At Haberdashers Academies Trust South we take seriously our responsibility to build an organisation which truly values equality and fairness. This responsibility is reflected in our policies but, most importantly, in the way we behave. We are group of schools situated in South East London. We serve and reflect a vibrant and diverse community. We celebrate the differences between us, and we delight in this diversity. It makes us strong; it makes us unique, and it makes us special. This document is intended to create more inclusive and welcoming environment within the Trust, so all stakeholders feel a sense of belonging. This guide is intended to be used as point of reference for staff when considering appropriate language and includes relevant examples and terminology. is not by any means exhaustive or definitive, as language constantly changes and evolves. However, is important to recognise the language and appropriate terminology that reflects changes in culture and society. Offensive language includes words and phrases that: Reinforce stereotypes Reinforce derogatory labels Exclude certain people through assumptions Patronise or trivialise certain kinds of people Cause discomfort or offence Please note that the terms that we use within this document are reflective of the diverse identities and experiences of British society and there may be alternative preferred terms in overseas territories. The focus of these guidelines is not on protected characteristics, but on situations in which non-inclusive terms can inadvertently infiltrate communication. As it happens, most of these situations revolve around protected characteristics. Heading This document also supports our aims and ethos as a Trust. Our EDI statement of intent (2021) states that: Every member of staff is supported to become the best version of themselves and feel a true sense of belonging within the Trust and that regardless of their role, they feel included, and their voice listened to. Positive relationships support a climate of mutual respect and a sense of belonging. All staff, pupils and parents see themselves reflected in the school. The equality, diversity and inclusion statement of intent is understood and lived by everyone. The Haberdasher’s Model, Our School Improvement Model also states that: 02 At Haberdashers Academies Trust South we take seriously our responsibility to build an organisation which truly values equality and fairness. Engaging and enriching learning
To enable every child to excel
We believe that the curriculum is the ‘bedrock’ of a school and fundamental for individual and school success. The curriculum that we offer is paramount to achieving our mission. It will be stretching, relevant and provides each child with the opportunity to excel. It provides children with the core knowledge that they need for success, alongside a wide range of opportunities which will help them to develop into successful citizens.
We recognise that our children come from different backgrounds, having had different experiences. It is important that these are embraced at school. All children will have equal access to a rich and diverse curriculum which broadens their perspective and which supports each and every one of them to achieve their very best.
Our curriculum will expose them to a wide range of opportunities within and outside of the classroom, which reflects an accurate picture of modern Britain, the World and history. This curriculum will be supported by diverse voices, where all children can see themselves and their families reflected.
At Slade Green Temple Grove our knowledge-led curriculum aims to enrich all children’s lives by providing learning opportunities that address social disadvantage in our local context and is shaped by the priority we have given to ‘learning for life’ and our choice of cross-curricular topics. It is designed to be broad and balanced and is underpinned by the National Curriculum.
Our curriculum recognises children’s starting points and prior learning and as a result we prioritise the development of early oracy, mathematics, reading and writing.
In summary, our curriculum aims to enable children to ‘Engage, Enrich and Excel’.

Together, stronger Achieve 2 “My daughter thrived at Habs from primary through to Sixth Form. The whole experience couldn’t have been more enriching to her future.” – Parent Proud of our education 3 Providing a diverse curriculum which stretches and inspires Talented mathematicians, scientists, artists and linguists have all ignited their passion at our school. We offer pupils a broad and balanced range of subjects, to ensure each leaves with an enviable depth of knowledge and experience. We follow the national curriculum at KS3, with bespoke options pathways at KS4 so that the curriculum is accessible to all pupils. Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) is embedded throughout the curriculum, as well as being discretely taught, and pupils are supported with strong careers guidance to prepare them for the next steps in their learning. Our strong academic track record has resulted in the majority of our pupils successfully achieving university places, including at ‘Russell Group’ universities. The arts are valued within our curriculum to develop pupils’ confidence, articulation and creativity, so that they can engage in their wider communities. All pupils are expected and encouraged to participate in the vast array of activities offered. In addition to our strong academic curriculum, we offer excellent ‘professional’ programmes; enabling our pupils to achieve university and employerrecognised qualifications and access to highquality vocational apprenticeships and higher education. Proud of our talent 4 Developing and championing sporting talent Sport and exercise, both competitive and social, are cornerstones of our offering. We encourage our pupils to pursue excellence in sport, providing a broad range of facilities and options, and catering for both beginners and those with outstanding promise. Whether through team or individual competition, defeat or success, students are encouraged to strive for improvement, motivated to achieve and are taught self discipline and self-esteem, all of which contribute to personal and academic achievement. We have excellent sports facilities and an elite sports programme that scouts for potential. Our students compete in borough, county and national competitions where we have strong reputation of success in several sporting arenas including, athletics, girls and boys football, rugby, netball and basketball. All of our students have access to excellent indoor and outdoor facilities which include a fully equipped gym, a climbing wall & multi use games area and an athletics sports field. Pupils can apply for a Sport Aptitude Scholarship which guarantees the top. In addition to achieving professionally recognised coaching qualifications, those pupils who progress to our sixth form can progress to achieve an industry-recognised personal trainer qualification. “My daughter thrived at Habs from primary through to Sixth Form. Together, stronger 2 The Haberdashers’ Advantage Academy Livery Awards – Crayford selects pupils to compete against other Haberdashers’ schools in the Livery Awards, this provides the opportunity to create a business plan whilst being mentored by a Haberdasher and entrepenuer. Past mentors have included Nick Jenkins (Moonpig) and Joshua Rosen (Twelve Capital) Monmouthshire Enterprise Initiative – Each year 10 Crayford pupils are invited to attend a networking dinner at Haberdashers’ Hall that is followed by work experience at a company in The City. Past organisers have included the City of London Solicitors Company and previous companies that have provided work experience or insight days include Bank of America and Google. Haberdashers’ Scholarships Haberdashers’ Scholarships are provided to pupils that chose to continue their education at university, the scholarships provide between £1000 and £3000 per year to each pupil. Haberdashers’ Scholarships can be provided for each year of university study. Haberdashers’ Charitable Foundations – The Thomas Arno Fund Each Haberdashers’ school selects pupil to support the Umzi Wethu Academy, a social benefit programme, to help disadvantaged young adults. The opportunity also provides the chance to gain qualification to work in the ecotourism industry and walk a wilderness reserve trial. Legal Work Experience (Old Bailey) The Haberdashers’ Company has provided opportunities for pupils interested in a legal career to attend a day in Chambers with Anuja Dhir QC to gain an insight into the work of a barrister and judge marshalling with HHJ Andrew Lees to gain work experience in Court. There’s more to an Haberdashers’ education than what happens inside the classroom. We go the extra mile to ensure that each of our pupils is prepared and equipped for life beyond the school gates. The Worshipful Company of Haberdashers’ generously provide support for our pupils by contributing to enrichment activities and subsidised travel opportunities, as well as funding annual student prizes. Book prizes are awarded to some students in each year group at our speech days and throughout the year, there are competitions across the Haberdashers’ schools, where students can compete for prizes. Over the course of their education at Crayford Academy, pupils will have the opportunity to experience: 3 91% of our students progress to university 4 “I feel valued as an individual and know I am getting the best opportunities.” – Student 5 A Curriculum that Stretches and Inspires The Hatcham College approach is to drive our young people to achieve the best academic qualifications that they can whilst finding out who they are, what they stand for and what they have to offer. 12% Top nationally in Advanced-level vocational results We offer an academic pathway to Post-16 students. Students follow syllabi in subjects from the main UK exam boards AQA, OCR, and Edexcel. Students sit linear A Level examinations in their subjects. Whilst there is no longer an AS Level offer at the College, we regularly track students’ progress and they take Pre-Public Examinations so that we can best prepare them for their final papers. Students can choose from 25 Key Stage 5 subjects, as well as having additional options in community languages. For example in the last three years students have achieved A Level qualifications in Turkish, Polish, Italian, Russian, Dutch and Mandarin. The majority of students study three A Levels. These subjects are chosen when students are registered and are accepted on to the full two-year course. Some students are allowed to study four Levels, if they wish, provided that they have demonstrated that they would be able to manage the workload and challenge required by this academic pathway. There are a growing number of new vocational courses available which we encourage interested students to apply for. These include Business Studies, Sport, Information Technology (IT) and Film Studies. We are continuing to evaluate our curriculum offer and wish for our students to become ambassadors and pioneers for and in their chosen subjects.
