i, I’m George Hance the MD of Positive Learning, Active Youth or Play as everyone calls it. I started this business as a way to get fully qualified teachers into primary schools to deliver high quality curriculum time PE lessons and out of hours provision. A lot of companies use coaches to deliver curriculum time lessons, in our experience this doesn’t usually work, as the difference between coaching and teaching is huge. Our aim is to not only deliver great, exciting and meaningful PE lessons to the children we teach but it is also to get them active, healthy and to enjoy physical activity in anyway they can. If you find something that a child loves to do and keep them engaged and motivated to do it, they will continue this much later on in life. Therefore, helping them lead a more active and healthy adulthood. We also promote this with our after school provision and our school holiday provision. We aren’t just a conventional childcare provider. is my great belief that any of the children that PLAY come into contact with firmly understand this. I look forward to writing for Rock and Candy and offering some insight into the world of Primary school PE and sport and the major benefits doing it correctly can have! www.plaype.co.uk George@plaype.co.uk 07595 947920

The environment is sensory controlled, thereby reducing our stress hormones, alleviating pain and tension and stimulating the release of beneficial endorphins, providing rejuvenation of mental and physical conditions.

Binky did explain I could float with an LED light under my body and the starry ceiling, or opt for complete darkness. Because I’m used to meditation, I opted for a complete black out. You lose concept of time, but I’m guessing it took about 20 minutes for me to get used to the sensation and let go. Soft meditation music plays in the background which I found helped me along my way to

Cocoon really is a lovely place to spend some time anyway. The shop has so many interesting items to peruse whilst you wait for your session to start.

button and that was it! I was ready to float!

The fabulous Binky, who manages the Floatation section is so warm and welcoming. You immediately feel comfortable and put at ease as you embark on this new experience. I had to sign a quick form, then I was led downstairs to the Floatation area. Straight away it felt calming and inviting. It was hard to believe that we were metres from the bustling streets of Gloucester Terrace. It was extremely tranquil. Next I was shown the float room I would be using. I would be in the Cabin Tank as opposed to the egg cocoon. The Cabin Tank is larger in size, and recommended for beginners. I was given full instruction of what to do; Shower well, ear plugs provided, shown the emergency

Regular floating strengthens the immune system making the body more resilient.

The hour goes a lot quicker than you think. With a gentle light flicker from Binky, that’s your cue to leave this awesome womb like environment and slowly readjust back to reality! The Epson salts need to be throughly washed out of your hair and from your body, so you have another shower. Hairdryers, face wipes are supplied. Then begrudgingly it’s time to leave and go back into the real world. Not without a huge hug goodbye from Binky. I really would recommend this to anyone needing a stress reliever. It’s also beneficial for Fibromyalgia, PTSD, smoking cessation, depression, back pain, MS to name a few.

I

’ve been wanting to try a floatation tank experience for a while now. Being a busy mum, like many of us, I carry a fair amount of stress within my body and sometimes in my mind, so I jumped at the chance to give this a go.

deep relaxation. When I meditate at home, I imagine I’m floating on the sea, so this really made my experience a great one. Everyone has a different experience, some fall asleep, some use it as a time to just chill, some astral travel. I floated to the end of the horizon, then dropped off the edge and was floating through space. Each time a worry came into my head, I pushed it away. At this point I couldn’t feel where my body ended and the water began. The water temperature inside the tank is body temperature, so it really helps to feel weightless, and it felt amazing.

With the minimum effort, floaters can reach the state of meditation that it takes Zen monks 25 years to achieve. Regular floating also strengthens the immune system making the body more resilient. cocoonhealthcare.co.uk 20-22 Gloucester Place, BN1 4AA, 01273 686882 Mon-Sat 7.30 am til 9pm Sunday 9am til 5pm

xxxxxx | YOGA PRINCIPLES: These pieces of wisdom are considered the major foundations of the yogic lifestyle. Supporting character development, respect for one’s self and others, and healthy living as we grow up.

Yoga principle 1: practicing peace Surround yourself with love and kindness. Be gentle in your thoughts and actions. Be respectful. Do not harm anyone or anything. Practice tolerance.

children

love yoga Have been very busy preparing for Christmas with lots of balance postures over the last few weeks...

V

rikasana - The Tree Pose is one of my favourite postures as it helps to focus and calm the children I teach, helping to build their self confidence. When starting our Tree posture I make it clear to the children that they need to put on their “focus face” which will enable them to stand as still as statues. When we put our focus face on we are concentrating / gazing softly just ahead of us. “When the breath is steady the mind will be calm”... The importance of remaining quiet really helps the children to remain balanced whilst in the posture. The benefits of tree pose are: Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and spine. • Stretches the groins and inner thighs, chest and shoulders. • Improves sense of balance. • Relieves sciatica and reduces flat feet. I have had the privilege of teaching some lovely children at Little Earthworms for the last 18 month. Cassie James, @cassieyogajames 07508 325 374

Yoga principle 2: be honest Be truthful in your actions, thoughts and voice. Tell the truth. Be yourself. Be true to you. Yoga principle 3: be generous Be generous. Share. Don’t take what isn’t yours. Yoga principle 4: practice moderation Remember to do all things in moderation. Practice self control. Yoga principle 5: be clean Take care of yourself, body and mind. Take care of your surroundings, community and earth. Yoga principle 6: be content Be content with yourself. Celebrate your uniqueness. Maintain a positive outlook. Be grateful. Yoga principle 7: work hard Be disciplined. Always try your best. Finish what you start. Persevere. Don’t give up! Yoga principle 8: have alone time Be reflective. Spend time with yourself. Know yourself. Take the time to be quiet and still. Yoga principle 9: believe in something bigger Dream big! Believe in yourself. Have faith. Trust yourself. You can achieve anything you put your mind to.

C

hildren’s lives could be changing at Brighton’s largest yoga studio, thanks to one very proud new father.

Dynamic Hot Yoga is now offering kids yoga sessions each week, in its own purpose-built studio, complete with oak-sprung dance floor. Owner Aftab Miah says that he wants to get children away from their smartphones and tablets: “too many children are stuck in the digital world. My goal is bringing them into their mind and body consciousness.” The inspiration for the new sessions came from another job that Aftab has recently been blessed with - fatherhood. “As soon as my wife was pregnant, I had this idea in my head,” he says. The studio is already somewhat of a family affair, he continues: “all my family come here. My mum comes to the women’s only class, my brother is a Director, and my wife will be involved in the business when she is off maternity leave.” The new children’s yoga instructor, Rachel Hatton, has actually practiced yoga at the studio with her children as a client. It was through getting to know the team at Dynamic Hot Yoga whilst spending time there as a customer that she was invited to join them.

Hardly surprising then, that newborn son Lamaan will be welcomed into the fold in a few years. “I want him to grow up in the business,” says Aftab proudly. The children’s classes - which have been running since September - are taught by qualified yoga teacher Rachel Hatton. There are two classes running each week, one for ages 4 - 8 and the other for ages 8 - 13. The classes involve a Hathaway-style yoga, with lots of “fun and games” and focus on flexibility and discipline. Aftab is dedicated to giving children a solid grounding in yoga and all the benefits he believes it entails. “We need to work on the future - to work on the future you need to work on the younger generation. We’re trying to start a really positive ethos of respecting nature and wildlife... the kids will take that ethos out of the class, into their heads and back home with them.”

keeping in shape

I

over the festive season

t’s winter and time to start thinking about indoor activities that fit into your daily routine. Clubbercise is the ‘new zumba’ and it’s a great way of burning calories in a relatively short space of time. High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT as its commonly known, are ideal classes for quick calorie burning. Or... if classes are not your thing, Freedom Leisure offer 5 free 1-21 sessions with an instructor when you take out one of their memberships, it’s a great place to start as the fitness teams will not only help get you set up with a personal exercise programme, they’re more

than happy to keep updating it for you as you progress through your training journey. Don’t be afraid to try something new, there’s nothing better than changing things up from time to time to keep your body and mind challenged. Keeping in shape doesn’t always come easy and more often than not, it’s hard work. My advice would be to do what you can, when you can. Remember, looking after your health and wellbeing will go a long way in keeping your energy levels stable and giving you that much needed boost when you need it.

Aroe, prolific graffiti artist tells Rock and Candy... The idea for the skate park came about from a discussion we had regarding how good the classic skateboard graphics and stickers were and why they hadn’t been more heavily incorporated into a painting. We used the Powell Peralta skull, the Caballero Dragon, the Mark Gonzales prints and the Tom Penney amongst many other images. The hove lagoon wall had a fairly loose but definitely more of a brief than the skate park section. The letters had to be legible from the kingsway and the fill ins had to be themed either locally or of a maritime nature with the colours all fitting into a specific palette.

E x ce l l e n t Me n u F a m i ly D i n i n g Divino Wine Bar Situated on Hove's bustling Church Road is a luxurious multipurpose venue designed to eat, drink and dance in! Staying true to original form of days gone by, the basement boasts a luxury club space perfect for private parties and post dinner debauchery. Back upstairs it is decadently decorated with an immaculate bar and elegant dining space. I visited Divino on a 'childfree' evening for a dinner date. After a hot day, we decided to dine outside and were pleased to see that the delightful decoration continued into the large garden with beautiful flower boxes and ambient lighting. They offer a hearty Italian menu here and though spoilt for choice we chose to start with Tricolore Salad (£6.95) and Scallops with Bacon (£8.95) and for our mains Pumpkin Ravioli Courgette and Prawns in Saffron Sauce (£8.95) and Grilled Rib Eye Steak served with Chips (£15.95) with a few large glasses of Malbec to wash it

all down (£8.25) and a bespoke non-alcoholic cocktail made by dedicated manager Francesco. Pleasingly, when our food arrived it was as well presented as our surroundings, beautifully cooked, the plentiful portion of seared scallops were wrapped in bacon and served with figs which complimented them wonderfully. My partner’s salad was well balanced and presented with flair and originality. Our mains followed in hot pursuit and did not disappoint. The prawns were delicious, the pasta fresh and silky with subtle hints of saffron delicately bringing the dish together. The steak cooked to order, was tasty and the chips perfectly seasoned with crispy skins provided all the comfort one expects with this favour combination. With hospitable management at the heart of service and its opulent vibe Divino’s is the perfect place for a memorable date night.

The Jetty

food reviews

I went to the jetty with my dad. It was really lovely, I ate loads of seafood. Me and my dad were so hungry we Jake shared the sea- aged 10 food platter. The drink selection was amazing! I had a raspberry mock fail, of course my dad had a beer! The restaurent layout was amazing, my favourite part was that you could watch all the chefs cooking the yummy food! Last but not least (my favourite course) the dessert! Out of all the delicious options I chose the chocolate brownie with a rasberry topping... It was absolutely out of this world!!

Aberdeen Steak House

The Aberdeen Steak House is a lovely restaurant with lots of delicious foods such as pizza, steak Kita and burgers. aged 8 I have tried the pizza, the chips, the steak and the burgers. They are all delicious with amazing flavours. I would recommend this place to families and friends together, if you like big foods and delicious flavours you would love the Aberdeen Steak House. The owner known as Vinny is really nice and friendly and he’s really good at making lots of different foods – mostly pizza.

I really enjoyed the jetty and had such a lovely time with my dad. The staff made us feel really welcome and I loved being so near the seafront!

My favourite is the pizza because it’s nice and big with nice flavours. So visit The Aberdeen Steak house and I guarantee you’ll enjoy it.

Miller and Carter

I’ve always been a fan of the Miller and Carter. So when I found out that there was one opening right on Johnny our doorstep aged 15 in Brighton I was over the moon! As its so much easier to get there and nearer! Steak is one of my most favourite foods and one of the reasons is because it’s full of protein which is good for me Especially because I play a lot of football and do loads of exercise! I got a ribeye steak and my mum got a fillet steak - we both enjoyed them very much and they were cooked to perfection! We got to choose our salads, sauces and the choice of chips or jacket potato. I chose chips and they tasted amazing!! The steak was so juicy and succulent and went so perfectly with my peppercorn sauce! I could eat it over and over again! The staff were really helpful. For dessert I went for the brownie which was so delicious! I had such a lovely time with my mum and would definitely go again!

the better half As recommended by staff who I must point out are serious about exceptional service, to accompany our meals we had locally brewed cider infused with black cherry produced by SeaCider. We did not have to wait long for our generously portioned plates to arrive and soon our table fell magically silent as we wolfed down our wonderful roasts. For our ‘Sweeter Half’ we selected Vanilla Crème brulee with summer fruit compote (£5.50) and a selection of ice cream from Boho Gelato (£4.00). No doubt about it, family friendly and with warm welcoming staff, The Better Half is serving seriously good food. by Ellie Telebian

t comes as no surprise that The Better Half has reached the final of The Great British Pub Awards 2016 in the category of Best Newcomer. Every inch of this pub has been lovingly restored to create something very distinctive in the heart of Hove. Stylishly decorated in intricate detail with an enviable tiled bar and oozing comfort, on the Sunday that I visited it was bursting with ravenous customers all keen to devour a delightful roast. Whilst tempted by the intimate booths and beautiful earthy tones throughout the pub we opted to sit outside to accommodate our small entourage of toddlers. After perusing the menu we chose Roasted Rosemary & Garlic Leg of Lamb (£13.95), Lemon & Thyme Pot Roast Chicken (12.95), Mix Nut & Vegetable Loaf (v) (£10.95) and a children’s portion of the chicken (£7.95) all served with perfectly cooked roast potatoes, honey roasted carrots & parsnips, roasted beetroot, greens, squash & swede mash, broccoli f lorets, a lovely Yorkshire pudding and oodles of moreish gravy.

breath of fresh air to Brighton & Hove’s café scene, Kiki’s radiates cool. Adorned with subtle splashes of colour its vibrancy is cleverly subtle, a welcoming space both light and airy it is enriched with chic nods to owner Fi’s love of travelling.

Butty (£5.00). My plate arrives swiftly packed with mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, beans, eggs and avocado – all served on sourdough toast.

This is an oasis in Hove – my usually ‘highly spirited’ four year old is almost utterly still, mesmerised by the beautiful portraits of Bob Marley and Louis Armstrong. The inviting menu is diverse yet accessible, celebrating culture from Fi’s world travels. For our food choices we stay somewhat traditional, choosing Kiki’s Healthier Breakfast (£7.50) and an Egg and Bacon

To finish we indulged in Boho Gelato’s choc banana peanut crisp and their banana and custard flavoured ice creams, leaving utterly satisfied. Kiki’s celebrates and welcomes collaborative working space, which Fi currently uses to sell flowers, Indian clothing and play host to a pop up mac and cheese menu. Every issue we will feature a Brighton and Hove child that has gone that extra mile to achieve

Tiana started playing tennis at 5 years old, we could never have imagined it would become her life. From the very start Tiana loved the game, the challenge, the competition. She showed a natural talent and with excellent training and encouragement, progressing fast, winning her first county tournament at 6 years old. She dedicated more time to her training and added fitness to her schedule, travelling the country for tournaments. A great deal of commitment for the whole family. She won her first national title at 10 and then again at 12, now travelling regularly to the NTC in London for national training camps. Again the workload increased, but she still loved it and was then selected to play for Great Britain - her proudest moment, and she was now travelling Europe to play tournaments. At 13 Tiana is ranked no 1 in the county for both 14s and 16s and ranked 8th in the UK. These amazing results are through hard work and dedication of both her and her coaches. It really is a team effort - Ben and Martin from Pavilion and Avenue Tennis club are outstanding, as is her fitness coach Jack from JRL studios. They are dedicated and passionate about her potential, all believing she can make it.

Highlights for 2016 have to be reaching the final in the HSBC Road to Wimbledon at just 13, winning her first Tennis Europe in both singles and doubles and being awarded outstanding junior player by Tennis Sussex. Her goal is by January 2017, to be ranked in the top 20 in Europe. Tiana now trains 6 days a week, 3 hours a day, combining tennis and fitness. Combined with school work it’s a gruelling schedule. Her equipment is all sponsored by Wilson, for which we are incredibly grateful. However Tiana needs a local business to come on board, sponsor her, and be part of this amazing journey, she is dedicating her life to. She wants it to be a local company as being Brighton born and bred, she’d like to keep it close to her roots. If any company can see the potential and would like to help please contact Rock and Candy. To nominate an inspirational child contact liz@rockandcandy.co.uk

mumtrepreneur megan talks to R+C about her fab business

H

ove based mumtreprenuer Megan Horscraft, founder of Tigerclub Bambino, first started her business at the tender age of 19. After studying buying and merchandising at The Fashion Retail Academy and working as a visual merchandiser at Victoria’s Secret, Bond Street Megan set to work creating a brand of her own. Taking all the skills and knowledge she acquired along the way, she started her own brand Tigerclub which consisted of hand embellished fashion turbans. She created these solely for herself and friends to wear around London to fashion parties and events. After receiving a lot of positive feedback and personal orders she decided to start selling them via Depop, which resulted in her landing her own concession in Fenwick’s on Bond Street, after being contacted by their accessories buyer. As business started to grow, Megan became pregnant and in turn resulted in her moving back to her hometown

Brighton, where she now lives with her boyfriend and eight month old daughter Suki. Conscious of her need to provide for the family, and unwilling to sacrifice quality time she would never get back with her daughter, Megan decided to channel her skills into a new area that she felt passionate about, children’s homeware and accessories. Tigerclub Bambino was born. Finding time where she could, Megan built her business around her day to day mum routine whether it was between day or night feeds, she would be sourcing for her collection and creating spreadsheets. With the little savings she had left she decided to invest into a small collection of unique Pinterest worthy accessories. This came naturally after nesting and sourcing toys and accessories for her own daughter Suki. Turning the spare room into a makeshift office/ warehouse Megan works from home, constantly updating her self built website, social media and shooting new products.

Business Pulse Growth is a big concern for small businesses. It is something that many small business owners find hard to achieve. Putting a detailed business strategy in place is a vital first step towards growth. But not enough small business owners today create – or maintain - a detailed plan. It is essential, and can often be used as a vital sanity check. One of the biggest barriers to small business growth is an inability to take time out to work on - not just in - their business. Small business owners do not regularly set aside time to work on their business strategy. Not having enough time to strategise is considered a bigger barrier even than the current economic environ-

ment to growth. Many small business owners say that not having the time to step back from the day to day running of their business to focus on longerterm strategy, is a barrier to growth. One of the best ways to create effective strategies – and, vitally, to ensure you take the necessary time out to do so - is to take professional advice. Please take some time to read what some of my customers say about me…

mums that boss

ere is where I share my story to find out more about what Mums That Boss is. I’m the mummy of two beautiful boys. Previously, for eleven years, I had my own business as a nail technician. I’ve always had a very good work ethic, being reliable; wanting more from life, so was willing to work for it. After having my first son I had a pretty serious car accident whilst out working. I was mobile so always living/ driving around in my car. The accident left me with a nasty neck/ shoulder pain but I couldn’t afford to have more than a month off as if I didn’t work I wouldn’t get paid. With a flat to run and my son I had to return to work far too soon. I spent around £200 a month on treatments to make me just comfortable enough to struggle through working 3-4 days a week. I was also putting my son into nursery three full days a week to be able to work. I was looking for another way to make an income – but what?

I had worked for myself for eleven years, thinking I had freedom but how wrong was I. During my time struggling working I fell pregnant with my second son. After having him I didn’t want to back out doing my nail tech job. I needed to loose three stone of baby weight. I kept seeing products being posted on social media and just thought, why not? So I started my new healthy eating journey which changed so much about me. Previously my lifestyle and relationship with food was so bad that I suffered with horrific headaches thinking, at the time, that I had something seriously wrong with me. It was all just caused by my terrible/poor diet. So now headache free, three stone gone forever, I’m now on a mission to inspire and help other mummys and families gain health and wealth. I’m a true believer that when women come together we can make amazing things happen.

I started my business at the beginning of my new healthy lifestyle journey. I just thought “what do I have to lose” and invested the very small fee of £50 to buy my own franchise that has now absolutely turned my little life upside down; gaining time and financial freedom. I’m now a six figure earner in just three short years from starting my part-time business, working from my mobile phone. JUST SAY YES!

R+C talks to

Hanna Neter of Juice Radio about juggling being a radio presenter and a mummy

I

work on the Morning Show at Brighton’s Juice 107.2 and had my son Rufus almost two years ago. I think my job was quite good training for the exhaustion that comes with having a newborn. Getting up at 3am didn’t seem alien; that part didn’t phase me at all! Working AND having a baby has been really hard at times. I definitely couldn’t have done it without the help and support of my family who help out with childcare from a ridiculous hour in the morning. A typical day for me starts at 3.45am-I get up have a shower and stuff a towel under the bathroom door to try to not wake Roo up. I’m on the road by 4.30am and in the office by 5am looking at what’s happened over night and prepping for the show which then goes on

air across Brighton and Hove until 11am. After that’s it’s a catch up with the other presenters, preparing for the following day, interviews and meetings. It is really varied- some days I’ll go out to an event that is on or end up in strange situations like back in bed interviewing a B&B owner about winning a prize! Then I leave the office around 1pm and head home or to collect Rufus from nursery. I might be shattered but I feel incredibly lucky to be able to work full-time and have every afternoon with my little boy. We’ll meet friends, go to a soft play, park or beach usually. I think this time in life is manic for anyone, whether they are a stay at home parent or working full-time. I feel like I run from one place to

ROCK + CANDY DEC ‘16 - FEB ‘17 | ROCKANDCANDY.CO.UK | PAGE 32

the next and when one ball drops, it does all come tumbling down!Sometimes I fool myself into thinking a weeknight night out will be fun. Which it is. But the rest of the week isn’t because I don’t have a chance to catch up on sleep! I never realised how incredible mums are until I became one. I remember seeing other mums in the first few weeks after Roo’s birth and wanting to go up to them and hug them and tell them they were AMAZING for birthing and surviving those newborn days! It is really hard but the best thing I’ve ever done and we are all just doing our best aren’t we? “

mum’s the word

A

by Samantha Harman

s lone parent to a 12 year old boy, I’m often asked by people how I cope. The answer to said question? I just get on with it. My son and I have been living alone since he was three years old and while we’ve faced some insurmountable challenges, this has only served to make us closer. I’m proud to say that we have a bond to rival Siamese twins. Being in a stable relationship and co-parenting your child with another person you respect is preferable to going it alone, but rather than subject my son to growing up observing a dysfunctional situation, I made the difficult decision to fly solo. Do I have any regrets about this? Not really. I actually think certain aspects of our situation are a lot easier – for example, there is no one to undermine my authority, my word (teenage hormones allowing) is final. Also, there are no more clashes over parenting styles; my son receives one

clear message, as opposed to two conflicting ones. The place I live in helps too. One of the things I love about being in Brighton is its enduring diversity. Obviously a lot of traditional, nuclear families exist here, but there’s also an abundance of other family models. From single parents to same sex and transgender parents, I enjoy the fact that our city embraces the unconventional. I’ve never felt stereotyped for my life choice. I realise we aren’t living in the 1950s anymore and that single parent families are commonplace within our society, but I’m guessing that certain middle England towns may be slightly more judgemental than we are here. I am ridiculously proud of my boy, who is almost taller than me now. He isn’t perfect and the teenage years are looming ominously on the horizon. But what I have done thus far is to raise a young man who loves and respects me. He is kind hearted, fierce-

ly loyal, has an enquiring mind and is an incredibly funny and charming individual, who can hold his own in any social situation. He talks to me about everything; we actually had a conversation about the perils of pornography recently, but that’s a story for another time! My mum recently bought me a mug with the words: ‘I’m a single parent, what’s your super power’ emblazoned across it, perhaps there’s some truth in that?

Diary of a wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Review by Oskar Zak (age 10)

Reviewed by Ashleigh Reeves (age 10)

High in the Alps, death waits for Alex Rider. Alex the superspy is back in a second explosive book. I love this book because it makes you want to read on and on and makes you feel like you’re really there. It is an incredibly action-packed book and is suitable for kids aged 8 to 12. It is also full of witty humour, which makes you laugh as you read. I would recommend this book to everyone. Read it yourself to find out if Alex will discover the deadly secret before it’s too late!

This book is about a young boy called Greg Heffley who tires his best to be popular at school, but this always ends in disaster! This book is very funny and made me laugh a lot. I have loved reading all the books in this fantastic series and I get so engrossed in them that I feel like I am actually there. This book would be good for children of all ages (including parents). I have loved reading it at school, at bed time and in my spare time. It is packed with fun! I rate it 5 stars!

The Conservatory, Hove

O

Brighton and Hove’s best hidden gem

n The Drive in Hove there is, perhaps, the most unusual interior decoration shop in Brighton and Hove (perhaps even in the South of England). As dusk falls, you are immediately struck by the glow of the many chandeliers shining through the windows of this former Victorian conservatory building. Apart from the extensive range of reproduction Italian Murano glass chandeliers, there is a vast array of differing styles of ceiling lights; some with matching wall-lights. Pop in and see the large range of French Empire-style `bag` chandeliers; all rewired and ready to go!

Then we come to the Flemish furniture! Two and three door ` knock-down wardrobes, which date from around 1900 -1920 , and are sourced from Holland and Belgium. These come in oak, mahogany or walnut and can be waxed or painted `shabby-chic` to your specifications. Bombe–front chests of drawers, in various colours are available - some are even covered with animal print fabric! Display cabinets, desks etc can all be found here, all reflected in the vast selection of some of the largest heavy gilt frame mirrors I have ever seen. With the festive season approaching, the garden area is given up to top quality Christmas trees; both Nordmans and Spruces! In Spring, the small garden area is crammed with a selection of tubular steel gazebos and arches, along with dining sets, fountains and cast-iron urns. Then, when you turn around, you are aware of a life-size fibreglass cow looking at you! Apparently, anything from a six foot Elvis to a seventeen foot giraffe is available to order even a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex! As the owner, Mick , says “a quirky eclectic range of furniture and artefacts for the house and garden!”And even that description does not do this shop justice!

Would You Like to Make a Real Difference

TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD Why not become a foster carer for Brighton & Hove City council? What Is A Foster Carer?

F

oster carers provide a safe, stable, nurturing home where a child or young person can live whilst their own family is unable to look after them.

Children come into foster care for many reasons. It may be because of a family illness, family breakdown or problems at home. Brighton & Hove City council needs to recruit more foster carers to become part of the team of childcare professionals who are working hard to do the best they can for the children in care.

What Do You Need To Become A Foster Carer? There is no such thing as a typical foster carer. Like the children they look after, foster carers come from all sorts of different backgrounds, cultures, religions and age groups. Brighton & Hove have single carers, gay carers, couples, some with their own children, some without. What the carers have in common is a genuine interest in helping support children through a difficult time in their lives. You will need to have enough time in your life and space in your home to care for a child or young person. As a carer you will need sensitivityand flexibility, as well as an ability to stick with children that maybe troubled or display difficult behaviour at times.

To find out more call 01273 295444 for a friendly chat fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove.gov.uk www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/fostering [1]

What Are The Rewards?

You get an opportunity to make a real difference to the life of a child. Brighton & Hove pay a generous financial allowance and provide advice, support and training every step of the way. If you have a spare bedroom and significant childcare experience, Brighton & Hove fostering recruitment team would love to hear from you.

Make a real

difference foster for Brighton & Hove

Foster Carers give children love, support and a safe place to stay. Brighton & Hove City Council want to recruit more foster carers particularly for older children. If you have a spare bedroom and childcare experience, we’d love to hear from you. We offer our foster carers generous financial allowances and first class support services.
