Judged by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ for the second time in May 2012, and designated a Teaching School in March 2014, Glyn School aims to offer an educational experience of the highest quality for all its students. The motivation of our young people and dedication of our staff are clearly demonstrated in this year’s examination results. Also testament to the calibre of the learning, enrichment and pastoral support at Glyn is the fact that most of our students choose to stay on for our thriving Sixth Form. They are joined by students from other local schools, including girls – 97 at the last count, and we value highly the mixed
nature of our post-16 provision. We have high expectations for our Sixth Formers, challenging and supporting them to achieve their full potential, whether that be pursuing further education or being supported in gaining an apprenticeship. As a result, a large proportion of students gain a place at university; this year 4 students gained a place at Oxford and over 160 went on to university destinations of their choice. Life in Glyn’s Sixth Form With the Sixth Form being the pinnacle of a student’s school career, we work hard to ensure that the time spent in Years 12 and 13 is not only academically challenging but also richly rewarding and highly enjoyable. Glyn’s Sixth Form is an inspiring environment in which our young people can extend their knowledge and develop the skills they will require for higher education and their working lives. A great environment for learning Learning is at the heart of everything we do. During the Sixth Form, increasing emphasis is placed on developing the research skills, independent thinking and self-motivation required for success in higher education and the workplace. We offer a wide choice of courses – as well as the option of an Extended Project – and the curriculum is structured to allow each individual to work at the right pace. Our highly qualified teachers all have a genuine passion for their subject and the fact that Glyn has achieved Investors in People (Silver) status demonstrates our commitment to Continuing Professional Development.
Through high expectations, challenging targets and rigorous monitoring, Sixth Form staff ensure that all students achieve their best. Frequent and clear communication – including three reports per year and a Parents’ Evening – ensures that students and their families are aware of progress achieved and the steps required to improve further. From next September Year 12 and 13 students will enjoy exclusive use of aspects of our new learning and teaching block due for completion in Summer 2015. The facilities include: a Learning Resource Centre, computers and laser printers, dedicated teaching rooms, a careers
library and a cafe. With wireless internet throughout the school, students are able to study independently between lessons and can also bring in their own laptops.

Strong pastoral support is not only the foundation stone upon which our students’ academic achievement is built but also plays a key role in the excellent relationships that exist between students and staff. This support is closely linked with Glyn’s highly effective house system, which offers many opportunities for individuals to contribute to the life of the school through cultural events, sports matches and charity fundraising. At the start of Year 12, students benefit from a comprehensive induction programme featuring activities that promote
team-building, problem-solving and communication skills. Weekly assemblies foster community spirit and daily tutorial sessions allow students to raise any study or personal issues. Sixth Formers also participate in Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) to develop their ability to make informed life choices. Furthermore, we provide opportunities to be involved in Young Enterprise and our very own business programme working with one of our suppliers, Kitbox, both of which focus on employability skills.
Student voice is important at Glyn, with Sixth Formers participating in the direction and running of the school through election to the new Student Parliament, becoming a member of the Prefect body, acting as a Subject Captain or serving as Head Boy, Head Girl or their Deputies. Additional opportunities for Sixth Formers to develop their leadership qualities include mentoring of students in Key Stages 3 and 4, arranging community projects with local residents, organising the Christmas Charity Day and Summer Fair and planning a variety of other fundraising events.

An enriching experience Today’s universities and employers seek well-rounded individuals who have explored a range of experiences to develop their skills and character. To this end, Glyn offers a rich programme of extra-curricular activities, allowing students to pursue their sporting and creative talents. As well as the opportunity to join a variety of school sport teams – including mixed sides – Sixth Formers can play sport at their own clubs on Wednesday afternoons. There are many opportunities for students to showcase their dramatic and musical
talents, including the Upper School Concert and whole school drama production. Year 12 students participate in the Active Citizenship scheme of community and charity work, while a programme of visiting speakers throughout the Sixth Form – including authors, artists, scientists and business leaders – provides students with an inspirational insight into many walks of life. Our young people can also develop their teamwork and leadership skills through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme at bronze, silver and gold levels.

Sixth Formers take part in a broad range of field trips, residential visits and social events. In addition to the annual ski trip to Austria, recent visits have included Modern Foreign Language trips to France and Spain; a Geography field trip to Iceland; Operation Wallacea expedition to Madagascar; a Government and Politics visit to Washington; and a Rugby tour to Canada. Students also enjoy theatre trips and social events with Sixth Formers from other schools, including the annual Leavers’ Prom.

Support for the next steps Sixth Form staff are committed to providing students with practical and personalised advice to help them shape their future. Students receive careers advice from teachers and a variety of outside agencies, and we are proud to have been one of the first schools in Surrey to achieve Investor in Careers status for the quality of our careers provision. In addition, all students are actively encouraged to undertake work experience placements and this year we launched our own Teachers of the Future programme.
Our young people have a number of opportunities to visit universities and colleges, including the UCAS Conference at the University of Surrey. There are also university information evenings for students, parents and carers, with advice on the application process and selecting the right institution and course. We hold workshops on the application process, provide one-toone support in writing personal statements and conduct mock admissions interviews. Specialist guidance is provided for those applying to Oxbridge, including support
through links with two local independent schools. Students also benefit from ‘Preparing for University’ sessions that give advice on study skills, living away from home and student finance issues. Staff also provide support for those making college, employment or apprenticeship applications. This includes workshops on writing letters of application and compiling a CV, as well as mock interviews and help to produce a personal career map.

Course information Glyn School offers a wide range of courses, with most students taking three academic courses and an enrichment qualification in Year 12, continuing with three courses to A-level, or equivalent, in Year 13. All of our courses require a great deal of commitment from the students. In addition to the regular assignments, practicals, essays or coursework to complete, there is also the need to read widely and conduct independent research. The Department for Education has announced reforms to the A-level curriculum for September 2015. The impact of this will mean that we will be offering some subjects as two year courses only.
The requirements for entry into the Sixth Form, for September 2015, are 6 A*-C GCSEs, including English and Mathematics, with four B grades (BTECs will count as one GCSE equivalent). Students meeting these criteria will be expected to study a combination of three A-levels, AS-levels or equivalent courses. As a comprehensive Sixth Form we invite applications from students who do not reach this high benchmark to apply. We will prioritise entry for students who meet our entry criteria. As with any school, timetabling and staffing may make certain combinations impossible and it is sometimes necessary to cancel an advertised course.

Course details: The BTEC National in IT offers a vocational and practical route to a Level 3 qualification and is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future IT employment. Its modular nature means that students who chose to move away from IT in Year 13 will still have an industry-recognised, stand-alone IT qualification.

Mathematics Core Mathematics Duration: One year Assessment: Exam 80%; coursework 20% Entry requirements: Grade C in GCSE Mathematics Course details: Core Mathematics is a level 3 mathematical qualification which is suitable for students with GCSE at grade C or above who do not progress into A-level or AS mathematics. The purpose of Core Mathematics courses will be to develop students’ mathematical understanding and application of maths in ways that are valuable for further study and employment across a range of areas. The new qualification will develop students’ ability to think mathematically, logically and analytically and will build skills in applying maths to new problems and issues. Core Mathematics will prepare students for further study and careers without such a mathematical focus but where mathematical knowledge and its application are nonetheless important, such as geography, business and the social sciences – though we recognise that some universities look for A-level mathematics for these subjects. One of the main reasons for introducing new qualifications is to address the 16-18 ‘Maths gap’, whereby students often forget the mathematics they have learnt previously. Course details: Living organisms, including plants, animals and microorganisms, interact with each other and with the non-living world. There are fundamental similarities as well as differences between them. The living world can be studied at population, organism, cell and molecular levels. A qualification in Biology is required for many jobs in the human medical arena, as well as in veterinary science, forensic science, agriculture, conservation and environmental science. It can also be useful for careers in business, teaching and academic research.

Course details: This course gives you the skills and understanding to evaluate contemporary issues such as climate change and green Chemistry. Handling data will be key, requiring numeracy and ICT. As much learning stems from experimental work, you will need to develop team participation and leadership skills. As you become more skilled, you will take responsibility for selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods and recording your observations accurately, as well as critically analysing and evaluating the methodology, results and impact of investigative activities.

Entry requirements: Grade B in GCSE Physics or BB in GCSE Core and Additional Science (including a B in Physics exams) and grade B in GCSE Mathematics Course details: The course will cover calculations of force, momentum and acceleration; use of linear equations of motion; the behaviour of particles in magnetic and electric fields; astrophysics and cosmology; the “standard model� of particle physics; wave-particle duality and the nature of light. An A-level in Physics is mathematically demanding and as such works well alongside an A-level in Maths. The subject is highly regarded when applying for any science, maths or engineering degree, but the problem solving skills acquired during a Physics A-level are also applicable to fields such as economics and finance. Students will analyse the strategic position of a business and recommend the strategic direction a business should take. Students will develop their skills in assembling and assessing data, to achieve results and communicating their ideas effectively. Course details: In A-level Economics you will learn how to run the country and why prices of products fluctuate so much. You will answer questions such as “Why do we tax alcohol and not fast food?” or “Why does the UK tax high income earners so much more than USA, China or Russia?”. This course is ideal if you intend to continue your studies in higher education. Its broad nature and the skills of logic it develops mean it is highly desired by universities and employers alike. This course encourages students to acquire analytical and problem-solving skills by applying legal rules to problems based around criminal law and the law of negligence. Contemporary issues relating to law, justice and morality are explored. An A-level in Law provides an excellent background for university and careers, not only in law, but also in journalism, local and central government, public relations and business.

Course details: Psychology is the study of human behaviour, the brain and the mind. You will be introduced to a wide variety of psychological theories and learn how to conduct your own investigations and experiments. Psychology develops students’ skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis and is good preparation for further academic study. A-level Psychology is made up of 3 modules: Module 1: Research methods – how to plan and conduct psychological investigations. Module 2: Core studies – an introduction to the 5 major approaches in Psychology through a range of classic and contemporary research studies covering topics such as Obedience, Memory, Neuroscience and Mental abnormality amongst others. In Sociology you will learn to study the world around you with a critical and enquiring mind, analysing such topics as the changes to family life, the education system, religious extremism and the causes of crime. Sociology requires students to analyse, evaluate and synthesise between different points of view, making an argument, and therefore develops students’ skills of written and oral communication. A-level Sociology is made up of 3 modules: Module 1: The Education system and Research methods – a critical analysis of the Education system, its functions, successes and failures and how to plan and conduct social research. Module 2: Families & households and the Sociology of the Mass Media – a critical analysis of two institutions that shape us as individuals.
Exam board: Edexcel Entry requirements: School entry criteria Course details: You will develop skills of leadership and teamwork, learn the principles of command and control and develop your written skills through a variety of different assignments. The qualification is assessed through both written assignments and practical tasks and you will undertake expeditions both in the local area and further afield. This qualification is aimed at students who are interested in a career in the Uniformed Public services such as the Army, Navy, RAF as well as the Police, Ambulance or Fire Brigade. Every year we have students who leave to join branches of the Uniformed Public Services, undertake apprenticeships or start a university course.

Extended Learning Extended Project Duration: One year AS-level Assessment: AS – Year 12: Coursework 100% A2 – Year 13: Not offered Exam board: Edexcel Entry requirements: Grade B in GCSE English Language Course details: This course is ideal for students with the results to support and aspirations to attend a Russell Group University, combined with the commitment to undertake independent study. You will design, develop and produce an extended project with a dissertation of 6000 words on a subject of your choice. It will enable you to take a broad view of your own learning and performance as you work through the various challenges in the production of your first original dissertation.
