OUR School We are proud of our inclusive, diverse community. Over 30 different languages are spoken here and we celebrate and learn from many different cultures. Pupils who arrive from overseas are given every support. In addition to a welcome pack, we have bi-lingual assistants and teachers who speak a range of different languages including Nigerian, Nepalese and Arabic. We celebrate our diversity in many ways including through food, dance and music of other cultures. Every year we hold a range of community events, including a well-attended International Evening. Our links with the wider community are very strong. We run language classes, a number of life skills courses and encourage parents to come to our regular Play and Stay sessions. Community cohesion was judged as outstanding at our last inspection. At Bannockburn all our children thrive thanks to our committed staff, excellent leadership at all levels and a very strong and supportive governing body.
“Community cohesion is excellent because the school works very effectively with parents and partners in the local community and promotes knowledge, understanding and tolerance of it’s culturally diverse population. Ofsted 2009

Teaching & Learning Together At Bannockburn, we appoint highly motivated staff, who see themselves as learners too. We are continually striving to provide the best quality teaching and learning for every child in every class every day. We believe children learn best when they are given opportunities to explore, investigate and learn through doing. We bring learning to life by linking our curriculum to the real world. This year our topics have related to paintings, museum artefacts, problem solving and historical investigations. We believe exciting and interesting projects engage children, so they learn in a fun, hands-on way.
“The recycling topic has made my children think twice about throwing things away. They have learnt to become more responsible citizens. Parent Quote We also offer a range of specialist support for pupils who need extra help. These include catch-up programmes, Reading Recovery classes and a number of other support initiatives designed to help children individually.

OUTSIDE the Classroom Over 150 children take part in an extensive menu of extracurricular clubs and classes. These range from Dance classes, French and Arabic to Art, Scouting and Rounders. We provide breakfast and after school clubs and offer additional support for any vulnerable groups of pupils. Children often learn best out of doors. All our pupils experience a range of trips and visits and benefit from a number of experts and professionals who come to the school for workshops and events. Children learn a range of musical instruments and every year our school choir perform in the Woolwich Music Festival as well as at other celebration events.
“Pupils appreciate the excellent range of popular well-attended clubs that develop skills in the arts and sports as well as provide opportunities to learn new skills. Ofsted 2009

From the Beginning Right from the beginning of their time with us, our pupils are valued and their independence promoted. Each of them is unique and we learn so much together, from their diverse experiences and languages. Each transition from nursery to reception and on to Year 1 is smooth thanks to a planned schedule of visits and sessions in the main school. Key members of staff work with the children to ensure they feel happy and safe to move onto the next stage of their education. Our child-centred approach uses practical real-life learning opportunities, so that from a very early age, they are learning problem solving and explorative skills, often through projects that stem from their own interests.
“Because we monitor the achievements and progress of each pupil so closely, we are able to match learning opportunities to their individual needs. We believe in the uniqueness of each child and celebrate what they bring to us. We strive to enable each of them to reach their full potential. Teacher
A New Era We are very excited that our school is growing. From September 2011 we will operate from two sites, one beside the other. This expansion brings new opportunities for our children, their families and the community in Plumstead. With the increased facilities and resources, it will also further improve the quality of our learning. The new site in Church Manor Way school is being refurbished and will be a state-of-the-art modern facility offering a host of specialist provision. We are sure that pupils, parents and the wider community will benefit from the uniqueness of having two sites and we hope it will further strengthen our links with the local community.
“It is a very friendly school. People always help you. Everyone helps each other. Year 4 pupil

Our Children Come First We pride ourselves in putting our children first. We make sure they all progress well, feel safe and are happy in school. Behaviour at Bannockburn was judged “outstanding” by Ofsted. This is a testament to our strong support systems which ensure pupils feel secure and confident at school. Our learning mentors remove barriers to learning and there is a strong inclusion team who make sure all pupils’ needs are met. We provide a menu of specialised services for emotional support and developing pupils’ social skills. This ranges from parent and pupil counselling to helping new families to settle well at the school. We have a very active school council who play an important role in the school; fundraising, buying and organising playground equipment, leading assemblies and even taking part in the interview process for new staff. We support all families in the move to secondary school. Children’s transition is carefully monitored with circle-time sessions so they feel ready to move on. The Head meets all parents to support them in finding the right school for their child. We have a very good track record for pupils, who continue to thrive in the secondary school of their choice.
“As a group of school governors we are fortunate in being part of the leadership of a school community where the staff, teaching and non-teaching alike, are absolutely committed to the allround well-being and progress of the children.” Chair of Governors
