Welcome to

Chancellor’s School Chancellor’s has built up a strong tradition of success in its rich 50-year history, and we are committed to maintaining our journey of continuous improvement. In July 2019, we were thrilled to become part of the Danes Educational Trust. We are delighted to be working in this formal partnership with other Hertfordshire secondary schools to deliver outstanding educational outcomes for all students, making the difference together. Our primary aim is to inspire students to strive for academic excellence , but we also want them to take an active part in the full and exciting range of extra-curricular activities on offer at Chancellor’s. We firmly believe that pursuing both paths will help students make the most of their school life and prepare them properly for their future challenges. Important though they are, our excellent results are a welcome by-product of the real business of education, which is to inspire a love of learning. We have an outstanding team of specialist, dedicated staff and a comprehensive range of constantly improving facilities, giving your child every chance to explore their interests both inside and outside the classroom. Our pastoral care provision is widely acknowledged as being of the highest order. Furthermore, we actively foster a culture that enables each individual student to develop knowledge, skills and confidence, as well as respect for themselves and others and a thirst for learning that will last their entire life. Last, but by no means least, we want our students to develop exemplary beliefs and values, so that they and those closest to them can be proud of the person they have become as well as the results they have secured. We are delighted to welcome you to our school so that you can see our positive learning environment in action.

ACHIEVE. ENJOY. EXCEL. Our school motto is central to everything we do at Chancellor’s: We want our students to ACHIEVE their full potential both academically and in their extra-curricular activities. We want our students to ENJOY their school life - to feel fulfilled in their work and to have mutually beneficial interactions with other students, staff and the wider Chancellor’s community. We want our students to EXCEL in every aspect of their education, meeting and exceeding all expectations so that they are ready for life after school.

ACHIEVEMENT Chancellor’s is committed to the highest possible standards of education. Stimulating intellectual curiosity is key to enabling all of our students to achieve their individual academic potential and to acquire the skills to learn for themselves and to think critically. Every student enjoys motivational teaching across a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, alongside a thorough programme of varied, challenging and enjoyable extra-curricular activities.

PASTORAL CARE Outstanding pastoral care means that all students receive carefully considered advice, guidance and support at every stage of their school career, responding to their individual needs and choices. The partnership between the family and the school is central to providing a solid foundation for students to flourish. Every student is valued as a unique individual and all relationships are based on mutual respect. Students are expected to demonstrate the highest standards of behaviour, founded on personal responsibility and self discipline, combined with genuine concern and compassion for others. The core themes of responsibility, respect and relationships are regularly explored to help students develop a moral code and a strong set of values.

EXPERIENCE Chancellor’s successful curriculum enables a tailored programme of learning that caters for individual talents, needs and interests, motivating students to learn and aspire to excellence. Students enjoy the opportunities presented by a strong core curriculum of English, maths and science and the overwhelming majority of students study at least one humanity and language at GCSE.

Chancellor’s is a supportive community, in which staff and students alike are valued and respected. The school is known for its happy and friendly atmosphere and we work hard to promote wellbeing and good mental health. Students are encouraged and expected to develop self-discipline, tolerance and understanding, and an awareness of the world around them. The highly qualified and motivated staff are valued for their expertise and the contribution they make to students’ education.

There are wide ranging opportunities at the school, so that all students have the opportunity to discover and develop their talents. We have a well-earned reputation for sporting excellence. Art, music and drama are also considered to be integral to a student’s holistic learning journey. Recent opportunities have included residential trips to China, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy and the USA.

SPORTING EXCELLENCE The school is very proud of its excellent reputation for sport. Many of our students go on to compete not only locally, but also on the national and international stage. Football, rugby, tennis and cricket are the major sports for boys, whilst for girls they are football, netball, rounders and tennis. Our PE staff provide a high standard of coaching, focused on encouraging all students to enjoy sport and be active; working together and competing as teams or individually. Every student, no matter what their ability, is encouraged to participate in and enjoy as wide a range of sports as possible.

CREATIVE EXPRESSION Creative expression is a key part of a well rounded education and our Art, Photography and Technology departments are very strong, with many students choosing to take these subjects at A Level and beyond. Traditional skills are taught across a range of disciplines including drawing, food technology, graphics, painting, pottery, resistant materials and textiles. We also use the latest technologies so that students are able to design and create work of exacting, professional standards. Drama and music are thriving departments and provide students with a variety of opportunities to practise and perform. The choirs and ensembles are popular with students and have a very good local reputation. The School Musical is a highlight of the academic year.

“You have rightly identified the achievement of sixth-form students as a strength of the school.” SIXTH FORM Our students have achieved excellent examination results at both GCSE and A Level, including many outstanding individual performances. The vast majority progress to secure places at the country’s most prestigious universities. At Chancellor’s, the student leadership is strong. Throughout the school, students have opportunities to make positive contributions to, and play an active part in, the community. This is especially so in the sixth form. Our high profile Head Students and Prefects lead the school council and house system, taking responsibility for organising events and fundraising. Not only do our students have a positive impact locally, but they also have a sense of pride, an enhanced awareness of the needs of others and a wider sense of duty to society.

SUSTAINABILITY We are committed to embedding a whole school approach to enable our students to feel safe and cared for in a changing world, where they want and are able to live sustainably and encourage others to do the same. We want to require students to think deeply about the impact their lives are having on the world. Our transport plan promotes sustainable methods of travel and we would encourage students to continue their journey to independence and learn to travel to and from school in a manner which is sensitive to the environment. Many students walk and cycle and local bus/coach providers run services operating to the villages as well as Potters Bar and Hatfield. We also promote a car share scheme. Our dynamic teaching and learning also provides opportunities for students to investigate and explore environmental issues and play an active role in their solutions.
