hen wealthy Gulf Coast engineer W. T. Stewart and his wife, Evelyn, decided to build a home in Merritt Island in 1930, they could not have begun to imagine the historical significance this home would have. But the stories that Hacienda del Sol could tell, if only walls could talk, harken back to days of sitting Presidents, foreign royalty and International dignitaries gracing the halls of this magnificent home.

Hacienda del Sol, patterned after the Southern California mission of San Juan de Capistrano, is a majestic 7.6 acres Historic Mediterranean Estate overlooking the Indian River. When the Stewarts made the decision to build a home on the east coast of Florida, they were split over where they should settle. Evelyn wanted to reside in toney Palm Beach while W.T. yearned for a quieter lifestyle. W. T. decided to let Evelyn choose, in a way. He told his wife, an expert marksman, to shoot at a map of the Sunshine State and wherever the bullet landed is where they would build. As fate would have it, Evelyn made a direct hit on the map with Merritt Island. They bought 80 acres and set about designing their own piece of paradise. The estate boasts over 22,000 square feet of living including the 14,755 square foot main residence, pool house/pavilion, guest cottage and caretakers’ residence. The finest of finishes throughout the estate include hand painted walls, pecky cypress vaulted post and beam ceilings and stunning antique tile and marble from around the world. This breathtaking property once referred to as the ''White House of the South'' is a masterpiece of elegance and design. After Evelyn’s death, her daughter inherited the house but eventually sold it, retaining only a portion of the acreage. The home, was once owned by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas and finally, in the late 1980’s, current owners Bjornar and Bjorg Hermansen purchased it and have restored it to its former glamour. Entering the wrought iron gates to the property one is immediately greeted with a long and winding brick paver drive flanked by old live oaks, and beautiful banyan and eucalyptus trees. around the grounds of the estate are intimate walkways and gardens with vine covered arches and flowing fountains, sprinkled with resident peacocks. The main house is old-world opulence, filled with features not often found in even the most luxurious homes. There is a total of 10 wood-burning fireplaces, custom mahogany paneling, cabinetry and crown molding. The Stewarts selected only the finest marble and hand-painted tile, imported from Spain, Portugal and Tunisia. Massive pecky cypress interior doors surrounded by imported tile are reminiscent of old-world finishes.

The first of three lavish cruising yachts in this series is scheduled to
take to sea in the fourth quarter of 2019, and distinguishes Marriott International as the only provider of luxury accommodations both on land and at sea. “The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will have a distinctive personality and the vessels are sure to be true stand outs in some of the most glamorous ports around the world,” said Herve Humler, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. “This unique combination of yachting and cruising will usher in a new way of luxury travel for guests seeking to discover the world in a relaxed, casually elegant and comfortable atmosphere with the highest level of personalized service.” Itineraries are being developed with an intent to combine the
