‘YOU Programme’ Empower yourself for 2018

mpact Mental Health Peer Support are delighted to announce The YOU Programme, a project to deliver empowering programmes for four weeks at one day a week, funded by Bedford Borough Council.

The programme provides ways in which individuals can learn how to feel more empowered and get in control of their wellbeing recovery using a variety of tools and for employers, this can mean a significant reduction in long-term absenteeism due to stress and mental ill health, saving companies thousands of pounds in sick pay.

The successful and empowering mental health peer support, four week YOU Programme is being hosted at the Community Volunteer Service on Bromham Road, for 4 weeks from Tuesday, 9th January 2018. The free one-day a week programme over the four weeks teaches people how to manage and reduce negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours, using a wide range of selfmanagement models, tried and tested theories and wellbeing recovery tools. The programme is about your empowerment, your recovery, your options and how to make them work for you and can help you identify well-being challenges, find techniques to overcome pressures and barriers and create plans to improve your health & wellbeing with a clear focus on your plans for the future.

Learning how to manage stress successfully and implement mental health recovery techniques can increase employee work performance, productivity and improve employee engagement within the company through promoting a culture of wellbeing.

Skilled Peer Consultants help you to focus on what recovery and well-being solutions work best for you through exploring fundamental subjects that help to enhance your journey towards total well-being. Impact Mental Health Peer Support can provide Workplace Based Mental Health Wellbeing Support and Training Services for employers and work-based mental health peer support sessions for employees, in addition to providing Organisation Health & Well-being Events. We also deliver a variety of Community-Based Mental Health Peer Support Programmes, which can help local communities to establish their own on-going peer support groups for the future and develop their social networking opportunities. BLUE BELT PROGRESS

I

am sure that many of you, like me, have enjoyed cold winter Sunday evenings watching the amazing ‘Blue Planet’ on the BBC with the national treasure, David Attenborough. Quite the most extraordinary filming by incredibly talented people, showing us the wonders of the marine and coastal world. Here in Bedfordshire we are about as far from the coast as you can get in the UK, but I know just how many of you are keen on preservation of our eco systems and wildlife, and take a huge amount of notice as to how we conserve the very wonders we enjoy learning about. I am delighted that 23 new Marine Conservation Zones have been announced, in addition to the 27 designated in the last Parliament and over 500 other marine protected areas that already existed in the UK. Together these help fulfil the ambitious pledge to create a ‘Blue Belt’ of protection for our diverse marine wildlife, which now covers over 20 per cent of English waters. It’s quite a challenge, but one that has been high on the political agenda. This brings the number of English Marine Conservation Zones to 50, covering an area roughly equivalent to the whole of Wales, or 13 times the size of Greater London. They will protect 45 different types of habitat, geological features and fascinating sea creatures, including stalked jellyfish and spiny lobsters. The new Zones represent the second of three phases of Marine Conservation Zones. 8

They build on work to protect the marine environment, which includes new consultations on Special Areas of Conservation for harbour porpoise and Special Protection Areas to protect feeding and bathing areas used by iconic seabirds, such as spoonbills in Poole Harbour and puffins on the Northumberland coast. We are also taking action on single use plastics, and looking hard at deposit schemes to try and conquer the ‘disposable’ aspect of plastic. The legislation to ban microbeads is also now in place. So a lot going on – but as we know from programmes like ‘Blue Planet’ its going to take all of us to rid our oceans and seas of the things so easily disposed of day to day. I hope we are all going to work even harder to reuse and recycle; I’ve started using a reusable cup for coffee on the move, and a reusable water bottle – what can you do today that will make a difference to our planet?

Online Complaints

using Resolver

C

omplaining isn’t always easy – companies can ignore you or try to scare you off with legalese. The free online tool Resolver takes the hassle out of making a complaint by helping you draft a letter, send it, monitor replies and then escalate it to an ombudsman or complaints body if it’s not sorted. Here’s how it works. Which companies can I use Resolver to complain to? You can raise pretty much any kind of complaint with over 29,000 firms and public bodies, including shops, restaurants, energy and telecoms firms, banks and insurance providers. If a company’s not listed, you can ask Resolver to add it via a form on its website. How can it have template letters for every single eventuality? The vast majority of complaints are actually about very similar subjects, though the actual issue can differ by sector. So, if you’ve got a problem, first select the company you want to complain about, then you will see a list of initial options. For example, with a complaint about an energy firm, your will have many choices from a list Then there will be a sub selection on that so most are covered. If your complaint is initially rejected, it will help you escalate it – within

Money Matters

By Martin Lewis the company first, and then, if necessary, to an ombudsman or regulator. Several ombudsmen, regulators and other complaints bodies accept submissions directly via Resolver. Can I complain to the company in question over the phone? Yes, phoning the firm in question may be best if you think you’ve got a straightforward complaint, but remember you may be charged for the call. If you call via Resolver’s free iPhone* or Android* app, your call will be recorded; if you don’t have a compatible smartphone, there’s a template you can use in the online tool to note down the details of your call and add them to your case file. Is Resolver effectively a claims management company? No, it’s not – firstly, because it’s free, and secondly, because while it will guide you, you’re in charge of your complaint and responsible for checking it before it’s made. What happens if my complaint isn’t resolved after being escalated to an ombudsman? Unfortunately, if it has been deemed your complaint isn’t fair, you may have little choice other than to accept the situation. If you want to continue to pursue it, often the final recourse is to take it to court, which is a serious undertaking. n array of local sporting heroes gathered at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Tuesday 11 December, to celebrate their success and dedication over the past year at the annual Bedford Sports Awards. The event, which is organised by Bedford Borough Council, recognises the numerous and varied achievements of individuals and groups performing in local sports. More than 250 audience members watched as winners were announced in 13 different categories. The Adult Sports Personality of the Year went to Rebecca Murray and the Junior Sports Personality of the Year went to Frankie Johnson – both for their achievements in Athletics. A special commendation was awarded to Sports Coach of the Year, Philip Odell. Cllr Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio for Leisure and Culture at Bedford Borough Council said: “There is a range of talent and dedication to sport within the borough. As many nominations as possible were invited from local clubs, schools, county governing bodies and members of the public. The Bedford Sports Awards have been running now for 22 years. It’s become a well-established and important date in the local sporting calendar. Huge congratulations goes to all the winners and nominees.” If you would like to be kept up-to-date with all their sports news and included in future consultations you should sign up to the regular Bedford Sport e-bulletin by visiting www.bedford. gov.uk and click on the ‘Stay Connected’ icon at the top of the web page. This gives you all local sports and leisure information in one place. 14

Rural Day Centre

WELCOME

Oakley Rural Day Centre was established in 1998 and we are still going from strength to strength. Our elderly clients look forward every week to a fun packed day in a safe and friendly environment. The creative use of space ensures that small groups can sit together to ensure that clients and carers can interact on a human scale. The Centre is situated in the Old School House, a lovely building in a beautiful setting. The centre is run by three members of staff, backed by thirteen volunteers and a team of volunteer trustees.

WHAT WE DO

The centre is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a start time of 10am. Our clients come from Bedford and surrounding villages. The day starts off with tea, coffee and toast which gives everyone a chance to catch up with their friends about their previous week. We offer a wide variety of mentally and physically stimulating activities, including various craft activities, quizzes, puzzles and games. Alternatively clients can choose to chat or read – it’s their day!

20

We like to theme our activities to the time of year. A recent addition to our activities is a music quiz. Our clients love listening to and singing the old songs and also trying to remember the titles and artists. We recently held a Cheese and non alcoholic wine party, and the clients really enjoyed trying all the different cheeses. We also hold exercise classes on Wednesday morning provided by a qualified trainer. The exercises are chair based and again clients can choose whether to take part. Weather permitting we can go for short walks in the village or just sit in the beautiful peaceful garden which surrounds the old school. We also have entertainers and guest speakers who give their precious time to perform for us. We recently had Kempston Hammers Choir and the Salvation Army play. They provided a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of entertainment.

Angela our cook prepares a delicious two course freshly cooked lunch with seasonable vegetables and locally sourced meat. A traditional roast lunch and apple crumble is always a favourite. Sometimes our clients help to make cakes etc for our Autumn Fair and other events. We hold an environment health food rating of 5 and cater for various dietary needs. Just before Christmas Angela cooks a wonderful traditional Christmas dinner where clients, staff and volunteers sit down together and have a really great time. The centre relies on grants and donations and the good will of our band of volunteers. The cost of the sessions to individuals compares well with other service providers in the Borough. The differential between the cost to the client and to the Charity in providing the service is met through fundraising.

HELP

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help with activities, serving teas and coffee or helping out in the kitchen. If anyone has any time to spare and would like to help please contact Lynne on the number below. Also if anyone wishes to entertain our clients by singing, playing or talking and are willing to spare their time for a bit of tea and cake we would love to hear from you!

PLACES AVAILABLE

We have places available for our elderly clients on all three days, so if anyone is interested to come and have a fun packed enjoyable day with good company please call the number below. We can also give advice on possible transport options The Centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For more information contact Lynne on 01234 824935 or 07733 227374

Tips for a Healthy You

J

anuary and February are months when we are most prone to colds and flu. The following tips can help to give your immune system a much needed boost.

• Eat 5 or more vegetables and fruits a day – the more rainbow colours, the better. • Eat meat and fish to provide iron, vitamin B12 and a good source of protein. • Go easy on processed foods high in bad salt, white sugar, starchy carbs and bad fats. • Reduce alcohol to allow your liver to rejuvenate after the season’s excesses of sugar, fat and alcoholic drinks.

in 2018

• Keep hydrated with water or herbal teas, and avoid dehydrating fizzy drinks, caffeine and squashes. • Get plenty of fresh air and exercise to clear your lungs, boost circulation and improve immune health. No need to join a gym – walking, cycling, swimming or dancing are great activities. • Aim to get 8 hours of sleep a night. Too little weakens the immune system. Avoid looking at blue screens within an hour of bedtime which interferes with quality sleep and turn mobile phones to flight mode if kept beside your bed. • Have a vitamin D test to check if you are deficient. Low vitamin D makes you more prone to colds and flu and is easily corrected with a D3 supplement.

Senior Snippets Winter Proofing Tips

ere are some self-help tips that will help you to protect yourself and your home during the winter months. Here are some common steps that you can take which you will help you to be winter proof:

Check your home is heated safely Have your heating system serviced and your chimney swept, or ask your landlord to do this if it’s their responsibility. Invest in a carbon monoxide detector and locate it according to the instructions. Make sure it conforms to the British Standard EN 50291 and carries a British or European approval mark. Use thermostat valve controls on radiators to turn the heat on and off room by room. A house can take a while to warm up so consider fitting a timer so the house can be set to be warm for when you return home.

Method

1. Put the flour, mixed spice and sweetener in a 250ml mug and stir to combine. Add the grated carrot, egg and milk and stir again to combine. 2. Place the mug in the centre of the microwave turntable and cook on high for 2 minutes or until risen (our microwave was 800W, so adjust the cooking time if yours is different). Leave to stand for 5 minutes – your mug cake may be a little moist in the centre but don’t worry, it will continue to cook while it stands. 3. Turn the cake out on to a plate (or eat it straight from the mug if you want to keep things informal!). Add a dollop of yogurt, dust with cinnamon or nutmeg and decorate with the carrot ribbons. Tuck in straight away, as microwaved sponge tends to dry out faster than oven-baked sponge.

S

pend an evening with 80 of the most talented musicians in the UK.

The Philharmonia Orchestra returns to its second home in Bedford, at the Corn Exchange, with four concerts brimming with world-class artists and roof-raising symphonies. The Philharmonia is a world-class symphony Orchestra that is proud to put great live music at the heart of Bedford’s Cultural life. Whether a live symphony orchestra is completely new for you or it’s your 23rd Season with us, there is music for everyone to enjoy.

We open 2018 with Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi at the helm on Tuesday 30 January. Discover Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, which opens up an infectious Bohemian sound-world filled with dancing rhythms and soaring melodies, alongside Hummel’s gorgeous Trumpet Concerto performed by sensational 18-year old trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary (pictured). On Tuesday 20 March, party music by Mozart rubs shoulders with Haydn’s humorous Symphony No. 47, and at the heart of our season on Saturday 7 April we perform Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony: a must-hear musical autobiography with emotion in every note. We bring our 23rd season to a close with a concert featuring music from two of the most popular operas: Massenet’s Cinderella and Verdi’s La traviata on Wednesday 9 May. Seeing the Philharmonia Orchestra live in concert is a fun and informal experience. Our concerts start at 7.30pm and finish around 9.30pm, so there’s time to join friends and family for a meal before the concert or for a drink during the interval. Tickets start from just £14, and there are discounts for families, schools, students, under-16s and other concessions. To book tickets or for more information, visit philharmonia. co.uk or call 020 7921 3907. We look forward to sharing our world with you. Come and join us. 38

Hedder Gabler comes to Mk Theatre

An interview with Lizzie Watts by Al Senton

L

izzy Watts has succeeded Ruth Wilson in the title role of Hedda Gabler and is now working hard to put her own stamp on a character often described as the female Hamlet in recognition of the particular challenge it sets an actor.

“I am enjoying the pressure. In fact, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the way rehearsals have gone. Not only am I playing this iconic role but it’s in a production that has already been well received.” Part of the pleasure for Lizzy has been working with director Ivo van Hove and his Associates. “One of Ivo’s notes advised me against trying to “explain” Hedda, as she seems to change from one moment to the next. She can be a sharp woman but there is also a vulnerability to her, caused by the sheltering she’s received in her upbringing,” “Hedda is a young woman who has decided against following her inner drive and so she has chosen to

settle down, conform and accept the security that marriage will bring her. In doing so, however, she is living a life she does not want to lead. She’s terrified by the outside world but also wants to be free in the way that only a man is free in this society.” Lizzy sees distinct parallels between the choices which Hedda makes and what is available to Hedda’s modern-day counterparts. “Myself and a group of female friends discussed the pressure we feel about having children while pursuing a career and what that entails. We felt that as women we hadn’t ticked all the boxes,” Lizzy conscientiously filled the hefty gap between being cast as Hedda and the start of rehearsals by immersing herself in a substantial helping of Ibsen’s plays. How did she fare? “I read A Doll’s House, Ghosts, Pillars of the Community and they all tend to feature a woman who is fighting against social conformity. Take Ibsen’s Enemy of the People. That play could have been written now and you wouldn’t have to change a word. He is a writer both for today and for all time.” Lizzy is looking forward to being the leader of the company on the tour and even the prospect of living out of a suitcase for several months holds no fears for Lizzy. “When I was touring with Shakespeare’s Globe, we played dates including China and Russia and I learnt how to pack for venues where the temperature ranged from 30 degrees to minus 30 degrees. Ms Watts is plainly prepared for anything. At MK Theatre from February Tue 27 Feb – Sat 3 Mar http://www.atgtickets.com/shows/heddagabler/milton-keynes-theatre www.heddagableronstage.com

Yogi Yogi is a game perfectly suited for Christmas family after dinner fun. It is a game that will lead to laughs and hilarity, which can be enjoyed by all ages and each game will probably only last about 5 minutes. Yogi consists of a set of cards all with a colourful illustration and an instruction you must follow. You could have a card that tells you to keep your right thumb pointed down, to touch your armpit with you left index finger or to keep the card touching your nose. Once everyone has taken a card the round starts again and you have to pick up a second card and also follow that instruction. This carries on until only one player is managing to do everything the cards say and they become the winner. This leads to hilarious situations and you really cannot help laughing as you watch someone keeping a card on their nose while having both hands touching trying to pick up and read a new card! This is a very simple game that because of its simplicity, and the comic possibilities, can be enjoyed by all ages equally.

Certain Age

Theatre Group

C

ertain Age, a theatre group based in Bedford, was set up by Kathy Frost in 2014 to stage a production of Peter Shaffer’s Lettice and Lovage. The play focuses on two women who are no longer in the first flush of youth, hence the group’s choice of name. In 2016, continuing to focus on plays that offer parts for more mature actors, they performed Rose by Martin Sherman and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Last spring they presented An Evening with Jane Austen, a piece devised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, including scenes from her six best known novels as well as offering some insights into the writer’s life. This was followed in the autumn by Weekend Breaks, a play written by John Godber who has, for many years, been one of Britain’s most performed playwrights along with Alan Ayckbourn and Shakespeare. Following on from this eclectic mix of past productions, the group is working on a new piece for November 2018, to celebrate the centenary of the first votes for women. Whilst that show is in the planning stages,

Certain Age will be producing Life x 3 by Yasmina Reza in March. This play is three variations of the same event seen through the eyes of each guest as the evening runs again… and again... and again! With keen observation and wit, s hepeels away the layers of her characters to show what really makes them all tick. Directed by Paul Frecknall who, as well as directing Rose and Weekend Breaks for the group, has directed for Swan Theatre Company and Sharnbrook Mill Theatre. From the seed of an idea sown four years ago, Certain Age has grown into a group that is not afraid to tackle something different and they are already looking at ideas that can be developed into future productions. Paul and Kathy direct the plays and there is no committee, membership fees or auditions – just a good group of people who enjoy working together.

Review Better Watch Out

Better Watch Out is a horror/comedy that takes its cue from the all-time Christmas classic Home Alone and then twists it into a horror. Luke is a 12 year old boy whose parents are going out for a Christmas party and leaving him with his regular babysitter 17/18 year old Ashley. This time their time together isn’t going to be as pleasant as usual though as their evening is soon disturbed by strange phone calls and a masked figure skulking outside, something that leads to a night that gets ever more horrific.

Can you tell a story without words? Well, Quentin Blake can, and in Clown he does. The book consists entirely of illustrations, in Blake’s well loved and instantly recognisable style. Our hero, Clown, finds himself thrown into the dustbin, along with a number of other toys. He escapes, dusts himself off, and sets out to find someone who can help him to rescue his friends. Along the way he finds himself in a fancy dress competition, entertaining a rather fierce looking dog, and possibly finding himself a home – all without words.

Better Watch Out is a clever, fun little film that uses Home Alone as a template to create a light horror film (it isn’t overly scary in what it shows even though its rated 15) based on a young boy in his house with someone outside trying to get in. It manages to fly along at quite a pace keeping up the tension throughout its 90 minute running time while also having a few comic horror scenes to give you a chuckle, and a break from the aforementioned tension.

The beauty of the story is that while Blake’s illustrations carry the narrative forward, the reader can choose their own way of telling it. No two versions are ever the same, as each child brings to the book their own language and rhythms. Clown himself is wonderfully expressive, and the pictures are enough to have you laughing out loud in several places.

Simon White

An absolutely marvellous book, which every child should read – and which every adult will enjoy too.

Why choose Acorn House ? The highest accreditation a veterinary practice can be awarded is Veterinary Hospital status

What is

“dry eye”

in dogs?

“Dry eye” occurs when the body does not produce enough tears to keep the surface of the eye healthy. Dry eye can affect any dog but it is most often seen in Cavalier and Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs, Pugs, West Highland White Terriers, and Yorkshire Terriers.

Why does dry eye occur?

In most cases dry eye occurs because the dog’s immune system attacks the tearproducing gland in the eye. As the tear gland is damaged, it is able to produce fewer and fewer tears.

What are the symptoms of dry eye?

As tear production is reduced, the eye will feel gritty and sore. Some dogs will rub at their eyes. The shiny, reflective surface of the eye may look dull. The eye will often produce sticky mucus or excessive crusty “sleep” in response to the irritation. Dogs with dry eye are at increased risk of developing eye infections and ulcers.

Acorn House Veterinary Hospital, Linnet Way, Brickhill, Bedford MK41 7HN

Eventually, the damaged surface of the eye may develop abnormal blood vessels or patches of dark pigmentation, and blindness will occur.

How is dry eye diagnosed?

It is important to diagnose dry eye early, so that damage to the tear gland can be halted. Vets use a paper strip test called the “Schirmer Tear Test” to measure tear production. This test only takes sixty seconds and does not require sedation.

What is the treatment for dry eye?

An eye ointment is available which can “switch off” the faulty immune system in the eye, preventing further damage to the tear glands. In some cases, artificial tear drops must also be applied regularly. Very rarely, an operation is suggested, to divert saliva from the mouth into the eye. When dry eye is recognised and treated early, the prognosis is excellent. If you are concerned about your pet’s eyes, please contact Acorn House Veterinary Hospital. The veterinary team at Acorn includes a post-graduate certificate holder in ophthalmology (the study of eyes).

Your Tarotscopes for January 2018... by Susan Peppiatt Capricorn

A Challenging month from Day one, but not a bad one, just one which demands your full attention if you are born under the sign if the Ram. The year ahead shows as one which can be one of your best as long as you don’t weaken, look after your health and let people see the kinder side of you.

Aquarius

Peace and goodwill are only part of the story here, as it emerges that someone who was previously trustworthy has picked up some very stupid habits which can affect you, your happiness and your finances. Keep calm and wait to find out the full truth before acting.

Pisces

Partners and lovers are all important this month for Pisces born children. But misunderstandings are far easier to follow than reality when it comes to sifting truth from fiction. Don’t assume that little lies are meant to be harmful. It looks as if some are just to cover up a secret surprise.

Aries

At a time when everything has to be allowed to settle down before a route forwards can be seen, other possibilities keep arising to stir everything up again. Take things one step at a time and make others walk at your pace to feel more in control , rather than trying to rush into everything to just be seen to be involved

Taurus

This month and year need focus which is extreme before they can be seen as a starting point for a better life . Throw out the scraps of pain from the past and turn them into something that better things can grow from. You need the space that this creates before you can find yourself again.

Gemini

Getting the truth about someone’s feelings is very necessary before any plans are made for a new lifestyle. They may moan about what they already have with you but it doesn’t automatically follow that they are genuinely wanting change , ask before you make up your mind without their agreement

Cancer

2018 Begins a whole new phase for many born under this sensitive sign . Changes in work, homes or relationships are all possible and in the right way. It looks as if your time is finally on its way; just trust and believe which may be harder than you think after previous disappointments.

Leo

Time to get the big between the teeth and push for everything which has recently seemed to have faded away. Nothing has gone totally , but that has taken the place of what was really wanted is a pale shadow of what can be achieved with real intent

Virgo

All aspects of roofing, facias and guttering. Free quotes All work guaranteed

Rest isn’t a word which Virgoans will readily recognise as useful as boredom always steps in when nothing is either happening or being planned. But rest is what’s needed this month, and more often than usual throughout the year, to be at their best.

Libra

01234 404080 07542 719971

Colourful people and crazy situations which start off uncomfortable but quickly become more fun are a feature of this coming year for Librans. It’s not a year of balance, it’s a year of strong decisions for either success money wise or through creative means.

www.roofingbedford.co.uk

Scorpio

Annoyingly good people who will not keep their attentions to themselves become a bit of a challenge throughout the year ahead for those born under the sign of Scorpio. You can feel bad complaining but if you just accept their ministrations it feels that you have no time to yourself

Sagittarius

Family and children are as always the most important and he most demanding part of life. Most Sagittarians wouldn’t gave it any other way, but some time they have to learn to live for themselves . Now is the time to let them learn how.

The box tree caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis) is a defoliating pest of box (Buxus) plants. Although a native to East Asia, adult moths were first recorded in the UK in 2008. By 2011 larvae were reported in private gardens in the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. By the end of 2014 the moth had become established in parts of London and surrounding counties. Where caterpillars are found, severe defoliation of box plants occurs. Adult moths lay pale yellow eggs on the underside of box leaves in late March. When these eggs hatch the greenish yellow caterpillars eat the leaves (Figure 2) and produce a webbing and trail of pellets. After defoliation the caterpillars becomes a pupae in a chrysalis before emerging as a white semi-transparent moth. Box plants can, however, survive being attacked as long as the larvae don’t eat the bark of the main stems consequently fertilisation, mulching and irrigation will help plants recover from damage.

CONTROL

No natural enemies of box tree caterpillars exist within the UK and Ireland. Consequently, natural control measures based on bio-control are limited. In addition, box tree caterpillars contain a range

FREE ESTIMATES Freephone 0800 959 6420 Mobile 07733 254018

of toxins in them that make them unpalatable to birds and mammals. As pupae can survive temperatures as low as -30oC it is highly unlikely that naturally occurring winter temperatures in the UK and Ireland will influence box tree caterpillar populations once established. Insecticides such as spray oil in combination with a synthetic pyrethroid offer the best form of control. They are mainly formulated as water based sprays and applied when leaf miners are present. The insect growth regulator are also highly recommended due to its persistence on box foliage providing long term control. These kills only moths and caterpillars, having no effect against beneficial insects. Application early in the growing season is recommended when adult box tree moths are observed.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

The Big

Garden Birdwatch

T

he Big Garden Birdwatch is world’s largest garden wildlife survey, and 2018 will mark its 39th year. It is run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and will take place on 27th , 28th and 29th January 2018. All we have to do is spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in our garden or a local green space. Then we send our results to the RSPB.

Close to half-a- million people joined in last year counting more than eight million birds and providing valuable information about the wildlife using our gardens in winter. We’re all familiar with the sight of bluetits on a bird feeder or a cheery robin hunting for grubs but it might come as a shock to know that some of our most-loved species are in desperate need of our help because their numbers have dropped dramatically. Species such as starlings and greenfinches have seen their numbers decline by 79 and 59 per cent respectively since the first Birdwatch in 1979. 40 years worth of data allows the RSPB to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are faring, and what potential issues they might be facing. With results from so many gardens, they are able to create a snapshot of the visiting birds at this time of year across the UK. So even if you see nothing at all during your Big Garden Birdwatch hour, that’s important information too!

66

The RSPB also asks participants to log some of the other wildlife they have seen throughout the year. In 2018 people are being asked to look out for badgers, foxes, grey squirrels, red squirrels, muntjac deer, roe deer, frogs and toads.

To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2018, participants should watch the birds in the garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three allocated days. Only the birds that land in the garden or local park should be counted, don’t count those just flying over. There is also a parallel event; Big Schools’ Birdwatch takes place which takes place during the period 2nd January-23rd February 2018. Further information about this can be found at www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch Both the Big Garden Birdwatch and the Big Schools’ Birdwatch are part of the RSPB Giving Nature a Home campaign. This is aimed at tackling the habitat-crisis facing the UK’s wildlife. The charity is asking people to provide a place for wildlife in their gardens or outdoor spaces: this could involve putting up a nest box for birds, creating a pond for frogs, or building a home for hedgehogs. There is a free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, which includes a bird identification chart, plus advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden. Text BIRD to 70030 or visit www.rspb. org.uk/birdwatch. Registration opens on 13th December 2017.

Eden Tree Specialists Ltd have recently attained the status of ARB Approved Contractor (ArbAC). The ARB Approved Contractor Scheme is the only comprehensive accreditation scheme for tree surgery businesses in the United Kingdom, operated by The Arboricultural Association. The scheme is increasingly demanded by Local Authorities and other large commercial organisations and is also of considerable benefit in the domestic sector as a quality mark, assuring the client of good quality tree care undertaken safely and efficiently. The scheme requires the contractor to meet high standards covering four key areas and then exhaustively tests all aspects of a tree-care business’s operation and management: -

• Their understanding and practical application of current arboricultural practice • Their compliance with legislative requirements of arboricultural contracting • Their compliance with health and safety requirements of arboricultural contracting (endorsed by the CHAS scheme) • Their high levels of service to clients through efficient business management. Samuel Dudley, Managing Director of Eden Tree Specialists Ltd said “Achieving this accreditation is of great importance to the business. This recognition gives our clients the assurance of our high standards of work. This means a huge amount to our whole team, as we work so hard to ensure that our working practices are at the very best level possible”.

BEDFORD

W

ith 2018 well underway, Bedford Blues can reflect on a 2017 that got better and better as the year went on.

While the 2016/17 season was a little flat, it certainly had its moments with the final day 40-40 draw at Cornish Pirates being memorable for a barbarian-esq game which saw the departing Myles Dorrian finishing off a sensational final score which Elliot Clements-Hill converted to level the game in Penzance. The off-season was hugely enjoyable for Blues fans as Bedford started to establish a promising looking squad for the coming campaign. The capture of England scrum half Lee Dickson, Welsh winger/fullback Chris Czekaj and England Saxons hooker Tom Lindsay showed clear intent from the Blues. Adding into the mix the return of Alex Rae along with talented Premiership quality in the form of Exeter Chiefs fly half Will Hooley, Northampton Saints winger Howard Packman and former Bath man Rich Lane, and Bedford were getting noticed before the season had even started.

BUILDERS LTD General builders with over 30 years experience For your free quotations please contact us on Te: 01234 602 313 Mob: 07511 349 450 Email: chrismgardener@hotmail.com

Bedford’s squad also benefitted from former Leinster and Jersey prop Sean McCarthy, back rower Jarad Williams who had Championship experience with Yorkshire Carnegie and Doncaster, plus uncompromising prop Alex Penny who had been plying his trade at Ealing Trailfinders. Hooker George Edgson made a loan move from Wasps a permanent one while fly half Harry Sheppard swapped London Scottish for the Blues. The Championship season kicked off in blistering fashion as Bedford opened their account with a 36-7 win at Richmond before following it up with a 44-26 victory over London Scottish – both wins came with bonus points. Tough games against Bristol and Ealing followed, but Bedford were soon back to winning ways in the league and cup and finished the year in the top half of the table and looking good to progress in the British & Irish Cup. The Blues have just one home game in January when Nottingham visit on the 20th in the final pool game of the cup. Buy discounted tickets at www.bedfordrugby.co.uk

Free Will & Testament

NEW YEAR NEW OPPORTUNITIES We would like to wish all BedsLife readers a Happy New Year and invite you to consider your resolutions carefully. If you would like to take up a new hobby this year, learn a new skill, increase your confidence, take steps back into work or make new friends ….volunteering could be the answer. Check out our latest opportunities. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – Dog/Puppy Training Could you welcome a gorgeous hearing dog puppy into your home for 14-16 months? With the support of our Puppy Training Instructors you would socialise them and teach them new skills and obedience. Guide Dogs – sighted guide/befriender Help a person who is blind or partially sighted to get their independence back by supporting them to take up new activities. You can make an amazing difference by offering someone the time to simply get out of the house once a week. Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust – John Bunyan Boat Crew The John Bunyan boat is crewed by volunteers. They require cabin crew, deck crew, purser, helms and boatmasters. Keech Hospice Care – Retail Assistant Keech Hospice needs help in their Bedford shop, on the till and upstairs sorting and tagging donated goods, steaming, customer service and displaying stock. We prefer slots of 9-1 and 1-5pm. 78

SOVA – Volunteer Mentor SOVA runs multiple projects working with some of the most disadvantaged people in society. They are looking for motivated and open-minded people to become volunteer mentors working directly with those facing adversity because of crime, drugs, unemployment, isolation or lack of skills. Community Led Initiatives – Volunteer Mentor The CLI approach provides one-to-one mentoring and group services to people who want to move away from socially-excluding behaviour, including substance misuse and offending. The aim is to reintegrate people back into society and we are currently looking for individuals with a genuine and committed approach, and the confidence to build relationships based on the belief in people’s ability to change. East Anglian Air Ambulance – Volunteer Speaker The service is often asked to attend community events to present information to groups of people who are interested in the East Anglian Air Ambulance. They are looking for a speaker to deliver 30 minute talks to a variety of audiences about how to get involved and support them. Respite at Home Volunteers – Treasurer Respite at Home Volunteers require a treasurer to maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained. 43 Bromham Road, Bedford Call 01234 354 366 or email volunteering@cvsbeds.org.uk www.cvsbeds.org.uk
