Ollie is Home! When Villager Suna Hall’s husband Sam Crocker and their son Ollie were involved in an horrific accident, The Village gathered together to say prayers and send well wishes to the family. Ollie sustained traumatic head injury but – he survived and after 25 days at Red Cross Children’s Hospital, he is thriving at home. Ollie continues to amaze his family with his tenacity and commitment to his rehabilitation. Suna has shared her gratitude to each and every one of you who commented and sent love. For Women By Women

THIS TAKES THE CAKE Here’s a diet we can get behind. Thank you Laura Folley for the recipe for this classic Victoria Sponge that just reminds us of simpler times.

For the cake:

225g salted but ter, softened (only real but ter will do!) 225g caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 medium eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence For the filling:

100g icing sugar 50g salted but ter, softened 4 tbsp strawberry or raspberry jam ½ tsp vanilla essence Method: Line 2 x 20 cm shallow cake tins with greaseproof paper and preheat the oven to 180°C/ 350°F. Beat the sugar and butter together until fluffy. Beat in 2 eggs and about half the flour, then the other 2 eggs and the rest of the flour. Add the vanilla essence. Divide between the tins and bake for 25 minutes. Check with a skewer (it should come out clean) or press lightly with your

finger – it should spring back if it’s cooked. Leave to cool in the pans for around 5 minutes and then turn onto a cooling rack. To make the buttercream: put softened butter into a bowl and sift the icing sugar over it and slowly mix it together. Add a little boiling water (about 1 tbsp) to help to bring it together and keep mixing until it has the consistency of cream cheese. When the sponges are cold, put the bottom layer on a plate and spread it with the jam. Then, if you’re brave, hold the top layer upside down in your hand and spread it with the butter cream and then place it on top of the bottom layer. (If your hands aren’t big enough, put the top layer upside down onto a plate, spread the buttercream and use the plate to flip it over onto the bottom layer). Finally, sprinkle some icing sugar through a sieve and scatter across the top. Eat with a freshly-brewed cup of tea! 04

Money Talk

It’s been a tricky time for so many of us – thankfully The Village is a mine of really useful financial information 1 Have a plan. Being disorganised costs you money 2 Spend less than you earn. Simple, but not always easy! This is the basis of your financial security. 3 Focus on fulfilment. In your work and life. 4 Save whatever you can, whenever you can. You need 20 times your annual income for your retirement. 5 Invest for longterm growth. That means a globally well-diversified portfolio. 6 Don’t get distracted by what others say and do. Stick to your plan, while reviewing it regularly to stay on track. For more sound financial advice, click here.

UTI-X is an essential for those leg crossing moments Did you know that UTI’s are one of the most common infections around? And while they’re uncomfortable and can cause pain, they can be effectively treated and prevented.

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT A UTI

06

CARERS.

the village.

RELIEF WORKER

• No, they’re not caused by sex or being ‘dirty’, but sexual (and sporting) activity and a good dose of dehydration can bring one on. • Urinating after sex is always a good idea – and changing out of active wear after exercise is advised too. • Cranberries contain A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), that interfere with bacteria’s ability to adhere the bladder wall. Regular intake of UTI-X Maintenance can help to prevent UTI’s. • While it’s common in teens, peri-menopausal and menopausal women can also suffer from UTI’s. • A healthy urinary tract environment can help prevent further UTI’s – making UTI-X Advanced and UTI-X Maintenance part of your regular healthcare routine is a step towards great health.

ANYONE ELSE NOTICED THESE 3?

Black Lives Matter

We love the banter between these three (wicked) Loebenberg sisters – Tertia, Melanie and Nina. Pure entertainment!

A letter from Vanessa

A word about some of the most painful, heartsore and important moments on The Village, this month. While it is hard to discuss the hurt, anger and distance which separates us, we all, I think, dream of making our communities better, safer places for ALL of our families. To achieve this dream I know we absolutely must have those difficult conversations. We have to find a way to understand each other and find a common path. Together, we all need to take brave, healthy steps towards a future, where all our children are treated equally and given equal opportunities. We can and must start, right here - in this community. Discussions that acknowledge, apologise for and lance the boils of racism and generational pain are crucial: We need to find a way to stop, for once, the hurt too many children and parents still experience. We need urgently to foster a culture of true respect to guarantee a space of safety for our POC Villagers so we can ALL flush out the unfairness and cruelty their families still experience. This is of crucial importance to this group. We have had many hard conversations in the past few weeks and commit to having more, I hope most sincerely with open hearts and open minds.

Tertia: “Don’t tell my siblings, but I am definitely my mother’s fave child. She told me so.”

Nina: “I’m Cinderella, you two are the evil step sisters!”

Melanie: “I am the WINNA!! …My revenge for years of abuse.”

Chic mama’s will distribute your clothes

No matter how open-minded, socially conscious, anti-racist I think I am, I still have old, learned hidden biases that I need to examine. it is my responsibility to check myself daily for stereotypes, prejudice and, ultimately, discrimination. 07

GROWING MEN

There’s been a lot of conversation about how we can teach our boys to be better men – thank you, Villagers for your words of wisdom and the sharing of resources. These books came recommended: Available as a Kindle read, click here Fellow Villager Megan de Beyer’s book How to Raise a Man is also getting great reviews. R199, Takealot

Resident beauty expert Sylvie Hurford has been there and can help – her advice for anyone suffering from Alopecia. • DON’T avoid washing your hair and drying it thoroughly – get the fallout over and done with, and it feels better • Cut it if possible into a shorter style, this always seemed to help • Go to your dermatologist and ask for the following things: - A course of oral cortisone (5-7 days) to stop the inflammation in its tracks - Intrascalpal steroid injections into the patches - A script for 5% minoxidil which you’ll apply topically • DON’T WAIT I have halted the process numerous times.
