competitions,thereis found the
enormous courage and inspiration such events bring to a city. When wonderful young talents gather to express their ideas and their ideals in amicable creative combat, it usually nets lasting friendships, treasured memories and strengthenedartistic determination. As wc approach our third competition, it is so very encouraging to all of us in Fort Worth to realize that there have been many friendshipscementedsince 1962 and many interestingand inspiring concerts played by the outstanding and talented participants and winners. In reviewing the many rewarding moments throughout the past sevenyears, I cannot refrain from again mentioning my dear friend, Dr. Irl Allison. Founder and President-Emeritusof the National Guild of Piano Teachers, in whose unselfish and far-visioned mind this competition was first conceived. Had it not been for his dedicated planning and the incredible and concertedefforts of the late Mrs. Grace Ward Lankford, Founder and past Presidentof the Fort Worth Piano Teachers Forum and the other sponson, Texas Christian University, the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Worth Junior League.this important project might never have materialized. As I said before. this competition was not planned to emulate any other. though similarities are incvitable, but it endeavorsto representthe sinceredesireof deeply interestedpersonswho have sought to encouragesome of the many budding musical souls to visit the beautiful state of Texas. enjoy the gracious hospitality of Fort Worth. and. I might add. the United Statesof America.

When Ralph Votapek, the 1962 Van Cliburn Competition winner, played in London, a critic of the London Times wrote: "I went to hear Votapek play becauseI did not believe any pianist could be worth the sum of $ 10,000, but after hearing him, I must admit he is." Paul Hume, head critic of the WashingtonPost, has written, "A portrait of Ralph Votapek who won the $ 10,000 first prize in the Van Cliburn International Quadrennial Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, would show you a young man who, at 23, is among the brightest hopes in the world of music today." Hume also devoted many pagesin The Saturday Review to a special article on the competition, which he classedat the top of world competitions in piano. Other critics comments about Votapek have been: The San Antonio Express,"ln Votapek, we find a young man whose command of the most difficult keyboard repertory has elicited praise from critics throughout the country with whom we wholeheartedly agree." The New York Herald Tribune, "a spectacular manual pianist of imagination and facility"; The London Times-"a style"; the New York Post, "dazzling virtuosity and dynamic projection." In an appearancelast New Year's Day with the Houston Symphony, Arthur Fiedler conducting, Votapek received a standing ovation. Since 1962 Votapek has averagedmore than fifty concerts yearly from coast to coast and is always presented as the winner of the Grand Prize, donated by the National Guild of Piano Teachers,in the Van Cliburn Competition. After the 1966 competition, Clavier Music Magazine devoted five pages of pictures and comments about the event when Radu Lupu of Brasov, Rumania, was the first prize winner. He appeared with a number of major symphonies in the United States and made his debut at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 1961. He was proclaimed "an artist to hear and to be heard from later." Lupu returned to the Moscow Conservatoryin 1961 and has finishedthere. The impact of the "biggest piano event in the whole world" has been tremendous. With the continuing interest and enthusiasm which has been shown by the people of Fort Worth and friends of music the world over, past and future winners and participants in this competition will continue to receive acclaim and recognition.

The Van Cliburn International Quadrennial Piano Competition began as an idea of the Fort Worth Piano Teacher'sForum. This group of piano teachers was interested in organizing ar regional competition. Sometime later the Forum honored as a teacher. Rildia Bee Cliburn. the mother of Van. at a dinner in Fort Worth. On the occasionof this dinner, Dr. Irl Allison, founder and president of the National Guild of Piano Teachers, announcedthat the Guild would offer as er prize $ 10,000 in cash for a piano competition whic h would hono r th e y o u n g A m e ri c a n p i a n i st,V an C l i burn.
