Franklin Sixth Form education at Brompton Academy is forward-thinking and exciting; it’s your chance to build on your Level 2 GCSE and BTEC successes and consider the options for your future careers.
At Brompton Academy we lay the foundations for our young people to enter into successful career and learning pathways; as such we offer a range of courses for those who wish to go on to university or to follow alternative routes such as apprenticeships or employment. These are within the family setting of the Franklin Sixth Form, with its tailored, wrap around package of personal support and guidance alongside learning.
Our established partnership with the University of Kent enables us to offer exclusive and exciting opportunities to engage with Higher Education, unlike any other provider. Curriculum input by UoK lecturers and undergraduates, along with study skills support and unparalleled access to UoK facilities, means that Brompton Academy students gain a unique insight into the world of Higher Education.
We offer a broad range of Level 3 qualifications, in both A level and BTEC options. The expectation is that over Years 12 and 13, students will undertake at least 3 A levels or equivalent and, if necessary, re-take Maths and/or English in order to achieve a grade C or higher.

We offer all students the chance to either lease or purchase an iPad mini which allows and encourages students the freedom to learn independently, thus enabling students to develop their investigative and creative thinking skills; thereby nurturing a real hunger for learning in the 21st century.
Our established partnership with the prestigious University of Kent enables us to access university student mentors who are readily available and keen to work with our students. These specifically trained mentors deliver a programme including study skills, preparing a CV and UCAS application. This culminates in a visit to the UoK campus at Canterbury. This is an excellent link with a young adult whose own experience has led them in to university.

Franklin Sixth Form focuses on fostering students’ life skills, forging and enhancing professional working relationships with staff and developing students as independent young adults. Our emphasis is on nurturing the strengths and talents of all of our students so that they evolve as successful learners, confident individuals and aspiring leaders.

Leadership is encouraged and opportunities are plentiful and it is expected that all students will undertake a variety of roles and positions of responsibility during their time in the Franklin Sixth Form. We have an established and influential Sixth Form Student Council, which includes senior students who work across the whole school within the other Mini Schools.

All Franklin Sixth Form students are role models to our younger students and as such there are many opportunities to take on positions of responsibility; for example many mentors trained in younger years at the Academy continue their work in the
Sixth Form and are seen as positive role models for our younger students at the Academy. Students also work with younger students in lessons to support their learning. All students continue to follow the innovative and bespoke Brompton Academy programme of Personal and Professional Development (PPD). Sessions are focused around the areas of information and guidance relating to future career plans, self development and life skills. The World of Work (WOW) programme allows students the opportunity to apply for paid positions within the Academy. Students can gain the skills, responsibilities and experience of a real workplace setting within the supportive and professional working environment of the Academy. The WOW programme is tailored to enhance a CV or UCAS application and enables young adults to get real hands on experience of paid employment.

In the current climate, many careers are becoming increasingly ‘graduate only’, which places greater emphasis on the importance of accessing Higher Education. We offer students, parents and carers in-depth support to make a successful application to university. In Year 12 we explore the variety of courses on offer and begin to select which programmes and which universities students may wish to attend. This is supported by visits to university open days, campus access, guidance via our experienced teachers, one-to-one mentoring and group workshops facilitated by our Careers Advisor and support offered through external agencies.
Towards the end of Year 12 we will begin the application process for UCAS; including writing a personal statement, which for many students is the hardest part of the application process. At the start of Year 13 we complete the process and send off the finalised forms. We then progress onto the next stage which includes supporting students through university interviews and deciding which offers students might accept. In April each year, we attend the Higher Education Convention held at the University of Kent. Over 130 exhibitors from across the country attend the fair enabling students to find out about different courses, student finance, fees and gap year opportunities. 7
ROSALIND FRANKLIN IS BEST KNOWN FOR HER WORK WHICH LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE STRUCTURE OF DNA – IT IS LIKELY THAT SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN AWARDED A NOBEL PRIZE FOR HER CONTRIBUTION, HOWEVER THE RULES OF THE NOBEL PRIZE FORBID POSTHUMOUS NOMINATIONS AND BECAUSE ROSALIND FRANKLIN DIED IN 1958 (AGED 37) SHE WAS NOT ELIGIBLE. THE NOBEL PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE DESCRIPTION OF DNA IN 1962. We dare to tread where others fear to go and be assured we offer international travel experiences with a twist of the unknown. Young people are curious beings, hungry for new experiences and keen to try something a little different to a traditional trip. We respond by encouraging our students to take a leap of faith and live life to the full. Franklin students have been found trekking through the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, floating in the Dead Sea, visiting the ancient wonder of the world of the lost city of Petra and experiencing the bright lights of NYC.

Other Franklin activities include cultural experiences such as museum, theatre and gallery visits. For those looking for something a little more physically challenging and adventurous you might find yourself signing up for outdoor challenges such as a trip to Kent Mountain Centre in the Snowdonia National Park as part of your A level course work!

You might be interested in joining the Brompton Academy Combined Cadet Force (CCF) which is a young persons movement sponsored by Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. CCF provides you with a wide range of challenging and fun opportunities developing sound leadership skills, self reliance, endurance and above all perseverance.
The Football Academy is set up for energetic and physically fit passionate footballers who are committed to developing and improving their football skills and studying a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Sport. Subjects offered include FA Emergency First Aid, FA Safeguarding and referring. The established Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is another pathway offered to students and nationally recognised certification which can be useful when later considering university, apprenticeships and employment. We encourage our students to work hard, explore, investigate, engage, experience and ultimately enjoy their learning. Like Rosalind Franklin, students in the Franklin Sixth Form dedicate themselves to expanding their knowledge and constantly striving for the next step.
