It is essential that before undertaking this course you possess a passion for reading a range of challenging fiction drawn from different genres, along with the motivation to carry out independent critical research and study. It is also a requirement that you have achieved a grade B in GCSE English and preferably GCSE English Literature.

Those choosing to progress into the second year of advanced study undertake two units of work: Pre-1800 Drama and Poetry, plus a coursework project of 3000 words based on a selection of pre-1914 prose and poetry form the basis of the course. Your written responses will continue to take the form of analytical and critical essays, whilst texts set for study are drawn from a variety of different genres.

This course provides the opportunity for those of you who did not achieve grade C in GCSE English Language in Year 11 to retake the examinations and make improvements to coursework assignments. With more jobs requiring you to have English at Level 2 it is important for those of you who achieved a Grade D to retake the course.

You would be advised to consider this option if you have not achieved close to a grade D in GCSE English Language. The suite of Adult Literacy qualifications (ALAN) is highly beneficial for those working towards the nationally expected level for literacy. With so many job roles requiring employees to have good communication and literacy skills, the need for qualifications in literacy is great. You can work towards achieving level 2 (GCSE C grade equivalent) by progressing through entry Level and Level 1.

This subject looks at communication on a personal level in terms of your own experience of culture and practices such as weddings, festivals, food, customs, etc, through to wider communication practices across differing institutions and societies.

A2 involves the production of coursework, which is set by the examination board and has a ‘real-world’ focus, and an examined synoptic unit, where you are expected to use knowledge from all units and everything you have learnt on the course.

By the end of your first year you will to be able to show that you can analyse and interpret such practices - what do they mean, what do they tell you and other people about the beliefs and values of this culture and other cultures? What do ‘cultural products’ such as images, art, books, performances mean and communicate about ourselves and others?

You will investigate the nature and purpose of religious art and delve into whether religion is a legitimate subject for humour and fiction before evaluating the impact of TV and the internet on religion. You will be required to debate controversial issues and form your own opinions.

Extended Project

AS CRITICAL THINKING

Level: 3 Duration: 1 year

Level: 3 Duration: 1 year

The extended project is a new qualification that Sixth Formers can take to show just what you are capable of when given the chance. It’s what you need to persuade universities or employers that you have the edge on the competition. No formal lessons, no exams, it is the chance to work on something that really interests you.

This advanced subsidiary course teaches you to think critically by looking at a wide range of topics relating to arguments, discussion, reading and essay writing. You will develop a range of skills that allow you to improve your ability to critically select, absorb, and process information, as well as teaching you to develop and construct well balanced arguments. Critical Thinking is a popular subject that has been shown to help students to improve their grades in other subjects, as the skills learned can prove very beneficial to subjects across the board.

The extended project is where you select a topic that interests you and research that topic. The subject is completely up to you it can be an application of your favourite subject(s) or something arising from your hobbies or interests. You will choose the title, you will choose how to research it and you will choose how to present your findings. It is an opportunity to extend your knowledge and experience beyond the classroom. It can be a written project of about 5,000 words, a production of an artefact or a performance. However you choose to present your findings you will need to write a report on what you did of at least 1,000 words. You will also be required to give a short presentation about your project and what you have learnt.

Critical Thinking AS is our first and only distance-learning course, taught by video conference on a weekly basis. There is a maximum of ten places and high demand, the course proving particularly popular with prospective University applicants.

I enjoy the Extended Project Qualification as it allows me to pursue an interest of mine in great depth. It is the most diverse qualification I have ever undertaken.

Assessment Regular homework is set on a weekly basis and students will need to contribute in class to succeed. Assessment is carried out via one exam.

Assessment This course is assessed entirely on the project you complete. There are no formal examinations.
