Welcome To

Falls Park

The Falls of the Big Sioux River have been a focus of life in the region throughout history. Native American people were the first to visit the Falls and bring stories of them to European explorers. The Falls have been the center of recreation and industry since the founding of the city of Sioux Falls in 1856.

At Falls Park, located at North Phillips Ave. & Falls Park Dr., visitors can see the city’s namesake as well as some of the first buildings built in Sioux Falls. Today the park covers 123 acres. An average of 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second. If you’d like additional information about Sioux Falls, contact the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau at 605-336-1620 or log on to www.siouxfallscvb.com.

Winter Wonderland at Falls Park

From midNovember to the first week in January each year, Falls Park becomes a spectacular “Winter Wonderland” with breathtaking lights throughout the entire park. Don’t miss this enchanting winter attraction! See ad page 14.

Visitor Information Center

The Visitor Information Center offers guidance to those visiting the city as well as a fivestory viewing tower for breathtaking views of the park and the city. Your HOT SPOT for Sioux Falls souvenirs too! See page 6 for hours.

Falls Park Visitor Information Center 605-367-7430 Horse Barn

Built in the late 1800s as a horse barn, but it is not known by whom or for what purpose. Perhaps it was to house horses that must have worked any of the eleven stone quarries that were in existence at that time. Perhaps it was part of a local creamery. No records exist to tell us, but the building is charming none-the-less.

Falls Park Sound & Light Show

The Park is also home to the free, historic Wells Fargo Falls Park Sound and Light Show. This colorful display features information about the history of Sioux Falls and is shown each evening at approximately 9:30 p.m., weather permitting, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Falls Park Open Air Shelter

The Falls Park Open Air Shelter is home to the Farmer’s Market and is available for large picnics, special events and more. The Shelter is 200’ long by 42’ wide with a 30’ wide concrete walk. Electrical service is provided to each column and water service is available at both ends. It has 32 covered and 32 uncovered spaces in the lot.

“Monarch of the Plains” Statue

Beautifully sculpted from a 12-ton piece of mahogany granite mined in the Milbank, SD, area, “Monarch” is a work of art created by Darold Bailey.

The Falls Overlook Cafe

Enjoy dining with a view! The Falls Overlook Cafe is located in Falls Park in the old Sioux Falls Light and Power Company hydroelectric plant, which was completed in 1908 and housed three 500-kilowatt generators. See page 50 for more details.

Millrace & Dam

Originally constructed to provide power for the Queen Bee Mill in the 1880s, the dam was raised in 1908 to supply power to the hydroelectric plant. Today the millrace is a viewing platform.

Biking & Hiking Trails

The bike trail in Falls Park connects to 19.12 miles of Big Sioux River Recreation Trail and Greenway as it follows the Big Sioux River and loops around the city. The existing trail system provides access to scenic areas along the river and provides recreational opportunities for many parts of the city.

Queen Bee Mill

The Queen Bee Mill ground its first flour on October 25, 1881. At the time of its construction, the seven-story mill was one of the most advanced in America. The mill burned in 1956, destroying the wooden roof and interior walls. It was constructed of Sioux Quarzite quarried on site.

Arts & Culture

Downtown SculptureWalk SculptureWalk is an exciting exhibit of sculptures displayed year-round from the Washington Pavilion to Falls Park in downtown Sioux Falls. The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit for one year. From May through September, the public votes for its favorite sculpture, which is deemed the “People’s Choice Award.” That sculpture is purchased at the end of the exhibit year for the city’s permanent collection. Each year the exhibit will display new sculptures.
