Festive retrospective: 40 years of Clip Quality Brands
This year we are celebrating something very special: Clip Quality Brands, the family business that Bunzlau Castle is part of, has been in business for 40 years! That is why this edition of our lifestyle magazine marks this joyous occasion by delving into the history of our family business. Together with the two Bakker generations - Henk & Tet and Björn & Ruchama - we look back and to the future!
How it all began
In 1984, Henk and Tet Bakker - Björn's parents - founded Clip Quality Brands. One of their main focus points when founding the company was that their products would be produced mainly within Europe. This stemmed from their vision to responsibly produce quality and sustainable products.
With time and a steady growth, they soon moved from their home office to their first real business premises. Meanwhile, Clip Quality Brands represented multiple brands and Bunzlau Castle was expanded. Henk: "We started Bunzlau Castle as a high-end tableware brand and have expanded our range over the years while maintaining quality and durability."
Teach them young
The company's first steps took place at the Bakker family’s home, where the garage was converted into a warehouse. As a little boy,
Björn helped his father build shelving units and pick orders. Björn: "During school holidays, we would travel together to visit producers and customers both in the Netherlands and abroad. That's how my father taught me - in a practical way - about entrepreneurship. What was also a very valuable experience was that, during a summer holiday, I was allowed to work in the office and warehouse of one of our partners in England. All these experiences provided a great foundation for my future. Ruchama and I have also introduced our children to the DNA of our family."
Passion for product development
Henk and Björn are both true visionaries with a love for quality and design, form and functionality. Forty years ago, the product development process was very different, Henk explains. "If I had an idea, I had to draw it, then fax the drawing to the factory, and then they would respond. This process often took a very long time."
"It will always be special to finally be able to hold a product or decor that started out as a sketch."
Bowl 5700 ml
Although the method of product development has changed over the years, Björn still recognizes the passion for new ideas. Henk is still very involved in product development. It will always be special to finally be able to hold a product or decor that started out as a sketch. And when customers respond positively, everyone experiences a boost in energy!
Unique craftsmanship
Bunzlau Castle tableware is hand-stamped and known for its authentic manufacturing process. First, the clay is dried in moulds, after which the moulds are removed and any imperfections corrected. After baking the design at 1250 degrees Celsius, the decorating can begin. Björn was allowed to try it once: "A very meticulous job. You soon make a mistake by pressing the stamp too hard. Decorating is a real craft. It requires years of experience to achieve our level of quality", Björn says.
A deeper meaning
For the family, being together and making time for each other are key. This is also what they try to convey with Bunzlau Castle: "Tableware
gives a lot of meaning to your daily life. The memories you make at the dinner table, the cosy moments, sitting on the sofa together with a nice cup of tea. You could compare all that to a beautiful relationship. At first, we fell in love with the look and feel of the tableware, which is not surprising as it is made with great care and dedication. Over time, the love grew and it became an almost inseparable part of our lives", Tet explains.
The traveling teapot
Every Bunzlau Castle fan has a favourite item, the Bakker family included. For Tet, there is only one answer: "Our teapot! We are huge tea drinkers and make a fresh pot at least three times a day. Even on holidays. We make room in our luggage for the teapot because tea is part of our daily routine."
Björn prefers to start his day with a delicious espresso from his little Tulip mug while Ruchama likes to end her day with a nice cup of tea from a Farmer mug. "Especially in the evening, I often enjoy fresh mint tea from our largest Farmer mug", Ruchama says.
Quality brands that make a difference
In recent years, Clip Quality Brands has created space for new brands, all with a similar goal: to make a difference. In 2023, we acquired The Table Amsterdam whose tableware is handmade according to the World Fair Trade Organisation’s standards. As of January this year, Return to Sender has also joined our group.
Return to Sender is a brand that is fully dedicated to providing employment for women in poorer regions. With these brands, we want to continue to innovate in a sustainable way and make a difference when it comes to employment, proper working conditions and fair wages.
Proud and grateful
Henk and Tet: "When we look back on the past 40 years, we think of all the special relationships with our customers, suppliers and - of course - our employees. They are an important part of our lives. We often share memories and stories at the dinner table. We feel privileged to have been able to build this company and make people around the world happy with our products."
"It is special to be able to take over your parents' business", Björn says, "and we are very grateful for the solid basis they created. We are full of ideas and excitedly look forward to what the future holds." Ruchama adds: "But we can't do this without our incredible team. It's truly great to be able to do this together!"

Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum
Following a successful launch of the Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum collection, this range will be expanded. A unique ceramic and textile collection inspired by the works of Van Gogh. Marijn Veraart is Head of Global Partnerships & Licensing for the Van Gogh Museum and tells us about the partnership.
"Together with our partners, we want to create and encourage each other to be creative. Just as Vincent was."
Partnership
Vincent van Gogh's works are second to none. His art provides comfort and inspiration to many people around the world. The Van Gogh Museum, founded in 1973, is doing everything to keep his legacy alive. The partnership collection between the Van Gogh Museum and Bunzlau Castle honours this. Van Gogh's paintings were not directly copied onto the ceramics but they inspired the unique yet recognisable decors. Marijn explains: "This is exactly what we hope for in a partnership. Vincent was a hugely creative and idiosyncratic man. He was vulnerable but knew exactly what he was doing and when his works were finished. Together with our partners, we want to create and encourage each other to be creative. Just as Vincent was."
"For our global partnerships, we always look at the core values of a potential partner first. Do they fit the Van Gogh Museum's mission? Is there a so-called brand fit? With Bunzlau Castle, everything immediately felt right. We saw their great passion for high-quality products. Their beautiful designs stand out and all have their own distinctive style. Bunzlau Castle's designs are truly unique. This suits Vincent van Gogh's unparalleled work perfectly."
Generation to generation
"Moreover, Bunzlau Castle is a family business. Family was incredibly important to Vincent. He and his brother Theo wrote to each other every day with love and devotion. In fact, it was Theo who inspired Vincent to become an artist. Even today, the Van Gogh family is very important to the Van Gogh Museum. As the museum's ambassador, the family is doing all they can to ensure Vincent’s legacy lives on, from generation to generation."
The collection
The Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum ceramic collection consists of six decors that are stamped onto all of Bunzlau Castle's bestsellers. This year, the collection was expanded to include a soap dispenser, straight mugs, a 450 ml bowl, petit four plates, magnets and key rings. Unique eye-catchers for all Van Gogh and Bunzlau Castle lovers, and an enrichment to the entire collection.
The textile series features kitchen and tea towels in two different designs. These are based on Van Gogh's drawings of his famous paintings of the vase of sunflowers and the almond blossom. Over the coming years, the collection will be expanded with new decors and products.
What is Unikat?
In addition to stamping, certain lines are painted onto the ceramics by hand. This extra craftsmanship makes each product unique and precious.

Who hasn’t heard of it? Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. For him, sunflowers symbolized gratitude. He therefore included these bright yellow flowers in several of his paintings.

Old Vineyard
Old Vineyard with Peasant Woman is one of Van Gogh's last paintings and was the inspiration for a setting with infinitely curled vines. The wavy lines often make an appearance in later paintings.
Vincent's Flowers
For its anniversary, the Van Gogh Museum has developed a unique and new design inspired by seven different flower paintings by Van Gogh. The rich colours and detailed flowers are the inspiration for an extraordinary décor in which an additional painting technique is applied, making it even more unique!
Almond Blossom
Van Gogh immensely enjoyed large blossom branches against a blue sky. His painting Almond Blossom was a gift for the birth of his nephew, who was named after Vincent. For the Van Gogh family, this painting has remained the most treasured work.

Inside look at interior stylist Souraya
Souraya has been working as an interior stylist for 15 years. She caters to individuals and companies, from events to photo shoots. Raised with influences from the Netherlands and Egypt, Souraya combines multiple styles and cultures in her work. Her Dutch-Egyptian roots have allowed her to develop a unique approach to interior design. Souraya’s designs include an interplay of Bohemian and Scandinavian styles with Arabic influences. This results in atmospheric and unique interiors.
Home favourites
For Souraya, the kitchen is the heart of her home. "I especially enjoy my kitchen island. When we have visitors, there is always ample space for everyone to enjoy a cup of coffee." The kitchen is also where you will find her favourite feature. "The pink doors you see here are originally from Egypt. This unique showpiece is very dear to me as these doors are very typical for Egypt. By incorporating such elements into your interior, you give it its own character."
Sustainability and materials
Sustainability is an essential part of Souraya's designs. She places a strong emphasis on reusing items. "I pay attention to the materials I use and prefer recycled materials. She also encourages her clients to give vintage furniture a second life by painting it. This way, you not only give a piece of furniture new life, you also create your own unique story", she passionately explains.
A cosy home
Souraya advises to choose your tableware and home accessories carefully as they are essential for creating a cosy atmosphere. She adds: "Invest in beautiful tableware that is both functional and decorative. It makes a world of difference." For Souraya, these elements are essential for adding a personal touch to any interior. "Play with different accessories such as vases, cushions and plaids", she advises. "By paying attention to these details, a space can be transformed into a warm and inviting place where you immediately feel at home."
“Dare to combine colours and be inspired by trends but choose what you like.”

Make it personal
Personalize your interior with timeless features that reflect you and your family. "For example, by using something that belonged to your grandparents and can be passed down from generation to generation. Embrace these items because they are a piece of yourself", Souraya says. "Integrate them in a way that suits your interior, even if this leads to surprising contrasts. This will make your interior distinctive and authentic."
Coming home to Boutique Hotel Bij De Pastorie
In the North Frisian village of Reitsum stands an idyllic little church. Since 2023, this beautiful building houses an intimate and luxurious boutique hotel with coffee bar and shop: Bij De Pastorie. Proud owners Anco Hoekema (48) and Dorianne Hofker (51) furnished their slice of heaven with respect for the church’s authentic details and atmosphere. Staying at Bij De Pastorie means enjoying ultimate tranquillity.
The spacious views of the Frisian countryside and the chickens and rabbits that roam around contribute to the boutique hotel's convivial and harmonious atmosphere. Dorianne: "We want our guests to feel welcome and at home. That’s why we always opt for a personal approach. The simple things, such as a handwritten welcome note, make every stay special. We work on a basis of trust, if a guest is in the mood for a cup of coffee, they are welcome to make one themselves."
Renewed unity
In a way, guests are at home with Dorianne and Anco. The couple, together with their two daughters, have lived in the adjacent clergy house for 20 years. Dorianne: "We used to look at the beautiful little church next to our house and daydream about owning it. "If it ever comes up for sale again…," we would say to each other, "we have so many wonderful ideas. We had to be patient and it took a lot of work but the church finally came up for sale and after a few years, we owned it." Anco adds: "We like the idea that the church and clergy house now belong together again. We think of it as a renewed unity that we are very keen on preserving for the generations to come."
Father Ploos
Dorianne and Anco also think this is important for the village. Dorianne: "People have memories of the church and we want them to be able to cherish those memories. We tried to keep the church recognizable with its tall windows and ceilings in the original green colour. We have changed the appearance of the church as little as possible." There are two churches in Reitsum. This Reformed church was founded by Father Ploos van Amstel (1835-1895). He was a popular man in De Flieterpen (a group of villages to which Reitsum belongs) and a gifted speaker. Anco and Dorianne aim to keep this history alive.
Entrepreneurs
Dorianne: "We have done a lot to Bij De Pastorie ourselves. Everything was decided by us and it is therefore truly our own: the furnishings, the decoration, our way of doing business and most of the remodelling." Anco was the driving force behind the renovation. He took five months off work to complete it. Dorianne takes care of the business side of things. Her duties include the daily operations, marketing, administration and hosting. Entrepreneurship is in her blood. Her family owned a group hostel, a shop and a bungalow park on Dutch island Ameland.
Vase Droplet 420 ml, Vase Spout 420 ml
Besides managing a hotel and shop, Dorianne is also one of the founders of the North Frisian Shops Route, a cycling route that connects rural shops between Dokkum and Ferwert. Although Anco had to grow into it a bit more, he too is a real entrepreneur.
Incidentally, the love for Bunzlau Castle comes from Dorianne's mother. She was already selling the products on Ameland in the 1990s. Since 2011, Dorianne has been managing a tableware shop where Bunzlau Castle products are of course also available. "It was instilled in me from a young age. But I am certainly not complaining. The hand-stamped tableware is durable and very beautiful. We serve breakfast on it and it is displayed in the rooms. We get a lot of great feedback for using Bunzlau Castle."
The next generation
Living next door to the boutique hotel naturally presents some challenges for Dorianne and Anco. It is sometimes difficult to separate work from their private life. There is always something to do. Still, on quiet Sundays, they take time to enjoy their hard work together with their daughters. Because they too are involved in Bij De Pastorie.
Anco: "We didn't just create a business. We hope that the generations after us will continue to care for our boutique hotel."
Are you in Friesland?
Then don't skip Bij De Pastorie! There is also plenty to do in the surrounding area. The North Frisian Shops Route features the region's most distinctive shops. Bij De Pastorie’s tableware shop is also part of the route. Plan a day trip to the beautiful Dutch island Ameland, the Lauwersmeer or cycle the iconic Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities tour). There is plenty to do in stunning Friesland.

A warm welcome to Manon Proper
Manon is not only a mother of twins and triplets, she is also a passionate chef who inspires others with her culinary talent and love for her family. She is the author of popular cookbook Bistro Manon and shares all her adventures on Instagram. We talk to her about her recent move to the United States, her work-family life balance and her passion for cooking.
A new chapter in Washington D.C
In August 2023, Manon moved to Washington D.C. with her family. The move was a big step, especially for the children. "They are doing very well. They have found their routine, made new friends and learned to play new sports", Manon says. "With ten-year-old twins and eight-yearold triplets, life is busy and full of excitement. The baby phase was fun but also incredibly hard work. What a difference we are experiencing now!"
Daily life in the USA
The American school system is different compared to the Netherlands. The triplets are in
second grade (group four in the Netherlands) and the twins in fourth grade (group six in the Netherlands). They also attend classes at the Dutch school every Saturday morning where they take Cito tests. "This way they continue to develop their Dutch language skills and have contact with other Dutch children living here", says Manon.
The children feel completely at home in their new neighbourhood and have quickly made friends. "We live in a great neighbourhood and the school is within walking distance. As of recently, the kids are allowed to walk to school on their own, just like they used to in the Netherlands", Manon shares proudly.
Oven Dish Rectangular 2850 ml
"Whenever I make something new, one always says: This one should definitely be in your next cookbook mum!"
Eating with the family
All five children are completely different, but when it comes to food, they love the same things. "They get especially excited when we go out for dinner. They all love Korean and Indian food and we love going to Rumi's Kitchen, a great restaurant here in D.C." The love for good restaurants is a big part of the family, but fortunately the children also love what Manon prepares at home. "Whenever I make something new, one always says: 'This one should definitely be in your next cookbook mum!'"
Cooking together
Manon likes to involve her children in her cooking. "I would advise all parents to do that from time to time. The advantage is that they learn to appreciate food by having a sneaky little taste in between. I say the word sneaky on purpose. Sometimes I just know they won't like certain foods right away. So instead of creating awkwardness by saying: “See if you like this", I sometimes say: "Wow, this is delicious but I
Deze momenten zijn waardevol, zegt Manon. "Niet alleen vanwege het koken, maar ook om samen tijd door te brengen en te praten."
don’t think I have enough for everyone. Okay then, go ahead. You can try it. But quickly so no one else sees! Then when the food is ready, they gloat with pride that they prepared it. These moments are precious", says Manon. "Not only because of the cooking, but also because we spend time together and talk."
Healthy eating in America
Eating healthy proves to be a huge challenge in America, but Manon always finds a way. "I knew that the food culture in America is generally unhealthy, but I never expected it to be this bad. Even the simplest products have all sorts of bad things added to them so I pay close attention to labels and avoid ultraprocessed foods. Instead of buying biscuits and other snacks from the supermarket, I make them myself!" She finds the school’s lunch menu shocking: "Chicken nuggets, waffles with syrup, hamburgers... it's absurd. From day one, I have made lunch for the kids myself and luckily they are happy with that."
A passion for cooking
Manon's love of cooking began at a young age but truly blossomed during her time in New York where she got to experience different cultures and cuisines. "I came into contact with so many people from different countries. I was also invited to people’s homes from time to time which introduced me to many different recipes." The dishes she learnt to cook during her trip were the inspiration for her book Bistro Manon. "The main goal of my book is to provide my readers with inspiration for everyday meals. This may sound deliberately simple, but I find that many people actually struggle with this. So that’s where my book comes in: healthy, varied and simple cooking for the entire family."
Bunzlau Castle
A big fan of Bunzlau Castle, the ceramics often have a prominent place in Manon’s kitchen and on her Instagram feed. "Bunzlau Castle is always part of our tableware! I love using the dishes, plates and bowls to showcase all my recipes. I like using Bunzlau Castle because it is both functional and looks good on the dining table", says Manon. "I like to combine as many different sets as possible. The tableware is extremely durable and continues to look beautiful even after frequent use. And with children at the table, that’s a must!"
Future
plans
Manon is currently working very hard on her second cookbook and looks forward to sharing it with her followers. "The overseas move has been quite challenging so writing a second book has been on the back burner for a while. Fortunately, I have now collected plenty of recipes to fill an entire book. This is something I hope to tell you more about soon!" Can't wait for the cookbook? Then take a look at Manon’s Instagram where she shares delicious recipes every day. Naturally, beautifully presented on her favourite tableware.

Discover Manon's homemade bulgur
A favourite dish of both Manon and her family is this delicious Middle Eastern bulgur salad, rich in vegetables and fresh herbs. It is a filling salad that is suitable for both lunch and dinner, which is why it’s on Manon's menu every week.
Preparation
• Place a pan with the bulgur and vegetable stock on medium heat. Put the lid on the pan and bring the contents to a boil. Immediately turn down the heat and leave the bulgur to absorb all the stock (+/- 15 minutes). Turn off the heat and let the bulgur rest with the lid on for 10 minutes (see tip).
• Pour the bulgur into a large (oven) dish and fluff with a fork. Allow the bulgur to cool by occasionally stirring it with a fork.
• Place a frying pan on medium heat and add two tablespoons of olive oil. Add the onion rings and fry until golden brown (+/-15 minutes). Add the spices plus the salt and fry for one more minute. If the onion mixture looks too dry, add a little more olive oil. The onions and spices should be well coated with oil so that they cook properly.
• Add the lemon zest and juice along with the remaining olive oil to a small bowl and stir. Pour the mixture over the bulgur and stir well. Add the onions, almonds and fresh herbs to the bulgur and stir again. Sample to see if the bulgur is seasoned to taste. Add some salt if necessary. The bulgur is now ready to be served.
Ingredients:
• 500 grams bulgur
• 1 litre of vegetable stock
• 5 tablespoons of olive oil
• 2 onions, cut into rings
• 2 teaspoons ground cumin seeds
• 2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds
• 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 150 grams almonds, roasted
• The zest and juice of 1 lemon
• Fresh herbs such as parsley and dill, finely chopped

Our fans about their favourite products
Your unique Bunzlau Castle collection says something about who you are and what you love. There is no one with the same items as you, which is what makes your collection so special. In "My Bunzlau Castle", our fans talk about their passion for tableware.
The shared passion of mother and daughter Edith and Fleur is shopping for Bunzlau Castle tableware. This tradition started years ago when Fleur surprised her mother with a beautiful teapot. She had seen the Polish tableware at a good friend of hers and immediately knew that it would perfectly match Edith's love for blue and white tableware. Since then, their love for Bunzlau Castle, along with their collection, has grown.
"The tableware is so timeless and versatile, you can combine everything and never get tired of it. I use it for all my dishes!" Edith says.
"The tableware is so timeless and versatile, you can combine everything..."
Edith & Fleur (mother and daughter), number of items together: 45 pieces
"Also, the tableware is extremely durable so it will last for years to come", Fleur adds.
Edith’s face lights up as she tells us about her favourite pieces. "Every week I bake a new cake which I then serve on my cake dish. I also use the round oven dish every day; it’s perfect for salads!" Fleur particularly loves the mugs, bowls and plates that you can use for any occasion.
But still, the teapot has a special place in their hearts. For both mother and daughter, it’s a symbol of togetherness and connection. And, let’s not forget, the teapot represents the beginning of their shared collection and a loving tradition.
Besides being mother and daughter, Annette and Nienke are also business partners in their farm shop Fruittuin Verbeek. They sell delicious fresh produce from their own orchard as well as numerous Bunzlau Castle items.
The business once started as a small-scale fruit and vegetable shop, but when a fire destroyed the entire property in 2009, Annette and Nienke decided to rebuild the shop to fit a wider range of products. They wanted to create a place where you could go for fresh produce as well as accessories and gifts. Annette first introduced Bunzlau Castle to the shop as she had been in love with it for years already because of her neighbours' collection.
At home, Annette also started her own collection. When Nienke moved out of her parents’ house and started using different tableware, she soon missed the familiarity of her childhood. Soon, she started her own collection, keeping the generational love
“At dinner, we switch plates among ourselves so that everyone eats from their favourite decor.”

for this particular tableware alive.
Despite their shared passion, they each have their own taste. "My mother usually opts for the slightly older decors, but I like things to be a bit more trendy. That’s where you might notice our 30-year age difference", Nienke jokes. "When we eat at my mother's, we switch plates among ourselves so that everyone eats from their favourite decor."
Annette's favourite decor is Bunch of Flowers, a pattern that has not been part of our collection anymore for years. This is secretly also Nienke's favourite decor, who is already keeping her eye on some of her mother's beautiful bowls. "When you own items that are no longer being made, you cherish those pieces even more", Nienke explains. Both enjoy dining together. Whether it's with the entire family and all the tableware out on the table or a quick lunchtime sandwich, Bunzlau Castle tableware makes every moment special.
"You can put together your very own collection which then reflects who you are. "
Willemijn and Vivian have shared a passion for Bunzlau Castle for many years. They were immediately sold when they first saw the handstamped tableware in a shop. It soon became a tradition to surprise each other with their favourite brand during special occasions. Willemijn recalls: "Twenty years ago Vivian gifted me a creamer and she recently gave me a matching sugar bowl. Just goes to show that your collection is never complete!"
Their excitement is contagious. Aunt Wijmpje also became a fan. "I already owned a lot of tableware, but since I started collecting Bunzlau Castle, I catch myself picking those mugs over the others every time", she says. Willemijn: "You can put together your very own collection which then reflects who you are. I was raised on a farm so I love tableware and textiles with animals on them." All three women
love art and enjoy painting." This is what makes the Bunzlau Castle x Van Gogh Museum collection so special for us. It allowed us to bring beautiful works of art into our home in a very unique way."
"The tableware is durable and remains beautiful for so long! In fact, you can hardly tell that we use it every day. Besides, it makes me happy when I take out a plate or mug", Vivian says. Vivian traditionally always takes some tulip mugs with her on holiday. "The decors make me very happy, but they also make me feel at home."
Willemijn's most treasured item is her teapot."My husband once gave it to his mother and it was passed down to me after she died." It’s a cherished piece that will forever hold a special place within the family.

Bunzlau Castle and Midsummer: a floral match
During Midsummer, Swedes celebrate the longest day of the year. In Sweden, it is the second most important holiday after Christmas. A time to welcome the warmer days and escape to the countryside to be with family and friends.
Enjoying delicious Swedish food is an important part of any Midsummer celebration. Traditional Swedish dishes you will find on a Midsummer table include herring served with chives and cream cheese, boiled new potatoes with fresh dill, salted salmon, rustic bread and meatballs. Don't forget a delicious homemade cake with fresh red fruit and edible flowers. But above all, opt for things that you and your company like. After all, it’s about spending time together!
Enjoying delicious Swedish food
Toast with our sparkling glasses
No Midsummer table is complete without some light beer and schnapps. No, we’re not talking about the peppermint or peach liqueur you will find in the USA. Swedish schnapps is aquavit or vodka flavoured with herbs such as aniseed, caraway seed, dill or fennel. You can also choose to serve a delicious white wine for the adults and lemonade for the children.
Water Glass Summer Breeze 300 ml
Tip: choose different colourful flowers to really create a party!
Midsummer in your hair
Men, women and children begin the Midsummer celebrations by picking wild flowers to make a wreath. These include cornflowers and chamomile.
Colourful table styling
The flowers do not only look great in a wreath, they also lend themselves perfectly for your table styling. Bright blue with white and yellow goes very well with Bunzlau Castle.
Tip: You can use the petals of cornflowers in your food. Sprinkle some over a salad or cake and instantly make your dishes more classy. The large bowl is perfect for filling with water, floating candles and flowers. This adds an atmospheric and decorative element to your table.
Beautiful napkins make every table a party. See p. 137 for strong napkins from Organic Home that last.
At home, we bake something every day and we always have a bottle of wine in the fridge
Rudolph van Veen was perhaps the most surprised of all when he was asked to cook on TV in 2000. He had been working as a high-end chef and pastry chef for many years already. He was a natural at cooking on TV because he could inspire people and give them the confidence to cook or bake something. This year, Rudolph will celebrate his 40th anniversary as a chef. And it seems the next generation is already eager to follow in his footsteps.
Oven Dish Round 1980 ml
First love
Rudolph remembers the exact moment he decided to become a chef. Together with his family, he would watch Mies Bouwman's TV show on Saturday nights. Mies interviewed a chef; an inspiring man in an immaculate white uniform and top hat. He proudly recounted a meal he had prepared for Queen Juliana. Rudolph: "I turned to my mother: 'Mum, can I become a chef too? Just like that gentleman?' Apparently that dream always remained. The love for food was already there. My parents were very hospitable people who lovingly prepared extra plates for guests. Moreover, my father worked as a sailor on the Holland America Line and was very adventurous when it came to food. As soon as there was something new, he wanted to try it. The yellow pepper, for example, or the kiwi, which only became available in the 1970s. In the 1980s, we ate a new spectacularly delicious dessert from Italy for the first time: tiramisu." Rudolph's dream came true when he had the honour of preparing something delicious for a queen. Together with a team of pastry chefs, he made
a Mother's Day cake for Queen Beatrix for her 35th royal jubilee. It remains one of the greatest memories of his career.
Doing what you love most
However, Rudolph’s main mission is to inspire ordinary cooks at home to prepare tasty, healthy, varied and simple meals. Rudolph: "To be able to do what I do, I have obviously had to work extremely hard. The culinary world and its training courses are very intense. To progress, you have to get good grades, have a lot of discipline and put in many hours at internships and training restaurants. But every day, I do what I love most. I am currently putting the finishing touches on my latest cookbook, Lekker Hollands, which is an ode to Dutch cuisine with recipes from the past and the present. Furthermore, I am in Serbia a lot this year for an interesting culinary project and I will be back in a number of Dutch theatres with my Christmas show: Rudolph's Bakery Live, the Holidays."
A successor in the family
Rudolph still enjoys cooking at home too. "Although preferably a meal with as few dishes as possible so I can eat in a tidy kitchen. A lovely casserole, for example, or a tasty risotto. And sometimes we go crazy: all the way! Then we start with a tasty assortment of small bites to accompany some champagne. This is then followed by three or four dishes for which we take our guests' preferences into account. And of course there is something sweet as well. What we enjoy most is a generous cheeseboard because it’s so nice to eat together. Fresh grapes, a little syrup and quince jelly, some special bread and thin toast with almonds. Delicious!" Rudolph lives with Simone and their son Ralph. Rudolph's daughter Doris (30) has a house in Eindhoven with her boyfriend Marijn. "We see each other a lot and love spending time together. And food is definitely something we enjoy together." The love for cooking seems to have been passed down to 11-year-old Ralph. He started his own Instagram series Ralph’s Culinaire Wereld (Ralph's Culinary World) with one recipe from a different country each time. "He makes those videos in our kitchen. I think it’s incredible and of course I think along with him.
But if he decides to follow some other dream later on, that's totally fine too!"
Decoration
Rudolph’s kitchen is a lovely living kitchen where the door is open as much as possible. Rudolph: "The dogs walk in and out whenever they want and sometimes the neighbour's horse even comes in for peek. We always have some wine in the fridge and we bake something every day. It's a good thing we have a big table with lots of chairs. To me, a beautifully set table is an expression of hospitality so I always do my best to accommodate that. Bunzlau Castle's products certainly fit the bill. The functional, heavy-duty quality appeals to me. The tableware is solid, clear and durable and of course beautifully designed with those typical shades of blue. Every dish comes into its own when served with Bunzlau Castle. And the mugs are incredible! I always drink my morning coffee and my Earl Grey tea - with a splash of milk - from a Bunzlau Castle mug."

A sustainable choice; for now and later
We believe that when you know a product is made in a fair way, you enjoy it more. At Bunzlau Castle, sustainability is one of the most important core values. For us, an important part of sustainability is our choice of materials, but we find it equally important to make the right choice regarding production, people and transport. By making sustainable choices, we can truly make a difference. For now and later.
Materials
It is important to us that the quality of our products is high so that they have a long life. Our choice of materials plays an important role in this. We always aim to make realistic choices. For us, it is important that the products are suitable for daily use as well as for special occasions, without compromising on quality. After all, a product that lasts for years is also more sustainable.
Bunzlau Castle tableware is made from raw materials from the factory's surroundings. As many as seven different types of clay are used. The paint used on the ceramics is made from natural materials as well. The different collections mix and match perfectly, making them less susceptible to trends. This way, you can collect the tableware for life.
For our kitchen, table and home textiles, material choice is incredibly important. For this too, we consciously choose to produce within Europe. The cotton we use is 100% organic, without any harmful substances and chemicals.
To give you more certainty and clarity as a consumer, many of our products have official OCS or GOTS certifications. This means that an independent party has audited the entire chain, from plantation to wholesale.
Production
Our production is done with great care. Every detail has been thought through, and you can see and feel that. All the remnants created during the production process are reused. Kitchen cloth fabric is made into oven mitts and potholders.
Our factories have their own wastewater treatment plant and the spinning factories run entirely on solar energy. Our warehouse in Nijkerk is also gas-free and runs on solar energy.
People
Before our product reaches your home, many people have worked on it with great love and care. We visit our factories regularly to keep on top of proper working conditions. Wages and working conditions throughout the chain are good, safe and verified by independent parties. That feels good!
Transport
Because all our products are produced in Europe, they do not have to travel a long way to the Netherlands. With our warehouse centrally located in the Netherlands, we can supply our sellers quickly. We ship our parcels with DHL. They offset their carbon emissions and guarantee a climate-neutral delivery.
This way, we consider the impact on both people and the environment throughout the entire process, from production and procurement to your doorstep.
Find your nearest retailer
You can find Bunzlau Castle retailers all over the world. Our retailers are located in various countries where you are more than welcome to find the right products that will complete your collection.
