ne of the most famous pubs in Bedford is going to become a haven of support for people with learning disabilities. Planners have given the thumbs up to a scheme that will give new life to The Anglers Rest on the old Clapham Road. Over 300 adults, teenagers and their families will now be given opportunities in life that were previously unavailable to them. Parents and carers have described it as ‘inspirational’. Catherine Smith, a parent of two disabled sons said “as a parent you always worry about the future for your children. It gives us peace of mind to know there will be modern facilities that will support our sons, where they can learn life skills, have social opportunities and engage in regular exercise which would otherwise not available to them under the guidance of dedicated staff.”

Beds Garden Carers (BGC), the charity that provides education, work experience and social opportunities to people with a learning disability, autism and challenging behaviour, will create a new opportunities centre linked to the pub. The site was purchased in 2012 by BGC who opened a café in the pub. After the centre is built, the pub will be refurbished to update the café and include an emergency respite centre on the first floor. BGC currently provide opportunities through a range of workshops, including independent living skills, arts, crafts, and computing skills and provide much needed work experience through their, café, furniture store and gardening program. They organise social activities and four holidays each year, offering valuable respite for families. When the new centre is completed, service provision for people with a learning disability within Bedfordshire will be dramatically improved. Sharon Hart, Chief Executive of BGC said: “We 4

are delighted that planning permission has been granted as it brings us a step closer to the Centre becoming a reality. Creating an environment that is easily accessible for people with a physical disability, perfect for learning and an uplifting place to be is incredibly important and our modern design will allow us to do just that.” BGC need to raise £3 million to complete the building. The Bedfordshire Opportunities for Learning Disabilities (BOLD) Appeal represents the most exciting opportunity to make the next leap forward in services that will transform lives for people with a learning disability, autism and challenging behaviour in Bedfordshire. For further information and to get involved in fundraising please visit contact Paul Sutherland on: paulsutherland@bedsgardencarers.org.uk or 01234 352899 Follow BGC on Facebook www.bedsgardencarers.org.uk 1 Brereton Road, Bedford, MK40 1HU

Views from

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... SOCIAL CARE – AN AGE OLD ISSUE There is no simple answer, for there are many aspects to the difficulties, and nor is it solely a question of resource. People live differently to a generation ago. More people live on their own, more people live further away from relatives, and we have fewer multi-generational households than in the past.

A

s President of Carers in Bedfordshire, and a former Minister for Community and Social Care, I have had long engagement with the phenomenon of our times – older age. One of the startling facts of life in the United Kingdom post war has been increased longevity. Almost without exception, anyone reading this article has a longer expectation of life than when they were born. For many, these extra years will be fruitful and enjoyable. But for some they will be difficult, and for almost all there will be a greater need of medical care of some sort. Projections made suggest that between 2012-2032 the number of those aged 65-84 will increase by 39%, but over 85 year olds will rise by a staggering 109%. There will be a 60% increase amongst those of our population needing social care in the next twenty years. How we cope with this as a society has rumbled away as a political issue for many years, but the events of this winter have moved it up the agenda, highlighting both the urgency of current circumstances, and the need for longer term options. 8

On the other hand we have developed volunteering and informal social care to a dramatic degree – with 6.5m carers today, and perhaps 9m by 2037. We have new technology available to provide increasingly inventive ways in which to look after each other, saving costs and allowing resources to be spread further. We have an immediate issue, in terms of the current crisis in social care, and a medium to longer term issue of how to increase the resources needing to be spent to cope with the anticipated increase in numbers. In the first instance I support the provision of some extra immediate finance, partly through the local tax route, and the continuing efforts being made to integrate council and NHS care, and examine why some places handle this far better than other areas. This is not passing the political buck; is does happen to be true that areas vary more than they should. For the longer term I think we need to end the party divide, and find an agreed, grown up solution, which will mean all of us being prepared to spend more, rather than expect someone else to pay for us. How that is to be done, is of course, the trick. I’m happy to listen to your ideas!

Alistair Burt

TRAVEL

Spotlight on

Tokyo

F

rom its early beginnings as a small fishing village known as Edo, Tokyo today is – like many great cities – utterly unrecognisable. Today, Tokyo is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, boasting an endless range of shopping, entertainment, culture and dining choices, as well as centuries of history and plenty of attractive green spaces.

Scenic

Tokyo’s juxtaposing images of modernity and tradition are perhaps best exemplified by two of its most emblematic landmarks: the Tokyo Skytree, completed in 2012, and the 7th century Buddhist temple, Sensoji. The ‘neofuturistic’ television broadcasting tower, Tokyo Skytree, stands at 634m, making it the tallest structure in Japan, and, at the time of its completion, the second tallest in the world. Its real highlights are the two observation decks, located at 350 and 450 m respectively, and offering spectacular 360° views over Tokyo. On the other hand, Sensoji represents the city’s historic, traditional side, and is also one of the most colourful and popular temples in Tokyo. First entered through the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), the temple’s main hall and a five-storied

10

pagoda stand are relatively recent reconstructions, following destruction in the Second World War. For those keen on shopping, Tokyo has it all: from the Tsukiji Fish Market, one of the world’s largest fish markets, famous for its tuna auctions, to the Akihabara district, renowned for its many electronic shops and as the emerging centre for anime and manga. Equally distinctive are the upmarket boutiques and fashion brands found in the high-end Ginza district, and the neon-lit and super-sized advertisements and screens found in the colourful and packed Shibuya, Tokyo’s answer to Times Square. However, you can also discover oases of tranquillity away from the city’s fast-pace. One such example is the Meiji Shrine, opened in 1920 and dedicated to the Emperor Meiji, the first Emperor of modern Japan, and his wife the Empress Shoken. Set in sprawling grounds filled with some 100,000 trees, the Meiji Shrine offers such tranquillity and peace, it is hard to believe that the Harajuku district (a famous hub for Japanese teenage pop culture) is just outside. Similarly, the classical landscapes of the Hamarikyu Garden also offer a picturesque escape, ideal for a gentle stroll. To many, Tokyo symbolises the frenetic energy and hyper-modernity of Japan itself, but scratch beneath the surface and peak between the neon-lit skyscrapers, and you can still find the elements of history and tradition Japan is equally famous for – perfect for exploring! Thinking About Your Future?

Become a Volunteer Police Cadet

B

edfordshire Police currently has 60 Cadets, who follow a national programme helping them to gain life skills and an insight into life as a police officer.

The two-year programme starts in September, and training sessions are held in Bedford and Luton on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and in Biggleswade on a Thursday evening. The Bedfordshire Police Cadet programme aims to promote a practical understanding of police amongst young people and support local policing through volunteering. Being a Cadet is a great way to inspire young people to participate positively in their communities; Cadets also assist with community and crime prevention events including alcohol test purchasing, crime prevention projects, car parking and marshalling and representing the force at official ceremonies. Their dedication was recognised last year after they won a prestigious national award. They scooped the High Sheriffs’ Association of England and Wales National Crimebeat Award 2015/2016 for their outstanding contribution to helping to reduce crime and creating a safer community.

12

Bedfordshire Police Cadets follow a national framework which covers five key areas: presentation, procedures, communication, law and health and safety. Each area is covered with a number of informative, interactive and inclusive sessions. The Cadets also have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers and visit different departments across the force. The programme helps young people develop valuable skills that can be added to their CV or UCAS applications and gives them the opportunity to experience a variety of activities, make new friends and improve their self-esteem and confidence. The Cadets also find time for some fun with a yearly camp sponsored by the Police Federation. Last year, the Cadets also participated in the Lord Mayors Show and went on a behind the scenes tour to the Houses of Parliament. Recruitment is open now. Young people can apply providing they are 15 by the 1st September 2017. For further information email voluni@ bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk or visit the ‘Join Us’ pages at www.bedfordshire.police.uk You can also follow us on Twitter for news and updates regarding the Cadet programme: https://twitter.com/BedsCadets

Money Matters By Martin Lewis

Children’s savings

M

masterclass

any parents, and grandparents, are switching to opening savings accounts for little ones. Here are the best ways to save for your child or their future. It is a good idea to do this with the children and get them involved as early as possible. So if they’re old enough, pick the savings account together, running through the pros and cons of each. Make them responsible for monitoring the rate in case it drops and you need to switch. Look for the best-paying children’s savings accounts and compare depending on whether you need to save monthly or a lump sum.

Are there any accounts grandparents can open?

For younger children, an adult needs to open the account on the child’s behalf and be a trustee or signatory. Your name will then be on the account with the child’s, but your signature will controls it, not theirs. Some accounts are parents only, so check for grandparents.

it’s theirs to do with what they want! So if you’re thinking it’s a ‘Uni fund’, they may prefer to spend it on a car, a holiday, or following bands round the world! If you’ve got a JISA already, check its rate. If it’s poor, you can transfer it to a new provider.

My children have a Child Trust Fund instead?

Children currently aged 5 to 14 got a Child Trust Fund (CTF) instead of a Junior ISA. These are now defunct products, they don’t offer the best rates; since 2015 you’ve been allowed to transfer these into a Junior ISA. Just follow the ‘how to transfer’ info above.

Are children’s savings tax-free?

No. Children pay tax just like adults. Yet unlike most adults they don’t earn from work, if they have any income it’s only from savings. And if anyone, child or adult, only has savings interest and has under £17,000 a year then no tax is taken.

What about Junior ISAs (JISAs) – should I open one of these?

JISAs are savings that let you save £4,080 with tax-free interest for under 18s.The money is locked away until their 18th birthday. After that, 14

ibbs Dementia Foundation is a local charity offering a range of services and activities for people living with dementia in the Bedford area. We support people with dementia and their families throughout their dementia journey, from memory concerns, through diagnosis and as the condition develops and progresses. Dementia CHARITY

We are a grassroots community supported by a team of dedicated and experienced staff and volunteers, working together to build a dementia friendly community and challenge the misperceptions and stereotypes of dementia. We aim to be responsive to local opportunities and to build links with community groups, schools and local business to develop a more inclusive and understanding world for people living with dementia.

We seek to support everyone in our community to fulfil their potential, to be heard, valued and validated and feel empowered and motivated to give something back, using their skills, talents and life experience. We know that life with dementia can be a challenge, but we also know that with the right support and understanding people can live well, have a positive, meaningful and connected life and continue to enjoy and participate fully in community living. Our services are easily accessible for many you can just turn up, there’s generally no waiting list or referral needed.

Our services include:

Music 4 Memory: Creative spaces facilitated by a music therapist where people with dementia and their supporters can meet together in a regular, supported and understanding environment to sing, dance, recite poetry. The aim is to find a sense of community, a means for expression, share joyful moments and have fun. We also have a home visiting service offering one to one music therapy for the most isolated to offer them opportunities for expression and validation. Challengers for Memory: A range of physically challenging activities including walking football, swimming, carpet bowls, yoga and golf. We

believe that with the right support there is no reason why people with dementia can’t continue to enjoy new challenges, take risk, enjoy competition and engage in physical activity. Support for Memory: Six week courses giving those with a recent diagnosis and their family supporter an opportunity to learn about the impact of dementia, support networks available, how to manage symptoms and plan for the future together. The course offers a good opportunity to meet others in similar situations and to build up a network of peer support. Clear Voices: Weekly groups where people with dementia can meet to talk about life with dementia and the challenges it can bring and share ideas as to how to improve and develop services and support networks. Activities and Support groups: A range of cognitively stimulating activity groups for the person with dementia and carers support groups offering family supporters opportunities to learn and share on an emotional and practical level. How can you get involved: • We are always looking for volunteers, it’s a fulfilling and rewarding opportunity, you will be fully supported and receive full training. • Many of our services are funded through small grants so extra funding or sponsorship would enable us to achieve so much more. • If you are affected by dementia contact us or come along and find out for yourself, you can be assured of a warm and friendly welcome. Consica Jazz at the Quarry Theatre

C

onscia Jazz, the Bedford based jazz promotion and education company are delighted to be bringing the duo of Mark Pringle & Tom Syson to the Quarry Theatre bar on the 15th of February.

Award-winning pianist Mark Pringle and unique young trumpeter Tom Syson explore the art of the duo. Embracing influences from the golden early years of jazz and the contemporary avantgarde, the pair weave rich melodic tapestries, evoking times past and present, all projected through the prism of their own experiences to create music tinged with nostalgia, yet driven by radicalism. Beginning in 2014 as an investigation of Chet Baker’s music, the duo use composed material as a starting point for developing music through improvisation. Quickly moving away from this early influence, they nevertheless retain a focus on purity of expression and song-like melody. Each performance is not only slightly different, but significantly so. The event starts at 8.00pm and tickets cost £10 for adults and £8 for concessions, available in advance at www.conscia.org or on the door. The event will be an informal event in the Quarry Theatre bar and will have a short interval between two 45 minute sets.

I can’t eat that! Food allergies and intolerances

W

ondering whether that dicky tummy or rash could be down to something you’ve eaten? Read on…

What’s the difference between food allergy and food intolerance? A food allergy affects the immune system. Symptoms usually appear within a few minutes of eating the offending food, and can include a skin rash, upset stomach (eg vomiting), stomach pains and wheezing. The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis, which can affect breathing and send the body into shock. Without treatment, anaphylaxis can be life-threatening, which is why it’s so important for people with a known allergy to carry an EpiPen if they’ve been prescribed one, and to teach colleagues, friends and family members how to use it. Food intolerances are more common than food allergies. Symptoms include irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, stomach upsets, eczema, migraines and even arthritis. The immune system isn’t affected and symptoms might not appear for a couple of hours, which can make it harder to work out what type of food is causing the problem.

While you can be allergic or intolerant to any type of food, there are eight common culprits: Peanuts Tree nuts Eggs Milk Fish Shellfish Wheat Soy If you have an allergy or intolerance to one type of food, you may well be allergic to other types in the same food group.

Diagnosis

You’ll need to see your GP if you suspect you have an allergy or intolerance, so that they can rule out any other causes for your symptoms. They’ll then likely refer you to a specialist for tests. Food allergies can often be diagnosed with blood or skin reaction tests. Intolerances are more difficult to diagnose. You may be asked to follow an ‘elimination and challenge’ diet, if necessary, to try to determine what foods you’re intolerant to. You’ll be asked to cut out certain types of food for a period of time, then reintroduce them gradually.

Treatment

If you’re allergic or intolerant to a type of food, you’ll need to avoid it completely. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Ingredients such as milk powder and egg white are often used in products you wouldn’t expect to find them in. And restaurants aren’t always as vigilant as they should be about cross-contamination. So you might be prescribed steroids, antihistamines, or an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen) if you have an allergy. You may also be referred to a dietician, to make sure you’re still getting all the nutrition your body needs. The website www.allergyuk.org has a wealth of information about allergies and intolerances. If you don’t have access to the internet, try the helpline on 01322 619898.

5 ways

to make your fragrance last longer A lighter scent Spray the fragrance in the air and slowly walk into the mist. The spray will distribute evenly across your body and leave you with a hint of fragrance for occasions when you don’t want to smell as strong.

CND Shellac™ is the original and only power polish service, empowering you – the real woman – with 14 days of superior, chip-free colour no matter what life brings you.

Layers last longer If you treat yourself to the shower gel and body cream set to match your fragrance, you will find your perfume will last longer as you use less of it. Lock fragrance in Spray your perfume after taking a shower and before getting dressed. The moisture on your skin helps lock in the scent and prevents the fragrance from staining delicate clothes or jewellery. Spray pulse points Wrists and neck are the obvious choices, but don’t forget the inside of the elbows, backs of the knees and the ankles. Don’t rub your wrists together after spraying, you’ll force the top notes to disappear faster than intended and your fragrance won’t last as long. Keep the fragrance Don’t store them in your bathroom or other damp, warm places. Heat, light, and humidity will break down the perfume and lessen the quality of the fragrance. Store them in cool, dry spots and away from windows.

• The original “power polish,” CND Shellac combines the ease of polish with incomparable high-gloss shine and extended 14-day wear. • Improve your nails with an armour coat that says ‘see you in two weeks’. • ZERO dry time – means there’s no need to wait to grab your keys at the end of your service. • No nail damage, because there are no drills or nail surface filing required. • Easy on and easy off in just 5 minutes with safe, gentle CND Shellac Remover Wraps.

The Cost

of Divorce?

“How much will it cost?” and “How long will it take?”, these are the questions most frequently heard by lawyers involved in divorce proceedings and, frustratingly for lawyers and clients alike, the answer is invariably uncertain. Recent changes in the law however have meant that, certainly in respect of cost, it should be easier to predict. If a client and lawyer together embrace the nonadversarial nature of family proceedings and strive to negotiate a reasonable and fair agreement, a spouse can be reasonably confident that the costs will be restricted to their own legal costs and that their share of the matrimonial “pot” will not be depleted by unnecessary or unreasonable legal fees incurred by the other party to the divorce. Divorce is an extremely stressful experience and even in cases where the separation itself is amicable, emotions often run high when it then comes to sorting out the matrimonial finances. It is understandably easy to lose sight of the fact that every penny spent in legal fees is a penny less in the matrimonial “pot” and frequently it costs more to argue the point than the asset in issue is worth. 30

Indeed it is not unusual for relations between the parties to have deteriorated to such a point that clients, whilst appreciating this point, say they would rather the lawyers had it than their ex husband or wife “get their hands on it”! Lawyers who specialise in divorce are bound by a code of conduct placing a responsibility on them to minimise the costs and help the parties resolve matters by agreement if possible but it can still be an expensive and long drawn out process. Choosing the right lawyer is extremely important. You need to feel completely comfortable with your lawyer, know that they are experienced and have faith they will get you the best possible outcome. This is why I always offer a no obligation free initial consultation. I also offer a personal and totally flexible service, providing as much or as little help as you wish. My services can be tailored to your budget and circumstances so that you can retain control over the costs and I have many clients who deal with a lot of the work themselves and just consult me on an ad hoc basis when they need my expertise. Contact Lisa Smith to book your free initial consultation by face to face meeting at the office or by telephone on 01525 632330 or E:info@ directaccessfamilylaw.com

TRAVEL

5 Top Travel Safety Tips

Keep your cards safe

Travel necessities

With a significant rise in card fraud abroad through card cloning, make sure you are ultra cautious when using credit cards abroad.

Hide cash when travelling

Make sure you don’t carry huge wads of cash with you to the beach or on an evening out. Only take out what you think you’ll need and leave the rest in your hotel safe.

Make photocopies before leaving home Take a photocopy of all your important documents: credit and debit cards (front and back as this will have your provider’s lost card number on it), passport, driver’s licence (if you’re taking it) and travel insurance policy.

Wherever you’re travelling to, you’ll need some first-aid essentials. Many chemists close one day a week and early on Saturdays, even in Europe, so make sure to stock up before you go to get you through.

Prep up on the country’s culture before leaving home

Learn something about the culture of the country you’ll be visiting and what gestures such as eye contact, a handshake or smiling may mean – what’s inoffensive to you could be the height of rudeness in a different culture, so make sure you’re aware of any local customs.

Feast

of St Valentine

alentine’s Day, the ‘most romantic day of the year’, otherwise known as the ‘feast of St Valentine’s’ is commonly linked to romantic love since the middle ages.

A frequent anecdote is of Saint Valentine performing for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted in the Roman Empire; a romantic hero and one celebrated all over the world. Valentine was not just the patron Saint of romance; he is linked to several things of a romantic nature, specifically – affianced couples, engaged couples, happy marriages, love, lovers and greetings.

As a result, leading up to the 14th February each year, the retail industry starts pedalling everything you can think of in the shape of a heart, prices increase at restaurants, comfortable eateries suddenly become cramped cattle markets filled with tables of two enjoying a ‘Valentine’s Day Special’ menu which gives you a glass of Prosecco each and adds £20 to a normally £15 meal. So romantic…?!

34

There are a lot of critics of this over commercialised ‘holiday’ and these days ‘antiValentine’s’ parties are just as common as Valentine’s events with many couples proudly announcing that they do romantic things all throughout the year for one another and don’t need a holiday to prompt them. But can we quite bring ourselves to be scornful of anything that promotes a positive emotion? There are plenty of negative and upsetting things going on in the world and so if on the 14th of February, a few extra people can feel extra loved up, then why not. Valentine’s Day is huge and despite the large scale opposition to it, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. But perhaps instead of hosting an ‘anti Valentine’s’, party and turning it into anything negative, if you’re not completely sold on a mushy day of soppiness, why not celebrate your own individual way? That’s if you want to acknowledge it at all but if it’s really not your thing, don’t rain on other couples parades, just ignore it! And if you do like the idea of 14th February being held as a marked day in the calendar, send a travelling friend a card, give a jar of honey to someone you like or find another way to give Saint Valentine a little nod.

Inject some colour on your plate

this February

W

hen it comes to food, the winter months don’t have to be boring. There’s such a wide variety of seasonal winter produce, meaning it is possible to inject some colour into your cooking.

From hearty root vegetables to bright, sweet citrus fruit, winter produce offers a surprising range of flavours. Although available all year round, Bramley Apples are at their best from December until March. Considered by many to be the best cooking apple of all, Bramley Apples are delicious in crumbles, apple upside down cake, homemade apple sauce and even stews. For a twist on the classic combination of pork and apple, try layering slices of apple on a shoulder of pork and cook slowly in a low temperature oven for a wonderfully succulent piece of meat infused with the flavour of apples. Swede is often confused with turnip, as they are both root vegetables and members of the cabbage family. In season until late February, Swede has a round shape and a purple-green skin, unlike the creamy-white turnip. With a yellowy-orange flesh that’s sweet and earthy, Swede is delicious when boiled and then mashed with a knob of butter and a dash of salt 36

and pepper. The perfect side to any winter roast dinner! Parsnips are usually only harvested after they have been exposed to the first of the winter frosts, so are at their tastiest at this time of year. They have an earthy but sweet flavour, making them the ideal winter vegetable. Great used in hearty winter casseroles or stews, you can also create tasty dishes where parsnips are the star of the show. Try layering blanched parsnips onto a rolled out sheet of puff pastry (leaving a 1cm border around the edges) and drizzle with maple syrup or honey for a mouthwatering savoury tarte tatin. The first crop of rhubarb, which tastes the best in early February, is grown under pots, hence the name ‘forced rhubarb’. With its characteristic tart flavour, rhubarb is treated as fruit though it is actually a vegetable. Too tart to be eaten raw, make sure you cook the rhubarb with plenty of sugar. It also goes well with apples, so why not whip up a rhubarb and apple crumble, with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, for a tasty dessert?

Fudge FOOD & DRINK

M

ake this as a treat for your Valentine. Pop it in a pretty box with a big bow and they will be yours forever…as long as you don’t eat it all first!

A cooking thermometer is ideal but if you don’t have one use the method below.

Ingredients 100g butter 550g light muscovado sugar /or Demerara for a lighter flavour. 200g golden syrup 350ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract ¼-½ tsp sea salt flakes

38

Method Line a tin about 23 x 23cm / 9inches x 9 inches with greaseproof paper. Melt the butter, sugar, syrup and cream in a medium-sized, high-sided heavy-based pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to a simmer (without stirring) over a medium-low heat and cook, stirring only occasionally until it reaches 116C, stirring more regularly after it reaches 100C and turning down the heat if it begins to catch. Take off the heat and beat in the vanilla and salt with a wooden spoon, then continue beating until the fudge has thickened and lost its shine. Add any ingredients such as raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips at this point. Pour into the tin and leave to set. Once it’s firmed up a little, after about an hour, slice into squares and leave to cool completely. Best kept refrigerated. If you don’t have a cooking thermometer. Have a bowl of iced water and a metal spoon ready next to the cooker. As the mixture begins to simmer beat it more regularly then periodically take ¼ -½ tsp of the fudge mixture and plunge the coated spoon into the bowl of iced water. Then (still under the water) use your fingers to roll the mixture into a little ball. When it forms a soft, pliable ball it’s ready to take off the heat and continue with the recipe.

ew iPad? Worried about how to get to grips with making it work for you? Why not drop in to the Pavilion at the Park in Bedford Park and join their successful “My iPad and me” informal learning group led by local business Invisinet WiFi in 2017. The lively drop-in group runs every Wednesday at the Pavilion at the Park and the tutors from Invisinet WiFi offer their advice and support to people who want to gain confidence using their iPad or iPhone. “We have a great time practicing new things such as Facetime, downloading new apps and sending photos. Plus it’s nice to learn with others and have a coffee and a slice of cake whilst doing so. We share common frustrations and Rob helps us to understand where we might be going wrong” said Penny Cooper who has been attending for 11 months now. “There always seems to be something else to learn and Rob is extremely patient with us and gives us the skills to use the iPad without doing it for us.”

The classes run throughout the year and will offer local people the chance to learn more about how to use their iPad efficiently and effectively, while enjoying delicious cakes and ethically sourced coffee or tea. in the stunning surroundings of The Pavilion Cafe in the heart of Bedford Park. The weekly class requires no booking and it’s on a ‘come and try’ basis. Anyone interested in learning more about how to make the most of their tablet is encouraged to come along armed with questions and ready to meet new people in a relaxed and interactive environment. Director of The Pavilion, Emma Garrett said “Unlike many formal courses and ICT learning schemes the ‘coffee morning’ concept allows people to learn at their own pace through peer led support in a totally relaxed setting” Come along with your iPad, your questions, an open mind – a love of cake is desirable but not compulsory! FREE counselling for children and young people resumes

F

REE counselling for children and young people is now available again through the local Relate team. Relate Bedfordshire and Luton suspended free counselling for 5-21 year-olds in the summer when funding was forecast to run out due to high levels of demand. Now the Centre forecasts it has enough money to reintroduce the FREE service – with immediate effect. “The need for our children and young people counselling service has not changed over this period,” says CEO Angela Foll, “but by introducing a payment for the services it has allowed our funding to go further. “We understand that some families just cannot afford to support their children with paid-for counselling on top of everything else. Now that we can return to free counselling for children and young people we are pleased that any financial barrier for parents and young people to access the service has been removed.” Relate counsellors are experienced relationship experts who can help children and young people talk honestly and openly and can support them with problems like: 44

• Parental divorce and separation • New step-parents / siblings • Difficulties and conflict in relationships at school, with peers, siblings or parents • Bullying • Pregnancy • Sexual identity • New relationships • Loss and bereavement • School transition • Witnessing domestic violence in the family home. “Children and young people can expect to be helped by a supportive and non-judgmental counsellor, either at your local Relate Centre, at a venue near your home or you might see a Relate counsellor in your school,” says Angela. “What you say is confidential unless the counsellor is worried for your safety.” Many of Relate Bedfordshire and Luton’s young clients tell them they feel happier after they have seen a counsellor and are better able to deal with their problems, whether at school, at home or in their personal life. In the past year 58% of all Relate Bedfordshire and Luton’s counselling work has been with children and young people. Access to the service is easy – there is no need for a professional referral and parents or young people can contact Relate direct. If you are interested in taking up the FREE Relate service call the Bedfordshire and Luton Centre’s friendly appointments team on 01234 356350, email appointments@ relatebedsandluton.org.uk or visit the website for further information: www.relatebedsandluton.org.uk

ollowing critically acclaimed and record-breaking sold-out runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory and Savoy Theatre, Sheridan Smith will reprise her highly praised performance of Fanny Brice at selected venues for the UK tour of Funny Girl including Milton Keynes Theatre which arrives on 28 February – 04 March. Film

Review Rogue One – A Star Wars Story

Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon, since it first came out in 1977 it has become the biggest film series ever. Generations of families have grown up with the films and continue to flock to new films, TV (don’t dare mention the Christmas Special though!), books, etc. Rogue One is the first film though to veer away from the main storyline. There are none of the well-known characters in this adventure and for me this makes it the best Star Wars film since the originals. It starts slower than the others because it has to introduce us to a whole new cast and to integrate itself into the universe (between Episode 3 & 4) but the characters are interesting and the story intriguing. With none of the regulars you get more invested in the action because anything could happen to them, especially with the darker feeling to the overall movie. Once you get to the full on action though the film hits full stride and you sit there just astounded at what is taking place in front of you. Not only is this the best Star Wars film in 30 years it is one of the best war films as well!

Review

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight

We all think we know our children. But do we really know what is going on in their lives? Kate thought she knew about her 15-year-old daughter, Amelia. As a young law student Kate found herself pregnant and raised Amelia, qualified as a lawyer and became successful. She appears to have everything. A comfortable home in a desirable part of Brooklyn, and a place at Grace Hall prep school for Amelia: the perfect life. But it doesn’t take much to bring Kate’s world tumbling down. She receives a phone call from Grace Hall. There has been an incident and Amelia is to be suspended. Kate comes immediately to collect her from school. However, dropping everything is not always an option, and public transport can sometimes let you down. She arrives at Grace Hall too late to find her only child now lying on the concrete, covered by a sheet. What could make a normal, happy 15-year-old jump off a building to her death? Alternating narratives draw us into the lives of Kate and Amelia, reconstructing the events that led to Amelia being on the roof of the school. Did she jump? Or is something darker going on? 57

World Thinking Day

February 22nd

Celebrated since 1926, World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship, speaking out on issues that affect girls and young women, and fundraising for 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world.

It started in 1932 when Lady Olave Baden-Powell wrote a letter to all Girl Guides and Girls Scouts asking them to spare a penny to support Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting to grow. The idea was simple; one coin might not seem like a lot, but 10 million coins can grow the Movement across the globe. The World Thinking Day Fund enables The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) to offer support and opportunities

Top tips on healthy eating

healthy diet can be the key to maintaining a positive outlook on life whilst keeping your mind and body fit and well. No matter your age or eating habits, it’s never too late to change your diet and improve how you feel.

Healthy eating includes consuming high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals while minimising processed foods, saturated fats and alcohol. Healthy fats Choose healthy unsaturated fats which can improve blood cholesterol levels, lower your risk of heart disease, and benefit insulin levels and blood sugar. Omega-3 fats can benefit your brain and mood; typically found in fish, nuts and seeds.

Exercise Healthy exercise is anything that gets you moving; average of 150 minutes a week is recommended. Walking rather than driving is a small change which introduces exercise into your daily routine. Less sugar Slowly reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, there are hidden sugars in foods such as ready meals, tinned goods and pasta sauces. Fibre As we age, digestion becomes less efficient, so it’s important to include more fibre in your diet. Start your day with high fibre cereal. The best source of fibre are whole grains, wheat cereals, barley, oatmeal, beans, nuts, vegetables and fruit.. Home Instead Senior Care, 106A Bedford road, Wootton, Bedford, MK43 9JB. Potion Explosion

Are you one of the millions who love Candy Crush and its many variants? If so then Potion Explosion is a board game version that includes multiple players and adds in creating magic potions to enhance your ability to create more ‘explosions’. The ‘board’ in this game is a small contraption that holds a collection of four different coloured marbles that slide down when others are removed. Up to four players take turn trying to create collisions of marbles the same colour by removing one single marble. You get to keep the one marble you take and any others of a single colour that collide after removing that one. These marbles are used to fill potion cards that all do different things when ‘drunk’, ie take one marble of each different colour that is on the bottom row. The more potion cards you fill the more points you score at the end of the game. Potion Explosion is a simple, fun family game that can be played with young children and adults alike very easily. It also has a good, fun strategic element to it that makes it a great, light way to either start a games night or to finish it off. Simon White 63

PETS

Should my dog

be neutered?

M

any pet owners struggle to decide whether to have their dogs neutered (in females – removing the ovaries and uterus, also known as “spaying”; in males – removing the testicles, also known as “castration”).

Female dogs

The British Veterinary Association recommends that female dogs not intended for breeding are neutered. In addition to preventing unwanted pregnancy, neutering prevents the development of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra) and significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer.

Male dogs

For male dogs, the health benefits of neutering are less convincing, and the procedure is largely done for behavioural reasons. Neutering should prevent excessive sexual behaviour and make male dogs less easily distracted. It does not, of course, influence non-sexual behaviour, so is no substitute for careful training and management of all dogs from an early age.

At what age should my pet be neutered?

There is mounting evidence that early neutering (before puberty) can cause joint and health problems in later life. For this reason, Acorn House Veterinary Surgery recommends that small breed dogs may be neutered from 6 months of age, but dogs expected to reach an adult weight of 15kg or more should ideally wait until they are 12 months of age (later for giant breeds).

Summary

These are general guidelines, and the situation will vary between individual dogs. Other health issues, lifestyle, and temperament will need to be taken into consideration. For male dogs, a hormone implant may be an alternative to surgical castration. Every dog is different. That is why Acorn House Veterinary Surgery encourages all dog owners to discuss the proposed neutering of their pet with one of our team prior to making a decision.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Acorn House team on 01234 261839. 65

PETS

T

he Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets. Founded in 1985 by Averil Jarvis MBE, the trust is a national fostering service for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital. The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets.

Companion animals and the elderly

It is widely acknowledged that pets can positively benefit the well-being of elderly owners. For many elderly people living on their own, their pets are their reason for living. They are constant companions – on hand 24 hours a day, every day, comforting, loving and protecting their owners – not only from outside threats, but also offering the more subtle form of protection from loneliness and despair.

Volunteers

Volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. A national network of community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner. The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. When a pet is in the Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters. If you think you could be a cinnamon trust volunteer then contact them or download a form: http://www.cinnamon. org.uk/volunteers/ A pet can offer much needed companionship, but they do take a lot of care. Maybe you can help someone struggling to look after their pet? If you are interested and available to walk a dog or foster a pet contact The Cinnamon Trust on: 01736 757 900.

Your Tarotscopes for February 2017... by Susan Peppiatt

Aquarius

Growing older seems an annoyance but the cards urge you to live life to the full; don’t see age as a problem. Aquarians make the universe a place of excitement and drama, with little time for accolades and selfcongratulation. There will always be another project, another problem to solve. Let someone else take them on for once.

Pisces

Money coming in and new work are highlighted for Pisceans but the cards urge those born under the two fishes to beware of burning the candle at both ends to try to succeed. It’s pointless burning out all the energies this month, as the call would be to repeat them more often. Pace yourself.

Aries

Previous spending catches up in a big way this month with Aries subjects and the anxieties which come with realisation that trying to make others happy usually is better with giving them time rather than expensive gifts. Make a note though or next year will follow the same path.

Taurus

A small break or talk of a forthcoming trip focuses the mind of Taureans this month. Planning can sometimes get lost in anticipation, which would be a pity as making a good impression is paramount for future in both work and relationship issues

Gemini

Beware impulsive behaviour is the advice for Gemini’s this February. While every thought is not bad or catastrophic, some of the more radical approaches, especially in relationships, are far too likely to backfire. Think on it, sleep on it and think again before acting.

Cancer

More comfort is shown around those born under this sign, both money and happiness are shown as better this February, and about time too. It’s been a long struggle but it looks as if the light is bright at the tunnel’s end, and it’s not too far ahead now.

Leo

Libra

Using old forgotten skills and studies seems relevant this month for Librans, the success of which brings other skills to the fore and different possibilities for future happiness and success. Dig out the old school books, perhaps.

Scorpio

Relationships which change to a more comfortable and settled way are highlighted, making them both more satisfying and more intense. Old arguments and issues need putting away for a while, to allow different solutions to begin to flourish.

Sagittarius

Plans to spend more time on favourite people and places are shown and it looks as if work and life get in the way a little more than anticipated, but there are still some worthwhile moments which make good stories to pass on in later life. Make some memories.

Family and friends are still pretty constantly around both in person and in thought, but Sagittarians are in need of a little rest and personal time. Planning a break in routine or a holiday are advised.

Virgo

Signs of respect and being valued at work or by people in authority are shown this month for those born under the sign of the goat, For once there seems no need to chase after this success as it looks as if it arrives of its own accord.

Parents and those caring for others’ wellbeing are shown as tired and over extended emotionally this February. Enabling those we care for to care for themselves when they can shows as necessary this month and seems to bring some welcome changes for later too.

Winter Injuries

and Recommendations

I

n spring, many landscape plants in the UK exhibit leaf browning, branch dieback and, in some instances death of the entire plant.

This damage appears to have been caused by very cold temperatures over a prolonged period in January. In some locations, sub-zero temperatures occurred when there was little or no snow cover. This resulted in considerable root mortality that has led to foliage browning and bud and twig mortality low temperatures also directly damaged foliage, bud and twig tissue.

Recommendations

Plants should be inspected by a professional arborist in late winter or early spring for symptoms of winter injuries. Plants stressed by winter injuries are more susceptible to pest and disease issues. Do not remove plants that are exhibiting branch dieback and decline immediately. Plants may re-sprout from interior portions of the crown. Pruning back(reducing) dead branches to healthy tissue can be undertaken as plants resume growth. Monitor soil moisture near affected plants and irrigate as needed. Ensure the root zone is properly mulched. Fertilization with a slow release fertilizer will encourage recovery by ensuring sufficient nutrients for new growth. Fertilization is particularly important this year because heavy spring rains caused leaching of nitrogen from the root zone of plants leading to deficiency symptoms. Replenishing soils with fertilizer nutrients will reduce nutrient stress that could compound the effects of winter injury.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Use your garden to say

‘I Love You’

I

t may be cold outside, but romance is in the air with Valentine’s Day around the corner, so warm up for spring by giving your loved one a gift to get them in the mood for gardening. Hearts are very much in focus for Valentine’s whether your loved one has a large garden or just a small space. Even practical tools come heart-shaped, including a thoughtfully designed 26cm long planting trowel by Sneeboer (£35.95 www. harrodhorticultural.com) which combines a fine cherrywood handle with a sharp point making it ideal for bulb planting. You can make your gift more special by including your own personal engraved message on the blade. This Valentine’s Day, send a plant gift that will not only provide instant delight for your lucky Valentine years to come. Let the plants do the talking and show a loved one how special they are by naming a unique pack of rose seeds after them that they can grow into a beautiful rose bush to cherish. The Name a Rose Gift Box (£19.95 www.gettingpersonal.co.uk) lets you choose the name of the rose. 76

If you have a sheltered spot on your patio, or just a space to fill at a window, fill it with a heart-shaped crystal spinner which has a 30% lead crystal hanging in the middle (£19.99, www.home2garden.co.uk). The reflective steel plays with the sunlight and will look lovely in a contemporary setting and is ready to hang straight from the box. If your partner is partial to a cuppa while relaxing in the garden, brighten her day with a Crazy Daisy jumbo cup and saucer decorated in multi-coloured pastel shades (£18.50, www. portmeirion.com). Garden trinkets have also become more popular in recent years, with a variety of glass balls, butterflies and copper leaves on long stems being used as a decorative addition to planters. There are many local shops that carry these as well as your garden centres. If you go down this route, a good idea is to go for one which also waters your pots, such as an eco-water feeder (£9.95 www.home2garden. co.uk) made of hand-blown 100% recycled glass. It is frost-proof and collects rainwater (or you can fill it), feeding water slowly through its stem into the soil underneath.

National Nest Box Week

14-21st February W

e hope to welcome you to RSPB The Lodge this year!

The reserve can be very busy over Christmas and New Year, as families come out to enjoy some fresh air, birds and wildlife after spending more time than usual indoors. This year was no exception, with many of the holiday days bustling with large numbers of visitors. As we reached 2017 it was a period of huge contrasts weather-wise, with a totally washed out New Year’s Day and hardly a visitor in sight, then a frosty, bright and sunny Bank Holiday to follow, with very large crowds all day. We had to open an extra area of car-parking to cope with the demand for space! The good thing at The Lodge is that you soon get out onto the reserve, where you can find plenty of peace and space, even at the busiest of times. We are also approaching the time when we think ahead to our garden birds finding new homes. Nature lovers from all around the country will be building, buying and putting up nest boxes for birds as part of the British Trust for Ornithology’s National Nest Box Week (14-21st February). National Nest Box Week has taken place for over 15 years, and is about providing suitable nest sites for birds in our gardens and green spaces.

For more advice and a step-to-step guide on making your own nest box visit http://www.rspb. org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/birds/nestboxes/ At the end of January thousands of people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, spending an hour counting the birds they saw in their garden. The charity will reveal the latest highs and lows for birds and other wildlife in March when the results from the survey are released. The RSPB Lodge reserve is open every day of the week, from dawn to dusk, for everyone to enjoy and there are plenty of organised events: just ring to book. Entry is included in the car-parking fee – £5 a car for non-members, free if you are members or just visiting the shop. The shop (01767 690333) is open every day (9am5pm and 10am-5pm weekends and Bank Holidays) and has everything for people who love nature.

Our website www.rspb.org.uk/thelodge is the place to look for all of the events you can enjoy here at RSPB The Lodge in 2017. Like us on Facebook.com/RSPB/hertsandbeds 79

BEDFORD fourth place and ultimately, it was that 54-46 win over the Cornish Pirates at Goldington Road that inched us ahead of Jersey. The result was three games on the bounce against Bristol. The final league game of the season went Bristol’s way but Bedford had exceeded expectations by finishing fourth in the league and setting up a semi-final against Andy Robinson’s men.

W

hat a 2016 it was! It kicked off with a 31-19 home win against London Scottish in the Championship, included a huge 64-20 victory over London Welsh, saw 100 points being scored in an enthralling game with Cornish Pirates- with plenty of thrills along the way. Bedford Blues Press Officer Simon Hutchinson takes a look back at his three favourite moments of 2016.

1. REACHING THE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFFS No-one needs reminding of the infamous Rugby Paper article in which former Rotherham supremo Lee Blackett earmarked the Blues for the drop. Following two seasons in which Bedford finished tenth and ninth, you could perhaps see Lee’s thinking, but relegation? No! Bedford kicked off the season with a bonus point win over Bristol in Bristol and didn’t look back. There were defeats along the way, but a solid Christmas and New Year saw Bedford pushing for 82

Bristol set about snubbing out the Blues during the semi-final. Despite the Blues best efforts, they just couldn’t break down Bris who won and then gained promotion to the Premiership. Regardless of the result, Mike Rayer’s men showed what can be done with a part-time team and a professional attitude.

2. BOXING DAY AGAINST JERSEY

Boxing Day 2010; a rip-roaring game as tries from Sacha Harding, Alex Rae and two for Handre Schmidt along with James Pritchard’s trusted boot helped the Blues to a 39-22 win over Bris. Six years on, Bedford Blues recorded their highest ever Championship attendance of 4621 as they welcomed Jersey Reds to Goldington Road. Dean Adamson opened the scoring with Myles Dorrian converting, before Ross Adair replied and Sam Katz converted to level things for the Reds. A fine kick up the field saw Adamson scoring again. But a yellow card for Josh Buggea saw Jersey turn the screw and they added their second try through Sami Fisilau with Katz hitting a good conversion. Dorrian put Bedford ahead with a penalty but the Reds went in ahead when Kuki Maafu scored and Katz converted.

B

BLUES Tom Farrell put Bedford back in front with a try by the posts, but Dorrian’s conversion was rundown. Katz hit a penalty to inch his side ahead before Dorrian sent a peach of a grubber through for Mike Le Bourgeois to score making it 27-24. But back came Jersey who levelled with another Katz penalty before their driving maul went over with James Freeman score the converted try and with ten on the clock, Katz chipped over another penalty to make it 27-37.

Bedford couldn’t break through the stubborn Jersey defence until the 78th minute, when waves of attack finally saw Matt Gallagher in space and the fullback dotted down to make it a five point game. Hearts were in mouths when Katz stepped up for a relatively simple looking penalty but he pulled it wide and Bedford had one more chance! Bedford – with the crowd well and truly behind them – were in the ascendancy deep into stoppage time when a penalty went their way at the scrum. Amazing afternoon!

3. A WONDERFUL TEAM TRY

My favourite came on New Year’s Eve at the Madejski Stadium as Bedford took on league leader London Irish. Trailing 29-14, the game looked beyond the Blues, but they scored a wonderful try that went through a monumental amount of phases. It starts with Tom Whiteley taking a tap penalty and the Blues running from within their own half. Four passes and George Perkins is off down the right wing before being stopped in the Exiles half. The forwards pile in in determined fashion and the ball is soon recycled back over to the left wing where Jason Hill makes yards before going to ground for another ruck.

A long looping pass sees Byron Hodge capture the ball and take a hit, but he sets the ball up and Whiteley orchestrates the next phase of the attack with Mike Le Bourgeois. Despite pressure from Blair Cowan, Bedford continue to attack through Tom Farrell, Matt Gallagher and Hill. Whiteley, Myles Dorrian, Le Bourgeois combine with Justin Blanchet crunching through. Whiteley, Ed Taylor, Dorrian, Blanchet, Le Bourgeois, then Perkins who spots a gap. Mike Howard, Hodge and Ed Taylor have his back before Whiteley gets things moving again. Jacob Fields, Le Bourgeois, Farrell or Gallagher (I just can’t tell) and Dorrian all punch through the defence before the canny Camilo picks up the ball and dots down from a yard out and gets a deserved pat on the back for his effort! So, here’s to a fantastic 2017 – COME ON YOU BLUES!!! The Greene King IPA Championship game against Ealing Trailfinders is at Goldington Road in February – buy your discounted tickets online now at www.bedfordrugby.co.uk 83

ulnerable and older people can get a free security check and home improvements from the Bobby Van team, supported by the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust and Bedfordshire Police. A visit from the Bobby Van will improve your home’s security and provide advice to prevent bogus callers from achieving their aim. The Bobbymen, all trained carpenters who visit the victims of crimes and elderly or vulnerable people to improve their security and prevent them becoming victims in the first place. The chances of an elderly person becoming a repeat victim of crime in the first six months after an incident drop from 14 per cent to just one per cent if they have had a visit from the service. The Bobby Scheme is carried out completely FREE OF CHARGE by our team of Bobby Men. They assess each home individually and fit the most appropriate security devices to help elderly, disabled or vulnerable people ensure their property is secure. They also visit elderly victims of crime to improve their security, offer reassurance and prevent them becoming victims again.

Since 1999 the Bobby Men have attended over 20,000 homes across the county and make a major impact in preventing crime.

HOW DOES IT WORK

“The Bobby team” carry out a survey of your house and identify any vulnerable areas and where appropriate, improve the security with locks, door chains and viewers etc. We are also in partnership with Bedfordshire & Luton Fire and Rescue Service and will fit smoke detectors. “The service is generally free, but as the Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust is a charity, donations of whatever amounts are always welcome. It costs £120,000 a year to operate the scheme which was launched with the help of a grant from the National Lottery. Every year we need to raise funds through further corporate and individual donations from members of the public to maintain this scheme as a long term benefit for the people of Bedfordshire.” The Bobby Van service is for those people over the age of 65 or vulnerable or disabled. Eagles The

victory. Jon Taylor’s half time words rang strong in the Eagles ears and two minutes into the second half they took lead when Femi Orenuga was brought down and he converted the penalty. Later in the half, Lee Roache flicked a Tshikuna shot from the edge of the area, goal wards to double the lead and complete a very professional performance but hard earned win.

I

t has been an unbeaten festive period for the Eagles. Since the last Beds local entry, the Eagles have been on an good run of form, hitting two wins and two draws from their festive fixtures. The period was less busy than in previous years, with the club continuing to play on average, only once a week. The good run of form started with a 1:1 draw against Fleet Town on 17th December at the Eyrie. Boxing Day saw a number of Eagles make the short distance across Bedfordshire to Arlesey Town, and despite some madness from left back Hammed Lawal in the 41st minute when he was sent off for kicking out at an opposition player, went on to claim a valuable 86

The New Year started in quite bizarre fashion at the Eyrie, as on the 2nd January we welcomed Cambridgeshire side Histon to the Eyrie. The Eagles found themselves two goals up inside the opening 25 minutes and wasted several chances to increase this lead before half time. It would prove costly, as the visitors sitting second bottom in the league, came out with new life and within 15 minutes were level at 2:2. The extra quality in the Eagles side showed, and in the last half an hour they stepped up a gear running out 5:2 winners. The unbeaten run then continued into January at Ashford Town Middlesex with the Eagles picking up a valuable 1:1 draw, despite having several chances to win the tie, and Ashford missing a late penalty. Saturday 14th January saw the first ever free entry, or entry via donation game at the Eyrie. At the time of Beds Local print, we don’t have exact information on how successful this was. However, we will report on it in the next issue. The New Year period was overshadowed by the unsettling news that manager Jon Taylor was considering his position at the club, having received an offer to go and manage EvoStik

Premier League side St Neots Town. However, after debliabtion we were delighted to announce that Taylor had committed his future to the club. Speaking to the club’s official facebook page, he stated ““It has been a bit of a difficult week, but I know I have made the right decision. I am a Bedford person and it would have been the wrong decision for me to leave. We are starting to get things together and, for the right reasons, I have remained loyal to Bedford Town Football Club.” The Club have created an official Instagram account. Following the success of the Eagles official twitter and Facebook pages, the club has taken the decision to launch an official instagram account. Bedford Town currently has 2,697 Facebook followers and 4.405 followers on Twitter making us one of the most followed club’s in the Southern League across social media. Fans can now share their experiences at games via Facebook and Twitter, as well as promoting events and services the club has to offer to their friends. The Instagram account was launched on Saturday 29th October.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering Opportunities Volunteering is rewarding, a good way to improve job prospects and DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR BENEFITS.

OPPORTUNITIES IN CARING In February, CVS will be featuring opportunities with organisations that are caring for others. Look out for more vacancies on our twitter feed @ volunteerbeds and join the conversation #volunteertocare. 251 Volunteer Mentor (Transforming Rehabilitation) Volunteers are needed to support service users, either in custody or the community, to establish or maintain positive family relationships and reduce the impact of offending, on children. Mentors guide, encourage, help communicate, provide assistance and work through goals. 53 Memory Navigator You will provide helpline telephone support and call people with dementia, people with memory concerns, and also carers of people with these conditions. You will signpost callers to various services, offer information, support and listen; take information to register calls; and make review calls to those who are already registered. Some data entry required.

85 Befriender You will engage with a small number of residents with disabilities on a one-to-one basis, building relationships through sharing hobbies and interests, chatting, reading, writing letters, watching TV, playing games etc. This requires two-hours minimum per week – weekdays, evening or weekends. 53 Dementia Befriender Dementia befrienders enable carers to have two hours freedom a week. You will be matched with a carer and the person they care for, and then agree with the coordinator on a plan. Visits may involve active listening and socialising with the person with dementia, enabling their relative to have weekly respite. There is no aspect of personal care involved. 208 Volunteer Care Home Befriender Volunteer Care Home Befrienders visit one or more residents of a Care Home on a one to one basis, providing friendship. Medium-long term commitment, and regular visiting will be required. There may be walks out, and opportunities to talk to other residents in communal areas.

232 Home Visitor A social opportunity with a visually impaired person in their home at an agreed time and day (45 mins to 1½ hrs). You will offer companionship, friendship and support, through listening and activities such as reading or helping with crosswords.

62 Bereavement Support Volunteer Cruse Bereavement Care provides bereavement support to adults. Volunteers are needed to sit alongside bereaved people, listen to their stories and help them through difficult times. Clients are supported at home, over the telephone and at drop-in centres.

18 Play Worker You will support young people with Cerebral Palsy at a teenage (14-17) youth club. The club offers a chance to spend quality time together learning new things and having fun. The club runs every fourth Saturday of the month, 9am – 2pm.

Please contact CVS if you are interested in any of the above vacancies.
