A Once in a Lifetime Experience
During the Easter holidays a group of Cranford students and teachers made the three hour train journey to Penrith station, situated in the heart of the Lake District, our destination: the Outward Bound Centre. The water in the nearby lake at the centre splashed ominously, as if it were trying to warn us to be prepared for what was to come in the week ahead; jumping in freezing lakes, building rafts and then precariously racing them over long distances in the water – and this was just the beginning. We clambered through freezing water falls as we embarked upon the overnight mission. Six hours of torturous climbing with excruciatingly heavy backpacks was not something we thought ourselves capable of, but when
we finally reached the summit the feeling of accomplishment flowed through each and every one of us; we had managed an extraordinary feat. At our overnight camp, viewing the thousands of shining stars in the jet black sky was a magical moment and one that I believe will never be forgotten by any of us, as it reminded us that there is more to life than just living in the city. This trip was indeed a once in a life time experience; we embarked upon a journey that many would shiver to simply think off. Along the way there was some trepidation and even some poignant moments, but ultimately, we faced the best the mountain could give us and we emerged victorious. By Faizan Khan (year 12)
