An education at MGS will be a true adventure for ambitious boys with enquiring minds.
It is our aim to teach boys to think for themselves and to develop a true sense of scholarship. Lessons are taught by academic specialists with a deep commitment to their subject and their pupils. Teaching goes well beyond the narrow confines of examination syllabuses, offering our pupils the best preparation for leading universities, both in this country and abroad. History | mgs.org

The Manchester Grammar School was founded in 1515 by Hugh Oldham, Bishop of Exeter, to provide ‘godliness and good learning’ to the poor boys of Manchester. Over the last five hundred years much has changed, but the School’s core mission to educate the brightest young men in the North of England, regardless of their social, cultural, religious and financial background, has not.
Enquiring minds | mgs.org
At MGS we seek to nurture a life-long love of learning. The School promotes academic curiosity through teaching which is stimulating and challenging and does not end in the classroom. A central aim is to develop our boys’ ability to stand on their own two feet intellectually.

Carefully selected small tutor  groups are at the heart of our  pastoral system. With tutor groups across the Senior School of 12 boys or fewer, tutors can get to know each boy and his family well; they provide individual support and guidance, monitor academic progress and enthuse a boy to try something new.
Education beyond examinations | mgs.org
We expose our boys to a vast range of opportunities, developing them into well-rounded individuals. With over 200 clubs, societies and activities available to our boys – academic, sporting, musical, dramatic, adventurous, creative, charitable – the challenge for them is to decide how much they can fit into a school week. We are proud of the fact that there is no typical MGS boy, except a busy one.

A diverse community | mgs.org
Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. We are proud that for 500 years we have educated the brightest boys in the North of England, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

Over the past two decades fund-raising by Old Boys and other benefactors of the School has created a bursary fund of over ÂŁ25 million. MGS is truly a regional school: boys travel to us from Liverpool, Sheffield, North Wales, Preston, Buxton, and everywhere in between.

An MGS education prepares its students to thrive in a competitive and changing world. Being an Old Mancunian is a fiercely proud part of my identity, the sense of belonging to an institution that has produced so many great men and given so many a thoroughly enjoyable seven years of education. It always struck me that the School did not simply look to increase my knowledge base, but to improve my ability to reason and argue. I came away with what I felt were much broadened horizons, so important for the career I’ve chosen. Michael Eccleston

MGS gave me the freedom to find my own individuality, whilst benefiting from a sense of community and friendship. With the help of teachers, I discovered personal attributes that have defined who I am. MGS is a school that doesn’t just allow for success, but actively encourages it in every single pupil. It was such a special environment. Patrick McCrudden
