List of Premier League Managers Managers in the Premier League are involved in the day to day running of the team, including the training, team selection, and player acquisition. Their influence varies from club-to-club and is related to the ownership of the club and the relationship of the manager with fans. Managers are required to have a UEFA Pro License which is the final coaching qualification available, and follows the completion of the UEFA ‘B’ and ‘A’ Licences. The UEFA Pro Licence is required by every person who wishes to manage a club in the Premier League on a permanent basis (i.e. more than 12 weeks – the amount of time an unqualified caretaker manager is allowed to take control). Caretaker appointments are managers that fill the gap between a managerial departure and a new appointment. Several caretaker managers have gone on to secure a permanent managerial post after performing well as a caretaker; examples include Paul Hart at Portsmouth and David Pleat at Tottenham Hotspur. Only one manager, Alex Ferguson, has remained in his position since the formation of the Premier League in 1992. Arsène Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal in the Premier League since 1996, while David Moyes has been Everton’s manager since 2002. The most recent appointment was André Villas-Boas of Chelsea. No English manager has won the Premier League; the five managers to have won the title comprise two Scots Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United, twelve wins) and Kenny Dalglish (Blackburn Rovers, one win), a Frenchman (Arsène Wenger, Arsenal, three wins), a Portuguese (José Mourinho, Chelsea, two wins) and an Italian (Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea, one win). Currently 15 of the managers are from the British Isles, with seven of them coming from Scotland and five from England.

ABOUT ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE The Premier League is an English professional league for association football clubs. At the top of the English football league system, it is the country’s primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with The Football League. The Premier League is a corporation in which the 20 member clubs act as shareholders. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 38 matches each, totaling 380 matches in the season. Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. It was known as the Premiership from 1993 to 2007. It is currently sponsored by Barclays Bank and therefore officially known as the Barclays Premier League. The competition formed as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from The Football League, which was originally founded in 1888, and take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal. The Premier League has since become the world’s most watched association football league. It is the world’s most lucrative football league in terms of revenue, with combined club revenues of over £2 billion in 2008–09. It is ranked first in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coefficients of leagues based on performances in European competitions over the last five years, ahead of Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga. Since 1888, a total of 23 clubs have been crowned champions
of the English football system. Of the 44 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, four have won the title: Manchester United (12 titles) Arsenal (3), Chelsea (3) and Blackburn Rovers (1). The current champions are Manchester United, who won the title in the 2010–11 season. A HISTORY OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE It is the world’s most watched league and the most lucrative - attracting the top players from all over the globe. Hard to believe then that the first ball kicked in the Premier League was as relatively recently as 15th August 1992. The 1980s saw a nadir in English football. Stadiums were crumbling and hooliganism was rife. English teams were banned from Europe following the death of 39 fans at Heysel Stadium in Belgium ahead of Liverpool’s European Cup Final against Juventus in 1985. Few of the world’s top players would even contemplate playing their trade in England. Then in 1989 came Hillsborough and the Taylor report. 96 fans died and over 150 were injured - crushed during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Lord Justice Taylor recommended a complete overhaul in the way football grounds were run and structured - leading to the introduction of all-seater stadia. The most successful team in Premier League history is undoubtedly Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson’s sides have won a remarkable 12 titles and have never finished

MATCH BALL Nike Seitiro Premier League Ball: Nike’s T90 Tracer from last season is replaced this season with the nee Seitiro ball, which is the first ball since 2003/04 not to carry the T90 mark. At first glance the new Seitiro is very different to its predecessors and features Nike RaDaR technology, which stands for Rapid Decisive and Response. The lab and field tested standard of visual performance allows players to see the ball better due to the combination of graphic design and contrast which creates an optimal visual signal picture on pitch.Validated on pitch with some of the best athletes in the world, the combination of ball casing color, graphic design, and contrast creates an optimal visual signal on the pitch. What does this all mean? It means that NIKE RaDaR allows players to make faster decisions on the pitch and stay ahead of the pace of the game. The micro-textured synthetic casing on the Nike Seitiro ball creates a golf ball dimple effect delivers confident accuracy and aerodynamic stability as airflow is equalized over the ball surface allowing players to have total control of the flight and movement of the ball. Geometric Precision
and GEO II balanced technology distributes pressure around the ball for a 360 degree sweet spot for a consistent, accurate and powerful strike. Cross-linked NitrogenExpanded Foam, Nike claims this ball will offer exceptional shape retention and durability. The bladder consists of six-wing carbon latex for explosive acceleration. AWARDS The Premier League Trophy: The current Premier League trophy was created by Royal Jewellers Asprey of London. It weighs 4 st (25 kg; 56 lb), and is 76 cm (30 in) tall, 43 cm (17 in) wide and 25 cm (9.8 in) deep. Its main body is solid sterling silver and silver gilt, while its plinth is made of malachite, a semi-precious stone. The plinth has a silver band around its circumference, upon which the names of the title-winning clubs are listed. Malachite’s green colour is also representative of the green field of play. The design of the trophy is based on the heraldry of Three Lions that is associated with English football. Two of the lions are found above the handles on either side of the trophy – the third is symbolized by the captain of the title winning team as he raises the trophy, and its gold crown, above his head at the end of the season. The trophy has borne several names on its face since it was first created, when it read “The F.A. Premier League”. The one Manchester United lifted in 2006–07 read “The Barclays Premiership”. From the 2007–08 season onwards, the trophy has read “Premier League” on one side and “Barclays Premier League” on the other. In 2004, a special gold version of the trophy was commissioned to commemorate Arsenal winning the title without a single defeat. Monthly and Annual In addition to the winner’s Trophy and the individual Winner’s Medals, the Premier League also awards the monthly, Manager of the Month and Player of the Month awards, and the annual Manager of the Year, Golden Boot and the Golden Glove awards.
The current Premier League trophy was created by Royal Jewellers Asprey of London. It weighs 4 st (25 kg; 56 lb), and is 76 cm (30 in) tall, 43 cm (17 in) wide and 25 cm (9.8 in) deep.
League Format: • The English Premier League season begins in August and ends in May with no winter break. • The 20 teams play each other twice (home and away) for a total of 38 matches. • 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. • Final league position is based on the total number of points earned over the full season. • The team with the most points is considered the league champion. • The bottom three teams are relegated to the second-tier Football League Championship.

Villa also won the 1981–82 European Cup, one of only four English clubs to win what is now the UEFA Champions League. Aston Villa has the fourth highest total of major honours won by an English club.

Introduction: Blackburn Rovers Football Club is an English professional association football club based in the town of Blackburn, Lancashire. The team currently competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. The club was established in 1875, becoming a founding member of The Football League in 1888. It is one of only three clubs to have been both a founder member of the Football League and the Premier League (the others being Aston Villa and Everton). In 1890 Rovers moved to its permanent home at Ewood Park. Prior to the formation of the Premier League in 1992, most of the club’s successes were before 1930, when it had gained league and FA Cup trophies on several occasions. Relegation in 1966 was followed by 26 successive seasons of football outside the top flight.

(signed):
Introduction: Fulham Football Club is a professional English Premier League club based in Fulham, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Founded in 1879, they play in the Premier League, their 10th current season. Fulham is the oldest professional football team in London. The club has spent twenty-four seasons in English football’s top division, the majority of that in two spells during the 1960s and 2000s. The latter spell was associated with chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed, after the club had climbed up from League Two (then Division Three) in the 1990s. Fulham has never won a major honour, although they had reached two major finals. In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2–0 to West Ham United. Fulham reached the 2010 Europa League final, which they contested with Atlético Madrid in Hamburg, losing 2–1 after extra time.

After finishing as FA Cup runners-up in 1981, the club went through a period of decline culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football in 1997. Other honours include winning the League Cup in 1967, being runners-up in the old First Division in 1975–76 and reaching the final of the FA Cup in 1982. Introduction: Sunderland Association Football Club is an English Premier League association football club based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Since its formation in 1879, the club has won six First Division titles—in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913, and 1936— and the FA Cup twice, in 1937 and 1973. The Sunderland team won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3–1 victory over Preston North End, and remained in the top league for 80;successive seasons (spanning 68 years because of the war years’ interruption) until they were relegated for the first time in 1958. Sunderland’s most notable trophy after the Second World War was their second FA Cup in 1973, when the club secured a 1–0 victory over Leeds United. The team has won the second tier title five times in that period and the third tier title once. Sunderland play their home games at the 49,000 capacity all-seater Stadium of Light having moved from Roker Park in 1997. The original ground capacity was 42,000 which was increased to 49,000 following redevelopment in 2000. Sunderland have a long-standing rivalry with their neighbouring club Newcastle United, with whom they have contested the Tyne–Wear derby since 1898.

(signed):
Introduction: Swansea City Association Football Club (Welsh: Clwb Pêl-droed Dinas Abertawe) are a Welsh professional football club based in Swansea. Formed in 1912 they joined the Football League in 1921, and have been members ever since. They played in the old Football League First Division between 1981 and 1983, finishing fifth in their first season. In 2010–11 they were promoted to the Premier League, after winning the Football League Championship play-offs, and will become the first Welsh club to play in the division. The club was known as Swansea Town until 1969, when it adopted the name Swansea City to reflect Swansea’s new status as a city. Since 2005 Swansea City have played their home games at the Liberty Stadium, a ground they share with the Ospreys Rugby Union Club. Before 2005 the club’s home ground was Vetch Field. Swansea City and its supporters are unofficially known as ‘Jacks’. One explanation for this name is that during the 17th century, sailors from Swansea were respected and any ‘Swansea Jack’ was allowed to join the crew based simply on the town’s reputation for good sailors. Many, however, believe that the name originates from the renowned life-saving dog Swansea Jack.

(signed):
Introduction: Tottenham Hotspur Football Club commonly referred to as Spurs, are an English Premier League association football club based in Tottenham, North London. The club’s home stadium is White Hart Lane. Founded in 1882, Tottenham won the FA Cup for the first time in 1901, making them the only non-League club to do so since the formation of the Football League. Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both competitions in the 1960–61 season. After successfully defending the FA Cup in 1962, in 1963 they became the first British club to win a UEFA club competition – the European Cup Winners’ Cup.[2] In 1967 they won the FA Cup for a third time in the 1960s. In the 1970s they won the League Cup on two occasions and were the inaugural winners of the UEFA Cup in 1972, becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies. In the 1980s Spurs won several trophies: the FA Cup twice, FA Community Shield and the UEFA Cup in 1984. In the 1990s they won the FA Cup and the League Cup.When they won the League Cup once more in 2008, it meant that they had won a major trophy in each of the last six decades – an achievement only matched by Manchester United.

Introduction: West Bromwich Albion Football Club also known as West Brom, The Baggies, The Throstles, or WBA, are an English Premier League association football club based in West Bromwich, West Midlands. The club was formed in 1878 by workers from Salter’s Spring Works in West Bromwich, and have played their home games at The Hawthorns since 1900. Albion were one of the founding members of The Football League in 1888 and have spent the majority of their existence in the top tier of English football. They have been champions of England once, in 1919–20, but have had more success in the FA Cup, with five wins. The first came in 1888, the year the league was founded, and the most recent in 1968, their last major trophy. They also won the Football League Cup at the first attempt in 1966. The club’s longest consecutive period in the top divison was between 1949 and 1973, and from 1986 to 2002 they spent their longest ever period out of the top division. The 2011–12 season will be their sixth season in the Premier League since 2002.

Introduction: Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, or simply Wolves, is an English professional association football club representing the city of Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands region of England, and currently playing in the Premier League. The club was founded in 1877 and since 1889 has played at Molineux. Historically, Wolves have been highly influential, most notably as being founder members of the Football League, as well as having played an instrumental role in the establishment of the European Cup, later to become the UEFA Champions League. Having won the FA Cup twice before the outbreak of the First World War, Wolves consolidated their reputation as a top side under the legendary management of ex-player Stan Cullis after the Second World War, going on to win the league three times and the FA Cup twice between 1949 and 1960. It was at this time that the European Cup competition was established, after the English press declared Wolves “Champions of the World” following their victories against such top European and World sides as South Africa, Racing, Spartak Moscow, and Honvéd in some of football’s first live televised games.
