A place of our own As you may have heard, our company moved to a new location this spring. Such a move will always energize you and we are all very happy with our new working environment. This place is even more perfect than our old office to receive clients in a hospitable manner in our experience area. As a team, we operate optimally in the well-lit spaces. To liven up the place, we have added plenty of lush green plants. The large warehouse is a great work environment for our warehouse staff. Together, we thought about the interior design and the colour scheme to truly make the building our own. Warm, welcoming, bright and transparent. Would you like to take a look inside? On page 38, you will find some pictures of our new building’s grand opening. With restaurateur Bart Jurgens we also talked about the importance of having an inspiring space and offering clients top-quality products. On page 6, we give you a look inside his colourful new wine bar & bistro, called “Bonte Veren.” Sandy Brinley (interview p. 20) talks about how much she is looking forward to having a place of her own. For thirty years, she travelled the world with her
family and lived in six different countries. She shares her adventures with us and explains that - although she will certainly miss the travelling - she cannot wait to live in a house that is not temporary, but truly their own. Two-in-one

When we learned that many of our readers are also interested in an overview of all our products, we decided that it was time for a change. The result is now in your hands. This is our first two-in-one edition. A magazine and a catalogue. Double the fun!

Bonte Veren There is always something to see
“Bonte Veren” [Colourful Feathers, red.] is a spectacle to behold. That is exactly what restaurateur Bart Jurgens wanted to achieve: “There should always be something to see.” In the spring of 2019, he opened a bistro and wine bar in a beautiful old building in the heart of Elst (Gelderland, Holland). “I thought to myself: I am forty, it is now or never.” Twenty-five men worked every day for two months to turn the building from 1939 - which had been used as a pancake restaurant/ playground for children in recent years - into a stylish and warm place.

Bar made of classical cabinet doors
What stands out are the unique items that were designed by Bart’s artistic team of friends. For example, the bar is made of dozens of classical cabinet doors and the wonderful hanging lamps were made by hand from old lamp parts and vases. Quiet corners with natural wood and mossgreen colours are combined with explosions of colour: pink wallpaper with golden cars, pink sofas and peacock feathers. Burgundian
Bart wanted to create a Burgundian bar where you can walk in at any time of day to get whatever you want: cake, lunch, coffee, wine or dinner: “I am not one for the traditional frameworks.” Want to visit?

Cod steak with asparagus, sea vegetables and asparagus sauce Vegetables
Peel the asparagus thoroughly and cut circa 1 cm off the underside. Cook the asparagus al dente in salted water. Put the peel and ends of the asparagus in a separate pan with cold water and a bit of salt and place on the stove. Once it boils, take the pan off the heat and pour the contents through a sieve. Use 250 ml of the sieved contents as asparagus stock for the sauce. Melt a bit of butter in a pan and baste the cauliflower with the melted butter. Roast the cauliflower in a preheated oven at 180 degrees, while basting it with the butter every 5 minutes. Repeat until the cauliflower is cooked and has a golden-brown colour. Sauce
Cook the white wine with the onion until it is reduced by half, then add the fish fumet and reduce by half as well. Repeat this process with the asparagus stock and then with the cream. Once the sauce has a nice
consistency, pour it through a sieve. Next, glaze the sauce by mixing in cold butter using a hand blender. Note that the sauce should not be boiling. Lastly, add salt and sushi vinegar to the sauce to taste. Fish
Heat some olive oil in a frying pan, sprinkle the cod with salt and a little pepper. First, bake the cod on the skin until goldenbrown and slightly crispy. Turn the cod over and fry until it becomes nicely glassy inside.
Sea vegetables
Heat oil in another frying pan and very briefly fry the samphire, sea orache and codium. This must (!) be done very quickly and on high heat to ensure the vegetables retain their colour and bite.
Ingredients for 4 persons
• 8 lovely thick asparagus of AA quality • 100 grams of samphire • 80 grams of sea orache • 20 grams of codium • 1 cauliflower For the sauce
• 250 ml of asparagus stock • 250 ml of fish fumet • 250 ml of white wine • 250 ml of single cream • 1 onion cut into half rings • 250 grams of salted butter • Sushi vinegar
Tip: Is it not the season for white asparagus? You can also make this dish with green asparagus that are available all year round. 11

Sandy lived in six different countries
Building a home anywhere in the world Over the past thirty years, the American Sandy Brinley (52), her husband and their four children have lived in six different countries - the UK, Japan, Singapore, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands: “At first, I struggled with the life we had chosen for ourselves. I have always been shy, but over time I have come to enjoy all those new situations, countries and cultures.�

“My colorful duck costume was not appreciated by the other parents because: ducks are yellow.” “I grew up in a small village in Utah. As a family we rarely travelled. When I first met David at school, I found him exciting and adventurous: he was always trying new things. I wanted that, too. I loved his energy. We got married when David was twenty-three and I was nineteen. During the second year of our marriage, we left for Japan because David had been asked to teach English there. After a year, we came back to America so that he could go to law school.”

“After his studies, David got a job at a large international company in California. Before long, they needed someone to run their branch in Japan. He turned out to be the only one who spoke Japanese. He was young and had little experience for such a responsible position. The company came up with a solution: David was to gain experience in London, so we moved to the UK.”

Having limited experience with different cultures, it took a little while to adjust to the English society. We had our third son there and I let our two eldest children play in the street until dark during Summer holiday. A common thing to do in my American childhood town. Our English neighbours had different ideas. One neighbour started a petition and rang our doorbell: “The neighbourhood has decided to keep our children in our backyards, so please sign here.” I chose not to sign but did try to be sensitive to their customs. Also school in de UK was a bit different. The parents were asked to make duck costumes for the children to be used in a school performance When my four-year-old Tanner showed up as a multicolored duck, that was not what they

expected. The other parents asked me to redo the costume because: “Ducks are yellow.” Yes the years in the UK had some challenges but I learned a lot about acknowledging different ways of thinking. That served me well for the years that were to come.”

We don’t drink coffee, yet people were always offering us a cup. Over the years, we both became experts at surreptitiously disposing of coffee. We both watered our fair share of plants with it. It is funny in hindsight, but at the time we felt really bad about it.”

“After five years of Asian culture, we lived in the Netherlands for a short while. I was introduced to Bunzlau Castle there. I fell in love immediately: it went together perfectly with the blue-and-white tableware that I had begun to collect in Japan. A few months after we got here, David got a new job again and we moved to Singapore.”

“In Singapore, we discovered the relaxed island lifestyle. There was space aplenty, the weather was always perfect and the house we lived in was enormous. In Japan, our children had been forced to sleep together in one room. Here, we had nine bathrooms. It was impossible to clean all of them, so we only used three. We enjoyed the local cuisine of Singapore as well. Most people do not have a kitchen, but there are food stalls everywhere you look. Around dinnertime, the whole community came together there.” Leaving too soon
“Because our children were a bit older now - when we got to Singapore, our youngest was five and our oldest was fourteen - we could make trips. We went diving a lot and visited Malaysia and Indonesia. When the company sent David to a new post after just two years, none of us wanted to leave just yet.”

“We arrived in icy Calgary, Canada, still wearing our shorts and slippers. That was a major change, for sure. We had to switch and jump in. When I took our children to school in the morning, the tyres of our car were often frozen. For the first few kilometres, they would produce a loud thumping noise,

like driving on square wheels. Except for the cold, Canada was a wonderful place to live. The people are very peaceful, practical and and they have a good sense of humor about themselves. Our children learned to ski and skate and we made a lot of good friends during the five years we spent there.”

They have all become passionate travellers themselves. They also do well in the world of business, because they can relate to many different people and appreciate a variety of solutions to problems. “In Texas, we felt at home among the hard-
working and positive people. Everything was huge there. The high school was an enormous campus. Just the graduation class of Logan, our third son, was made up of 1,100 students. Texans are also very much into sports; the skill level is high. Kallie played softball in the ‘state national team.’”

the pavement and the bicycle path. In America, the two are the same: the ‘sidewalk’ is designed for both cyclists and pedestrians. While cycling, we would often stop in the middle of the path to have a chat. We must have annoyed so many Dutch people. Whenever friends visit us, we make sure to warn them: ‘The red paths are bicycle paths. Never stop in the middle of the red path! If you want to stop and chat, go to the pavement.’”

“For Kallie, our next move - back to the Netherlands three years later - was therefore the hardest. She had to give up her favourite sport and her three brothers had already left home. She missed them so much. Our children have always been best friends; wherever they were, they only had each other at first. Now Kallie had to go at it alone.” Shopping bag
“What we all liked about the Netherlands is that everything is close by. We have been to most of Europe. David rides his bike to work for an hour every morning. He loves that. The Netherlands are clean, lush and green. We also love that the food in Dutch supermarkets is so fresh. Last night, we drove to Paris. Björn’s parents are watching the children for a few days. Our children and their grandparents love spending time together and we don’t have to worry about them at all. This morning, we left early to go to the event. The event floor is enormous: eight halls on 135,000 m2. In “our” hall, an external team has been hard at work to set up our stand: the cabinets, the walls and the bar are already finished. The rest is up to us. As usual, we made a detailed plan beforehand, so we know exactly where each product and decoration has to be placed. Otherwise, we would not be ready on time. The stand must give visitors a warm and welcoming feeling - the same look and feel as our brand, but slightly different each year. We worked hard for eight hours, together with Marlanda and Femke. At the end of the afternoon, a few more colleagues from the Netherlands join us for the final touches. Everything is where it should be and we are satisfied: let the show begin!
My alarm goes off at 6.30 in the morning. After breakfast with the family, everyone gets ready for school. I remind the youngest children to pack their PE kit, because they tend to forget. Josephine, the oldest, found out yesterday that she graduated and she is working in our warehouse this summer. Together, we drive to work.
Thursday 17 January
I love exploring the different halls, attending workshops and acquiring new inspiration. It is very international in nature, there are lots of colourful individuals around and the exhibitors are clearly eager to show off their new products. The event in Paris is one of the highlights of our year. Not in the least because it is a great place to meet existing and new clients! Tomorrow evening, I will drive back to our family and my colleagues will take over running the stand. On Saturday, I once again get to encourage our boys on the soccer field.
I put the boxes of products that I carefully selected yesterday in the car, quickly grab a cup of coffee for the road and we are off to Amersfoort. I pick up Lianne, our external copywriter and photographer, and together, we head for Elst. An hour later, we receive a warm welcome from Bart Jurgens in his atmospheric bistro “Bonte Veren.” I love talking to passionate entrepreneurs who use our products and discovering new and surprising locations each time. It really energises me. I am always amazed to see just how well our tableware matches almost every interior. For the interviews and photo shoots, we often have to drive all over the country. Lianne and I sometimes joke to each other that we could write a book about it: Special and inspiring places in and around the Netherlands. After two and a half hours of talking, tasting and taking pictures, we are back in the car. It now smells like truffles because of the delicious lunch that Bart gave us. This was another successful meeting and we are right on schedule; I will be back home in time to pick up the children from school. Curious to see the result of our visit to “Bonte Veren”? See page 6.

Festive opening new building In early 2019, we moved to our new building, located just twenty metres away from our old office. Although we are still in pretty much the same location, this move meant a significant change in space, atmosphere and appearance. We are very pleased with it! To celebrate the move, along with our company’s thirty-five-year anniversary, we decided to open our new location in a festive manner.

My Bunzlau Ca stl e
“The memories associated with it make it even better.” My grandmother started the collection. I inherited both her collection and her love for Bunzlau Castle. What I love most are the memories it brings back and the designs, which all go together perfectly. In addition, Bunzlau Castle looks great in any home: my grandmother’s home had a stylish and classical design, while my own house is more modern and industrial. I now have forty-five Bunzlau Castle objects and I have no intention of stopping there! My favourite piece is my grandmother’s candy jar with the Ivy design. It was a gift from me to her, but it is back in my collection once more because my
grandmother, Mimi, unfortunately passed away on 31 October 2018. It was so quick and unexpected. I had wanted to do so much more with her. I not only keep candy in this jar; I also store my memories of my grandmother in it. I cherish this piece with all my heart and it has a prominent place on my table. Whenever I look at it, I think back on all the precious moments we had together: how she would laugh when I did something crazy, how she always had some sweets to give out and how she wanted her granddaughter to have the entire world. I miss you terribly, but I love the fact that my memories of you have made this piece even more beautiful, grandma!

I have fourteen cups, a kitchen roll holder, a salad bowl, an onion jar, a cake plate and many bowls. For every birthday or Christmas, I ask for more Bunzlau Castle products. I love it!
My favourite item is my onion jar. My parents gave it to me as a birthday present. My husband and I love onions and garlic and I wanted to give them a special place on my kitchen counter, instead of leaving them in their net in the fridge. The jar even has my favourite design: the one with the eyes, which I believe is one of Bunzlau Castle’s earliest designs. It looks amazing on my kitchen counter.

We have already collected more than one hundred products. I also have a very old
Bunzlau Castle jug that I came across by chance one day in a shop full of old stuff. Very nice! My favourite product is the farmer mug. That was the piece that first caught my eye. I love drinking from it. In the winter, it is so great to warm your hands on it. With its round shape, it fits so nicely in your hands.

I have been a fan for at least fourteen years. The first Bunzlau Castle I got as a gift was a wonderful oven dish, bought at a cooking store in Eindhoven. That was the start of a very large collection. I love this tableware, almost everything looks great together. I primarily collect the dark blue, brown and green colours. Whenever I have a workshop or dinner, the table is packed and I already got a ton of other people to start a collection of their own.
My collection is too large to count, but I have at least 130 products, ranging from ovenware to plates and tea/coffee cups and tea and kitchen towels. I love everything, even the tiny little bowl for soy sauce. I had just filled the water jug with some beautiful white roses, which explains the picture of me and my beautiful vase!
Bunzlau Castle’s Quality
Bunzlau Castle’s first-class quality stickers.
You can acquire our Bunzlau Castle tableware at a store or online. How can you be sure that you have bought the quality that you expected from Bunzlau Castle? We have answered this and other questions for you, so that you can enjoy your purchase for years.
How can I be certain that I bring home the official Bunzlau Castle tableware of the highest quality? You can verify this by checking the product stickers. What do these stickers mean? Each product goes through two quality control checks: one during production and the second while at the warehouse. These checks ensure that there are no damages or fabrication defects. A perfect product receives a “first-class quality” sticker.
What if there is no sticker on the products? This could mean two things: either it is tableware of an inferior quality or it is not really Bunzlau Castle’s product. In the first case, the product is damaged or has a fabrication defect. Therefore, it did not pass the quality controls and was given a quality label ranging from second to fifth, depending on the damage. The lower the quality, the greater the possibility for it to break easily or suffer damages. As mentioned above, having no sticker can also mean that the product is not Bunzlau Castle. In these cases, it is also likely that the tableware is of inferior quality. What if, despite a first-class quality sticker, my official Bunzlau Castle has a fabrication defect? It is unlikely, but ofcourse it is possible that during the controls, a fabrication defect goes unnoticed. Go back to the official Bunzlau Castle shop where you bought the tableware. They will be able to help you out.
