General Information

Dear Parent/Guardian Your son/daughter is about to enter a phase in their education where they embark on ‘choice’ for the first time. This booklet is intended to help you and your son/ daughter choose the right courses to follow in Years 10 and 11. Of course decisions taken now may influence the future, particularly when considering Post 16 provision.

Therefore it is essential we, as a school, support you in every possible way.

We live in ever changing times and recent decisions by the government are likely to influence and to some extent restrict the number of choices available to some students. At The Deepings all students will follow a generic ‘core’ of subjects which will include Mathematics, English, Science, PE and RE/PSHEE. The school is available to offer you and your son/daughter guidance in choosing pathways around the core. The introduction, by the government, of the new English Baccalaureate, the EBacc, is an important concept to consider – particularly if your son/daughter is considering Higher Education as their preferred route Post 18. Students who choose the EBacc route will be restricted in their option choices, with the likely scenario of only one free option choice available to them.

I would like to remind you, of course, that your son / daughter is part of the first cohort who will have to stay in full time education or training until the age of eighteen under the RPA. Of course, we will continue to offer a range of pathways to our students – Ebacc, general and vocational as outlined to you during several recent presentations.

We will not force any child along a particular pathway although guidance will be transparent and honest. It is also important that you are aware of the ‘currency’ of each individual qualification as they differ. Level 1 qualifications are at grades D – G and Level 2 at grades A* – C. All courses, GCSE or BTEC now only count as 1 GCSE or equivalent.

We look forward to working with you over the coming months as the process unfolds and we will do our best to ensure that your son / daughter is given the best possible advice. General Information

Key Stage 4 Options – Your Choice

The Options Programme

In Years 10 &11 students will study a broad range of subjects leading to GCSE or GCSE and BTEC qualifications. The Key Stage 4 curriculum is made up of two parts; the compulsory core programme and the options programme.

All students will choose 3 further courses to study in Years 10 and 11. They are able to choose from 17 GCSE courses and 3 BTEC courses. There is also Study Support available for those students who would struggle to cope with the demand of 3 further courses in addition to their core subjects.

Core Programme The compulsory core programme taken by all students includes both examination subjects and non-examination subjects.

Examination Subjects: English Language English Literature Mathematics

Non-Examination Subjects: PE PSHEE & Citizenship

Science: – Biology, Chemistry, Physics – Core & Additional Science – Core & Computer Science R.E. Qualifications and Groupings Most students will continue in their current groupings for English, Mathematics and Science into which they were placed for the start of the academic year. There have been some changes and if there are to be any subsequent changes parents will be fully informed.

In English, all students will study towards two separate GCSEs in English Language and English Literature. In Mathematics, all students will take GCSE Mathematics. In Science, all students will study towards different GCSE Science courses. There will be an element of choice around which combination of course to study. All students will take GCSE Core Science and most will study either GCSE Additional Science or GCSE Computer Science. GCSE Computer Science is also available as an option subject for those students taking Additional Science. The most able and highest attaining students will be able to study for single GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics by choosing Triple Science as one of their option subjects. This is recommended for those students intending to study a science subject at A level.

All students will study a combined RE, Philosophy & Ethics and PSHEE course. Some students will be entered for GCSE Philosophy & Ethics, dependent upon their attainment during the course.

As part of the government education reform programme all students MUST choose either Computer Science, Geography, History or a Modern Foreign Language as one of their option choices.

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) The EBacc consists of GCSEs at C grade or above in English Language or English Literature, Mathematics, 2 Science GCSEs, Geography or History, and a Modern Foreign Language. It is not a stand-alone qualification but a suite of GCSE subjects that together make up the EBacc. The government are keen that it becomes the benchmark qualification for all able students, ensuring that all able students study for a broad range of academic GCSEs prior to A level study. Nationally about 50% of current Year 10 students are taking the EBacc subjects. We would recommend that all able students and parents of able students seriously consider choosing subjects that would lead to the EBacc. In order to achieve the EBacc students MUST choose either Geography or History, and either French, German or Spanish as two of their three option choices.

NB: Whilst every effort will be made to meet all choices this may not always be possible. We cannot guarantee to provide students with the exact combination of courses requested due to timetabling constraints. Also, if a course does not attract enough interest it may have to be withdrawn. If a course is over subscribed choices may have to be changed. There will always be prior consultation if this should be the case.

What After GCSE? – Sixth Form, College or Work (with training) All students are now required to remain in either full time education or work with training until the age of 18. For the vast majority of students this will not affect them in any way – they will join the school sixth form, a College of Further Education or will start employment with either an apprenticeship or a recognised training programme.

The most popular progression route for Year 11 students after their GCSE courses is to enter the sixth form. A full programme of post 16 advice and guidance takes place during Year 11. The criteria for entry to sixth form for September 2014 will be a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C or better including English Language and at least a GCSE grade B or equivalent in the courses to be followed.

Progression from all KS4 courses is available at sixth form or through College. The current sixth form prospectus including the full range of subjects and courses currently offered is available through the school website.

Who is the course aimed at?

Who is the course aimed at?

As a core subject, this course is taken by all students but is split into two tiers:

GCSE English Language & GCSE English Literature are taken by all students.

What will be taught?

GCSE Language allows students to demonstrate their ability to use English in real life contexts and develop an investigative and analytical approach to language topics drawing upon personal experience. GCSE Literature requires candidates to explore texts from a personal perspective and offers experience of Literature today, Literature globally and The Literary Heritage. Students must be entered for both subjects: students may not de-couple the subjects.

• Higher Tier (Grades A*– D) • Foundation Tier (Grades C – G) What will be taught?

Mathematics is the study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols. Mathematics can be divided into two areas, Methods and Applications. Methods consists of learning content such as estimations, number, geometry, statistics, and patterns/relationships. Applications involves problem solving, reasoning and developing connections.

How will learning take place?

How will learning take place?

Lessons can involve group work, discussion, guided reading and writing and self / peer assessment: a familiar approach from KS3.

Lessons will follow a similar approach to KS3 lessons, with group and individual tasks in the classroom. Assessments will be teacher and peer assessed at regular intervals throughout the course.

How is the course assessed?

In English Language 60% of the final grade is determined by performance in external examinations. The remaining 40% comes from performance in a series of Controlled Assessments. Students will also be awarded a separate grade for Speaking & Listening performance, this will no longer contribute to the final grade.

In English Literature 75% of the final grade is determined by two written examinations with the remaining 25% from performance in Controlled Assessment.

Who would this course be suited to?

Both courses are suitable for students of all abilities.

Career Opportunities The course has lead naturally into a study of English Literature, English Language or Communication and Culture at AS and A2 as well as providing skills and a necessary qualification for a wide range of course entry requirements and careers.

How is the course assessed?

This is a linear course, resulting in two examinations at the end of the course. These two papers are 1hr 45mins, with one assessing calculator skills and the other non-calculator skills. Each paper contributes to 50% of the GCSE and no coursework is required.

Who would this course be suited for?

Mathematics is essentially a problem-solving subject and appeals particularly to students with a clear, logical mind.

It also provides students with numeracy and data handling skills, which are transferable to other subjects such as Science and Geography. It is a core subject so all pupils will sit the GCSE in the summer of Year 11.

Career Opportunities Pupils are able to study Mathematics or Further Mathematics at AS/A2 Level if they achieve a grade A at GCSE, or a grade B in the Use of Mathematics. A Level Mathematics is a highly respected qualification and often enables many pupils to pursue their chosen careers. Pupils who go on to study Mathematics at A Level or even at degree level have been employed in a variety of different jobs, such as Accountancy, Engineering, Education, Healthcare, Research, Business, etc.

Who is the course aimed at?

Who is the course aimed at?

Under recent government changes Computer Science forms part of the Science element of the English Baccalaureate. In line with this development The Deepings School now offer Computer Science, together with Core Science for students for whom Additional Science is unsuitable at GCSE. This course is also available as an option for those students taking Additional Science.

Core Science will be taken by all students and Additional Science taken by all students except those for whom GCSE Additional Science will be unsuitable. Those students will take Computer Science as part of their core programme.

The most able students will have the opportunity to choose triple science through the option programme.

What will be taught?

You will follow the KS4 National Curriculum that leads to two GCSEs: Core Science & Additional Science.

How will learning take place?

Learning will take place through various activities including practical work, classroom based study and discussion work.

How is the course assessed?

In both Core Science and Additional Science there are three units assessed by written examination each comprising 25% of the final mark. The final 25% is based on Controlled Assessment work which consists of research, investigative and examination work. Candidates will be entered for the tier that is best suited to their ability.

Who would this course be suited to?

This course is suitable to all students. This course will give a good platform for students wishing to study Sciences at AS or A2 level.

What is Computer Science?

Computer Science is the study of modern computing devices and how they work. Computer Science is also about problem solving. A good Computer Scientist needs to have a passion for finding solutions, an ability to use Maths and to work creatively. If you like to solve games and puzzles then Computer Science is for you!

Our lives are fully integrated into a computer science world of mobiles, tablets and laptop computers. It is hard to imagine our lives without a connection to the web. As a Computer Scientist you don’t play, you volunteer.

How is the course assessed?

GCSE Art and Design is available to all pupils of all abilities who have a genuine interest in Art.

Who is the course aimed at?

What will be taught?

RPE is a statutory requirement and is followed by all pupils.

You will be able to develop themes in a range of approaches including: drawing, painting, printing, clay, mod rock, fabrics and fashion. The skills you will develop studying GCSE Art and Design will be varied. Among them, you will develop a working knowledge of the materials, practices and technology of art and design. You will develop the skills to investigate, analyse and experiment using art, craft and design. You will develop your imaginative powers and the skills to express your ideas, feelings and meanings. You will also develop an understanding of the language and conventions of art and design and an understanding of the place of art, craft and design in history and in society.

What will be taught?

You will study a variety of topics looking at various religious world views including Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and Jewish. The topics will also be explored from an ethical and philosophical view looking at how they interact in our world.

The course is structured on a modular basis and covers the following areas: environmental issues, human rights, relationships and religion and authority.

How will this learning take place?

This course is classroom based and involves study of current affairs and world events; discussion of own views and developing opinions through source work. Students will complete written assignments to aid exam question progression and are given a comprehensive revision guide to use at home for the termly homework projects.

How is the course assessed?

There are two exams at the end of year 11 and no coursework involved.

Career Opportunities Students who study RPE find that it is an excellent qualification for any further study or career which involves working and building relationships with people. Furthermore, RPE develops analytical and discussion skills that help students articulate their own and others ideas using evidence and mutual respect. Many students go on to study Philosophy and Ethics at A-level which is regarded highly by universities and prepares students for the academic world. Career opportunities might include: law, banking, nursing, teaching, social work, police force, leadership roles in business, the armed forces and medicine.

How will learning take place?

All projects start with a significant emphasis on drawing and analysis. You will need to collect reference materials; research artists, designers and crafts workers; develop your ideas through numerous design stages using a range of materials; to produce an individual and creative interpretation of the set theme.

How is the course assessed?

The GCSE in Art & Design contains two Papers – Paper 1 is Coursework and Paper 2 is the Externally Set Assignment – the timed test. You will have to complete two units of coursework which account for 60% of the final mark and you will also have to complete the Externally Set Assignment which accounts for 40% of the final mark.

Who would this course be suited to?

This course is suited to students who enjoy working with several different art forms and who are committed to creating a portfolio of work.

Career Opportunities GCSE Art and Design could lead to further study in school as you could take an AS or A level in Art & Design and go on to study Art and Design at college or university. Or you might wish to go into a job where it is useful to have had experience of art, craft and design, or where you will need to use some of the skills developed during this course. These might include careers in such fields as advertising, marketing, design, graphics, fashion, architecture, publishing and the media.

Who is the course aimed at?

Examining Board: Edexcel

This course is a qualification which offers learners the opportunity to experience a vocational qualification.

The course is aimed at students hoping to achieve higher level grades.

Who is the course aimed at?

What will be taught?

What will be taught?

You will learn about the following; Types of Business, Ownership, Classification of Business Activities, Business Aims and Objectives, and Functional areas such as Marketing and Finance. You will work with real businesses to learn about these areas. You will also learn about Communication, People in Business and Business Enterprise.

You will learn about setting up a small business, the significance of enterprise, Business Organisations, Personnel (Human Resources), Finance, Marketing and Production.

How will learning take place?

As this is a vocational course you will learn mainly through independent project work and through research that you undertake. You will also learn about aspects of business via invited speakers and through class discussion.

How is the course assessed?

In total you will study 4 units. Each unit will be assessed by one assignment. The assignment tasks will be varied and may include writing a report, taking part in a presentation, keeping a log or diary etc. There will also be one examination on finance. This is a relatively new addition to the BTEC syllabus introduced in 2013. Homework will be set, and is likely to take the form of visiting business contacts, collecting additional research and working on your assignments.

Who would this course be suited to?

You will need to be interested in all aspects of Business and be able to work independently on written assignments. This course is ideally suited for students hoping to achieve A – C grades at GCSE but who would prefer a more vocational route. An ability to work independently will be crucial.

Career Opportunities This qualification could help your application to a full time course to study A levels or a BTEC National.

Business Studies is available to all students who have a genuine interest in business and enterprise.

How will learning take place?

Learning will take place through classroom-based study, real business case studies, discussion, independent and group work.

How is the course assessed?

You will be assessed through one controlled assessment and two exams. Both exams will take place at the end of Year 11.

The controlled assessment makes up 25% of the course, the exams 75%.

Who would this course be suited to?

You should have an interest in the world around you. You should see business as being an opportunity to study a course that is relevant to many areas of your life and your future. You would be interested in business and enterprise and developing entrepreneurial skills.

Career Opportunities GCSE Business Studies could lead to further learning: AS/A2 Business Studies or Economics, Vocational A Levels , BTEC Business, HND, HNC, BA Hons, BSc. People who have studied business could consider the following careers: entrepreneur, secretary, construction worker, hairdresser, travel agent, business manager, retail analyst, lawyer, marketing/public relations, teaching, executive, advertising executive or an accountant (or anything that involves business!)

GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE

Who is the course aimed at?

Examining Board: AQA

This course is aimed at all pupils who are interested in food and food production and development.

Who is the course aimed at?

What will be taught?

You will be taught a wide range of practical skills including the use of various pieces of cooking equipment. You will gain a good understanding of the nutritional content and the working characteristics of food. You will also learn presentation skills and serving etiquette.

How will learning take place?

Lessons will be mainly based in a food room but there will be opportunities for pupils to visit outside catering agencies and to work with visiting chefs. Part of the course entails students organising and catering for an event for example a coffee morning.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed by both coursework and written examination. The coursework consists of TWO practical tasks (60%), one taken in both Year 10 and Year 11, chosen from a list set by the examination board and ONE written examination paper taken in Year 11, containing short-answer, structured and free response questions (40%).

GCSE Computer Science is available as an option course and, combined with GCSE Core Science, as part of our core Science provision for those students for whom GCSE Additional Science is unsuitable.

This course would be suitable for you if you are interested in food, designing, making, developing, presenting and serving, as well as eating. Also how different foods work with each other, food hygiene and safety, nutrition and menu planning and costing. This course would be suited to you if you prefer a course that is ‘hands on’ learning.

Scenario 3 – Testing a solution

Career Opportunities This course offers a wide variety of career opportunities including chef, teacher, hotel work, nutritionist, restaurant manager and food development.

Who is the course aimed at?

Who is the course aimed at?

This course can be undertaken by anyone of any ability with an interest in Dance.

This course is aimed at all students. You will do well in this subject if you are committed, creative and imaginative and show a real interest in the subject.

What will be taught?

As part of this course you will experience Dance from many different perspectives, that of the Dancer, Choreographer and Audience. Areas of Dance you will be studying: the technical & expressive nature of dance, factors which influence the achievement of high quality dance, the process of creating & improving and the craft of choreography, accompaniment, set design, lighting & costume and historical & social context of Dance. As well as gaining knowledge of Dance in general you will be required to study one particular Dance and choreographer in great detail. You will also look at a variety of other dance works and draw upon their similarities and differences.

How will learning take place?

Lessons will take a practical and classroom based approach.

As well as studying some text you will observe videos of dance works and interviews given by choreographers.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through 80% practical work and by a final written exam. For your main practical work you will be required to perform in Group, Duet, Solo Dances and show your own choreography. The final exam paper questions your knowledge of the dance works and is worth 20% of the overall mark.

Who would this course be suited to?

Your interests should be in performing, being creative & working with others. You need an interest in creating dance, however you do not need any prior dance experience.

Career Opportunities These may include; AS & A2 Dance, Theatre Studies, or a career as one of the following; Dancer, Choreographer, Dance Animator or Teacher.

NB. This course is available as an additional GCSE which will be taken through a combination of Core PE lessons (2 hours per week) and an additional hour beyond the school day. If interested in taking the course please indicate by ticking the appropriate box on the options form.

Unit 1: Drama Exploration Teacher assessed practical work supported by a portfolio of evidence.

Unit 2: Exploring Play Texts Teacher assessed practical work based on the exploration of a complete text of a play.

Unit 3: Drama Performance.

Externally assessed practical examination of a devised performance.

How will learning take place?

This course is a combination of practical performance, live theatre and written coursework. It will develop a number of skills including self confidence, the ability to co-operate with others and the ability to think on your feet. It is also useful for helping to develop a number of social skills useful for later life.

Who would this course be suited to?

Drama is fundamentally a performance based subject and therefore it is essential that you are creative and happy to perform in front of others.

Career Opportunities What has drama to do with the world of work? A great deal more than you may think! In today’s economy, the service industries are vital; work in these areas can require strong interpersonal, problem solving and enterprise skills.

Drama is character building, develops your self-confidence and really stretches your imagination. In Great Britain, the entertainment industry is massive. Theatre Studies and Performance Studies can be taken at GNVQ, BTEC or AS/ A2 Level, and onto degree level. There are drama schools and courses in such specialities as make-up, lighting, special effects or sound production.

Who is the course aimed at?

The specification is taught through practical work as much as possible. Students can expect to be cooking once a week.

Each module of work is based around a design brief and includes working with bread, pastry, cakes, healthy eating, vegetarian foods and special diets.

How is the course assessed?

The assignments completed within the 4 units account for 100% of the final grade which will be measured in Pass, Merit and Distinction levels. It is therefore necessary to complete 100% of the assignments set to pass the course.

Who would this course be suited to?

This course will be suited to you if you are creative and innovative in your designing and practical work and interested in solving problems, interested in using a wide range of skills and textile materials to produce fashion-based products and using ICT skills.

Career Opportunities This course leads directly into the level 3 BTEC Fashion & Clothing currently offered in sixth form. You could also go on to study A levels, HNDs and degrees in Design, Fashion, Textiles and Art. Possible careers include: fashion design, fashion buying, marketing, styling, journalism, craftsperson, costume design, footwear design.

The course is aimed at anyone interested in food technology.

How is the course assessed?

The coursework accounts for 60% of the total grade. This includes both written and practical. The remaining 40% is assessed through a two hour theory examination taken in the summer.

Who would this course be suited to?

You should have a natural flair in cooking and be interested in all types of foods to create new products for a wide variety of target groups, making food look attractive, appealing and a good standard of product. You should be able to research and work independently to understand that different user groups have different needs such as dietary requirements and moral issues.

Career Opportunities You could continue with this subject in Sixth Form at both AS and A2. Food industry, product development, nutrition, catering, teaching, nursing, childcare.

The skills of Listening and Reading are each worth 20% and Speaking and Writing are worth 30% of the final mark. The Listening paper allows you to demonstrate your confidence in understanding the spoken language. For the Speaking examination you will take part in two speaking activities of your choice which must include some interaction with another speaker and must last 4–6 minutes per activity.

For the Reading paper you will learn how to understand everyday language as well as how to cope with the unfamiliar. Over the two years you will compile a portfolio of written work, for which you will have access to dictionaries and other reference materials in its preparation. The best two pieces will be submitted for assessment.

Who would this course be suited to?

The GCSE courses in Modern Foreign Languages are aimed largely at the red and blue bands although we would recommend that only the red band opt to study two languages.

Career Opportunities The ability to speak a language other than English is an advantage in almost any job but particularly in the field of retail and business as so many companies deal in overseas markets.

Some companies require trainees to learn other languages and having studied a language to a good level at school will give you a valuable head-start in learning a new language.

Many Business Studies courses at University level have an international component to them and if you wish to study a foreign language to A-level, then you must take this GCSE.

What will be taught?

In Year 10 you will study Unit 1 ‘Dynamic Planet’ exploring, for example, our ‘Restless Earth’, ‘Changing Climate’ and ‘Battle for the Biosphere’. You will also study Unit 2, ‘People and the Planet’ exploring, for example, ‘Population Dynamics’, ‘Consuming Resources’ and ‘Development Dilemmas’. In Year 11 you will complete Unit 4, ‘Researching Geography’ which is a controlled assessment based on data that we collect on a fieldtrip to Cambridge. You will also complete Unit 3, ‘Making Geographical decisions’ which is a skills based unit where you demonstrate analysis and evaluation through studying a booklet of graphs, pictures and maps in order to reach a decision about an appropriate action.

How will learning take place?

Learning is largely classroom based but opportunities for fieldwork both locally and abroad will be offered such as Local lectures, Cambridge, a rivers visit to Yorkshire and possible overseas trips to Iceland and Italy!

How is this course assessed?

Each unit is assessed separately with Units 1, 2 and 3 being a paper based exam sat in Year 11. The controlled assessment is an internally assessed project. Each unit is worth 25% and foundation and higher papers are available for the examined units to suit a range of abilities.

Career Opportunities Geography develops a well-rounded skills base that prepares students for many A-Level subjects. The GCSE ICT is aimed at more academic students primarily from both the red and blue bands. Students taking BTEC ICT as part of their core provision cannot choose this course. It is taught for those students that are aiming to enter sixth form and eventually traditional academic degrees.

This course is made up from 3 sections covering 3 different strands of learning and is available to all pupils – YES even if you do not play an instrument but are interested in Music you can still take this course.

What will be taught?

Students will explore how digital technology impacts on the lives of individuals, organisations and society. They will learn about current and emerging digital technologies and the issues raised by their use in a range of contexts (learning and earning, health and wellbeing, on the move). Students broaden and enhance their ICT skills and capability. They work with a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions in a range of contexts. They learn to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of ICT and to adopt safe, secure and responsible practice.

How will learning take place?

The students will work with the exam boards manual. The manual indicates how a student can attempt the course using their preferred learning style and is separated into relevant units. They will be able to adapt the contents and decide how to split home and school learning to obtain the best results.

How is the course assessed?

The GCSE course has an external examination with five compulsory questions using a given scenario and one controlled assessment with a time limit of 40 hours. Students may attempt the control assessment twice, once each year.

The 3 strands of learning are; Popular Music of the 20th & 21st Centuries, World Music and The Western Classical Tradition.

Everyone who has an interest in sport and PE.

The course is aimed at all pupils who are interested in developing their design and making skills and follows the full design process.

What will be taught?

There are three main components of the course: Practical Performance, Coaching/ Officiating and Theory. During the course you will study 5 sports which will be chosen from a guided list of options. You also have the opportunity to participate in one sport that cannot be offered in school, such as skiing or golf.

Theory – You will study three main topics: 1. Examining the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance.

2. How you can develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through physical activity.

3. The benefits of ‘sport for all’.

Analysis of Performance – This element of the course provides a link between the practical and the theory.

You will study one sport in more depth to prepare you for an interview or project in Year 11.

How will learning take place?

The theory aspect of the course is classroom based using textbooks, video and PowerPoint presentations, with the aid of practical examples wherever possible. As well as your two core PE lessons one of your GCSE PE lessons will be practically based.

You will be assessed on your selected practical sporting activities during the course through controlled assessments worth 50%.Theory is assessed by a 1 hour 45 minute written exam at the end of Year 11 worth 40% of the final mark.

You will be taught a wide range of manufacturing skills, incorporating the use of a wide variety of tools and equipment. Consequently you will gain a good understanding of the working characteristics of wood, metal and plastic. You will develop your technical skills through a wide range of small skills projects, which enables you to gain a comprehensive knowledge of construction techniques.

Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on CAD and mass production techniques.

Who is the course aimed at?

For the vast majority of students at The Deepings, it is appropriate that they take the full range of core and option choices available to them.

This is a vocational sport course aimed at all pupils who are interested in a career in the sport and active leisure industry.

“BTEC Firsts have become increasingly popular and effective.

They engage young learners in taking responsibility for their own learning, and develop essential work-related skills.

BTEC Firsts motivate young learners, and open doors to progression into further study or the workplace.”

However, for a small minority it may be more beneficial for them to take a slightly reduced number of option subjects and spend more time working on their other subjects. Some students do struggle to cope with the demands of regular homework, controlled assessments and examinations throughout Years 10 and 11 and would benefit from some additional time and extra support to help them to focus on achieving their best in their core subjects.

The units that you will cover have been selected with a career in a sporting environment in mind. All four units must be covered in order to obtain the full Award, which is the equivalent to a GCSE Grade of C or above. The units to be covered are; Health and Fitness for Sport and Exercise, Practical Sports Performance, Training for Personal Fitness and Leading Sports Activities.

For this group of students ‘Study Support’ will give them the chance to spend three extra periods each week working on their core subjects and their option subjects in a supervised study area.

This course is aimed at those who have a genuine interest in sport or who are considering a career in a sporting environment. You will also need to be able to work independently on written assignments. A lot of this course will be delivered practically and participating is compulsory.

Career Opportunities Some of the career opportunities this award could lead to are; The Armed Forces, Sports Assistant, Pool Lifeguard or Gym/Fitness Assistant. The course also leads on to the BTEC Level 3 National Certificate, National Diploma or AS/A Level PE all of which are delivered in our Sixth Form.

Additional Compulsory Subjects

CEIAG – (Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance) During Years 10 and 11, pupils continue to receive their entitlement and follow a programme of careers education and work related learning. The opportunities for academic and vocational courses of study in sixth form and further education colleges are carefully considered, together with information relating to progression routes, which is particularly important in view of the raising of the participation age.

This new Government directive means that current year 9 students will be required to stay in some form of learning until the age of 18. This does not mean students have to remain in school. If they determine that an A-level or BTEC vocational course in sixth form is not an option for them, they can secure a place at a local college of further education, enrol with a training provider or on an apprenticeship programme or begin work in the labour market – providing that the employer includes an element of training and/or further study.

Students will research and investigate all the options available to them and external professional speakers deliver presentations to supplement these activities. The main school library has an extensive range of careers-related resources relating to job families, university prospectuses, plus guides to help with post 16 option choices. Students develop their skills and knowledge so they can make informed and effective personal decisions about their future – they also have access to a range of careers-based IT provision in school, many of which can also be accessed from home. In addition, careers-related resources are now available in the student shared area of our new VLE (virtual learning environment) FROG!

In Year 10 all students participate in a structured programme of two weeks work experience which takes place after the Easter break. Students will have opportunities to experience at first-hand the `world of work` within a wide range of occupations, and in so doing will develop and practice essential functional, personal, enterprise and employability skills. The Lincolnshire and Rutland Education Business Partnership (EBP) works with the school to provide health & safety risk assessments for our work placements. A parents’ information evening is organised early on in the Work Experience process – normally during October. Issues relating to stereotyping, equal opportunities and financial capability are also explored.

In Year 11 parents are invited to attend two key evenings.

The first, during the autumn term, focuses on the range of post 16 opportunities available to students. After Christmas, the school provides a dedicated Sixth Form Information Evening which highlights the opportunities for continued study at The Deepings School.

CORE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Personal Social and Health and Economic Education of pupils continues to play a key role in KS4. It is delivered alongside RPE and through specific collapsed sessions.

Citizenship is included in PSHEE lessons and this also links with elements from other subjects and the College activities such as charity work.

This is compulsory for all Year 10 and 11 pupils.

The work during PSHEE lessons must cover requirements set by the government, such as careers and sex and relationships education, however the content of the course is influenced by the needs of the pupils.

In Year 11 students may have the opportunity to change some of their choices.

Our aim is that all pupils are aware of important issues and challenges they may encounter in a changing world and that they are equipped with the information and skills needed to make the right choices.

Students choose up to six different activities from a very wide range including games (football, hockey, netball, rugby etc.), fitness activities, trampolining, swimming, athletic activity, The Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Sports Leader Award at level 1.

The lessons are practical based and will be continuously assessed. In both Years 10 and 11 pupils will have two separate 65 minute lessons.

The aim of the lessons are to generate interest and involvement in an area of physical activity, which they can continue into their adult life.
