The Clocktower building was originally constructed in 1907 for the Max Schmidt Lithograph Corporation, a printing firm that designed and produced the classic California fruit box labels and posters for the Panama Public International Expedition. The concrete, brick, and timber structure was renovated into 127 live/work lofts resulting in a rich variety of unique unit types particularly suited to the emerging lifestyle. The building, an amalgamation of four phases of construction in timber, masonry, and concrete with a 10-story steel frame clock tower, provided the opportunity to create the environment of a “district” as opposed to that of an apartment complex, resulting in a rich variety of unique interiors; no two units are alike.

The highlight of the home is the water views, which are very rare for a loft conversion building. In addition to the south-facing wall of loft-paned windows, military gun articulators were refitted with mirrors that further capture the views of the Bay.

Next to my condo building at The Potrero on 17th and Kansas, this unassuming little sushi restaurant throws down some really nice work. I like to sit at the sushi bar and have them pick for me. I think you get the best cuts that way. Their live uni is rad, if you are into that kind of thing! Their more basic rolls and fish are always high quality too.

Pinkies is my go-to nail salon. It’s clean, friendly and high-quality. I love that you pay before polish… it makes so much sense! Keep those nails looking purdy.

This small restaurant “on the Hill” (i.e. on the main 18th Street strip) is packed on weekends. Insiders know that it opens really early, so go on a weekday at 7:30 am and enjoy the fried egg sandwich, lemon ricotta pancakes, and crispy fried potatoes.

The Potrero Hill Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is a real gem on 20th Street. Of particular interest is the Potrero Hill Archives Project collection. The collection was started in 1986 to record oral histories of Potrero Hill residents and gather old photographs of the neighborhood.
