Rolls-Royce Adds Visual Improvements Technological Innovations to Ghost Series II T

he original Ghost Series took Rolls-Royce up to a new level in multiple regards when it debuted in 2009. For one, the design positioned the company as a less-formal brand and, as a result, attracted a new generation of high-achievers and go-getters. Two, the car, now the most popular in the $250,000-plus class, turned into a status symbol for entrepreneurs across the globe. In response, RollsRoyce saw four historic sales records since the Ghost’s launch. Beyond these distinctions, the Ghost, a series balancing dynamism and luxury with a composed design, presented a refined, ambient aesthetic – one equally appropriate for conducting a business meeting and taking a weekend getaway. Rolls-Royce achieved this by creating a simple concept free of complications for the driver and passengers. In April 2014, the company took a new step with the Ghost Series II. The car made its first appearance to North American audiences at the New York International Audio Show, and what audiences saw was a continuation of everything that made the initial Ghost so successful but with re-imagined aspects. To start, the exterior went through an upgrade, with the most noticeable, at a glance, being the less-formal, softer grill, yacht-like flowing lines, and the stronger flank. Specifically, this design re-sculpts the headlights into a new, dynamic shape. As well, you’ll see revised surface treatments to the car’s front, a tapered “wake channel” on the bonnet, and re-sculpted bumpers. For this last feature, the stronger presence is part of the Ghost Series II’s overall greater width and height. Other visual improvements are a bit more subtle. For instance, chrome inserts add a contemporary look, while the “waft line” leans forward just a bit more. In selecting this vehicle, a car owner gets a choice of standard 19-inch and optional 21-inch forged wheels. Similar improvements give the interior a slightly different character. Re-designed front seats now come with thigh supports, while those in the rear have a lounge-type configuration: angled toward each other in order to create a more intimate setting for improved communication. For comfort, the Ghost Series II introduces three-level heating and an optional massage function. It’s not just the seats getting revamped. This series adds chrome around sun visor lights, a new soft-feel dashboard, and dials and clocks that appear like handmade, luxury wrist watches. As well, the natural grain leather now extends to A and C pillars, and more Bespoke customization introduces two more veneers: Paldao and Walnut Burr Crossband. As well, Rolls-Royce changed what you can’t always see: new front and rear struts, new steering gear, adjusted dampers, a thicker steering wheel, and new rear hydraulic axle bearings. Beyond the visuals, the Ghost Series II’s functionality stays ahead with the latest technology, such as Wi-Fi, navigation assistance, and anticipation of unnecessary delays. Rolls-Royce updated the Multimedia Interface and Navigation system, letting users access these through a 10.25-inch high-definition screen, and included the 6 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. For this last feature, a touch pad, rather than the standard screen, eliminates smudge marks at eye level and further lets users scroll by turning a chrome dial and enter characters by hand in a range of languages. Much like a smart phone, pull and pinch functionality enables you to zoom in for a better view. Media here, too, is enhanced. Users get access to a USB port, iPod and iPad connection, and audio streaming, but what truly sets the Ghost Series II apart is the Bespoke radio, expanded to the car’s new size. The same near-perfect acoustic balance and performance remains intact with 18 individually-tuned speakers, with studio and theater settings. Two bass speakers in the boot, seven spaced in the cabin, and two “exciter” models in the roof create a fully immersive, surround-sound experience. And, at the same time, a highly-sensitive microphone is constantly attuned to exterior ambient noise and adjusts the car’s volume and settings in response. Along these lines, LED lighting technology and Satellite Aided Transmission improve your driving experience. For the former, electronically-controlled reflectors, enhanced by adaptive technology, move in your driving direction with the steering wheel’s motion. Compared to standard lights, these provide greater visual depth and brighter, whiter light to improve driving on dark roads and reduce driver tiredness. As well, the new glare-free technology replaces the older automatic dipping of full-beam headlights. The latter gives the Ghost Series II a new dimension of intuitiveness, letting the car see what’s ahead of the driver. In response, the vehicle selects the most appropriate gear for the conditions ahead, resulting in a smoother experience. ■

Naples Winter Wine Festival | Top Charity Event in the Nation Since its debut in 2001, the Naples Winter Wine Festival has become one of the most successful, not to mention well-known, charity events of its type in the nation. The 2015 Festival has been announced for January 23rd through the 25th at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, FL. This coming year is expected to attract over forty vintners from across the world and 18 well-known American chefs, and will feature several luxurious items and packages up for auction. Beyond the attractions, what makes the Naples Winter Wine Festival so successful is the amount of money raised over the years -- $123 million to date. Yearly amounts go toward providing financial support to more than 40 nonprofit organizations that benefit about 200,000 children. 2015’s theme of “Imagine the Possibilities” emphasizes making a significant difference in the physical, emotional, and educational lives of the most at-risk and underprivileged children. Along this line, its organizers select one vintner, who has contributed significantly to the Festival in the past, to represent all vintners present. 2015 will feature Marchese Piero Antinori, one of the most prestigious names in Italian wine making. Antinori is best known for Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso wines. He has changed how wine is produced in Italy, all while giving more prominence to the Super Tuscan variety. This coming year marks his fifth appearance at the Naples Winter Wine Festival. The other vintners selected represent 15 global wine-producing regions, five countries, and two continents. In addition to the extensive list of vintners, some of the nation’s top chefs will serve food specially paired with the wines represented at the Festival. Lynch Gruppo, was named the Festival’s Chef de Cuisine. Her company includes many of the Northeast’s top dining spots, including No. 9 Park, B&G Oysters, and Menton, a AAA Five-Diamond, Forbes FiveStar, and Relais & Châteaux property. The James Beard Foundation awarded her “Outstanding Restaurateur” four times, and she’s the only female in the U.S. to be selected as a Relais & Châteaux Grand Chef. In addition to the Festival’s weekend activities, Champagne producer, Olivier Krug, of France’s House of Krug, will host a Krug Champagne Tasting Seminar. This first-ever occasion is planned for January 22nd and will feature special guest moderator Antonio Galloni, a wine critic and founder of Vinous Media. There will also be an online auction – the first-ever of this longstanding Festival –that begins on January 12th. Several wines and other exclusive travel and experience items will be up for bidding from that date through January 24th, when the auction closes at 8 p.m. Officially, the Naples Winter Wine Festival begins with Meet the Kids Day on January 23rd. This presentation, lasting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., allows all attendees to see the life-changing impact the years of donations have had. In the process, you’ll get to know the organizations receiving the proceeds, meet some of the children who have benefitted from these resources and services over the years, and hear their success stories. Afterwards, at one of Naples’ most exclusive country clubs, you’ll be given the first opportunity to meet the acclaimed vintners and taste their wines. On Friday evening, guests will attend intimate vintner dinners at the private homes of NCEF trustees and in private settings throughout

Saturday is at the Imagine the Possibilities auction, considered the Festival’s highlight. 63 total lots featuring elite travel and wine experiences will be auctioned off, including a trip around the world in a private jet, rare collections of some of the world’s most sought-after wines, and limited-edition cars, just to name a few. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the pre-auction luncheon takes you through a culinary tour with dishes from the Ritz-Carlton chefs and America’s next “rock stars of wine.” You’ll get to meet the owners and makers of these artisanal facilities, all while tasting their awardwinning wines. In the process, you’ll have a chance to see and eventually bid on the items being auctioned. This year features two vehicles, the 2015 Mercedes SLS AMG GT Final Edition and the Lamborghini Huracán. A special paint scheme, Mystic White II, characterizes the Mercedes. The car opens to a black leather interior, with black and white stitching, while featuring matching wheels, red brake calipers, extended carbon fiber trim, 10-spoke black forged wheels, a black carbon fiber hood, a rear wing, tread plates, exterior mirror covers, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Once the auction concludes, the Festival holds a Wine Down event to celebrate and toast the winning bidders’ generosity, and to relax. Top local chefs prepare an arrangement of delicious dishes, while wines are served from an array of large bottles. Guests can dance to live music during the evening, as some of the world’s best wines continue to be poured. A Celebration Brunch on Sunday finishes the Festival. Lasting from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., this champagne brunch brings together all chefs, vintners, and sponsors. If you’re interested in attending, weekend packages are $8,500 per couple, with a $20,000 premier package that includes reserved seating for a party of four at the same vintner dinner and at the live auction. Marilyn Monroe’s The Seven Year Itch dress | $5.6 million Any dress worn by Marilyn Monroe is attractive to collectors. Those she wore in her films especially so. But there’s one that’s more important than the others. The floaty, cream dress she famously wore above the breezy subway grate in The Seven Year Itch. “Isn’t it delicious?” she purred. Husband Joe DiMaggio, who was on set at the time, was not enamoured with the sexualised nature of the scene. He left for a local bar. The dress sold for $5.6 million in 2011 at Profiles In History. No surprise when you consider it’s from one of cinema’s most iconic scenes, and was worn by the industry’s most famous star. The seller was fellow Hollywood actress Debbie Reynolds, who picked up the dress for just $400 at an MGM auction in 1970.

John F Kennedy’s last signature | $38,837 The finest memorabilia has the power to move you. This is the perfect example. John F Kennedy’s last autograph sold for $38,837 at Heritage Auctions in 2009. JFK signed the copy of the Dallas Morning News for a maid at the Texas Hotel on the morning of November 22, 1963. Hours later he was dead. The maid kept it in her possession for the next 45 years. Kennedy’s signature is one of the finest autograph investments. The value of his signed letters has grown by 11.0% per annum since 2000, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index. The finest examples are today worth $12,700.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta | $38.1 million The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta became the most valuable car ever auctioned when it made $38.1 million at Bonhams in August. In doing so it raised the classic car auction record by 28.7% – set by Juan Fangio's Mercedes W196 at $29.6 million in 2013. What made the car such a hit with buyers? Ferrari is the most popular marque with classic car collectors. And 250 GTOs are especially sought after.
