Smokeb omb Photo g r aphy I have seen other photographers and models post their smoke bomb photos and I wondered how these images were created. Were they difficult to achieve? How does the smoke affect your camera settings? There is never a better way to learn a new element than hands on, surrounded by other photographers from whom you can learn and grow. With these questions in mind, this became March’s group shoot. Our first location was amazing. It also taught me to get all location permissions in writing. We packed up all our gear and lighting and set off to the original location. By this point, the weather had turned gloomy and began to sprinkle. When we arrived at the original location, the rain was not our only obstacle at the lake, but now we had to battle the wind. The lake water was crashing along the rocks and shore. The abandoned road at the boat dock provided just enough coverage from the elements and created an amazing backdrop. Melody Gilmore, Sheri Armstrong, and Jerzie Langlitz showed up ready to rock the theme. Melody’s one-piece backless romper and heels looked amazing with every color of smoke. Sheri looked fierce in her leather jacket. Her skull glass and enchanted book allowed us to capture an eerie element with the smoke bombs. Jerzie is a new minor model and took this shoot as an opportunity to develop her posing and direction from the other models and photographers. She is eager to learn from others. The amazing Ken Blackwell of Ken Blackwell Photography was in attendance. His finished images as well as his straight out of camera shots are phenomenal. William Gregory of Popsarazzee Photography joined us. William was new to one of our group shoots but quickly fell into place. He was an amazing photographer who stepped out of his comfort zone and joined us during this shoot. Melody’s husband also joined us during this shoot as a way to get more practice from his camera. Despite all the obstacles, great images were created. The smoke bomb group shoot was a successful one and hopefully more will be able to attend if this theme ever comes around again. A special thank you to Lee Crumley for coming and being the smoke generator.

Steampunk has always been a fascinating genre for me. The props, outfits, and scenery remind me of a past era in which I would have loved to experience. Steampunk has gained popularity and is not only a genre, but a lifestyle for some. Steampunk is a genre in which modern technology such as iPads, computers, and phones are powered by steam during the 1800s. It is a theme that inspired a movement of creativity and imagination. It asks the question of how an item can be transformed into that of elegance. Items most would see as trash or junk are transformed into a new item. In November of 2017, I hosted my first steampunk group shoot. Now in 2019, I get the chance to host another steampunk group shoot. The location was such a big hit the first time, I have decided to host the event there again this year. The event will be held at The Grove, Texas. The Grove, Texas was established in 1859, and was a thriving town until the highway bypassed the town during 1940, forcing many farmers to relocate. Today the property consists of five buildings: the bank, the General Store, the Post Office, the Cocklebur Saloon, and the Blacksmith shop. In the center of the town is a well that was dug in the mid 1860s by pick and crowbar. Legend says that the first 12 feet of the well was almost solid rock. Water was not found until the well was 28 feet deep. The well is still wet and has never run dry. The Grove is a Historical Museum Town and is listed with the Smithsonian Institute.

The Process of My Artistic Expression By: Cynthia Azzam

I love photographing candid situations and behind the scenes action. More than anything I love photographing people and their expressions and portrait photography became my specialty. I love color, I love glamour and I love drama and most of all I love to combine them. My style is Hollywood glamour, chic yet quirky, whimsical and elegant. I capture the shots in camera enough to get the exposure and focus right, and then get creative in editing the photos afterwards. I have what you would call a moody style, I like my images with contrast, and structure. I look at the photos and then decide how it will look. Light and airy is not my style, I prefer darker with low light and prominent highlights.

I like increased shadows in the corners to bring out the contrast and make the subject’s face stand out. I love Film Noir style and I do lots of black and white with contrast. A typical photoshoot will take a couple of hours, I would capture approximately 100 photos and will edit about 20-30. I deliver all edited photos and most will be moody in style including black and white, few of them will be true to color and maybe one or two at the most will be hazy and light. I use Lightroom editing software including their own built in presets, I also use “Silver Efex” for black and white and “Alien Skin” editing software for my vintage portraits. In the end one must be confident in their style. In knowing who you are, you develop your style.

CHOSING THEMES Choosing themes to fit everyone is often impossible. Remember, it’s not about the number of attendees, but the quality of the images you are able to create.

Themes can be based off many things; colors, eras, causes, events, and locations.

Think outside the box. Choose themes that push you, excite you, and sometimes even scare you a little, but ultimately teach you.

CONFESSIONS AND BLOOPERS

Not All It’s Cracked Up To Be

Panties Optional Once at a shoot, I got out to get my wardrobe out of the trunk of my car and a breeze blew and up my dress went. That was the day panties no longer became optional. It’s a good thing I am not bashful. -anonymous

During my very first ever car club event (pictured), all the cars were lined up in a row with a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake. I climbed a steep hill once the shoot began to capture a shot of the entire club together. Snap, Snap, Snap. I get my images. I turned around to go down the steep incline and I fell. Hard. The rest of the three-hour long shoot, I was in horrible pain. Nevertheless, I was determined to get my images. It was not until I sat down in my car that I knew something was wrong. Off to the emergency room I went. Diagnosis...a cracked tailbone and a donut to sit on.

Confessions My biggest pet peeve and something I advocate against at my group events is over the shoulder shooting. I have ended friendships over this very thing.
