. Here are just some of the skills you will have a chance to develop during this course: • MIG Welding • Manual Milling • Manual Turning

What can I expect in lessons?

Triple award science lessons are varied, you will be learning theories of how the universe around you works and then trying them for yourself in practicals.

What can I expect in lessons?

You will learn the skills needed to interact with the biological, molecular and physical world including, but not limited to, measuring mass, speeds, concentrations, volumes, and temperatures. Studying three sciences is very demanding and require hard work both inside and outside the classroom, but it is extremely rewarding.

You will receive constant support from the engineering teaching staff and technicians in our fully equipped workshops, getting hands on engineering experience in order to develop the skills above. We also use cutting edge technology to allow students to develop their skills, one example is our use of a virtual welding system designed to get you up to a set standard before trying out the real thing.

Content Summary

GCSE Art at UTCN offers you the opportunity to use your imagination and to be creative in a variety of visual areas. Art GCSE offers you a suitable foundation from which you can move on to further and higher education.

This course is equivalent to one GCSE. It is excellent preparation to study T Level Science in the Sixth Form. You will develop learning and practical skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations, and you will learn to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically. You will gain skills extremely relevant to the health and applied science sectors and increase your employability through increased independence and confidence.

The delivery of Art has been carefully planned to include a wide range of skills and techniques including drawing, painting, collage, mixed-media, photography, print-making, model-making, and contextual studies. Drawing from observation is an important element of the course and will help to develop your spatial awareness, visual perception and judgement.

GCSE Business is split into two themes:

Theme 1 concentrates on key business concepts, issues and skills involved in starting and running a small business. It provides a framework for students to explore core concepts through the lens of an entrepreneur setting up a business.

Theme 2 examines how a business develops beyond the start up-phase. It focuses on the key business concepts, issues and decisions used to grow a business.

What can I expect in lessons? Lessons will be business led. Each topic will include real business examples from small start-up businesses to multinational companies. Students will learn a wide range of business knowledge, from starting their own business to developing marketing strategies and understanding financial accounts. You will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of different types of businesses from manufacturing, retail and technological industries. Lessons regularly include videos, documentaries, group work and the opportunity to research businesses that interests you.

• Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming • Programming Project This subject gives pupils a real, in-depth understanding of the functionality of computer technology and provides a general grounding in computing, the principles of programming and problem-solving. Computer Science is a practical subject where students can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. Our Computer Science qualification will develop your computational thinking, helping students to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence. It will also be invaluable preparation for students who want to go on to study Computer Science at a higher level and will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills.

History is both an interesting and relevant subject to study. You may well ask ‘What use is History to me? Why do I need to know what happened in the past?’

The Certificate in Financial Education (CEFE) is a GCSE equivalent for learners who want to find out more about the financial services sector. It is a vocational qualification for learners who wish to learn more about financial services, financial products and their application, and finance in business. The qualification provides an enriching and detailed introduction to the world of finance, relating to reallife application while ensuring learning is assessed in a practical and applied manner. Topics are clearly and logically structured and include:

But History is much more than just what happened, it teaches a range of valuable, transferable skills. Such skills are highly regarded by employers since they show that you can retain, analyse and present information effectively. In short, it shows a trained mind. Arkwright Engineering Scholarships Programme

This qualification is for learners who are looking to develop a significant core of knowledge and understanding in health and fitness.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme identifies, inspires and nurtures future leaders in Engineering, Computing and Technical Design.

It encourages the learner to use knowledge and practical tools to focus on supporting people with specific health and fitness goals.

There is a rigorous selection process for Arkwright Engineering Scholarships for high calibre students who apply in year 11 and meet the scholarship criteria. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support students through A Levels and encourage students to pursue Engineering, Computing or Technical Design at University or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to pursue careers in the field.

The study of health and fitness involves understanding the functions of the body systems, understanding of the principles of training, knowing how the body reacts in the short-and long-term to fitness activities, how to create and apply lifestyle analysis tools and how to create a fitness programme for a person with specific goals. It is assessed over two units. Unit 1 is an external written exam which is worth 40% of the final grade, and Unit 2 is a synoptic project which is 60% of the final grade. The content of this course will be delivered in both practical and theory lessons.

Curriculum enrichment Duke of Edinburgh Award UTCN offers students in Year 10 the opportunity to undertake the Silver Award which consists of the following sections: • Volunteering – to encourage service to individuals and to the community • Expedition – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery • Skills – to encourage the development of personal interests, hobbies and social and practical skills • Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity Expeditions are organised by UTCN each year and students attend regular training sessions at school in order to complete the Expedition Section. The remaining sections are completed by students in their own time. UTCN staff support students as they progress through the award, however a large amount of responsibility lies with the student. It is not necessary to have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme previously as students can begin the Silver Award level as a direct entrant. The Silver Award can be completed in as little as 12 months. After completion of the Silver Award level, students are able to progress to the Gold Award level and will continue to receive support from UTCN with its completion.

Year 10 uniform Our Uniform Supplier is Birds of Dereham, the UTCN uniform is designed to be smart and cost effective. Further clarification on our uniform can be found in the uniform policy on our website. UTCN insists on high standards of personal presentation. Our Uniform and Appearance policy has been developed with our governing body of employers to prepare students for the world of work. All prospective students and their parents should ensure that they are able to adhere to the UTCN Uniform and Appearance Policy as it is strictly enforced. Items marked Birds can only be purchased here from our uniform supplier Birds of Dereham.
