The 2011 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 4 or the 2011 IPL, will be the fourth season of the Indian Premier League, established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. The tournament will be hosted by India and the opening ceremony will be held in Chepauk Stadium, Chennai, the home venue for 2010 Champions Chennai Super Kings. The season will run from April 8 to May 28 2011. The season saw the addition of new teams the Pune Warriors and Indi Commandos Kerala.
Format With the introduction of 2 new teams, a new ten-team format was created. This new format consists of 74 matches and was introduced as retaining the previous format would result in 94 matches, significantly greater than the 60 matches from the previous season, where teams compete in a double round-robin tournament. The knockout stage was changed to a playoff format. If a match ends in a tie, a Super Over will be played to determine the winner. The ten teams are divided into two groups of five. In the group stage, each team plays 14 games: facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times. A random draw would determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice. A four-game playoff stage is held after the group stage.

Fourth season On 21 March 2010, it was announced in Chennai that two new teams from Pune and Kochi will be added to the IPL for the fourth season. However, the bid around the Kochi franchisee turned controversial resulting in the resignation of minister, Shashi Tharoor from the Central Government and investigations by various departments of the Government of India into the financial dealings of IPL and the other existing franchisees. Later, Lalit Modi was also
removed from IPL chairmanship by BCCI. On 5 December 2010, it was confirmed that Kochi will take part in the fourth season of IPL. In October 2010, the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab had their franchises terminated for breaching ownership rules. The new Kochi franchise was also issued a warning to resolve all their ownership disputes. The addition of teams representing Pune and Kochi was to have increased the number of franchises from 8 to 10. The
BCCI originally considered extending the tournament format used in previous season to ten teams, which would increase the number of matches from 60 to 94. Instead, the round-robin stage of the tournament was to have been replaced by a group stage with two groups of five, limiting the number of matches to 74. In December 2010, it was announced that Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals would take part in the 2011 edition of the IPL per court order.

Pune and Kochi are new to the league. The auction for these teams was held at Chennai on 22 March 2010. These two bids, worth a total of Rs 3,235 crore, were more than the Rs 2,853 crore collectively paid for the eight franchises in the first auction, on 24 January 2008. The Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab were temporarily ejected from the league due to issues with their unreported ownership changes. The teams were reinstated with involvement from the High Court. Their owners were broken into several legal entities when the BCCI required the incorporation of the companies. Kochi was also at risk of ejection for the same reasons before BCCI cleared their new ownership pattern for the tournament.

Four games will be played in the playoffs: • Game A, between the teams ranked first and second in the group stage. • Game B, between the teams ranked third and fourth in the group stage. • Game C, between the loser of Game A and winner of Game B. • Final, between the winners of Games A and C.

The Chennai Super Kings are a part of the Indian Premier League, made up of 10 teams. The franchise is currently owned by India Cements, who paid US $91 million to acquire the rights to the franchise for 10 years in 2008. N. Srinivasan, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements Ltd., is the de facto owner of the Chennai Super Kings, by means of his position within the company. He is also the Secretary of the BCCI. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, former captain of the Indian Cricket Team, is the brand ambassador for the franchise at present, and former Indian opener V. B. Chandrasekhar is the Chief Selector. To gather more support from local fans, actor Joseph Vijay and actress Nayantara were also appointed as ambassadors. Nayantara was later removed because she could not attend matches. Vijay served as the brand Ambassador till the end of the 2009 season and has since then given up his position due to his other commitments.

The Deccan Chronicle
The Deccan Chargers franchise is owned by the Deccan Chronicle corporation. The media group acquired the franchise for an amount of USD 107 million on 24 January 2008. Later, another media group, Group M India picked up a 20% stake in the franchise. The team’s name reflects the association with the Deccan Chronicle newspaper, which in turn derives its name from the Deccan plateau that makes up the majority of the southern portion of the Indian peninsula. The Chargers logo is a charging bull. From the 2009 season, the team changed the colour of the jersey (from beige and black to sparkling silver and blue) and the logo (from gold and red to white and blue). There were reports suggesting a buyout of the franchise by Gujarat based Adani Group for a sum of $300 million, almost three times the value the team was purchased for initially.

During the franchise auction for the Indian Premier League teams, the GMR Group purchased the Delhi Daredevils for $84 million. In the second season, they rode high on the strength of Dirk Nannes’ pace, topped the league, but again, lost in the semis. Gambhir has now stepped in as captain after Sehwag decided to step down. Dehi have bought out Oz legend Glenn McGrath before the third season. They picked up Wayne Parnell, the South African left-arm pacer for a whopping USD 610,000 at the 2010 auction. They also included the U-19 player Manan Sharma in their ranks.

Kochi Cricket Pvt Ltd
Indi Commandos Kerala is an Indian Premier League team based in the city of Kochi, a major seaport located on the south-west coast of India by the Arabian Sea, in Ernakulam district of the state of Kerala. The team was one of two new franchisees added to the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2011 season, alongside the Sahara Pune Warriors. The team franchise is owned by Kochi Cricket Pvt Ltd., which is a consortium of multiple companies. The franchise has been at the centre of many controversies since its inception. BCCI had given the franchise ultimatum to dissolve factionalism and infighting or face scrapping. After a series of lengthy meetings the company sent a letter to the BCCI requesting more time stating that the negotiations were in an advanced stage and they needed some more time to be sorted. The BCCI announced that on 27 October it would decide the fate of the Indi Commandos and the BCCI insisted that the two cases of the Indi Commandos and Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals which were expelled are different. The IPL Governing council decided to give them a 30-day termination notice which meant that the franchise would have to reply to the notice within 30 days and if the IPL accepted their agreement then the franchise would no longer face the prospect of being terminated . The Kochi promoters submitted a letter to the BCCI officials with regard to the revised structure of agreement hammered out between them. The BCCI governing council meeting was held on 28 Nov 2010 at Nagpur to decide the fate of Kochi franchisee. Mts Wkts S/R Econ

Kolkata Knight Riders is the franchise representing Kolkata in the Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 cricket tournament. Till IPL3, the team was led by Sourav Ganguly, who unfortunately remained unsold for the fourth season, and coached by Dav Whatmore. Sourav Ganguly was the team’s Icon Player for the first three seasons. The official theme of the team is Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re (Bengali for We will do it, Fight for it, Win it) and the official colors are purple and gold. As per the recent study done by a UK based brand valuation company, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are ranked as the second most valuable franchise brand at US$46 million. Celebrity co-owner Shahrukh Khan’s hard-selling of the KKR brand has counteracted the team’s poor on-field performance.Franchise History Owner Shahrukh Khan (left) with Sourav Ganguly, and Gauri Khan, wife of Shahrukh Khan.

Reliance Industries Limited
Mumbai Indians is a franchise cricket team representing Mumbai in the Indian Premier League. The team is one of the ten founding members of the IPL in 2008. Mumbai Indians are currently led by Sachin Tendulkar, who is the Icon Player for the team. Reliance Industries Limited purchased the rights for the Mumbai franchise of Indian Premier league for a total of Rs. 441 Cr ($ 112.9 m) during the auction on 24 January 2008. In what has been described by some as “the ultimate heights of laziness in name selection” and “like they chose the name by throwing darts on a wall” the franchise was eventually named the Mumbai Indians. While this is arguably a “tour de force” in ineptitude, the name does acknowledge that people from Mumbai are largely Indian, which in the club’s defence, is somewhat true. The RIL bid has made the Mumbai Indians the most expensive franchise in IPL, and hence won the right to hold the semi-finals and the final in Mumbai. The team was unveiled on the 17th of April, 2008 in Mumbai

The Rajasthan Royals franchise is owned and chaired by Manoj Badale. Other investors include Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya S Chellaram and Suresh Chellaram. The Group acquired the franchise for $67 million. Incidentally, this was the least expensive franchise in the Indian Premier League and probably the least fancied team in the league at the beginning of the tournament. Bollywood actress and Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty and her business partner (now husband) Raj Kundra paid approximately US $15.4 million for a 11.7% stake before the start of IPL 2 in early 2009, therefore valuing the team at $130 million. It made a pre-tax proďŹ t of $7.5 million in 2009. The IPL has terminated the agreement with Rajasthan Royals on 10th October 2010 along with Kings Punjab for violations in agreement and breach of contract on the part of the franchise. BCCI president Shashank Manohar made clear that this expulsion is permanent and owners would not be given second chance.

Royal Challengers Bangalore is a cricket team based in Bangalore that plays in the Indian Premier League. The team is owned by Vijay Mallya, through his flagship firm UB Groupand coached by Ray Jennings. Franchise history Indian Premier League is a cricket tournament being organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and backed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). For the inaugural tournament held in Apr-Jun 2008, the BCCI had finalised a list of 8 teams who will be participating in the tournament. The teams representing 8 different cities of India, including Bangalore, were put up on auction in Mumbai on 20 February 2008 and the Bangalore team was won by Vijay Mallya, who paid US$111.6 million for it. This was the second highest bid for a team in the IPL, next only to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries’ bid of $111.9 million for the Mumbai team. Bollywood actresses Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone, and Sandalwood film stars Ramya and Puneeth Rajkumar are the brand ambassadors of the team.
