VERVE MAGAZINE ARTICLE SPREAD This is the full-spread magazine article I wrote about my passion for interior design. I designed it to resemble a typical ‘mood board’ used by interior designers in their planning stages. The four squares underneath the image are meant to represent overall ‘theme’ colours of the space featured in the image, and the four angled, overlapping triangles above the heading are meant to represent fabric or pattern swatches (two of them feature patterns taken directly from the image). These triangles actually have deeper meanings, as well: they’re triangular shape symbolizes the roof of a building, as the article is about interiors, and their orientation, pointing towards the top of the page, is meant to imply an upwards movement, suggesting a positive growth or ‘expansion’ - as the subtitle indicates - of myself, as a designer.

created as a class, a culmination of our four-year degree. The purpose of the

project was to further our understanding of the relationship between text and

image, exercise skills in journalistic, CP-style writing, and create a unique and expressive design while maintaining the limitations set by the style guide.

Skills Showcased: -- Adherence to style guide -- Typography -- Layout

-- The theme of the magazine, and the only guideline for the subject of our articles, was “passions,” or things that inspire/fascinate/consume you in life. -- The magazine was intended for 18-30 year old adults, male and female, working in creative and forward-thinking fields.

HARRY POTTER QUOTES These are two pages from a book I created called “From the Mouths of Our Beloveds.” Each features a quotes from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series and was designed to visually depict the persona of the character it’s from. The first, “I don’t go looking for trouble...,” was spoken by Harry Potter, and the second, “Do not pity the dead...,” was spoken by Professor Albus Dumbledore. I designed the pages within the same visual identity, they all feature a textured background as well as ‘sub-background’ surrounding the quote. The fonts and backgrounds were chosen to exemplify specific personality traits of the speaker. The decorative elements in and around the quotes (the swirl and the ornate scroll/divider) are meant to imply a pause while reading.

HIV EDMONTON WEBSITE This home page of the re-design I did for the HIV Edmonton website. My goal when designing the menu was to maintain as much space as possible for the main content in the center of the page while also making the navigation as clear and intuitive as possible.

HIV Edmonton’s website. The purpose of this project was to develop an

understanding of the different types of menus (global, drop-down, mega drop-

down, etc.), examine how web page layout is affected by the change of menu design, and experience working with clients.

Skills Showcased:

-- All of the copy and illustrations for this project were taken directly from the

existing HIV Edmonton website, but I reorganized the content of the home

page and sourced the main header image.

-- The only guidelines from the client were to make it simple, clean, interactive, uncluttered, and innovative in appearance, using red, white, and black.

A L L AY M A G A Z I N E A R T I C L E S These two spreads are articles I designed for separate departments in a magazine I created called “Allay.” As was the intent of the project, though their contents and layouts are different, the articles still visually appear to be from the same magazine. The coloured bar in the top-left corner of each indicates the department they belong to. My overall goal for the appearance of the piece was to exemplify simple, clean, and ‘soothing’ design (hence the magazine name, Allay), and I think that can be seen in both articles. On top of the community profile provided, I designed the pages of Allay to appeal to individuals with an appreciation for the value of simplicity and that live by the saying “less is more.”

STUDENT BUDDY MOBILE APP These are two frames from a mock-up I did of an interactive iPad app called ‘Student Buddy.’ It is meant to be a paper-writing assistant for university students still learning the art of academic essay writing. I designed this app with the intention of making the paper-writing process easier, so I created an overall fun, light tone to balance with the ‘gloom’ associated with most university assignments.

application. The purpose of the project was to implement engaging and clear

navigation and develop skills in creating content for an interactive medium.

-- Medium: web

-- There were no limits on the subject of the app, so I decided to create an instructive tool that I thought would be extremely useful for any student.

Skills Showcased:

-- I intended for the audience to be beginner-level university students attempting

-- Interactive medium design

to bridge the gap between high school and university. As the first couple years

-- Navigation development

of school are often overwhelming, I designed this app to help students be as

-- Content organization

successful as possible in their written assignments.

PERSONAL BUSINESS CARD AND WORDMARK This is my personal business card that I use to promote myself as a professional Information Designer. It features the visual identity system and wordmark I use as my ‘brand.’ When developing my brand’s visual identity I tried to embody the ‘spirit’ that I think exists in my work – a unique look and feel that is evident in everything I create. In a word, I’d say my designs are clean, and I focus on minimalism and balance, with a heavy reliance on whitespace and straight lines. Peace and tranquility are the sorts of feelings I hope people experience when they take in my designs, ideals that I strive for in both my work and life.

Background Information: -- Name of project: Visual Identity Design and Business Card

-- Class name: Portfolio

purpose of this project was to develop skills in logo/wordmark creation and

gain experience expressing personal attributes through design.

designer. My visual identity had to consist of a logo/wordmark, a set of

typefaces, and a colour system, and I was also able to include images, graphics,

or textures.

JAMIE CAMPBELL BUSINESS CARD This is a business card I created for a freelance client. They required the card be professional enough to use in work settings while still expressive enough of their personality as an individual in their industry. I chose to rely on impactful typography, ample whitespace, and a bold pattern/texture to imply a modern but dynamic look and feel. The image in the bottom bar of the front and on the back of the card is of roses, edited slightly to make it less realistic-looking.

S U N T E R R A M A R K E T E A S T E R C ATA LO G U E This is a catalogue I layed-out for Sunterra Quality Food Markets Inc., the company I work for as a Graphic Designer. I designed the look and feel of the piece to fit within our existing visual identity while still standing out as a separate, unique piece, visually representative of the Easter/Spring season. (See next page for remaining items)

Background Information: -- Date: March 2014 -- Medium: print

Project Information: -- For this project I was tasked with creating a catalogue to promote our products for the Easter season. It is the third item we’ve created in a series of holiday catalogues (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter). They resemble each other

visually, but are still distinct, separate pieces representative of each of the holidays they were created for. -- The written content and imagery were provided, but I developed the concept

for the overall look and feel of this catalogue. I chose the colours, illustrations,

-- Typography

textures, and main header font used, but the rest of the fonts were already

part of Sunterra’s existing visual identity, and the general layout of the piece matches the previously existing catalogues. -- The catalogue was available in hard copy in all nine of our markets during the Easter season, was emailed to our database of over 1,000 recipients, and is available on our website, sunterramarket.com.

B LU E A R T H R E N E WA B L E S A C E S C O L L AT E R A L This is a poster, tri-fold brochure, and business card I did for a freelance client, BluEarth Renewables Inc., for their Aboriginal Clean Energy Scholarship. grouping of the information and sourced all images and illustrations. I also
