Humphrey Perkins School

Honesty Integrity & Professionalism

Welcome from the Headmaster A warm welcome to Humphrey Perkins School, a friendly thriving learning community that has enabled many young people to realise their dreams over our nearly 300 year history. Our success is built upon a partnership between pupils, staff and parents to educate every child in a caring environment focused on achievement. Five clear values underpin all that we do in our School, these are Honesty, Integrity and Professionalism, Child Focus, World Class Learners, No Ceiling to Achievement and Serving Others. Our motto of honesty with audacity drives us to place no ceiling on what we can achieve. We share high expectations in terms of learning, behaviour, attendance and appearance. Pupils learn in a happy, calm and confident environment where everyone has the opportunity to be extraordinary. We have an exciting future, and the ambition to be truly world class in every respect. To do this we will continue to place learning at the heart of all that we do, supporting and challenging one another to achieve our full potential. I hope that this prospectus inspires you to find out a little more about Humphreys and experience for yourself the vibrant atmosphere and caring ethos, with a view to making an application to enrol your child. Our pupils and staff are waiting to show you around and tell you about their school. I look forward to meeting you in the future.

Child Focus Our pupil pastoral support is built on relationships of mutual respect, developing a strong sense of responsibility to themselves, their peers and the wider world. Character development brings a sense of purpose and levels of self-esteem that naturally lead to aspiration, ambition and achievement. We are extremely proud of our pupils who are worthy ambassadors of the school. From entry, each pupil is supported by a Mentor within their House, who helps them in their daily reading practice, as well as team building, tracking academic progress, assemblies and mentoring activities. Each of our Houses: Belvoir, Chatsworth, Hardwick and Kedleston has its own strong sense of purpose building on our values to foster team spirit, loyalty, character and personal success. By having high standards of attendance and behaviour, demonstrating the five values of the school, or taking part in team, House or school events, pupils can collect House Points.

Everyone is expected to behave in a way which promotes learning and achievement. Our Keys to Success are clearly displayed in every classroom. We take incidents of bullying very seriously and resolve them swiftly. Visitors frequently comment on the calm, friendly atmosphere around the school.

“ The pupils rise well to the challenge of the school’s expectations of good behaviour.” PARENT

World Class Learners Pupils at school today will face a rapidly changing world in which the skills of learning, self confidence, teamwork, leadership and independence are key. At Humphreys we believe that ‘exponential learning’ equips pupils with the skills for life-long learning whether at university, college, employment or at home. This is our description for having the most skilled teachers, a creative ethos, and a relevant curriculum. Our curriculum entitles pupils to access all eight of the fundamental areas of learning throughout their time at Humphreys. The areas of learning are English, Maths, Science, Humanities, International, Creative, Physical and Personal. iPads in lessons enable every pupil to unlock their creativity and helps remove any ceiling to achievement. We expect innovation in the use of these devices in meeting the requirements of the curriculum. Eight Challenges, giving a taste of the world of work and enterprise, are given to pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 to develop vital personal, learning and thinking skills, enabling accelerated progress from Year 9 onwards. We realise that shared experiences are those that stand out most in our memories and help shape our character and ambition. Our elective programme, the modern equivalent of the Humphreys Societies in the 1930s, gives every pupil the opportunity to take part in learning in a different way as well as being good fun! Electives change throughout the year and can range from GCSE Psychology or phonics practice to even building a hovercraft.

“ Support from peers, older pupils, mentors and teachers all give pupils the confidence to flourish. PARENT 08

No Ceiling to Achievement Opportunities abound at Humphrey Perkins School and all our pupils are encouraged to engage with the tremendous range of experiences available. Continuing nearly 100 years of tradition in offering trips and visits we know how these opportunities can really develop self-confidence, independence and character. Exchanges with Germany, trips to France, skiing in Austria and expeditions to Iceland complement our extensive range of experiences within Britain. A full range of sporting clubs and teams enjoy consistent local and regional success, and we are very proud of our pupils who also compete nationally and internationally in their chosen sport. Through the Arts there are many opportunities for pupils to perform in Dance, Drama and Music or express themselves through Visual Media. Developing young leadership such as in sports, singing and the prefect and senior pupil system, has enabled pupils to shape the direction of the school and empower their peers.

Serving Others We know that high achievement is much more likely if relationships between pupils, parents and Humphreys are strong. Clear and frequent communication helps parents to understand how their child is progressing. We encourage parents to contact staff to discuss any issues or concerns. Personal study away from school, in the form of homework or revision, is an essential component of successful learning. In addition to giving parents the opportunity to support their child, it helps develop research skills, independent thinking and self-motivation, all of which are crucial skills for higher education and the workplace. Pupils who need a little extra support with their learning are swiftly identified from primary school by our team of staff, headed up by our Director of School, who visits before they arrive. Our Welcome Days give every pupil coming from Year 6 the opportunity to be part of Humphreys to meet their Mentor and start building friendships before they arrive in Year 7.
