Australia and the Vietnam War

This series explores the history and social hierarchy of ancient China. It looks at Confucius and his life, teachings and the myths that surround him.

In this program, the HNN team turns back the clock back to the 1920s and 30s, and The Great Depression. The team explores the events and circumstances leading up to the Depression, the effects on various people in Australian society, political divides and secret armies, and legacies of the Depression.

The Vietnam War was the longest major conflict in which Australians were involved. Australians first sent troops to Vietnam in 1962. By 1968, as Australian forces rose to over 8000, opposition to conscription led to huge public protests. Australian forces withdrew in 1972, with a ceasefire signed in 1973.

Australian National Identity

After World War Two, Australia broke free from its ties with England and began operating on an international level, as a global citizen. This program explores Australia’s role within the UN, including UNESCO, the UN conventions and East Timor, as well as its regional agreements, such as the Colombo Plan.

Investigating History

Japan Under the Shoguns

Ancient China

This series explores the people and evidence that helps to understand the ancient past. The first clip outlines how archaeologists and historians investigate the ancient past. The second clip explores the range of sources that can be used in an historical investigation. The third clip considers ancient Australia.

For nearly 700 years, Japan was ruled by a series of military leaders known as shoguns. The first half provides a chronological timeline of key events from the imperial Nara and Heian periods to the three shogunates: Kamakura, Muromachi and Tokugawa. The second half looks at life in shogunate Japan.

Coming Soon The Tokugawa Shogunate: Social and Foreign Policies The Tokugawa Shogunate was a period of relative stability, in part due to its strict social and foreign policies. This clip explores the social laws and codes that controlled all aspects of Japanese society. The foreign policy of ‘Sakoku’ and its demise following Commander Perry’s visit is also examined.
