Rabid Dogs 1st, On DVD When a bank heist goes horribly wrong a group of desperate criminals take to the road with a young woman and a father with his sick child as hostages. Loosely based on the 1974 Mario Bava film, ‘Cani Arrabiatti’, this French film is a credit to Eric Hannezo as he turns in a very stylish film for his directorial debut. But points must be deducted for contributing to a script which, for me, purely for the radio announcements peppered throughout, is the weakest link. The performances are solid though, especially from veteran French actor Lambert Wilson and gang ringleader Guillaume Gouix, who makes you question your sympathy for his character at times. Even though it slightly loses its momentum halfway through, ‘Rabid Dogs’ (or ‘Enrages’, to give it it’s correct title) maintains the tension pretty well and the twist ending will have you wanting to re-watch the whole thing immediately to look for clues or reveal gaping plot holes. Not the best heist film you’ll ever see or even the best road movie but one that’s worth a watch and I look forward to Mr Hannezo’s next offering. Martin Lampitt 18

Suicide Squad

5th, In Cinemas DC Comics continue to hunt for the cinematic success that Marvel has been enjoying by adapting some of their lesser known characters. A team of super villains lead by Deadshot (Will Smith) are assembled to carry out black ops missions for the government. It looks like a race between Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker as to who will steal the show.

David Brent: Life On The Road 19th, In Cinemas It was inevitable that we hadn’t seen the last of Ricky Gervais’ hapless boss from TV’s ‘The Office’ and here a camera crew catches up with him as he has reinvented himself as a rock star on the road. Gervais writes, directs and stars and has even booked a few real gigs to promote the film with Brent’s band, Foregone Conclusion.

The Purge: Election Year 26th, In Cinemas The original low budget horror starring Ethan Hawke in 2013 was a surprise hit and spawned a higher budget sequel the next year as the action took to the streets. This time around Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) has become head of security for a senator who has vowed to eliminate Purge Night. Writer and director James DeMonaco once again steps behind the lens.

Ben Hur 26th, In Cinemas Even though this will be the sixth screen adaptation of Lew Wallace’s novel it is probably the 1959 version starring Charlton Heston that is the most enduring and acclaimed (it won 11 Academy Awards). Director Timur (‘Night Watch’) Bekmambetov hopes to change that with a screenplay that leans heavily on the novel and a cast that includes Jack Huston, ‘Homeland’s Nazanin Boniadi and Morgan Freeman.

The Plough

High St, Henfield BN5 9HP 01273 492280 harveys.org.uk/stockists/the-plough-inn-henfield

Going to eat outside of Brighton at a country pub I may find great views, okay food but often over priced. That has changed at The Plough in Henfield. As we walked into the pub a curtain parted to the left and we were introduced to culinary heaven by Adam Hyte and the smiling, charming Miro. We decided to share starters and once settled in Miro began to deliver, with a flourish, exquisitely presented dishes. To start a Stilton and Broccoli Soup smoothly blended consistency perfectly to compliment the flavours to remainsupreme. Served with large lightly toasted bread ‘soldiers’. Then the in house Hot Smoked Salmon with candied beetroot, chicory, goat’s cheese and chive cream with sea salt crostini giving a perfect balanced kick to the flavour of the whole. Then we indulged our senses with Roast Peach, Haloumi and Hazelnut Salad whose very textures heightened the flavours therein. Finally the Chicken Liver and Tuaca Parfait with Whiskey Jelly accompanied by the, heavenly, in house onion jam with toasted brioche baked, as all the breads, at The Plough. For mains my companion chose the enormous 10oz Ribeye Steak with Beef Dripping and creamy stilton sauce – perfection on a plate. For me Fillet of Sea Bream Baked in Banana Leaves which fell apart with just the touch of a fork with shrimp butter and heritage tomatoes. Dessert? … a delicate, luscious cherry salted, brownie with Chantilly cream. My companion chose the Strawberry and Elderflower Jelly imprisoning fresh strawberries with white chocolate mousse lending a perfect mixture of sweet and slight sharpness. Or perhaps the delicate Gin and Tonic Cake with lime Chantilly and lemon biscuit crunch. To drink there’s an extensive wine list from which to choose. The combination of flavours, surroundings, culinary magic and friendly delightful waiters makes this worth travelling out from Brighton to experience. 20

30-31 Camelford Street 01273 622386 The traditional frontage of this east side bar deceptively conceals a modern and airy interior but there’s nothing stuffy about the Camelford Arms and you can be sure of a warm welcome no matter when you visit. A sound menu and quirky Moroccan themed cosy terrace out the back provide plenty more reasons to pay this pleasant pub a visit. camelford-arms.co.uk

Fiddler’s Elbow

11 Boyce’s Street 01273 325850 It’s rumoured this welcoming city centre Irish pub serves more Guinness on St Patrick’s Day than anywhere else outside of Ireland so if you’re a fan of the black stuff there’s no better Brighton local within which to sink a pint of it. Open late every night of the week it’s also a cracking spot for following sports, whatever your colours. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/fiddlers-elbow

The Hand in Hand 33 Upper St James’ Street 01273 699595 For a pub so small (and it’s probably got less floor space than your living room) the glorious Hand in Hand doesn’t half pack a punch. As well as being arguably the city’s most friendly little tavern, it can also boast one of the most unusual breweries, built as it is on the floors above the bar. handbrewpub.com 22

WHATSONGUIDE BRIGHTON&HOVE The King & Queen

barlife

13-17 Marlborough Place 01273 607207 Staking its claim as the largest watering hole in all of Brighton, the cavernous King and Queen spreads itself over two levels and a courtyard area, with entertainment for all including giant screens for sporting action, pool tables, fußball and drinks deals that will keep you going all night without breaking the bank. Truly a pub for all seasons. thekindandqueen.co.uk

The Mucky Duck

7-9 Manchester Street 01273 601450 The real beauty of this backstreet Kemptown boozer is that it’s just so very homely. The food is hearty, the ales are always on point and the atmosphere is nothing short of convivial every day of the week. This is one drinking den to forget the world outside and spend an afternoon playing board games in – you’ll not be disappointed. themuckyduckbrighton.co.uk

The World’s End

60-61 London Road 01273 692311 If Brighton were faced with the apocalypse there are certainly worse places to experience it than this recently-renovated London Road tavern which boasts over ten different beers on tap, giant screens for popular sporting events, regular live music, bar billiards, table tennis and even a weekly poker night. Frankly you’ll be hoping the night doesn’t end, let alone the world drinkinbrighton.co.uk/worlds-end

St James Tavern

16 Madeira Place 01273 626696 Thai food and rum may not immediately seem obvious bedfellows but at the St James you’ll find an excellent variety of both. In fact you’d be hard pressed to find a pub rivalling the rum selection here with over 80 different blends from which to choose. Not that it’s exclusively for the rum connoisseur of course as the beer’s great too. pleisurepubs.com/pubs-the-st-james.html

Penetration Sat 20th, the Haunt Lead by Pauline Murray, Penetration is one of the original UK punk bands. Emerging from County Durham in 1976 they released a host of classic singles on Virgin Records starting with ‘Don’t Dictate’ in 1977. Their debut album was well received but the undeserved reaction to the follow-up caused the band to split in 1979. Last year they released their third studio album, ‘Resolution’. Hideways Saturday Lolalo Brighton’s East Street has seen even more of a resurgence in popularity since the East Street Tap popped up in March. If cocktails are more your thing than craft beer however, it’s the tiki-trance of Lolalo you will want to be heading for, with a new opening hour of 8pm on Saturdays and a new summer drinks menu featuring ‘Hot in Rio’ and ‘Miami Twice’ among others. Lolalobrighton.com

Sicknote Pride Special

Sat 6th The Volks After the massacre at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub in June, Brighton’s venues are determined to party more Proudly than ever. The Sicknote team have put together a cracking line-up of technoheads with local innovative breakbeat boys Evil Nine headlining. Tech-funker Meat Katie, veteran mixer Jerome Hill, Captain Wow, Fat Mandy and Gash will also be waving the rainbow flag high across two bleeping floors. volksclub.co.uk

Free Pride Roof Terrace Parties

Sat 6th – Sun 7th Club Revenge Naturally Revenge, the city’s LGBT mecca, is the place to go come Pride. The Revenge team have paired with Gaydio to not ‘tear the roof off’, but put a party on it instead. Two parties, actually. On both the Friday and Saturday you can soak up chart, house, and hopefully (tempestuous British summertime weather permitting) some sunshine to boot. revenge.co.uk

Goldie

Fri 19th Patterns Or ‘Goldie MBE’, to give the drum and bass superstar (and one time Bond villain) his full title. Goldie will be bringing over 20 years’ experience to the seafront’s Patterns club. The industrious Metalheadz founder will be mixing DnB and Jungle plus no doubt his own fresh material, and knowing his energy, will probably be spotted on the floor raving away and flashing those famous gnashers. patternsbrighton.com 32

Sat 20th Komedia Brighton’s long-running ‘80s night for people who hate 80s nights’ is paying tribute to the year they believe to be the greatest for music ever, 1981. Recently documented by BBC4’s Top of the Pops, this year featured hit singles from Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Ultravox and more besides. Snakebite and smoke machines feature prominently for that extra dash of nostalgia, and don’t miss The Underpants Song. komedia.co.uk/brighton

Brighton Psych Weekender Sat 27th and Sun 28th Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Not to be confused with the Brighton Mod Weekender taking place the same weekend – the music will be a little groovier for a start, and the suits not as sharp. DJ Dr Robert will be prescribing some garage, psych and freakbeat for you to twirl your florals and paisley to. Daytime events take place at The Volks. newuntouchables.com

Friday, I’m In Love Fridays Coalition Presented by events experts Fat Poppadaddys, DJs Matt Robinson and Josh Holly bring you a retro indie and dance night rather than a Cure tribute night as the name might lead you to believe (try Spellbound instead.) Follow their insta for competitions and deals. A sure Friday night bet for students: come for the drinks prices, stay for the chartfriendly pop anthem mash-ups. coalitionbrighton.com/club_nights/
