DON’T MISS THE BEDFORD FESTIVAL FRINGE THIS SUMMER! From 23rd July - 1st August, over 90 acts and 200+ performers from around the globe will showcase their talent on the Bedford Festival Fringe stage, Bedford School’s brand new town centre based theatre, The Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s. Hosting a wide range of events such as comedy, live music, theatre, dance, spoken word, film, workshops and poetry there are acts from as far as China, USA and South Africa visiting our town as well as homegrown talent.

As part of the fun, Bedford Film Festival Brings a huge man-eating shark and talking Bear to Bedfringe! Bedford Film Festival will be bringing a huge man-eating shark and a talking bear to Bedford as it screens two films chosen by film lovers in the town, Jaws and The Jungle Book, during Bedfringe 2015. The films were nominated as part of Bedford Film Festival’s film ‘election’ which saw film lovers across the town pick their favourites from a list of 10 classics. The Jungle Book - 30th July at 10am This Disney animated, musical classic, nominated by Emma Garrett, Co-Director Kiosk at the Park and Pavilion at the Park, tells the story of Mowgli a human child who is raised by a family of wolves and guided back to a nearby man-village by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the Panther. Jaws - 31st July at 8.30pm Steven Spielberg’s classic adaptation of the best-selling book was nominated by Sarah Cox, Editor of Bedfordshire on Sunday. When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it. Jaws is considered by many to be perfect cinema. Both films will be screened at the brand new Quarry Theatre at St. Luke’s. Co-Founding Director of Bedford Film Festival, Paul Hutchinson, said: “We’re so excited to bring these classic films to Bedford for our Bedfringe screenings, and even more so because they’ve been chosen by film lovers in the town. This will be a perfect warm up to our full festival, which this year runs from 11 September – 14 October 2015.” Tickets for both films can be purchased at www.BedfordFilmFestival.org and are priced between £3 and £6.50 ADVERTISING OFFERS - ARTICLES & LOCAL NEWS – WHAT’S ON EVENTS – NOTICEBOARD – BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Bedfordshire Games, July 7th

I

The annual athletics meeting for teenagers and adults with severe learning disabilities.

n 1989, a group of people who worked with pupils with severe learning disabilities (SLD) and complex and profound multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) were concerned with the sparseness of athletic events in Bedfordshire for them once they left school. An athletic meeting was organised in July that year for teenagers and adults with SLD and it was so successful that it has been held every year since then and continues to give great pleasure to hundreds of competitors. Since then, 100’s of people with SLD and PMLD in Bedfordshire have been given the opportunity to take part in an athletic event which is meaningful, relevant and enjoyable and where they feel valued. The Games also play an important role in raising the awareness of those outside the learning disability community of the abilities of all the competitors. The event is always held on the first Tuesday in July at Bedford International Athletic Stadium. In 2014, approximately 330 competitors participated in a total of 74 track and field events; competitors take part in activities that are appropriate to their needs and abilities so they are able to achieve their potential. The event is organised by a small committee of volunteers and this year the committee received the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire’s Citizenship Award and in 2013 they were presented with the Bedford Borough Council Disability Sports Award. As well as the work of the committee, the continuing success of the event is dependent on the involvement of groups in Bedfordshire who work with teenagers and adults with SLD/PMLD. The Games involve not only competitors from adult care centres, day resource centres, residential care homes and special schools, but also NHS and local authority employees who are specifically involved with adults with learning disabilities. Track and field marshals on the day represent the wider community, including local upper schools and Police Community Support Officers. The awarding of medals by specially invited guests helps to

St Johns School students

reinforce the importance of the event and that it is valued by all. Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation funded the 2014 and 2015 games. The 2014 event was also supported by the Bedford Borough Council Members’ Ward Fund. Support this year includes the printing of the programmes by Bedford College. Many other donations have been received in previous years, from MENCAP, Bedford Lions, Bedford Masons, MacIntyre Care Homes and Home Farm Trust Family and Friends. We are always very grateful for the continuing support we receive. Please do come along to support us and enjoy the day on the 7th July!

Three Bedfordshire organisations have won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities. The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2nd June- the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. The QAVS is described by the Cabinet Office as “the MBE for volunteer groups”

Bedford and District Handicapped Rider’s Association (BDHRA) at Willington Offering riding as therapy to disabled adults and children, it has been entirely led by volunteers for over 53 years and operates from a purpose-built riding centre which was recently refurbished following a successful fund-raising campaign.

Mr Mike Tyler and his wife Elizabeth from BDHRA attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May where they met the Queen and other winners of this year’s award. www.bdhra.co.uk

The Airfield Volunteer Fire Service at Old Warden Aerodrome

The Airfield Volunteer Fire Service was formed in 1994 and, 21 years on, is considered to be one of the best and highly respected Lower Category Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services in the UK. Their work ‘protecting the world’s aviation heritage’ is widely recognised within aviation circles. The members offer dedication, commitment and hard work to ensure that the service maintains and develops this status. There is a very clear ambition to achieve the highest standards and to develop further to provide a volunteer fire service for the benefit of the public and in particular to the Shuttleworth Collection and the communities of Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas. www.avfs.org

The Forest of Marston Vale at Marston Moretaine

Volunteers are the life blood of the Vale and carry out a wide variety of tasks, all contributing to the creation and maintenance of the Forest. As ever, they are the friendly face of the Forest for this and so much more. Two of their volunteers, Joan Ferguson and Nigel Davis also attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace this May. “I’m thrilled that our volunteer group has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service” said Nick Webb the Forest of Marston Vale Trust’s CEO. “Well over 100 people regularly volunteer time and skills to help create this wonderful Community Forest and they are an absolutely vital part of our team. We’re always looking for more volunteers, so please get in touch”. www.marstonvale.org The presentation of all awards will be made later in the summer by the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, on behalf of the Queen.

‘YOPEY’s’ - Bedfordshire Young People of the Year Awards celebrate 10 year Anniversary

T

he YOPEYs – Oscars for young people who ‘give to others’ – were set up by former national newspaper journalist Tony Gearing.

10-25, live, work or study in the county and ‘give to others’ they can enter. What form this giving takes is up to the nominator, who can also be the young person themselves. Entries close on July 31st.

Tony said, “I was fed up with the bad press my industry gave young people but then I had a flash of inspiration. The very same skills that were being used to condemn young people could also be used to praise them.”

This year’s YOPEY is called Atlas Young People of the Year after main sponsor Atlas Converting Equipment, of Wolseley Road, Woburn Road Ind Estate in Kempston. Managing Director Alan Johnson said: “YOPEY is an excellent platform for young people to shine in our community. The level of commitment, compassion and hard work shown by these young people deserves to be celebrated and rewarded and should act as inspiration to us all, both young and old.”

‘YOPEY’ was started by Tony and other supporters to give young people a fairer image in the media – and society as a whole – by ‘revealing, recognising and rewarding’ young unsung heroes and setting them up as positive role models for other young people to follow. Previous winner include 2006 Becky Ladds, 17 at the time, who was helping her parents care for three siblings with autism at home in Dunstable; 2008 Sabath Shazia, then 18, who raised thousands for good causes and still volunteers for charities – including as a YOPEY trustee; 2009 Danny Kiteley, then 21, from Arlesey, who organised discos throughout mid Beds to keep young people off the streets and reduce anti-social behaviour; 2012 Hannah Sharman, then 17, who led the setting up of a youth club in Potton where there was little for young people to do; 2014 Aaron Scholes, 24, grew up in care and now leads Bedford Sea Cadets. Since 2005, hundreds of young people have entered the Bedfordshire-wide competition. If they are aged

Bedfordshire Police have donated to this year’s campaign through the Police and Crime Commissioner and Bedfordshire Police Partnership charity. Chief Constable Colette Paul said, “We know there are selfless teenagers willing to go the extra mile to help our communities and it is absolutely appropriate that this is recognised and celebrated.” Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, said: “YOPEY has played a significant role in helping us to celebrate our fantastic young people. Over 10 years we have seen them strive to help us build everstronger communities. Congratulations to YOPEY and all who have participated” If you would like to nominate a young person or enter yourself, please visit Please Scan the page to www.youngpeopleoftheyear.org watch the video

The MS Therapy Centre – Self Help is our Way of Action

What is MS?

M

S is the most common neurological condition affecting young adults. MS affects the central nervous system (CNS) which comprises the brain and spinal cord, which together form the body’s communication network. MS means ‘many scars’ – these scars prevent messages being passed along this network interfering with a range of functions. Symptoms experienced depend on the position and extent of the scarring, no two people will have exactly the same set of symptoms. Instead of trying to cope with the many facets of the condition on your own, the MS Therapy Centre is here to try and alleviate your fears and provide professional support and therapy as and when required.

Who we are

How we started

We are a purpose built self-funding therapy centre that supports people that have Multiple Sclerosis in our local community, we currently provide therapy and support to over 1,000 members in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, with approximately 350 people attending weekly for therapy and support. Anyone with MS living in Beds or Northants area is welcome to use the facilities at the Centre. The person with MS may phone the Centre directly, or they may be referred by their Neurologist, Doctor, Social Worker or friend.

The MS Therapy Centre was first set up in 1983 for people with MS by people with MS with the aim being to provide all the therapies, services and support needed for people with multiple sclerosis to manage their condition.

Therapies include; MS Specialist Nurse, Neuro physiotherapy, Orthotics, specialised gym, Hydrotherapy, Counselling, Complementary therapies; Reflexology, Shiatsu massage, Pilates and Yoga. Oxygen therapy, dietician, continence advice and bladder clinic. We also provide services such as loan of equipment and some transport for those living in surrounding towns.

Opened from a small industrial unit in Murdock Road, Bedford, and now in our own purpose built therapy centre in Barkers Lane due to an increased demand for services. As a huge achievement for a small charity receiving no statutory funding, it could not have happened without the generosity of local people and business. We have to raise approximately £350,000 each year in order to provide our services. We do not charge for therapy but encourage our members to donate to us and to help with the great amount of annual fund raising. We are truly a selfhelp organisation.

A Personal view by Millie Peters

“Imagine a place that feels more like a relaxed home where experiences are Volunteers are our lifeline and their help is invaluable; shared, where people leave with a boost there are many ways you can get involved. We have and friendships are formed These are just in house volunteers with a variety of roles including some of the reasons I’ve volunteered as Receptionist, Retail Assistants, Oxygen operators, the receptionist for the last 22 years. As a Gym assistants and Fundraising Assistant midwife previously, the feeling of being We also have volunteers that offer their time at our useful is tremendously important to events, roles including Collections at local businesses, me, helping at the centre gives me great Refreshments, Manning an activity, Setting up and fulfilment, meeting similar people with MS clearing down, Baking cakes, Making craft items, and seeing how the centre benefits them Selling tickets, being a Santa! and how it improves their day to day lives. You can volunteer however much time you can, from I have MS and use the facilities here too 2 hours to 2 days! We would be delighted to hear and after 22 years of volunteering I feel that from you. alone speaks volumes of the kind of place Organising an Event the MS Therapy Centre is.” This is a great way to raise funds for our centre. You can complete a personal challenge like a sky dive, bike ride or a husky run or run your own event such as a coffee morning, mufti day, an afternoon tea, Family Fun Day, BBQ’S or even a Ball!

Is your work proving to be a pain in the neck?

Y

ou can spend a fortune on an ergonomically built chair, but it won’t help if have to sit in it all day and if you tend to hunch over your desk. In fact sitting stationary for hours on end doesn’t only cause physical pain but also lessens productivity levels, as well as reducing mental efficiency.

Sorrel Pindar

The body is designed to have its centre of support at the core and the legs, but we don’t engage them when working at a desk. Instead, we shift our support centre up to the base of our neck, upper back and shoulders. This causes these areas to tighten and elevate, pulling our shoulder blades up and apart. This leads to postural problems, weakness, and upper back and neck pain. Discover five tips to straighten out these problems below. 1. Take a three minute break every 30 minutes… breathe into your abdomen, stand up and mobilise your neck & shoulders and go for a walk (even just to the coffee machine) 2. Avoid over-using tablets and laptops… use a monitor or big screen whenever you can 3. Think about your posture… make sure your work station is set up so that you are at the right height, and sit up straight with your back supported, shoulders back and down, and your head balanced on your shoulders, instead of poking forwards 4. Start in the middle… do Pilates or yoga to keep your core muscles strong 5. Don’t be an e-addict… if you spend your day at a desk in front of a screen, go for a walk in the evening instead of flopping in front of the TV or tablet. If you believe you are doing everything right and you are still experiencing persistent neck or upper back pain, it is best to see a professional such as an osteopath. It may be that there are areas of restriction in your spine which are putting pressure on your neck. In this case treatment of the whole body will be more effective than simply working on the neck and shoulders.

Wonderful Wisterias and Clematis in and around Bedford

F

ew sights are more arresting than that of a Wisteria covering a wall or pergola – the pictures on the Layar slideshow this month will confirm this. In blues, mauves and even white, the blossoms cascade down – and the scent is amazing. Wisterias can also be grown as ‘standard’ plants. This means they have a central stem and leaves and branches growing out and cascading down from the top. Heights are usually around 2 metres tall. Colours are the same as climbing varieties and the plant can add unusual interest and height to a patio or border. The deep blue Wisteria pictured on a pergola with white chairs beneath it was taken in the garden of the Retirement Education Centre at 6, Rothesay Road in Bedford. People aged over 50 can attend courses on weekdays but any age can attend at weekends. It’s a great social centre with a good cafe also. Courses there are many and varied with gardening, languages, history, psychology, arts and many others to choose from. Most of the other app pictures were taken at Kathy Brown’s garden, at Stevington. She opens this every Tuesday in summer and generously opens at other times, the proceeds going to various charities. The app pictures were taken at a Motor Neurone Charity opening. In May and June the garden is full of bloom with Iris, Alliums, vivid blue Ceanothus shrubs and other late spring plants. Kathy is keen on Chinese themed plants and Wisteria varieties grow on pergolas and walls, making spectacular displays. There are also

Clematis in different colours, the white Montana ‘Spooneri’ covering a huge area on a north house wall. Another deep pink variety with masses of bloom covers a nearby garden wall. The Chinese theme is continued with huge tree peony flowers which have a lovely delicate perfume. In July there are Lilies, a Wild Flower Meadow and an Edible Flower Border. Kathy runs demonstrations on how to use these in cookery. The ‘Prairie plantings’ begin to flower and continue into September. Many special extra opening days and themed events take place also – details at info@kathybrownsgarden.com – 01234 822064. Kathy writes books on gardening and has been an authority on Container planting for many years. In your own garden weeding and dead heading will need to be done. Prune shrubs which have bloomed after January, especially Brooms, as if left to grow freely they become leggy. Cut down to the base of each flowered branch, leaving about two inches of this for new growth to sprout from.

Enjoy July and Happy Gardening! From Diane Clay at Picturebook Gardens geoff.diane@yahoo.co.uk

Hopi Ear Candling - What’s it all about?

H

opi Ear Candles or Thermal Auricular Therapy as it can also be known is a gentle, relaxing treatment for the ears. The Candles are made from 100% Organic cotton or linen. Impregnated with honey and herbs and essential oils to help soothe the sinuses and mind! Hopi candles can be used for many conditions including deafness caused by excess wax, congested sinuses, irritation in the ears, noises in the ears, tinnitus, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraines. Great before flying or if you are a keen scuba diver! It is also surprising relaxing, with many people finding it hard to stay awake. So great if you do not fancy de-robing but still want to quite your mind and feel rejuvenated!

What Happens in a treatment? Laying on your side the lit candle is placed over the entrance to the ear canal. The heat from the flame enters the ear and moistens the wax in your ears and loosens congestion, gently drawing it up the candle. Once the ear is treated a massage is performed around the ear to help drainage. Once both ears have been treated, a pressure point massage is carried out on the face, to help soothe the sinuses and aid further relaxation.

You will then be left to relax and let the massage take effect.

What is drawn up the candle? After the treatment is carried out, your therapist will show you (optional!) what has been drawn up the candle! If you have clear ears, there may not be any visible wax, if you have ear problems you may find small lumps of orange/brown wax! The result – a clearer head, more clarity with your hearing and relaxed! Why not go and give it try! 07908 625968 www.therevivecompany.com Kerry@therevivecompany.com

CANCER: June 22 - July 22 A successful visit to somewhere new shows as making life far more interesting for Cancerians, who seem to learn something from history or historic facts, which helps their future, so this month helps those born under this sign to finally believe in a possibility in the future which has always eluded them in the past, mainly because they look at information in a new light.

LEO: July 23 - August 23 Commitment to family issues takes up a lot of extra time and patience, for Leo subjects this July, so it is a busy month, but not much seems to actually get done. The way that the cards suggest handling this is to not be obsessed with trying to solve problems, but to take a look at the situation from a different standpoint, to see if there are other ways around the issue, rather than trying to storm full blast at it.

VIRGO: August 24 - September 22 July shows as a time to rest on laurels of success for Virgoans, and stick to existing paths, which are tried and tested rather than taking chances with emotions, money or work. This is the month for self-congratulation and polishing up past medals of victory; to remind the Virgo mind what they have already accomplished, and will accomplish again in later months.

LIBRA: September 23 - October 23 A loving and cosy month with relationships is shown for those with the Libran scales as their emblem. It’s a month to venture forward to new places that they think that they will enjoy, and for opening doors up to new people, in work, and love. There is also a need to rest in places or with people close to their hearts.

SCORPIO: October 24 - November 22 July is all about partnerships and loving relationships, but also about doors opening and closing on love. This means finally letting go of impossibly demanding lovers, and allowing new possibilities to come to the fore, by letting the light shine on those who would suit them as partners who they can trust and rely on. It is time to cut out the real deadwood, and like most growing things, correctly cutting things back can actually help things grow. 36 NOW LIVE – VISIT OUR BRAND NEW COMMUNITY LIFE WEBSITE! www.communitylifemag.co.uk

SAGITTARIUS: November 23 - December 21 July is seen as a month of learning for Sagittarians, who don’t usually like being told things, and like to feel a sense of timelessness and control around them to feel safe, however, this month shows some strong possibilities for good longer term changes if they can just force themselves slightly out of their comfort zone.

CAPRICORN: December 22 - January 20 Health and fitness show as things to mark as important for Capricorns this July, after a few months of inactivity, it’s time to push the limits forward to test whether they can still do what they always tell everyone that they can do. The results should shame them into more activity, so that they can recapture themselves at their best.

AQUARIUS: January 21 - February 18 Expect this month to be all about communication, and difficulties showing between what is said and heard by others and what is actually meant. This is especially important in family and relationship connections. This is a month that Aquarians should definitely not jump to the usual conclusions.

PISCES: February 19 - March 20 As Pisces people can sometimes act out only of certainty, rather than a sense of doubt and fear, they can hold themselves back when they should be acting or reacting to situations, so relaxation and comfort after a difficult time in the recent past are recommended for those born under this sign, to help them make the right decisions after suitable reflection.

ARIES: March 21 - April 20 Demands from work or work needing to be done is the flavour of the month for those born under the Aries star sign. However, rather than feeling the pressure, the cards show the pressurized situation working for, rather than against the situation, when everything seems in place for a more relaxing time later because of what is done this July.

TAURUS: April 21 - May 21 Money shows as needing sorting out this month for Taureans, who while they usually love life and comfort can sometimes find themselves left behind with the details and nitty gritty of actually earning or saving the money for necessities, and the paperwork connected with it. Taureans should check for forgotten bills and demands before relaxing this month.

GEMINI: May 22 - June 21 Thoughts of changing home or staying away from home show strongly for Gemini subjects, although there shows no holiday or temporary feel to these changes. Because of this the cards suggest very careful thought before going into these changes, as they are shown as long term, and as such very important to get right. Common ear, nose and throat problems in children

T

he adenoid is a small gland in the back of a child’s nose. It helps to fight infections in the early years of life but becomes redundant at about three years of age. The adenoid then gets smaller over time. In some children the adenoid is so large that it blocks the nose and the child appears to breathe only through their mouth. This can cause snoring and problems breathing at night. It can also block the tubes that connect the ears to the nose and contribute to the formation of “glue ear”. This causes hearing loss and can make your child prone to ear infections. Removing the adenoid can help treat these symptoms but there is a small risk of bleeding which must be considered.

Adenoid Tonsils Glue Ear Tonsils The tonsils are small glands in the back of the mouth which also fight infections in early childhood. Again they become redundant at approximately three years of age and then gradually shrink. Like the adenoid they can become enlarged and contribute to snoring and problems breathing at night. Most sore throats are viral and are fairly mild, only lasting a few days at a time. They are often accompanied by a cough and a runny nose and usually require no treatment other than paracetamol and ibuprofen. Bacterial “tonsillitis” on the other hand is much more severe and lasts a week or longer. Your child will usually refuse to eat and drink and they will also have a high temperature, swollen glands in their neck and the tonsils will often be coated in white spots. A runny nose and cough are not usually present. If this occurs frequently and your child is missing lots of school then removing them can help although there is a small chance of bleeding (1 to 2%) which must be considered.

Tonsils When mucus accumulates behind the eardrum it is called “glue ear”. It is very common in childhood and can cause problems with hearing, speech delay, behavioral problems and recurrent ear infections. Most children will have glue ear at some point in time and it only requires treatment if it does not resolve by itself. I adopt a watch and wait policy before offering treatment, which is either grommets (small ventilation tubes which fall out after one year) or a hearing aid which is used for as long as the glue ear is present. Removing the adenoid can also reduce the likelihood of the glue ear returning. Snoring in childhood is common and is usually caused by enlarged tonsils and/or adenoid. The snoring noise is caused by blockage of the upper airways during sleep and ranges from “simple snoring” where there is no significant drop in the child’s blood oxygen levels through to something called “obstructive sleep apnoea” where the child appears to stop breathing in their sleep for what appears to be a very long time. ENT surgeons use the umbrella term “sleep disordered breathing” to describe all types. Simple snorer’s suffer no consequences and need no treatment and the child usually grows out of it.

Monthly Recipe Courtesy of The Pavilion at The Park, in Bedford Park

Eton Mess Eton Mess (Pavilion Style) This month brings you the quintessential taste of an English Summer on a plate! It's easy & delicious & won't take very long at all to prepare. Good old Eton mess - a winner every time; a delicious dessert consisting of strawberries, meringue, and cream. It's traditionally served at Eton College's annual cricket game and apparently a hungry Labrador launched itself on the hamper of some picnic-ing Etonians thereby crushing the contents, hence the dish was created! You can make your own meringues but for speed and ease we're opting for the shop bought ones here. If you want to use shop-bought coulis for the same reasons, that's fine too!

Serves 4 Ingredients: • 800g/1lb 12oz ripe strawberries, hulled • 1 tbsp icing sugar • 200ml/7fl oz double cream • 200ml/7fl oz crème fraîche or Greek-style yoghurt • 8 ready-made meringue shells • 2 passion fruit, pulp only (optional) • fresh mint, raspberries & the pulp of a passionfruit to garnish

For the berry coulis • 100g/3½oz frozen mixed berries, defrosted • juice of 1 lime • 1 tbsp icing sugar

Method: 1. Cut the strawberries into bite-sized pieces and add a tablespoon of icing sugar to taste. 2. Whip the cream lightly and fold in the crème fraîche or yoghurt. 3. Reserve a meringue per person & crush the remainder into bitesized pieces, combine with the cream. 4. Gently fold in the strawberries, keeping a few to one side for garnish. For extra flavour add the pulp of two passion fruit. 5. To make the coulis, place the mixed berries, lime juice and icing sugar into a small food processor and blend until smooth. 6. Pass the berry mixture through a fine sieve. 7. To serve, place a meringue on a plate and top with the 'mess'. Decorate with the reserved strawberries, passionfruit pulp (if using) raspberries, mint & coulis. Dredge with a light dusting of icing sugar. Let us know how you get on - we would all love to see pictures of your efforts! Send your photos to hello@communitylifemag.co.uk or post them on any of the Twitter and Facebook pages!
