HISTORIC FIREHOUSE REVIVAL 10 CARMEL ST. | 4BR/4.5BA | $2,995,000

Michelle Balog

Incredibly unique, this 1909 firehouse revival offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to own a piece of San Francisco’s history. Situated at the pinnacle of Ashbury Heights near the entry to Twin Peaks and overlooking Cole Valley and the Sutro hillside, architect Newton J. Tharp designed this outstanding structure in the Mission Revival style with structural elements that were built to last. Historically, this outstanding property housed the horses to draw the fire engines. The roofline tower, with its bird’s-eye views of the entire city, still contains hooks used to hang the fire hoses out to dry. The interiors of the townhouse are thoroughly modernist, providing a striking contrast to its historic exterior. Designed as a split-level, the first floor is comprised of a living room, kitchen, dining room, and study with 1.5 bathrooms. One of two existing fire poles remains here as well as the historic spiral staircase, floating in the space like a monumental sculpture. Many of the doors were reclaimed from their original use in the building and have been stripped of layers of ancient paint to reveal the metal finish that was used to protect them from fire. The original wood floors in the living room are stained in rich ebony and retain their gently worn character. A series of cantilevered maple-clad steel stairs lead up to the kitchen, dining room, and second floor. Stunning and monumental in scale, echoing the historic original, a new spiral staircase leads to the third floor, where any number of possible configurations might exist, depending on what is most desired: a large office space or family room, two additional bedrooms, or even the master suite.

PADRECITO RESTAURANT

What I like most about Cole Valley Fitness is that it is so close to my house, there is lots of natural light, and you can pay as you go.

Delicious! Great cocktails, great service and atmosphere, tasty and fresh chips and salsa. I loved my enchiladas, and my fiancé’s steak tacos were outstanding. I’d come back.

SAY CHEESE

ALPHA MARKET

In the heart of Cole Valley, Say Cheese is seriously killing it. I would normally feel like a complete idiot walking into a store like this because everything looks so fancy, but the staff immediately acknowledges your presence and asks what you’re looking for today.

Alpha Market is a clean, well-lit, and well-stocked corner market. I’m always amazed at the staples I can pickup here: organic spices, Sriracha, Mary’s chicken, Niman Ranch meat, nice bottles of wine, fresh produce, fresh mozzarella, soy milk, artisanal chocolate, and even Acme bread. For Cole Valley residents, there’s lots to like about Alpha, especially the convenience.
