HARRIS ACADEMY BERMONDSEY News, Dates & Information - Summer 2014

Dear Parents and Carers, It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with your daughters this year. As you know, HAB has undergone a number of significant and speedy changes since September. While each of these has resulted in a better education for the girls, I know that some of these changes have been diďŹƒcult for all of us. I would like to thank you for the unstinting support that you have given your daughters and the Academy throughout the year. Each girl has finished the year with numerous achievements under her belt, including: success in the end-of-year exams; positive and noisy participation at Sports Day; and, targets from Progress Day that will ensure her continued progress next year. I look forward to working with you and your daughters again in September. With good wishes for a safe and happy summer, Alan Dane Principal

BERMONDSEY CARNIVAL

MENTORING AT HAB

HAB attended this year’s Bermondsey Carnival in Southwark park to help raise awareness about the Academy in the local community.

Our Mentoring scheme at HAB recruits individuals from top flight City companies and meets one to one with Year 10 and 11 students before and after the normal Academy day in the 18 months leading up to GCSE examinations.

Students and teachers ran a series of workshops on Food Technology, Science and English. The Dance and Music departments performed in the festival tent and a great day was had by all. You can see images and videos from the day on our Facebook page.

The aims are to support each student to achieve their highest grades and to provide guidance about progression to college and university.

HAB VISITS HAB has carried out a number of trips this term including this one to Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. HAB does much to show students the opportunities open to them at Britain’s top universities.

HAB LIBRARY The Library has been a hub of activity this year with students borrowing over 4,500 books. We run Guided Reading Groups and Reader Leader. In total there are almost 150 students taking part in these reading projects. Since October, these students have progressed in their reading on average by 1 year and 6 months. To stretch students who are already confident readers we have two reading clubs, The Kindle Club and the Carnegie Shadowing Club. In addition to this, the Library has been running lots of competitions; so far this year 15 HAB students have become published authors.

MUSIC AT HAB HAB is now the venue for the prestigious Commonwealth Festival Choir. Working closely with internationally renowned musicians from the Guildhall School of Music, our vocal and Choral scholars will sing at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in Malta in November 2015, as well as at other Commonwealth events.

HAB YEAR 11 GRADUATION On Friday the 27th June 2014 HAB celebrated the achievements of its Year 11 in a lavish graduation ceremony held in the Academy. We would like to wish all our graduates the very best in their future careers.
