Executive Director’s Message 2018

This past year the North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency celebrated a successful 70th year of excellent special educational, therapeutic, medical, vocational, and social programs. We are accomplishing our mission to be finest educational and therapeutic agency serving children and adults with multiple disabilities in Northern New Jersey. We want to thank Chairman Ernest Canali, his officers, committees, and all of the Trustees for their leadership of our dynamic programs. Your volunteer service and expertise in all areas of budgeting, personnel, and facilities are greatly appreciated. To the Passaic County Elks Special Children’s Committee, under the leadership of President Barry Nelson, we offer our admiration for your 50/50 raffle sales and restaurant fundraisers that provided the resources necessary for facility renovations and program growth.

We appreciate the purchase of land behind our elementary school for a new therapy room. Your strong financial support and selfless efforts make the future bright for our special children and adults. Special thanks also to the staff and our sponsors on the Beefsteak Dinner Dance Committee for an excellent fundraising event. The Committee coordinated the dinner, raffle ticket sales, entertainment and event sponsorships. The funds raised will help provide equipment and program services for our children and adults. We are blessed to have an administrative team whose priority it is to meet the unique needs of our children and adults and maintain our agency’s outstanding reputation. For example, our auditors have complimented Dolores Miles, our Business Administrator, and our office staff for their accurate financial reports and overall business organization.

Unique People Supporting Each Other As We Meet The Challenges of Life

The North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency is celebrating its 70th year as a pioneer in the rehabilitation field for children and adults with special needs. Our programs are fashioned to meet the needs of each individual with developmental disabilities and our goal is to help encourage their independence and improve quality of life. The agency currently serves 260 families from over 40 municipalities in Northern New Jersey. Our elementary and high schools are approved by the New Jersey Department of Education as private non-profit schools for children with multiple disabilities. The NJEDDA Board of Trustees operates the agency. The Board of Trustees consists of concerned citizens who meet monthly to develop policies, provide fiscal oversight and program guidance to the administrative team. The Board has guided the agency through its years of growth into a comprehensive educational and therapeutic organization. 4 • North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency

Toddler Program AGES: 18 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS Thanks to another generous donation from the Passaic County Elks Special Children’s Committee and Board of Trustees, the FREE Special Toddler Playgroup began a sixth year of providing support and services to toddlers with special needs as well as their families. It is an innovative program for toddlers, ages 18 months to three years of age, who are already receiving physical therapy through NJ Early Intervention Services. This program is a pioneer in providing a venue where parents can come together to socialize and support each other through their journey of nurturing toddlers with special needs. There is no other group like this in Northern New Jersey. This playgroup is an adjunct for home-based intervention where toddlers can implement their individual goals in the form of guided play. Activities are geared to enhance gross and fine motor skills as well as language and socialization. All children in the playgroup are eligible for the services that we provide to our students in the school programs i.e. medical clinics, equipment and bracing clinics, Parent Staff Organization and use of our Therapeutic Movement Room.

“I am so grateful for all the help that the social worker has provided me. She always helps me when I need her; from helping me fill out paperwork to making phone calls when I do not know what to do.” - Parent of A. Sabino

8 • North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency

The program is staffed with a bilingual teacher, a physical therapist and speech and language therapist who consult in the program each day. A social worker provides consultation to those in need of community resources. The Playgroup has an average enrollment of 25. The program is in session 3 mornings a week with about 8 toddlers attending each day.

We continue to receive many compliments from the community, i.e. physicians, Early Intervention home-based therapists and staff from St Joseph’s University Hospital and Medical Center. Most important is that we have seen significant progress and growth in the toddlers. The parents are very appreciative. Our Special Toddler Playgroup provides valuable resources and opportunities to toddlers with special needs and their families in our community.

Pre-School Program AGES: 3 TO 5 YEARS

The preschool program features an exceptional educational and therapeutic team approach that best serves young children with physical and cognitive disabilities. This therapeutic team consists of the classroom teacher, paraprofessionals, physical therapist, nurses, occupational therapist and speech/language therapist. Team members work together in the classroom to assist students in all academic and therapeutic areas. Our preschool program is designed to develop communication, mobility, pre-reading readiness skills, therapeutic feeding, sensory integration, socialization, play and art.

Preschoolers also participate in adapted physical education, music, special assemblies and community outings. Goals for this population are geared towards improving mobility, developing play skills, enhancing speech and language and helping the children to be successful students. These three to five year olds are a special part of the elementary program who attend a full-day session, Monday through Friday. The team works closely with parents, physicians, specialists, and child study teams in order to best meet the children’s individual needs. When the students reach age five, they move to an elementary classroom, if appropriate, as indicated in their Individual Educational Plans.

Chairperson’s Message 2018 Dear Friends of the North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency, and social services for our children and adults. We are all thankful for his expertise, guidance, and leadership. Our independent auditors report excellent recordkeeping, internal controls, and full regulatory compliance.

For many years, I had heard about the wonderful work being performed at the then-named Passaic County Elks CP Center by Dr. Weiss and his team. Since joining the Board several years ago, I came to appreciate the efforts, challenges, and successes here at NJEDDA. Without exception, I have found all associated with this program to be highly committed, enthusiastic, energetic, and resourceful. This year ASAH, our state private school association, recognized three of our staff for their exemplary work & dedication.

Over 70% of our budget is instructional, far above guidelines. Our school administration costs are far below maximum guidelines, better than most institutions. We remain on target to balancing budgets of both schools. Kudos to Dr. Weiss and the Finance Staff.

Of these, our own Joan Rios, Elementary School Aide, was honored as the State Paraprofessional of the Year.

There were continued challenges this year with such issues as enrollment, facilities, the everchanging statutory regulations, and state funding. We saw a drop in enrollment in our High School due to the large graduating class of 2017.

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees over this past year. I have seen the commitment of so many people all working towards our common goals --- our teachers and support staff, our leaders, our financial and administrative staff, members of the Board, members of the Special Children’s Committee, concerned citizens, and relatives of those who derive benefits from our combined efforts.

But there is a focus to increase enrollment in our schools. We have seen continued expansion into other counties, most notably Hudson and Union Counties. We have undertaken the development of a formalized marketing and public relations plan to define our target market and our competitive edge with the goal of increasing enrollment.

Executive Director Dr. William Weiss has been instrumental in ensuring that NJEDDA provides the finest in educational, therapeutic, medical,

Our Adult Program continues to be under-funded due to state budget cuts. Many changes to the Department of Education fiscal code for private schools brings its own set of challenges.

Parents & Families Inspire Us

Our agency’s mission is to bring our families, our children and adults and staff together to celebrate and support each other. We welcome parents and families to visit us during the program day so that they can understand our dynamic educational and therapeutic techniques.

“I am a father, a single parent of a disabled little girl, my daughter Maya Rose. I love her more than life itself. She cannot walk, talk or stand independently. I have tried every school you can imagine and I found stress and aggravation along the way, but I fortunately found the North Jersey Elks Elementary School. I am extremely impressed with the equipment, classrooms and attention that the staff gives to every child. The physical therapist has been amazing, trying different tactics every week to help Maya. The occupational and speech therapists are very informative and inform me of Maya’s growth and improvements. I feel totally secure every day when I leave her at school and Maya gets upset if she has to miss a single day. We love this amazing Special School. Parent Alex Dwek

Also, parents attend Individualized Educational Plan (I.E.P.) meetings and participate in the planning for their children. This year in all three of our facilities we enjoyed a variety of special family days and meetings with our parents. Our Open House days, holiday parties, International Days, concerts, assemblies, socials, awards and graduations are all exciting times for the staff to interact with family members. The parents and staff send out special thanks to United Parcel Service (UPS) for the holiday gifts and the visit from Santa and the Holiday Express Band for their concerts in all three facilities. All of the events were well attended and created vivid, unique memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you parents, guardians, and siblings for sharing these events with us. You inspire us to greater levels of success!

NJEDDA High School Travels

NJEDDA High School students, with the support of the Elks, provides a yearly opportunity for students to plan a four day excursion to a city within our culturally rich Northeast area. Students take to the highways to find art museums, aquariums, a day by the sea and outdoor environments, historical sites and experiences to enrich the learning goals of their year. They have been to our nation’s Capitol and while in Washington D.C. toured various landmarks and enjoyed dining and spent a lot of time walking. A recent unit on “The Scarlet Letter” and “Moby Dick” led them to Boston where they sailed the seas to observe whales and even took part in history as they threw tea in Boston Harbor. They also motored over to Sturbridge Village to see the colonial life up close. 32 • North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency

Students used Life Skills to manage time, read schedules, and do daily living skills in their hotel rooms and restaurants along the way. When they arrive home on the last day, they are tired, but much richer in ways of the world after their journey. www.NJEDDA.org • (973) 772-2600 • 33

Would You Like to Help NJEDDA?

Every dollar donated to NJEDDA provides educational and therapeutic services or purchases equipment for our special needs children and adults. Some gifts may bring the simple joy of story telling by purchasing books and then reading to a child. Others donations or endowments can be made to help fund specific items. That can include therapeutic items, such as specialized chairs or computers, to something larger, such as an expansion to one of our three facilities. There are many needs at NJEDDA and that list evolves annually, sometimes even daily! If you would like to find out more and discuss ways you can help, call Dr. William Weiss at 973-772-2600 x 101 or email him at WWeiss@njedda.org. Donations are made directly to NJEDDA. Find out more by clicking the donations link on our website: www.njedda.org. We also participate in the CARS Donation Program. If you have a car, van, boat, or RV that you feel no longer is worth fixing, you can donate it by call 877-537-5277 or visit cardonatingiseasy.org. The people at CARS will pick up your vehicle, NJEDDA will receive a donation and you will receive a tax receipt for the value. 34 • North Jersey Elks Developmental Disabilities Agency

2018 Financial Report 2018 Throughout the year, changes may occur in funding that require close and strategic monitoring of spending patterns. This is not an unusual phenomenon for a not-for-profit organization. The key is to spend wisely, adhere to the goals and objective of the mission statement and to identify new revenue streams. Thanks to the generosity and continual support of the Board of Trustees, the Special Children’s Committee, corporate grants and private donations, we are meeting the challenge of changing enrollments in our high school program and adjusting our service delivery for adults under a new fee for service funding model. It takes skilled leadership and the dedication of many whose support we depend upon to make a positive impact on the lives of individual citizens with disabilities. Respectfully, we remain dedicated to this cause.
