Welcome

The John Roan

School

Welcome to The John Roan School, which has served the community of Greenwich for over 300 years. We value and care about every student who comes to our school.

A close partnership between students, parents and staff is essential. We will work with you to ensure your child is happy and successful. Students are expected to try hard every day and work with us to resolve any issues that may be affecting their learning. Work in the classroom and at home, combined with our wide programme of enrichment activities allows all of our students to leave us ready to contribute to the local, national and global communities. Every Child Matters Achievement in all its forms is our focus and we encourage each student to do his or her best at all times. We offer a broad and relevant curriculum, teaching a full range of academic subjects and an expanding number of vocational courses to meet the diverse needs and interests of our students. Most subjects in KS3 and KS4 are taught in ability groups and we are committed to ensure every student’s individual learning needs are met. We run successful Gifted and Talented and Aim Higher programmes offering additional studies such as Latin and Astronomy and there are opportunities for pupils to take some GCSEs early. We also have a strong network of support for students experiencing difficulties. The Inclusion Department ensure that students receive the necessary support to enable them to achieve their full academic potential. The Department comprises three teams of professionals who work with students to improve behaviour, attendance and academic progress. The Department works with a range of external agencies in Greenwich and the surrounding boroughs. Our school has received a Healthy Schools Award and promotes healthy lifestyle choices to our students. Our sixth form has been graded “Outstanding” by ALPS, the Government’s national bench marking scheme. Students choose from a large number of academic and vocational courses. We offer each student advice on their chosen career or choice of further education. All our students who applied for university last year were successful. ICT is used for learning in all subjects and we are developing a system so that students, parents and carers, can access all school work through the school’s Virtual Learning Environment. .

Work Hard Play Hard

School

Our superb and extensive playing fields, which include all weather playing surfaces, play host to a range of sports for boys and girls: rugby, basketball, football, netball, cricket, cross country, athletics, tennis, lacrosse and rounders. Our students can also learn to row, play table tennis or trampoline. We enjoy great sporting success: many of our boys and girls win regional and national events. We offer over 40 after school clubs across a wide range of subjects. There are study clubs during term time and holiday revision centres. All students enjoy a busy programme of residential school journeys both abroad and in the UK and educational day trips. Music plays a big part of life at our school. Every student can learn an instrument free of charge. They can join the orchestra, jazz band or a smaller ensemble group, or become a member of the school choir. We regularly produce talent shows, concerts, drama productions and host multi-cultural events.

Bring Learning to Life We have our own residential outdoor activity centre, Braithwaite, set in 40-acres in the heart of the Lake District. This gives all our students the chance to experience the challenge and exhilaration of outdoor life. At the centre, students hill walk, swim, rock-climb, canoe and orienteer. They take part in a range of team activities and also cook and clean for themselves. The centre also hosts regular academic–related visits for a variety of subjects including Geography and Maths. Braithwaite is a life-changing experience for our students. The memory of their visit stays with them for the rest of their lives.

What Makes us Special What sets our school apart is our ethos of achievement through caring. We are a very close-knit school. We believe in our students and as a result they believe they can progress and achieve. We’re proud of our special heritage. John Roan, whose family were recorded as landowners in Greenwich from 1598, founded our school in 1677. We have a thriving Old Roan Association in which former staff, students, and parents remain part of our school community and can use all our facilities. The Maze Hill site is a listed building and set in a leafy area opposite the World Heritage site of Greenwich Park.

The John Roan Foundation still supports the school in a number of ways. The Foundation makes it possible for every student to learn an instrument. It funds extra facilities and resources and an annual Exhibition Scholarship which supports our two highest achieving ‘A’ level students at University.

There is a rising trend at each key stage. Ofsted March 2009

Support to Succeed

The John Roan

School

We give students all the support they need to succeed at school. Our school is based on two sites, which creates two small communities in which every student is known as an individual. Every student has an academic tutor, who monitors all aspects of their school life, their individual targets and progress. Their tutor is the main point of contact for parents. We celebrate different cultural backgrounds, needs and ambitions. We operate a positive rewards scheme that recognises the different achievements of each student. Students receive rewards for making a positive contribution to the school community, academic success and good behaviour. Our student council is a dedicated and inspiring team, which makes sure the students’ voice is heard in our school. They have been named a case study for excellence by the DCSF. In recent years, our students have taken part in debates in the European Parliament and have even had tea with the Prime Minister.

Pastoral support is good and underpins students’ good personal development. It emanates from the high level of care provided by individual staff. Ofsted 2009

Our caring, supportive environment together with a strong partnership with parents means students have a strong base for their learning. We challenge them at every opportunity to have high aspirations and instil in them the belief that they can achieve their dreams.
