Chapter 1

OUR MISSION & VISION

For nearly a century at Clinique La Prairie we have been dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier, and fuller lives. Rooted in our strong heritage and expertise, we believe that Longevity is influenced by many aspects. This includes of course our four pillars of Medical, Nutrition, Movement and Wellbeing, and another crucial aspect is the environment.

HEALTHIER LIFE IN A HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT, OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE

The environment in which we live plays an essential role in determining the quality of our lives. The air we breathe, the purity of the water we drink, the nutrients in the food we grow, and the ecosystems that support biodiversity all contribute to our well-being. At Clinique La Prairie, we recognise that we have a critical role to play in the preservation and protection of these natural systems, which are so intimately connected to human health. In safeguarding the environment, we help secure the foundation for longevity and vitality for generations to come.

As our global presence continues to expand, we are more committed than ever to acting with responsibility and foresight. Our international footprint brings together a diverse range of professionals, industries, and communities. Through this network, we are uniquely positioned to create a collective impact. We firmly believe that meaningful and lasting change can only be achieved through collaboration across disciplines and sectors, combining expertise, innovation, and excellence to address the challenges and opportunities we face together.

By continuously examining our practices, sharing knowledge, and fostering innovative solutions, we are determined to contribute to a healthier future for both individuals and the planet. We are inspired to lead by example, ensuring that sustainability and longevity go hand in hand as we move forward into the next century of our journey.

Our mission & vision

OUR VISION FOR SUSTAINABILITY: A COLLECTIVE JOURNEY

Dear Partners and Friends,

At Clinique La Prairie, our pursuit of excellence isn’t just about extending life; it’s about ensuring that life thrives—for our guests, our communities, and our planet. This is why, for several months now, we have been taking decisive steps towards a more sustainable future. Although we have chosen to keep these efforts internal until now, the progress we have made fills us with both excitement and deep commitment.

In today’s world, where our actions have far-reaching consequences, we believe we have a responsibility to lead by example. We must be guided by our values in everything we do. While our primary mission is to create remarkable experiences within our walls and help people live longer, healthier and better lives, we aspire to do more.

This is why we have started integrating sustainability into every aspect of our work—whether by reducing our carbon footprint, ensuring ethical sourcing, or fostering biodiversity. Our CSR team is constantly exploring new ways to minimize waste, optimize energy, and build strong connections with local communities.

However, we believe that real change happens when we come together. We would like to personally invite you—our cherished partners, guests, and colleagues—to join us on this path. Together, we can create a future where well-being, compassion, and respect for our planet are at the core of everything we do.

This journey, which we began some time ago, is incredibly important, and we are thrilled that you can be part of it with us.

Warmest regards,

OUR STRATEGY

From the beginning of this journey, our CSR strategy has been built on three steps: evaluation, improvement, and measuring. These steps are essential for creating meaningful and lasting action, enabling us to set strong objectives that will benefit the planet, our people, and our guests.

Our strategy

THE CSR COMMITTEE

At Clinique La Prairie, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy is determined by our CSR Committee, which includes strategic members of our senior management team. Creating such a committee is a way to integrate CSR into the core of our business.

Our CSR Committee meets monthly to review existing initiatives and develop new projects that align with our mission. Our dedicated CSR specialist, supported by external CSR experts, oversees the management of these initiatives in daily operations through focused working groups. By involving all departments, we ensure that our CSR strategy is not only ambitious but also practical and aligned with the latest sustainability recommendations and the realities on the ground.

We take great pride in this structure, as it reinforces our genuine commitment to CSR principles. By embedding these practices at every level of the organisation, we believe in making a positive impact on society and the environment, fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability throughout Clinique La Prairie.

Organisation chart

“Having always been deeply sensitive to environmental concerns, and recognizing the increasing urgency of the matter, I strongly advocated for the development of a CSR strategy at Clinique La Prairie, spearheading the establishment of the department two years ago.

In addition, I truly believe that finance is intricately linked to the environment, which is why it is crucial to be part of the CSR strategy.”

“Coming from a chemical engineering background and with experience in supply chain management, environmental processes resonate with me. The real challenge at Clinique La Prairie lies in articulating impactful and feasible actions.

By joining the CSR committee, I am committed to ensuring the proper consideration of CSR in our site’s services and processes, helping to provide a framework for initiatives.

Together, let’s drive positive change and make a difference in our community and beyond.”

“In 2018, I dedicated my profession to sustainable development by pursuing environmental studies, focusing on environmental justice.

Joining Clinique La Prairie in 2023 opened a new chapter for me: implementing sustainability in luxury services. It’s been an extraordinary journey. I believe that companies like Clinique La Prairie can make a significant impact and set an example for their stakeholders.

Sustainable development can only be achieved through teamwork, which grows stronger every day within our walls.”

OUR APPROACH TO DECARBONISATION

Clinique La Prairie initiated decarbonisation efforts by carrying out a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions study based on its 2022 activities. This study quantified all activities in terms of CO2e equivalent, enabling the CSR team to assess direct (scope 1) and indirect (scope 2 and 3) emissions.

In response to the study, we set reduction goals with a target to significantly decrease emissions by 2030. In one year, we have already implemented reduction measures and have additional plans to achieve our decarbonisation objectives.

The Greenhouse Gas emission protocol

SCOPE 1-2

SCOPE 3

We are committed to continuing these efforts and to staying on course towards reduction with the help of the Science Based Target Initiatives (SBTI). SBTI support companies in setting longterm, science-based emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science.

For our planet

SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS

Working on improving our building's sustainability is crucial, as it significantly impacts our direct emissions. Our actions are dedicated to energy efficiency, using renewable energy, and reducing energy consumption.

2026 reduction convention

Since 2018, we have decided to implement a process to optimise our energy consumption. Every year, we receive audits by energy specialists to assess our progress. Despite our efforts to reduce energy use each year, our net consumption continues to increase due to new constructions on our site. For example, between 2022 and 2023, electricity consumption increased by 0.7% and thermal consumption by 8.2%. During the same period, our medical center grew by 7% of the total operating area. We are trying to stabilise our consumption despite the expansion of our activities, with numerous initiatives and best practices.

Tracking electrical consumption

In 2023, we initiated a project to monitor our electricity consumption. We believe that understanding the exact amount of electricity each building uses is crucial to reduce overall energy use. Firstly, this allows us to identify the most energy-intensive buildings and target them for reduction efforts. Secondly, monitoring provides detailed data to understand consumption trends and detect any anomalies or waste. Finally, it helps us track the progress of our energy-saving measures and adjust our strategies to achieve our reduction goals more effectively.

Unsurprisingly, 41% of the annual electricity consumption comes from the medical center, due to the care machines and technology required to operate it. The historical building, mainly occupied by administrative services, has a small consumption. The château, housing our guests, accounts for 15%.

The building that houses all our luxury resort services uses 40% of the whole annual consumption. We aim to reduce its share by optimising the electrical management of the spa, pool, therapeutic care center, fitness area, bar, restaurant, reception, and kitchen. We are confident that we can reduce consumption by modernising our lighting system.

Building envelope audit

We conducted a building envelope audit as part of the 2030 renovation strategy, focusing on heating efficiency. This involves assessing exterior components like walls, windows, and insulation to identify heat loss and improve energy efficiency. By understanding these factors, we were able to make targeted improvements to reduce heating costs and enhance sustainability.

For our planet

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Another key aspect of the CSR strategy is to implement circular economy practices wherever possible. From a global perspective, Clinique La Prairie must make this transition to address the crisis of natural resources and the alarming accumulation of waste on the planet.

On our local scale, we track the generation of waste monthly, with about twenty categories identified. This monitoring provides a direct view of our activities and their related impacts which is the base for corrective measures.

The waste with highest environmental costs are medical, chemical, and incinerable waste, which are directly burned. We take action based on four key steps to reduce the proportion of this waste.

“Sustainability is increasingly crucial in our operations. I ensure that new projects are aligned with our sustainability goals and guide my team accordingly. While medical excellence and high standards are our top priorities, we can integrate sustainability in many ways. From technical renovations and new medical techniques to daily nursing and administrative tasks, there is always an opportunity to reduce our impact. A key recent project is the digitalisation of patient records, which significantly reduces paper usage. I am heartened by our staff’s eagerness to continue in this direction, giving me confidence in achieving our CSR goals.”

The 3R steps

How we are implementing the 3R steps into daily work at Clinique La Prairie?

Reduce

Avoid generating waste

» Decrease of single use for F&B items

» Inhousing tap and sparkling water bottles

» Avoiding printing

» Digitalising administrative tasks

» Decrease of employees' food waste

Recycle

Reintroduce material in production ins tead of extracting virgin resources

» Improvement of the medical waste policy for recycling

» Recyling specific plastic items used for medical care

» Implementation of a plastic recycling flow in the kitchen, logistic and surgery block

» Upcycling oil in biofuel and organic waste in compost for Swiss farms

Reuse or Repair

» Donation of reusable laundry or non used items to a local charity (Les Airelles)

» Resale of old medical machines at affordable prices

» Separation of batteries and noble material from single use medical surgery tools

» Donation of unfinished amenities to a local NGO for recycling (Sapocycle)

Who is making circular economy a reality at Clinique La Prairie?

REDUCE & REUSE

Susanna and Antonio are managing food services for the staff, always striving to reduce waste and prioritise higher quality.

In their opinion, increasing staff awareness about not overfilling their plates and creating synergy between guest and staff procurement is essential. They ensure any unused products for our clientele are recovered daily and cooked for our staff. This way, there is less waste in the kitchen, and we can provide our staff with very high-quality products.

“If we reduce food waste on our plates today, we ensure higher quality tomorrow.”

Paderi, Line Chef Antonio Ferrise, Responsible for the Staff

RECYCLE

The operating room inevitably generates a certain amount of waste to uphold the hygiene and excellence standards of Clinique La Prairie.

However, the operating room team, led by Erika , diligently sets aside all recyclable materials (batteries, steel, glass) found in medical instruments.

“I believe that reducing incinerable waste has real economical and sustainable benefits. For this reason, I try to find ways to revalorise noble materials from our waste and increase awareness.”

REDUCE & REUSE

Sophie and her housekeeping team continuously improve their service to customers, making room preparation more responsible. Their goal is to add a sustainable touch while maintaining five-star standards.

Recently, for example, the team installed potted plants to replace the imported flowers that the hotel previously ordered weekly.

“Sustainability, to my team and me, means both a higher quality of service and an improvement of efficiency.”

RECYCLE & REDUCE

Francisco manages orders and deliveries, and oversees the clinic’s stock. He believes effective inventory management is crucial for sustainability and prioritises grouped deliveries.

While plastic usage is decreasing, there’s still room for further reduction, requiring careful coordination with suppliers to reduce plastic packaging in deliveries. This is the commitment he and his team are dedicated to.

Daily waste mainly consists of cardboard and plastic, with cardboard reused or recycled and plastic reduced and sorted for recycling.

“If we minimize our stock as much as possible, we have a better overview of what we have and we reduce the risk of waste”.

For our planet

RESPONSIBLE PROCUREMENT

Purchase strategy

Audit & ranking Responsible Procurement Policy & targets per category New supplies

Aware of the significance of purchasing in terms of quality, sustainability, and safety, we are committed to increasing and incorporating sustainable criteria into our procurement processes. This ambition is embedded in our Supplier's Code of Conduct.

To achieve our ambition for 2026, we believe that the first step is to conduct a product audit for each category of purchase at Clinique La Prairie. In this audit, we aim to identify the environmental impact of our products from a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) perspective. By doing so, we will provide more transparency in our purchases and highlight opportunities for improvement in terms of sustainability.

Purchase categories

“Our department has a significant impact on Clinique La Prairie’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) responsibility. By selecting suppliers and partners who prioritize these aspects, we integrate ESG criteria into procurement decisions to promote responsible supply chains and strengthen our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

Our journey began in 2023, drawing insights from similar businesses like clinics and luxury hotels. This inspired the development of our responsible procurement policy. By 2026, every department in our clinic will adhere to this policy.

I am excited to continue this new phase of our journey by integrating sustainability into our work as effectively as possible. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously, understanding that every action we take today shapes the world of tomorrow. I am confident that together, we can reach even greater heights and create a lasting positive impact for our patients, our community, and our planet.”

PROVIDING LOCAL RICE SOURCED FROM THE SWISS ALPS FOR OUR GUESTS

We’re committed to supporting local farmers whenever possible. For example, we source rice grown in the Swiss Alps called Premier Riz du Vully. These innovative farmers not only produce high-quality goods but also contribute to boosting Swiss biodiversity by creating wetland areas that attract diverse wildlife. Moreover, this allows us to access locally-sourced rice, fostering sustainability and community connections.

At Clinique La Prairie, our social approach is structured around two core areas: our colleagues and our community.

For our people

SAFETY AT WORK

High health standards in the workplace is our priority ! According to us, workplace wellbeing encompasses three different aspects: prevention of illnesses, physical health related to job requirements, and the mental health of employees.

Given the strong growth of our business, and consequently, our site, we have continuously expanded our teams over the past twenty years. In the face of this expansion, we remain committed to ensuring the health and well-being of our employees, and we strive to strengthen our initiatives to maintain our high health standards in the workplace.

“Our responsibility and our mission cannot be complete without looking with a particular attention to the wellbeing of our teams. We are committed to implementing a comprehensive health program for all our employees.

In addition to my role in preventing infection, I am committed to ensuring that the staff in every department feel well, both mentally and physically. To achieve this, it’s extremely important that our teams are trained and informed of whom to contact in the event of a problem.

Our teams work hard for our patients all year round. So we want to make sure that they feel well looked after too, and that we are listening to them to improve their working conditions and safeguard their health. I’m delighted to be involved in this important mission, because I know that the well-being of our teams is an important factor in the quality of the services we provide to our guests and patients.”

Young recruits benefit from holistic training immersed in luxury expertise. We are happy to support young people and contribute to their professional takeoff.

Sustainability assessment in collaboration with our local university

We had the opportunity to be part of a collaborative project with HEC Lausanne. Five students on a master’s degree came to visit us and worked during one semester on a sustainability assessment focusing on the hospitality and SPA activies. This analysis was made with a B Impact Assessment framework, which is a management tool coming from the B Corporation certification.

From data collection to result presentation, both sides learned a lot. This assessment helped to construct this very report. We value their critical thinking and thought-provoking analysis.

RESPONSIBLE INNOVATION

Science & innovation, 0ver 90 years’ expertise in life science

Clinique La Prairie stands out for its scientific approach to innovation. We are indeed pioneers in the field of preventive medicine and longevity. We are also regularly advised by our prestigious Scientific Committee that ensures that our services are science-based and that our technologies are cutting-edge.

Sustainability is a key component of innovation. Especially in the field of longevity, it is essential to work with responsible products and partners. Working on innovation and new technologies means an increasing awareness of the importance of upcycling and seeking to maximise the value of used materials. The Innovation team strives to create as many synergies as possible with the local biomedical start-up ecosystem.

“Coming from a psychology background, I earned a PhD in neuroscience in 2014. Two years ago, I joined Clinique La Prairie’s Innovation team, where I am committed to discovering sustainable, science-based technologies and to fostering a culture of continuous learning. It is our department’s duty to maintain environmental awareness. Biodiversity stress, climate change, acidification, and other environmental perturbations are key components of human health. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for us to increase our awareness and recognise the effects of the exposome on our health and longevity. Including these notions in our work is the first step toward cultivating a culture that is respectful and caring towards our planet.”

Paying attention to raw materials

One of our core pillars is nutrition. The Innovation team is deeply focused on developing new lines of food supplements for longevity, paying close attention to the quality of ingredients that are chosen. In fact, our team ensures that any new product is developed using methods that are nonpollutant while at the same time seeking to optimise its nutraceutical benefits.

Mounting studies suggest that food diets that maximize the intake of vegetal proteins and avoid red meat are optimal for longevity. By adopting nutrition patterns that reduce the consumption of animal proteins, we can significantly decrease the carbon footprint and biodiversity impact of our food on the planet.

Prioritising noninvasive technologies

Our Innovation team is constantly on the lookout for cuttingedge technologies that provide the best assessments and treatments for longevity. We prioritise devices and machines that are non-invasive, smart, energy-efficient, and that generate minimal waste.

For instance, the team is exploring the incorporation of reusable continuous monitoring devices to track the health of our guests in a non-invasive way and to reduce nonrecyclable waste. This example highlights our team’s daily challenge: discovering new technologies that minimise waste, consume less energy, and adhere to the highest luxury, medical and hygiene standards.

Working locally and closely

Since Clinique La Prairie has its origin in Switzerland, many of our collaborations are indeed Swiss partners. To boost our local economy, we prioritise working with local labs and establishing partnerships within the Swiss biomedical ecosystem. For example, we have established very exciting partnerships with local biomedical start-ups that give us access to frontier diagnostics on longevity.
