FROM THE

PRESIDENT Dear friends of the Cliburn, The 2021–2022 season will be most interesting! First, we are very much looking forward to the next Van Cliburn International Piano Competition! 2022 marks the Cliburn’s 60th anniversary, and we have high hopes for presenting the best competition ever. Many projects are in the works with streaming platforms, agencies all over the world, fantastic opening and closing parties, and most importantly, great music making. As you already know, Marin Alsop will be our jury chairman, and we are so lucky to have her with us. She is an iconic conductor in the United States and around the world who has broken several glass ceilings in our industry; she is also a great spokesperson for the field, supportive of young artists, and extremely talented! I am also very much looking forward to welcoming nine new jury members (out of ten total)! Every time we invite someone new to serve on one of our juries, they leave with great memories and are great ambassadors for the Cliburn and for Fort Worth. Also, the Cliburn Competition will be back at TCU, our birthplace! The new Van Cliburn Concert Hall will be the venue for the Preliminary and Quarterfinal Rounds. A perfect hall for recitals, it will be a great new asset for us. The Semifinal and Final Rounds will be at Bass Performance Hall. In these two rounds, we are thrilled to welcome back the musicians of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. A lot of great music ahead. Importantly, subscriptions for the 2022 Competition are already on sale, and single tickets go on sale September 1. If you would like to attend, we highly recommend going to cliburn.org/2022tickets now to be sure you get the seats you prefer! Or you can always reach out directly to Cliburn Director of Marketing Kim Blouin at kblouin@ cliburn.org or 817.738.6536 with any questions. Also new this year, we will be holding the entirety of the Screening Auditions at TCU in March 2022. In the past, we used to send a small jury (5 members) to travel around the world to listen to 140 candidates in 7 cities. This time—after our video screening jury reviews the 300 or so applications, which include performance videos—we will invite 72 candidates to Fort Worth in March to audition live at PepsiCo Recital Hall at TCU. The auditions will be free to the public to attend and will be a great occasion to kick-start the Cliburn Competition!

Talking about kick-start: for the first time ever, the Cliburn is hosting a golf tournament on September 13, 2021, at River Crest Country Club. The Cliburn Classic will be the first event dedicated to specifically supporting the 2022 Cliburn Competition. Thank you to Vantage Bank for being our Title Sponsor, to Rebecca & Reese Hillard for chairing, and to Cornelia Blake for serving as honorary chairman! We still have some foursomes and hole sponsorships available—come and join us! It will be fun! All information on the tournament is at cliburn.org/golf. If you prefer bigger parties, the Classically Cliburn Gala (the best party in town, they say!) will be on April 8, 2022, at Dickies Arena. Under the theme of NOLA, the entire team is ready to welcome you for a festive night! We are thankful to Jennifer and Philip Williamson for chairing this spectacular event, and we will also pay tribute to Gail Rawl, our honorary chair. Finally, we had a fantastic summer series at TX Whiskey Ranch this year— also our first ever! People enjoyed the immense talents of Joyce Yang, Tessa Lark, and Teddy Abrams under the Texas skies with cool TX Whiskey drinks in their hands. This fall, we are back with one more season of Cliburn Essentials, featuring two concerts at The Post at River East: 2013 Cliburn finalist and Fort Worth favorite Fei-Fei (October 2) and the exciting duo of Charles Yang, violin + Peter Dugan, piano (November 6). All of these concerts sold out last season, so subscribe now at cliburn.org/ essentials! Our signature Cliburn Concerts series will return in January, but with a twist! We are thrilled to be returning to the Kimbell and Modern Art Museums beginning in January; due to the extreme popularity during the pandemic, we are also adding concert options at alternative venues like The Post and (new!) Tulips. Look for that complete announcement and for tickets to go on sale in late September! The Cliburn team is very much looking forward to seeing you this year!

THE CLIBURN TURNS NEXT YEAR

s the Cliburn approaches its 60-year anniversary in 2022, we look back in awe and appreciation at the time and effort of the early visionaries who were determined to make history with the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Originally named the Van Cliburn International Quadrennial Piano Competition of Fort Worth, Texas, Foundation, Inc., the organization was created shortly after Van Cliburn’s victory at the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 as a means of perpetuating his unique legacy of effecting cultural diplomacy through classical music. Instituted by a group of Fort Worth music teachers and citizens, the establishment of the organization prompted an invaluable tradition of volunteerism that is still maintained today. The first Competition was held in 1962, the Cliburn received its tax-exempt status in 1967, and the name was changed to the Van Cliburn Foundation, Inc. in 1976 to acknowledge its expanded mission and programming.

Van Cliburn wrote the introduction to the 1962 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition program book, beginning: In all the years’ history of competitions, there is to be found the enormous courage and inspiration such events bring to a city. When wonderful young talents gather to express their ideas and their ideals in amicable creative combat, it usually nets lasting friendships, treasured memories, and strengthened artistic determination. This opening paragraph still rings true today. As we prepare to welcome a new batch of exceptional pianists to our city next year, we’re fortunate to still benefit from the wisdom and support of many who were involved in that original endeavor, including Cornelia Cummins Blake, whose family hosted a competitor in 1962, and whose dedication to the Cliburn has never waned over six decades. Cornelia is currently serving as honorary chair for the Cliburn Classic, our first-ever golf tournament, taking place this September 13. Information at cliburn.org/golf.

PATRON PROFILE: CORNELIA CUMMINS BLAKE CORNELIA: During the first Competition, there was an outdoor dinner at a ranch near Carswell’s runway (the current Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth). I think it was Ernest Allen’s Ranch. As we were eating, several B-47s took off over us. The Russian competitors and their government escorts looked up and were visibly nervous. This was during the height of the Cold War.

Cornelia with her husband Jim Blake

CLIBURN: Do you play the piano or another instrument? CORNELIA: As a child I took lessons for six years. Realizing I would never remember all those notes, I retired. CLIBURN: How did you first get involved with the Cliburn? CORNELIA: My family (the Cummins family) housed a competitor in my family home on Merrymount for the first competition. CLIBURN: What is it you enjoy most about classical music performances? CORNELIA: I enjoy the extraordinary diversity of the compositions and the creativity of each composer. Having the opportunity to hear the young pianists’ interpretations of these complex works is always exciting. CLIBURN: Do you have a special memory of a particular competition?

CLIBURN: Cornelia, you were a long time Cliburn Board Member and are the current Chair of the Cliburn’s first ever Cliburn Classic golf tournament. Why do you give your resources and your time to the Cliburn and why should others? CORNELIA: The Cliburn Competition brings cultural diversity to our city. It is considered a preeminent competition internationally. We should all be proud of the Cliburn—proud to have it in Fort Worth—and we should all support it. The Cliburn salutes Cornelia Blake for her exemplary service to the Cliburn as a volunteer, board member, donor, ticket buyer, and subscriber, and is proud to recognize her as an individual who has helped the Cliburn continue to thrive and fulfill its mission of advancing classical piano music throughout the world. AN INTRODUCTION & EXPLORATION OF CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR 2ND TO 5TH GRADERS 50 ENTERTAINING & EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS + ACCOMPANYING LESSON PLANS ENTIRELY FREE TO USE FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS, PARENTS, & KIDS AT HEART! For our youngest Cliburn friends! Cliburn Kids is a collection of wonderfully entertaining 7- to 10-minute videos designed to introduce children to the fun of classical music. How does music paint pictures, tell stories, express feelings? Host Buddy Bray and guest artists use individual pieces to explore topics that delve into the way music is organized and structured, counting and rhythm, expressive elements, and lighthearted enjoyment! Programs are geared towards elementary-aged children, and activities are provided for each episode that are perfect for in-classroom or at-home studies. FIFTY EPISODES—sortable by music and academic subject categories—are currently available at CLIBURN.ORG/KIDS, and new episodes will be released biweekly in Fall 2021. Each episode page has links to the supplemental activities, as well as TEKS objectives.

Cliburn Masterpiece examines the who, what, when, where, and how of the greatest piano works. Cliburn laureates and other esteemed specialists, in and outside the field of music, join host Buddy Bray to lead us through the story of each piece— the composer, the background, the narrative, the characters, the technical difficulties, and more. Each episode ends with a standout, full performance of the piece from a past Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. SIXTEEN EPISODES are currently available at CLIBURN.ORG/MASTERPIECE, featuring all-star guests such as Marin Alsop, Vadym Kholodenko, Haochen Zhang, Marc-André Hamelin, Andrew Litton, Joseph Kalichstein, Yekwon Sunwoo, Carl Vine, Nicholas McGegan, Joyce Yang, James Ehnes, Alexander Kobrin, John Corigliano, and many more! There is more to come this fall and spring with new episodes beginning in October. Stay tuned for a full schedule announcement!

FROM THE

CHAIRMAN THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN! After many months of grappling with this deadly pandemic, through lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing, masks and postponements, the countdown has finally begun for the Sixteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022. Next summer, from June 2nd through the 18th, we will welcome 30 of the world’s finest young pianists to the Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU and to Bass Performance Hall in Sundance Square. It’s about time! Once again, the eyes of the classical music world will be trained on Fort Worth, Texas, Van Cliburn’s adopted hometown. And once again, we have the opportunity to further realize Van’s ultimate dream, and our mission, which is to advance classical piano music throughout the world. Joining us in that mission and actually implementing the Cliburn Competition will be over 1,000 volunteers serving in a multitude of ways: acting as host families for the competitors, or event hosts; providing transportation or ushering duties; manning the gift shop or the jury room or the various break and hospitality rooms; overseeing facilities, production, and logistics; and the list goes on. This premier international competition could simply not function without our army of volunteers. If the performances weren’t so compelling and captivating, simply watching the volunteers do their work would be worth the price of the ticket. The jury, chaired by Marin Alsop of the United States— who will also conduct the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra with the six finalists during the Final Round— represents some of the most prominent voices in piano today, shaping the landscape of classical music through their active careers and exceptional artistry. Hailing from 8 countries, 9 of the 10 jurors are new to the Cliburn Competition.

Leveraging our past success with the live webcast and all we have learned over the last 18 months of virtual programming, we hope to achieve over 10 million views worldwide during the Competition, doubling our numbers from 2017. I know you’ll agree that one of the most powerful enhancements of the Cliburn over the years has been our online presence. And finally, as I mentioned at the top of this letter, this past year-and-a-half has been so unusually impactful on all of us, psychologically, financially, and emotionally. Especially in stressful times like these, I find myself remembering good friends and family who’ve passed on and who made such a difference in my life. I know you join me in remembering our Cliburn volunteer leaders that we’ve lost over the past 18 months. Good folks like Louis Barnett, Susan Brown, James Blake, Peggy Bowie, Sara Cargill, Nancy Carter, Louise Carvey, Jennifer Corbett, Mary Ann Davis, Sylvia Dodson, Kelly Runnion Feik, Susan Doyle, Bill Hallman, Marvin Girouard, Adele Hart, Dr. Michael Hawley, Francesca Gupton, Ed Hudson, Gretchen Hughes, Sam Hulsey, Ann Koonsman, Anne Marion, June Leondar, Nick Martin, Betty Claire McKnight, Ted Mayo, Anne Marie Murphey, Kaye McDermott, Darrell Noe, Mary Lynn O’Day, Olive Pelich, Dr. Mark Palmer, Betty Jo Pate, Sarah Ray, Frank Rixen, June Sexton, Diann Stadler, Sterling Steves, Rice Tilley, Anna Belle Thomas, Andy Thompson, and Ann Wilson (and we know we’ve missed others). Our volunteers are our very foundation, we cannot operate without them, and we miss our friends.

If the performances weren’t so compelling and captivating, simply watching the volunteers do their work would be worth the price of the ticket.

And, now, we look forward to the Sixteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and all the effort and emotion and glorious music to come. The countdown has begun!
