A NEW CONCEPT RESPONDING TO O NEEDS T A NEW GENERATION

Jewish Youth Network (JYN) is a pioneering charitable outreach organization dedicated to the spiritual and social wellness of the Greater Toronto Area's youth from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12, and beyond.

The Jewish population in the GTA under the age of 24 exceeds 60,000 young people, a high percentage of whom are not engaged at all in any sort of program that promotes Jewish identity and continuity. The Jewish Youth Network responds to this disturbing statistic with a concept that resonates directly with our youth, speaks their language and engages their soul. It is current for today’s times, but includes a built-in conduit for the future. While there are many services out there, few can achieve what is necessary to illuminate the pathway to Jewish identity through guidance, care and knowledge in today’s rapidly changing environment.

This new building, the first of its kind, is much more than just bricks and mortar; it is an essential apparatus to help JYN achieve its mission, responding to the needs

of a new generation. JYN currently operates out of three different rental locations within the GTA. This new space will not only answer their physical needs but will be a major financial step in the right direction. It will also allow efficiencies in the delivery of their services through consolidation and expansion of the education and recreational facilities.

The projected cost of the land and building is $18 million. We are pleased to announce that we have successfully raised over $13 million, and through the following dedication opportunities, we hope to reach our target.

We promise to work day and night and overturn every stone so that no youth are left behind. The writing on the wall is clear. If we don’t step up to the plate now, tomorrow’s synagogue trustees, Jewish day schools, and the other standard-bearers of Jewish life will suffer the consequences.

THE CAMPUS

The site for the new campus is strategically located on Bathurst Street a stone’s throw from the Lebovic Jewish Community Centre and the surrounding development.

More specifically, it is situated across the street from Thornhill Woods but still nearby the Thornhill Westmount community to the south, and Richmond Hill to the north. This, of course, makes the campus all the more appealing, as it is in close proximity to the young and developing Jewish community and provides prime Bathurst Street exposure and accessibility.

Plans for the 27,000 square foot state-of-the-art building will include classrooms, offices, a social hall, study space, an expansive sports lounge and much more. Teens can shoot hoops in the full-sized basketball court, play pool in the lounge, relax with friends at the café and rooftop patio and do homework in the workspace.

There’s something for everyone. And the prototype is revolutionary - a concept whose time has come - as there does not yet exist a Jewish centre in the world that is focused solely on servicing the Youth to the exclusion of all other demographics.

THE REBBE

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, established a worldwide network of educational, social, and religious institutions known as the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. As a result of these indefatigable efforts, the post-Holocaust Jewish landscape was forever transformed, and the lives of countless individuals forever changed.

To celebrate and honor the Rebbe’s leadership, a grand photo of the Rebbe and his wife, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, will be displayed on the entrance wall. Pictures of the Rebbe interacting with teens will decorate the wall, alongside impactful quotes from the Rebbe that relate to youth. A video screen with clips of the Rebbe will be on constant display for visitors to watch and glean inspiration. The exhibit can be viewed through the outdoor gas lamp, a symbol of the Rebbe’s transformative leadership as a lamplighter who ignites the souls of our people with the fire of Torah.

The Ten Point Mitzvah Campaign initiated by the Lubavitcher Rebbe focuses on fulfilling specific Mitzvot to increase your Jewish connection and inspire a greater appreciation of your Jewish heritage. We have designed spaces to highlight each of these mitzvos with inspiring and interactive environmental graphics to portray the themes of each one of the 10 Mivtzoim, or deeds, that connect us to G-d.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT

The exhibit will begin at the foyer entrance to the Rooftop Patio with a digital Mitzvah board outlining different acts of kindness, along with inspirational quotes that highlight the importance of this Mitzvah. This will lead to a display of three large photos of Shluchim and Shluchos worldwide and a world map of Chabad locations. The exhibit will conclude at the outdoor patio with a large and illuminated “Love Your Fellow”

One of the focal components to living a Jewish life is to marry Jewish and to keep the Jewish marital laws. Observing the sacred and special laws of family purity adds a spiritual dimension to marriage that enhances love and intimacy. A strong relationship rooted in Torah values helps form a strong Jewish identity that permeates the home, ensuring that our children continue our Jewish legacy.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT

Framed wedding photos of JYN alumni will be featured at the start of the exhibit. The presentation will continue with a display outlining the steps towards creating a Jewish family, starting with dating Jewish and concluding with raising a Jewish family. A Jewish Identity Wall will continue the Jewish Family theme, allowing visitors to share responses to the question “What makes me Jewish today?” on a dry erase board.

We use “Kosher” to describe foods that comply with guidelines set by Jewish law regarding the production, processing, and preparation of foods. Eating Kosher foods provides physical nourishment for the body, but more so, it ensures that we maintain a healthy soul When we eat Kosher we show that Judaism is not just something lofty and spiritual, but something so basic and fundamental and part of our physical being

The exhibit will display six different types of food, along with the six unique blessings for each food type. The visuals will also include information about the Jewish diet and inspirational quotes about the importance of this Mitzvah.

MEZUZAH

A mezuzah is a small parchment scroll that comes from the hide of a kosher animal upon which the words of Shema are handwritten by a scribe. The scroll is rolled up and affixed to the doorposts of Jewish homes, serving as a decl and reminder of our Jewish Identity, as well as a symbol of Hashem’s watchful protection over us.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT

Fun and creative mezuzah cases will adorn the classroom corridor showcasing the many different types of mezuzah cases that can accompany a mezuzah, from a Maple Leafs themed case, a Raptors case or even an old iPhone case. The exhibit will continue with a display case featuring a large, hand-scribed klaf (scroll), quill and ink.

TORAH

The study of Torah is crucial to our spiritual growth one sets aside time to study Torah, even just a few lines a day, we enhance the world we live in and make it a more kind and peaceful place. Torah lays out the roadmap for how we can live purposeful and meaningful lives the way we think, feel and act.

The Youth Torah, established 5780 - 2020, was written by the youth and other members of our community. This Torah represents the soul, the essence and the shilchut of The Jewish Youth Network Robbins Family Centre.

INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT

The Torah exhibit will contain a secure and transparent casing for the Youth Torah to be prominently displayed. Torah brochures will be available in a display rack, and will provide visitors with information for purchasing a letter in the Torah. Inspirational quotes and information about the importance of Torah study will be displayed throughout the exhibit.

JYN ENDOWMENT FUND

Jewish Youth Network is establishing a Youth Education Scholarship Endowment Fund to help ensure that a distribution of annual subsidies and scholarships will be readily available to financially underprivileged families of the Hebrew School, JYN Academy, JYN Connect, West Coast Summer, and Chesed Programs. This fund reflects the JYN’s commitment to supporting the community by basing financial assistance on trustworthiness and honesty, and effectively opens up registration to all youth regardless of financial background.

To date, due in large part to the support of our past sponsors, no child has ever been turned away from participating in any JYN schools, programs and events. However, as the need is ongoing and expanding, funding resources to provide scholarships are continually required through the establishment of an official fund designated and replenished solely for this purpose.

THE JYN YOUTH TORAH

AN EVERLASTING CONNECTION TO THE TORAH BEGINS WITH ONE LETTER.

In a community-wide effort to unite all Jewish people, JYN has commissioned the writing of a Youth Torah, facilitated by JYN youth, teens and other community members. This Torah represents the soul, the essence and the shlichut (mandate) of the Robbins Family Jewish Youth Centre.

Our Rabbis teach that the communal writing of a Torah through each person’s individual purchase of a letter brings unity, protection and healing to the Jewish people. Together we will promote healing and unity for our people and declare Am Yisrael Chai! Be a part of this project by acquiring a letter— for yourself, your children or grandchildren, or in honour of a friend or loved one.

With G-d’s help, we hope to complete the writing of the Torah simultaneously with the grand opening of the new Jewish Youth Network Robbins Family Centre.

This supersized mezuzah will grace the grand entrance of the Robbins Family Jewish Youth Centre. At over 5 feet tall, the custom mezuzah commissioned by JYN will be one of the largest mezuzahs in the world, even larger than the world-famous mezuzah that sits at Ben Gurion Airport.

The mezuzah will serve as a beautiful demonstration of Jewish pride and protection. MEZUZAH DEDICATIONS

FEATURES

A mezuzah is a universal symbol of our people’s deliverance from Egyptian servitude and has been affixed to the front doorpost of every Jewish home from time immemorial, providing holiness and protection with the inscription of G-d’s name on leather parchment. It is inscribed meticulously by a qualified scribe in Hebrew, according to a precise tradition passed down from Moses. There are 54 dedications available in the new building, and each one will fill the space with wholesome energy and a reminder that G-d is always with us.

It is truly astonishing to be a part of, and witness, the growth being experienced at JYN. Clearly, the most popular ingredient is the Youth, who enjoy the programs and encourage their friends to get involved. What began in one facility has now necessitated the use of three in the Thornhill area alone, and we have added a Centre on Eglinton Ave. to accommodate the Youth who live in the southern sector of the GTA.

JYN’s mission is to engage, inspire and empower today’s youth. Through our innovative programming and dedication to our teens, we are fostering Jewish continuity, identity and strength.

Along with seasonal programming for all major Jewish holidays, JYN offers teens the opportunity to give back to their community and the world at large. Through their volunteer work, mentoring opportunities, and commitment to giving back, JYN teens connect with one another and the world around them in a meaningful and impactful way. JYN teens mentor peers, volunteer with different organizations in the community, and actively embody the change they want to see in the world.
